This is what makes him such a great actor. Christian Bale is the only person who actually showed up and took his work serious. Everybody else was just doing a comedy routine.

Bale did phenomenally well here, he seamlessly transitions his facial expressions from someone enjoying a laugh into the butt of their joke after realizing nothing is funny and that everyone is actually laughing at him. Its a shame all the scenes couldn't have been this poignant.

He was too good for this film. Taika Waititi is a one trick pony, any attempt at a serious plot is beyond him. Joe Joe Rabbit only worked because he could frame everything as a joke from the child's perspective.

Dark World had less humour but still was bland the first thor movie even with a balanced amount humour was decent at best soooo i think it´s not so much a matter of not having any humour but simply a well told and presented story ... the problem is Love and Thunder went TOO over the top with the humor AND had a bland story
@@MrTBSC You misunderstand. I liked the humor in Ragnarok. But this movie needed to be something different. All the MCU movies have taken after GotG and Ragnarok in making them constant goof-fests. Those movies were great for it, but it's becoming a rote trope. Remember the first Iron Man. He's literally executing terrorists. The humor present is limited and sparse in that film and it works so well. Why can't we have more of that? Especially when you get the actual American Psycho to play the lead villain called The God Killer. Its part of the reason the MCU has become so boring in recent years. I have to admit, the emotional range Christian Bale shows in just this scene is truly magnificent. From his adoration and admiration at first beholding Rapu (You can tell he had longed for that moment his entire life), to briefly laughing along with Rapu and the dryads until he realizes the "joke" is on him, to his desperately begging for help and relief, to growing disillusionment over Rapu's callousness, to righteous anger as he renounces Rapu, which he then lets finally evolve into a calm, steely, merciless bloodlust. An amazing emotional journey in less than four minutes, and all portrayed flawlessly. Bravo!
Yep. Thats the rushed nature of the MCU. Things that should be drawn out are only 5 minutes and things that should only be 5 minutes are drawn out

The way he transitions between two polar opposite characters: an anguished worshipper and a newborn god-killer, is astonishing. He's the greatest actor of his generation.

That's why I can't stand this movie. Gorr is the most broken (emotionally) and this movie made him a joke. Seriously, look at his comics wiki page, it's a backstory the puts Batman's to shame. Same with a lot of other characters.

Christian Bale showed more acting skill and versatility in this four-minute scene than many other actors in an entire film. The way he says the words, especially in the first part, is almost theatrical.

When the movie started and I saw this scene, I thought to myself: "Wow this really got bad reviews? That was one of the best scenes and acting in the whole MCU!" Boy I really didn't know what lied ahead...

this movie feels like it was much longer, maybe more serious, then it was cut down so the pacing feels off and too many jokes were kept in. this movie could have been a fantastic tragedy.
He was the wrong villain for Love and Thunder because he doesn't fit with the comic tone. Ragnarok worked a lot better because of the relationship between Thor and Hulk/Banner. To me, this should have been a darker story and being so silly, it kind of clashes with Gorr and his mission.

honestly I think this scene was perfect how quickly he turned from an innocent worshipping man to a god killer who sees the truth, imagine being in the presence of a god who isn't what you thought he was losing everything you loved because of it and then him laughing in your face id say most people would turn to revenge and a have a killer instinct very quickly
Not if you take life and anybody in it for granted.. including yourself!. Some things change some never. Life as a game of chess or snake and ladders are not permanent constructs but interesting set of opportunities - the idea that nothing is meant to last anyway, so us rat people left to run the rat race while logic dictates, god's dispose, chaos reigns, and the sun keeps the known galaxie (everything in it) eternally bound together! .. Death is really that gift of Jail release we never realise the freedom it delivers.

It's nice to See Rapu's fear in his eyes moments before he dies. Realizing just what he created from his own arrogance. Once a mortal with nothing left to lose and a target of obsession he wants dead for how they took everything from him, and then had the Gaul to try and say their suffering was all they were good for. Immediately when he heard Gorr say "All gods must die" He definitely knew he royally fucked up in every conservable way.
Absolutely! It's always amazing to watch a scene where privileged people (or beings) with power look down on those they deem inferior with ridicule, contempt, and disgust only to tremble with fear and shock when someone they viewed as insignificant gains enough power to get on equal, or greater footing with them.

Like, yeah, ok, I'm supposed to hate this guy I get it, but I just can't care about him because of how lame the whole scene is (except for Gorr). What I mean is that Rapu could've been a lot less corny to make Gorr's backstory hit a little better is all.

