This suitcase TV from LG is something we haven’t seen before, and we needed to talk about it. Part portable monitor, part home theater in a box and part bluetooth speaker. Is it for Van life? Work trips? Glamping? No matter what, it’s got HDR on-the-go, while you’re camping. The LG Stanbyme Go is... something.

I was looking for someone else noticing and commenting it 😂
This is certainly a unique piece of tech, but I agree with your points. The brightness issue is a deal breaker for outdoor usage especially, and the cost just seems prohibitive for what it delivers.
unique 🤭
I also agreed with it. Coz brightness is what you need most during outdoors especially under the sun light.
I thought the concept was cool, but holy hell the execution... It's like they didn't even try. It's nothing but a gimmick.

Probably should be mandatory in California.

If that's kinda like any LG OS, you can add an option to turn off the display (but continue audio and such) in the quick-menu on the left.
Man, this takes me back. There were this old portable suitcase gaming monitors from Gaems that were hdmi powered from the xbox360/ps3, you only needed the console brick. They were super cool

A homebrew version of this concept would be a great project for Matt at DIY PERKS. He would definitely do the speakers right, and inside the rugged suitcase, it would probably be a brass and hardwood veneer beauty. He's also done outdoor TVs and power stations, so he has the skillset. Maybe this could be the mythical DIY Perks - LTT collab, with LTT contributing the electronics - perhaps based on parts from Frameworks Marketplace?
@@TheTastefulThickness ye u don’t need to. But I want tooo

@@ragecandy Yes he did. Also a DIY power station. Also many high quality speaker projects. A high quality DIY version is totally in his wheelhouse.
@@TheTastefulThickness True, don't even need the battery pack since most laptops include one inside. A low effort, low fidelity version is easy. But the cool project would be to emulate the LG luggable with super bright screen, high quality audio, extended unplugged playtime, and maybe some gaming capabilities.
David not only did an amazing job writing this but also doing all the fun bits. Would love to see more of him
I saw this, and immediately thought it would be perfect for a small display at conferences. A lug in, lug out, easy to deploy display for the showroom floor.

6:31 I actually just found how to turn off the screen the other day. You have to go to advanced display settings, go to the power savings mode, and there is an option to turn off the display there.
When i first got mine i was able to toggle the energy saving on or off battery. They must have updated and not you cant turn it off or change brightness at all on mine.
You can turn the screen off by going to general, enegry saving then screen off, you can also add it to the menu that pops up when you press the settings button

Beardless linus
11:05 that squirrel is the most exciting thing about this video
good video tbh. I think this is a great way to look at a product. I like the current style of 'looking at tech' you got going :)
The audio does seem like such a major oversight. I have a Dell laptop from 6th gen Intel that has a bottom firing sub built to the laptop and it sounds great.
I literally put together the same thing for my studio and client work where I show the customers without them having to hover over my laptop. I used a portable display for $100, a cheap camera tripod, and a tablet wall mount holder, the monitor is used for multiple purposes, the Monitor can be powered and USBC can power it + the signal can come from either HDMI or USBC for camera work depending on what you want to hook up to it, I used a power bank to power it if the source is HDMI..... The whole thing probably cost me $150...
You don't have speakers, and the monitor isn't touchscreen. I'd say $400 is a good price for a more comprehensive solution such as this one, and I'd say $6-700 if they improved on the drawbacks. But as it is, this looks and feels way too cheap for the asking price. It costs as much as a high end LG TV whilst cheaping out on so many aspects...
@@leonro I have a Bluetooth speaker, and the laptop puts out good enough audio for a small room to hear just perfectly
@@FrequencyOfThought Nice, I agree with you, those portable $80-100 displays are really good I just got one, plus it's way more flexible and upgradable (e.g., bt speaker can be used by itself and is better than the vids product). To the other guy, you can get the touch version for like 30-40 dollars more, and if you want a used briefcase isn't expensive either.
@@debiancool Mines a Lepow, I think I got it for like 89 bucks on shlamazon a while ago
@@debiancool I don't mean to say that this is more cost-effective than buying all items separately, just that it's great as a hassle-free set for people who don't want to deal with setting things up. It's like purchasing an all-in-one PC instead of buying a desktop and monitor separately.
If I could get this purely as a touchscreen monitor built into a case, no "smart"/battery/speakers, I'd buy 3 immediately. I work in entertainment, and a rugged touchscreen monitor built into a case that can deploy quickly would be AMAZING.
I mean there are some pretty fancy portable monitors anymore, some even OLED and 144hz. You could just slide them in a backpack at that point. It's fancy, but I don't think very necessary.
Theres another company making one just like this
This thing looks more like it's supposed to look rugged than be rugged to me. There are plenty of solutions for monitors in road cases, including some that don't even require you to remove the monitor from the road case but just take off the front, or open the top and extend a vesa mount.
If it was only a good panel, I’d buy 3 for client monitors for film production. It would be a really convenient form factor compared to what we usually have, but 250 nits will get you nowhere.
Yeah you can get that... And you don't even need to pay production equipment of prices like you used to... Also I'm not really sure this is rugged necessarily.. it didn't give the impression that there was ruggedness involved lol. But it is incredible over the last seven to 10 years how utterly the price and availability of these things that used to be pretty much bracketed off as rental equipment for production crews has hit the prosumer and then the consumer market even.. No I can't speak to an all-in-one, but I can say that it would not be hard to put an all-in-one together that would be better and probably cheaper by far.. probably one of the other on that case but well.. maybe significantly in one direction of better or cheaper.. and then equivalent at least in the other regard.. I know DIY perks has done a bunch of projects like this but.. That's more boutique than it is practical in a lot of cases, well it is practical it's it's just you know... Not exactly always accessible necessarily for just what you're doing here.. The real trick would again be the rugged part, which I don't think this is.. but the experience I have with OLEDs, in that if they're not made specifically to do that... They're not... But LCDs on the other hand.. they make those in every flavor and it wouldn't be too hard to actually ruggedize an LCD panel of quality and my quality I really just mean like acceptable quality not this quality.. so you know a significant step above this quality but obviously not ideal if you were just going out and getting a monitor or a display TV.
12:45 The JBL Charge is not a stereo speaker, while it does have 2 drivers one is a racetrack woofer and the other is a tweeter. If you want a weather-resistant JBL speaker with stereo you would need to either get an Xtreme or a Boombox with neither of those options being super portable or cheap.
To be fair, he said "stereo ready." According to the JBL Charge 5 product page, their Partyboost feature allows for stereo mode when two of the same speaker models are paired using the JBL app.
Nice to see an outdoor vid on LTT too

