Should You Upgrade from 18inch to 19inch Wheels on Your F30 BMW?
My 2018 BMW 340i xDrive came with a set of 18 inch OEM 400M wheels with Pirelli Cinturato P7 run flat tires. The tires were not very good for performance, but the wheels were fine. I decided to switch to 19 inch Verde Axis V99 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 tires. This new wheel setup looks much better, but it has some downsides, which I discuss in this video.

Thanks for the content, I'm just getting a 340i RWD, it comes with 19's and I'm going to swap them out for 18's and put what's left towards an LSD. I also went back to 17's on my wagon after running 18's for a few days.
My 440i gran coupe is running staggered 19" msports. They look fantastic IMHO
I’m picking up my custom powder coated Apex EC-7s on Tuesday! I too grew tired of my stock look. I’m xdrive so I went with a 225/255 stagger. They’ll be on Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 summer tires so it’ll be a huge improvement over my current 225 square stock runflat all seasons. Your car looks way better with the Verdes 👍
Nice. What size did you go with?
@@NWAuto 18x8.5 +45 and 18x9.5 +58 with 3mm spacers front and rear. Should give me a fitment that’s pretty flush without poking on my F22.
Good video! Helpful. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
I drive 20" on my 435i with 235/30 in front and 285/25 at the rear. Stock was 19" 225/40 and 255/35. Updated suspension at the same time so in the end, it drives smoother even before, even with the low profile tire. Ofc it would be even better with smaller rims but the looks is just awesome
I haven't seen many of those around. Is acceleration affected?
i too would like to know if your acceleration got better
@@Insanias nice reminder, did not see the first answer haha I cant say for sure but i would say the difference from 100-200kmh is not measureable and definitly not feelable. 0-100kmh will be better, but the tire has to be good as well. My car is RWD so traction is the limiting factor
I run staggered 19's with Continentals Sport Extreme 245/35/19 and 275/40/19 with BC Racing coilovers. 2014 f10 535i
I went with a squared setup of OEM front BMW 437m’s (19x9). They weigh 21.9 pounds per wheel so not only did they look better, but they were almost 5 lbs lighter than my stock wheels. There is a bit of poke in the back so I would never even consider using 19x10 in the rear cuz I don’t like that look.
Those looks really nice on the F30. What did you pay for them?
Used for $2,000
@@Streamlined955 Not bad. With tires?
Your overall wheel diameter went from 660mm with the 225/45-18 to 654mm with the 245/35-19 so it’s all in your head buddy.
Your stock wheel setup gives you a wheel diameter of 26" tall. With a new wheel setup, the idea is try and match that stock wheel height so your programed speedometer gives accurate speed readings. Larger diameter wheel covers more distance per single rotation. Smaller wheel less distance. Multiply that change by thousands just going down the road. So your new 19" wheel setup, using your new tire size, gives you a wheel diameter that is around 7/10 ths of a inch less than stock. Which is not too bad (so no way your car is sitting higher from a shorter wheel). Maybe your tires are inflated more giving the car higher ground clearance. But if you feel you lost performance you could have just as easily went with a 40 size sidewall size which would put wheel height at 7/10 ths of a inch over stock height whereas the 35 sidewall puts you at 7/10 ths under. But i kinda doubt you lost any performance at all anyway. Standing there looking at your car i doubt anyone could discern the difference in appearance between a 40 and 35 sidewall ratio as it only amounts to 6 millimeters more in thickness. But also, if youd have gone with a 255 x 35 tire that would have put you exactly dead on at the factory 26" wheel height. Just going by math. Not accounting for tire brand variations and such.