Can we also take a moment to appreciate the acting of New Zealand actor Jonny Brugh (star of What We Do In The Shadows) in this scene? For an actor who usually plays comedic roles he does a really good job of playing the god Rapu as an absolute arsehole. He really sold the character, to the point where everyone was cheering Gorr for killing him. No small achievement in only a few minutes of screen time.

This scene shows how Taika can actually pull off drama and serious stuff once he's kept in check. Love and Thunder had potential to be great were he not so adamant to put silly jokes into every single scene and ruin every single serious moment.

I felt Christian Bale was the only professional actor in this movie.
The part where they are all laughing at him and he looks around thinking everyone is just having a good time. Innocently trying to be a part of the fun, incredible acting.

That was just the best performance of all the movie. He was the best, at the beginning i didn´t recognize him, later at the end while he was already touched my heart with his sorrow, i felt it. When i recognize him well, it all made sense.
This starting off so strong and could’ve been so good if they just took any bit of it seriously. Gorr is an incredibly dark and brutal villain and should’ve been in a movie that matched his character.
Gorr will always remain one of my top MCU villains. What a portrayal by Christian Bale!

Nando V Movies has a great video on this idea. The movie doesn't actually have a thesis for what makes a "Good" vs "Poor" god, and therefore muddies the waters with Gorr's mission. Rappu is the one shitty god he kills, but the other gods he kills are not characterized, whereas the ones he doesn't kill in Omnipotent City do seem shitty. But there doesn't seem to be any kind of standard to hold a god to vs a mortal.
He went from Player 1 Dhalsim to Player 2 Dhalsim really fast...

Wow, they really went hard on this intro just to completely drop the ball on the rest.
Can you imagine if Gorr took down deity after deity and Thor had to chase him across the universe, each time finding more dead bodies? Kind of chilling really.
Funny, thats 100% how it happened in the comics. One entir issue was basically dedicated to Thor traveling around from world to world, to the cathedrals, and finding only butchered corpses.
It kinda happens here as well, just a much shorter journey.

The storyline of Gorr in the comics is epic af, sadly Taika Waititi turned it into a dumb comedy skit, similar with what he did with the Ragnarok & Planet Hulk story-arcs.
CB is the only reason for most of the people to sit and watch this comedy movie for 2 hours.

It actually makes sense for him to not even bother. All Black is underpowered and cut off from Knull and, much like the symbiotes in the Sony films, is slowly killing Gorr. Going after Eternity makes a lot of sense.
I thought the whole zeus and his arrogant court thing was going to result in a massacre where Gorr arrives after they ignore Thor's warning and starts taking heads left and right. Wasted potential and an entire section of the movie wasted as what did that entire scene with Zeus and that area achieve that couldnt have been done elsewhere in a 5 minute scene? "oh thats where he's probably headed"

With a name like "The God Butcher", you would think we might see him Kill more than one god.
It was alluded to by Zeus and Thor that Gorr had killed many gods. But they couldn't show that, they were too busy doing really shitty version of SNL skits, as tautological as that sounds.
The way he delivers the line "the eternal reward" is so good

I like how Bale's Mole moves from one side to the other. I noticed it immediately when I first saw this movie. Not sure why they needed to mirror some scenes.

One could argue that the god guy was just that arrogant that he couldn't even conceive of the mortal using the sword on him, but we know the true reason is that Taika Waititi has undisguised contempt for the audience and goes out of his way to insult their intelligence. I mean, why was the sword even there at all? What are the odds that the one person in the whole universe who might get upset enough to kill a god blunders across the one, specific god that broke his heart and ruined his life mere moments after some guy brings the only thing that can kill a god to that exact location? On a related note, in the first Thor movie, Odin explicitly says on-screen about Asgardians that "we are not gods: we are born, we live, we die. Just as humans do, give or take 5000 years."

Writing a non-comedic scene in which too many unrelated things happen that weren't set up earlier because "otherwise there would be no story" is the mark of either an amateur or someone who doesn't give a shit and just wants to get it done so they can go home. The way this scene unfolds is as if a ten year old was playing in his backyard, making up the story on the spot. "Then the god says 'hahaha, I don't care that you're sad about everyone being dead because I'm a bad guy. You can't hurt me anyway.' But the god didn't know I have the only thing that can kill a god, it's the, uh..."-quickly looks around and sees a stick-"it's this sword. The sword of, uh, dea- the Death-sword! So I easily kill the guy and then I say 'all gods will die' and I look cool and awesome. Mum, can I have an ice lolly?" What they should have done instead of this scene is something like: have the guy with the sword attack a different god and injure them before being defeated, to demonstrate the sword is lethal to gods; have the sword then escape being destroyed by dissolving away into the shadows so we know the sword is alive or sentient or whatever; then separate from all that, have Gorr find Rapu's garden and find out Rapu is a complete fuckhead; Rapu breaks the last piece left of Gorr's heart, Gorr falls into anguished rage and denounces Rapu, who has such contempt for mortals that he simply laughs and throws Gorr into a ravine or something; Gorr weeps openly with impotent rage as nearby shadows coalesce into the shape of the Necrosword; the sword soothes Gorr's broken heart, tells him what Rapu did is unforgivable and that it will give Gorr the power to punish Rapu; Gorr accepts and takes up the sword; he returns to Rapu's garden, Rapu gets annoyed that he came back and tries to kill him as if he were a simple pest, but doesn't realise Gorr has the Necrosword now and is executed; as Rapu dies, the sword tells Gorr that all gods are like Rapu, arrogant and contemptuous, so Gorr announces "then all gods must die" and the scene ends.
Its pretty clear that some ancient powerful being had been wandering around with the sword for a long time; but, based on the reactions of the other gods, not nearly as dangerous as Gorr; it wasn't until Gorr acquired the sword that the gods were in a panic, fleeing, running; most likely, something about Gorr makes him more dangerous than his predecessor once he has the sword; after all, could you imagine this gold-bleeding wanker being able to casually murder someone that can stand up to two Thors in a fight? No. They thought the threat was done, that Gorr was helpless, and they had no reason to worry. @@Elriuhilu
Still makes me wonder how the god of flowers and fruit salads managed to defeat the previous wielder of the necrosword.
A God is still a God. How can a child kill a man if he's but a child type of thing just xause he's a God of flowers doesn't mean he doesn't have godlike power
Interestingly, this movie came out after the King in Black event in the comics. Since the movies are just another universe and all symbiotes are connected, it is likely that All Black is cut off from Knull and not at its full power.
why do people think he was the god of flowers? He was clearly that worlds Sun God, huge, bronzed skin, head with a crown of radiant lines of gold with light always shining from him. Gorr even calls him the "bringer of light". Flowers? No i don't think so.

theres a comic about gorr, in it two god like creatures fight both wielding powerful swords. In the scene you see slashes on the dead guy meaning he has a blade
When I first saw this scene, I was like "yup, i'm sold, all the Gods gotta go". Never have I rooted for the villain of a film more.

I still find Rapu's perspective quite contradictory. He claims that there are always more followers, but how's one to gain followers if no one's alive to spread your name? Especially the way he lives in selfish apathy. He would've faded into cosmic obscurity.
He was a bit too cartoonishly evil for this scene to be effective imo. Like Bale's acting is great, but the whole plot only starts because of this scene and I can't take it seriously otherwise.
Because Gods in Marvel are more like aliens than actual gods at least the lesser ones, yeah some of them gain power by worship, but some are powerful even without it, and this God stated that simply can choose another species of intelligent creatures, revealing himself on one form or another.
I don’t know the way I view it is always that he must be a timeless god and this isn’t his first civilization to fall in his name so he must either planet hop or literally waits for life to start again and in which case his perspective kind of makes sense more I’d be probably hate humans if I was god through out all of time and in a blink of any eye in their time a bunch of monkeys evolved and started splitting atoms and throwing them at eachother
This just calls back to *spoilers* Zeus's lament "when did we become the joke" and Rapu demonstrated it perfectly, you ignored ur followers and neglected their prayers with such arrogant apathy. Gawd this just feels like marvels version of suicide squad, what could've been an amazing and dark hero movie ruined by executive meddling and probably a piss ton of cut/scrapped scenes

The dude can do visuals and some good comedy, but he completely sacrificed any notion of emotional impact or story in both Ragnarok + Love and Thunder. And I really don't get how this is the guy who made JoJo Rabbit. There, he knew how to make the horrors of the real life situations he was drawing from hit hard whilst mocking it with dark comedy.

If the source material is mediocre, the complementing material is mediocre and the production company has always been producing mediocrity, then no matter how good the director is: he will still produce mediocrity. He was one of the few reasons why I decided to watch some Marvel movies, but this specific movie showed that a production company that has been making garbage since Iron Man in 2008 will continue to make garbage, no matter what talented directors they get.

What I love about movies is that damn near every actor has no idea how to hold a weapon, throw a punch, or bother at all to take 2 minutes to learn where to place their hands so that something looks authentic. Makes actors like Keanu all the more special.

With Marvel going full gear into the Multiverse I thought it would be a perfect time to bring in Knull and by extension the Symbiotes.