My guess is the extra weight affected performance. It felt more sluggish off the line with the new setup. But it did sit slightly higher after. I know this for sure because it stopped scraping my driveway as soon as I switched to the new setup. I might stick with 18s on the next car though. I'm starting to like that higher profile setup more
Great video bruh! Just exactly what i need to know especially im not an expert and it will be my 1st time. My stock is 17 and Im planning pretty soon to upgrade 18 rims and its about time to change tire due to wear. I just have a question for the hub rings. Were the rims you both not exactly fitted on the hub of the car? hence, it was shaky as it does not seat well? Therefore, hub rings to compensate? If that is the case, i should be choosing rims that's exactly sits on the hub? I'm after of the look but i should be careful in driving aggressively when that happens. More power bruh
I think there was a gap between the wheel and the hub and that caused vibrations for me. The hub rings fixed that. But you probably won't need them unless feel vibrations after the install
Gotchu! Thank you brother@@NWAuto
Love the new look on the wheels, it looks a lot more aggressive
Yeah definitely changes the look of the car
Where did you get your rims from
Is the Michelin AS4, quiet? I have the AS2 and it has lots of road noise. Also is the gas mpg loss minimal or significant?
I don't think the road noise is bad with them. And the mpg loss is minimal, but I still noticed it
Yo you were at crown point the vista house! I live in Portland!
Yeah I like the twisty roads in that area
Hey what lug nuts did you use? It's a pain in the ass to find lug nuts in M14x1.25 that aren't ugly or cost a arm? I just bought Rohana RFX11 19x8.5 front and 19x9 in the rear, I got Michelin sport 4s 255 35 R19 , just need some decent lug nuts
I'm not exactly sure. The tire shop I installed at provided them for me
What is the best tyre size that I can use for my 2014 f10 . Am thinking of 19* 8.5inch wheel &255/45 and 285/40 . If I use this size will it scrub the fenders?
I run staggered 19's with Continentals Sport Extreme 245/35/19 and 275/40/19 with BC Racing coilovers.
What do you think about this fitment for bmw 330e m sport 2018 (f30) - - front 225/40/19 DOT 2019 - rear: 255/35/19 DOT 2020 - front: 8,5J ET23 - rear: 9,5J ET38 - Michelin Pilot Sport 4s i will appreciate your feedback, thank you.
I ran basically this exact setup on my RWD F30 335i when I had it. It was solid. Are you RWD?
Hi, I am doing a simple MOD on my F34 3 Series Gran Turismo 18" wheels with 433 Mhz TPMS. I bought 19" staggered wheels with new pre-installed 433 Mhz TPMS. How do I make my car recognize the TPMS for both the wheels when I install the new ones?
I haven't done that. But it looks like there are some youtube videos on the process of programming new TPMS. I'd just watch one of those
I currently have 17s stock , would 18s fit perfectly without having to get new tires ? Car is a bmw 2009 328i , it has m sport suspension
That car should. There are plenty of 2009 3 series with 18s and 19s
@@NWAuto oh okay, on the tire it says 17 so I thought I would have to get new tires that say 18 in order to put 18 inch rims
@@6atxrn sorry I read that wrong. You will need new tires. They should say 18 on them to fit 18s. Maybe keep your current set as backup if you upgrade
@@NWAuto oh okay, thanks is there a way to figure out a good fitment? Maybe a website or something
@@6atxrn check out forums or post in a Facebook group for your car. People there are usually pretty helpful. Also when you order wheels and tires, you can enter your car info and ask the supplier if it will fit right
How much did the 19 inch affect acceleration?
18x18 et 34 ??????
hello, can you please drop the link for the mudflaps?and do they have it for other cars as well?