I'll just add one more to the whole "wow, Christian Bale did such an awesome job in this film!" He doesn't get nearly enough credit for this.
They could have done so much more with this movie, Christian Bale as Gorr was one of the best MCU Villain performances

Christian Bale should have got an oscar for playing Gorr , he made this whole movie watchable, no disrespect to hemsworth, portman & everyone else but there was too much attempt of slapstick comedy .
Can we also take a moment to appreciate actor Jonny Brugh here as Rapu. For an actor who usually plays comedic sidekick roles, he did a really good job of playing Rapu as an absolute arsehole, to the point where everyone in the theatre was cheering Gorr for killing him. Which is no small feat in only a few minutes of screen time, really.
I see, I agree. It's not the actor's fault they did their best, especially Bale he was awesome as Gorr. but the writing was bad, that made the movie 👎

I even can’t imagine being in Gorr’s shoes. Worshipping a God your entire life only for that same God to laugh at you once you have reached the end of it.
This was like watching two totally different movies edited together. Bale brings such serious, high- quality acting to a flippant, jokey Superhero movie..
Real actors are still around, they can't get work because Hollywood is such a joke.
I love how in this ideal paradise that is tended by an actual god, the water is still murky and looks undrinkable
I imagine Rapu wouldn't dare let a drop of water fall onto his tongue. No, that would be to revolting to have happen. Rapu probably only drinks some kind of wine.
I feel like it fits Rapu, like the water is a symbol of life, and it being dirty is a metaphor for Rapu not caring about the lives of others. Even if it wasn’t intentional, it works well as a metaphor for Rapu’s selfishness and how many lives it costed, and simultaneously what Gorr would become. I just wish the rest of the movie was as good as Gorr’s origin story.
Old Taika really tried to make this into a farce but Christian Bale showed up. Every scene with Gorr was awesome.

"There's nothing for you after death, except death!" Since we saw Eternity, I had always thought that maybe Rapu was referencing the actual entity Death when he said that.
Everytime I watched a Christian Bale scene in this movie I wanted to tell him something like "don't worry man, you're taking your job as an actor too seriously. This is Marvel, it's like fantasy land". Hands down the most talented actor from this movie.
This movie really makes you feel like, “man, maybe gorr isn’t the villain here” 😅
We can all agree that Christian Bale was the only great thing in the whole movie. Everytime his character showed up on screen i was captivated.
Heard Christen Bale had to go get medical help after hurting his back after carrying this movie....he's alright now thank god but gave us all a worry there for a second. Also love the fact he stops laughing with everyone once he realized they aren't laughing with him in success but laughing at him in mocking him to think he has a reward for his devotion.
Don't worry not the first time Bale healed from a back injury and crawled out of a giant hole.
What a great oppening scene this was, the movie then shifts to Korg narrating his version of events, turning the whole thing into a farce. We could have had a seriously awesome movie if it had kept the same tone as that first part.

My opinion was they should have shown the sword being flung from asgard when it was blown up and it was drawn to him Mjolnir style sensing his hate towards gods. Could have opened up more doors in the future of powerful artifacts being in the universe
I'm pretty sure something very similar to that is what happened in the comics.

If you're curious on watching the movie, this is it folks...Best scene in the whole movie, and it's 2 minutes in.
I think one way to make the movie better is that we should have more of Gorr's POV, kind of like what they did with Thanos. More scenes, more Gods being slaughtered. If they have balls they can use known Gods and sacrificed them to Gorr.
I agree, but it shouldn't have been a movie, imo, it should've been a miniseries. The tonal stuff is the worst part of the movie, but it also introduces and then discards way too many ideas- they're bringing Jane back, making her the Mighty Thor, AND she has cancer. You still need to continue Thor's character arc from Ragnarok through Endgame. You have a person hellbent on killing all of the Gods, which incidentally is an aspect of your universe you never explored outside of the Asgardians. You have Thor with the GotG at least for part of it. It's just way too much to do justice in a movie, even if it was better made. A miniseries would make it easier to more fully develop the story, including having more Gorr scenes
Thor 4 should've probably been 2 movies or they could've made Gorr the big bad. Especially now that they either fired or are gonna fire Jonathon Majors, they need a top villain and they busted their load on a villain with a director who had no clue how to use him. In the comics he's more brutal and has more bloodlust. He's actually super scary. Here he feels kind of generic.
@@curranfrank2854 Apparently Waititi made it like 4+ hour movie and that's why it's so chopped up and clunky. People blame the studio but it's still his fault because no one is going to pay to watch a 4 hour movie and if he doesn't know that then he needs a new line of work.
@@Aaron-kj8dv That makes sense honestly, explains why there's so much in it. Yeah I liked Ragnarök but Taika definitely deserves a fair bit of blame for this one, he clearly put too much in the movie and despite that he also seemed determined to make the films tone unserious