Look up TommyLGarage on KZhead. I emailed him and he made them for me
What radar detector do you have. Im tryna buy one you recommend
I use Uniden R7. Linked in description. It does a good job when the police have their radar on. And it shows you witch direction the signal is coming from
im on 20 inch 405M, potholes in this are deadly, they sound like they exploded your tires everytime i hit them, also at 20 inch the mpg gets affected badly, speed is still similar, traction is similar too as i got x drive so didn't notice any loss of traction, turning circle is a lot worse, tyres are very expensive, car looks lowered due to bigger wheels only because less wheel well gap
Yeah I do see some running 20s once in a while. But I blew my tire out the other day and I'm having a lot of trouble getting a replacement. Apparently theres a rubber shortage and a lot of places are out of stock for my tire. The ones that are in stock want almost $500 for one tire. I imagine with 20s its even harder to find low profile tires for your car
@@NWAuto yeah bro i tried finding some today even part worn for me are around 300 a tire
Lmaooo I just bought a f30 335 with 20 inch 405M couple days ago and got scared asf when I heard my first “explosion” 🤣🤣 Don’t know if I should switch down to 19 because my city has a lot of potholes. But the 20s look so good…
@@user-cm4xn7eh7j i say keep the 20's i got tbe same alloys they sexy asf, make sure you get tyres with good rim protection on them, also don't mount kerbs too fast as its instant blowout my tyre guy said 😂😭
Will only lead to bent/cracked wheels
Great video! I have stock 18x8 and 18x8.5. I am thinking about 19s for the look but concerned about performance and rougher ride..and potholes 😂 If I go 18x8.5 and 18x9.5, is this still better than going 19s and not impact gas and performance?
Yeah that 18 inch setup would be better for performance
Yea gotta watch out for those potholes! I learned the hard way! Ran into one in the rain on the freeway and blew out my tire and bent my rim 😢 went back to 18s after that
Hey, dude. What are your specifications on the wheels? What do you think about: front 19x8.5 ET35 rear 19x9.5 ET40 225/40R19, 255/35R19 Is this will work without any issues on the xDrive?
Staggered on xDrive can mess things up in some cases. I recommend watching this video by Kies on xDrive staggered and using a tire size calculator. kzhead.info/sun/lJepg76djqqMq2w/bejne.html
Hey there. Could I put 18” rims on a 2013 bmw 316i which comes with a standard 17”
Yeah F30 can run 18s fine
What tire pressure do you use for front and rear?
I'm not exactly sure. The shop did all that for me when switching the tires
Could I use the same size all around instead staggered?
Yeah thats what I ended up doing
You should get your break calipers sprayed red
Yeah red would look good
Where can i purchase the exact mud flaps?
Look up "Tommy L Garage Mud Flaps" on youtube. You will have to email him
I like the 19 inch look better but going from 45 to 35 in tire sidewall is a deal breaker.
Yeah having that sidewall is nice
Smaller wheels = larger lowering capacity without having to drive on the side walls
19’s for show, 18’s for go.
Yeah basically a summary of this video
There's a reason track/race cars don't use stupidly low profile tires and huge rims. I've heard all sorts of "It HeLpS HAndLing THo" excuses and it really doesn't unless you're driving 10/10ths (which you'll never do on the roads). I'd rather have a plush ride i can push harder than worry about fixing £2000 rims everytime i see a bump in the road. Manufacturers have realized big rims = big moneys and the poor saps buying them have been had with their pants down lmao.
How is the mileage ?
averages around 23
@@NWAuto i drive a 435d xdrive and i get 23mpg on a full send. i sure do prefer petrol noises but i cant deny my fuel bill is a lot less because of it
Looks better but doesn’t drive better , 18 inch is better in every way
Lowering springs will finish those wheels off
Yeah I really need to lower it. Only reason I haven't done it yet is because this is the only car I own, and a lot of places I drive have really steep driveways. I might buy a cheap daily soon and then lower the BMW
@@NWAuto those steep driveways are killers Not telling you what to do but I would suggest you buy a daily like you said and save up for an air ride system just to make sure those steep driveways don't ruin your car
@@sacars777 yeah air ride would be awesome. I know some Porsches have a nose lift. I wish I had that on my car
@@NWAuto we all wish that 🤣 Maybe you should just put front lift and not a full air ride system would work and be much more pocket friendly
A pothole or large bump will REALLY finish the wheels off 🤣
Wow, 19” at 31.5 lb is heavy
Yeah I might have to go for forged next time
just flexing...
nice car can i have it please its very nice
just steal one
Black wheels 😝
I love black on white. I know its not for everyone
sell me the old ones ha
I sold them a while ago