pre-pandemic linus?
is it just me or does Linus look way older when he is shaved?
For camping, I initially tried mobile projector. It was very dim, managing white background was quite a battle. I bought cheap 27" monitor (which has a 75hz LG IPS panel) with 12V input, use a 20Ah powerbank to power the monitor. With that, I use a MI TV stick, and a cheap (redmi) soundbar. I am using this setup for 2 years, the powerbank provides more than 3 hours. My total cost is less than 150 USD.
I love David's video contributions so much. I hope he shows up more!
I have done the home theatre in the woods thing. It's pretty simple. You bring some white sheets, mobile projector and Blutooth speakers. You get a much bigger screen, with a much smaller carry size, much lower weight, much lower cost and much more battery time. And probably, much better audio quality. EDIT: For those who may wonder _why_ I have done this, it's not just to watch movies from my hammock. It's because I'm an archer and I love to shoot blunts at it at night. I originally wanted to use a camera and make a bow hunting game. Free idea for anyone who wants it. I still think it's a good one.
I've used a similar type of set up when we used to go watch motor racing. I also invested in a Bluetti solar power bank that runs 12V and 240V uk power and can last 6-12 hours depending on the draw and will recharge on a nice sunny day if you bring your solar panel as well.. If it ain't broke then don't fix it
Watching a fire on a display while camping. Now that's living on the edge.
you can turn the screen off without using the voice assistant: press settings once, then go down to the lower option to customize the menu, add "turn screen off" option
This would be a very good addition to a salesman's portable display or for an individual vending at conventions

Put the screen in the back panel where the speakers are that can still pull forward for rotate then set up to that back can pen up all the way but lock able in different angle. Put speakers in the bigger bottom with arms that pull them up and out to the side of the screen. Then fill in left over space with whole removeable mini PC that easy to change the parts out for. It would look a lot better then.
That squirrel at 11:04 wanted to check out the IR Blaster.
If you removed the speakers, I would see this be good for smaller panelists at expos. You just come in with your promotional material, put it in the corner and have something to catch the eye. No fiddling with organizers or fighting with other panelists, and you have one less thing to worry about.
Haha I'd still take a portable monitor powered over usbC by a small laptop hidden beneath the table or something 😅 Edit: what do you know, they actually mentioned this in the video
Yeah but even plugged in 500 nits is terrible for a setting full of bright lights like that, not to mention it's fairly small and the resolution is crap. I just don't understand who this is for... It's as if they did the bare minimum for it "to exist" and then said fuck it and put a 1200$ sticker on it.
Would barely be visible in a brightly lit expo hall. Buying a $199 40" TV from walmart and just dumpstering it after the event would be a superior experience.

The swivel orientation alone would have made traditional screen vs shmup screen orientation games more usable. There is little reason to use this when we have a decent portable monitor that can carry around with a modified TV Box or Pandora's box. You can already do this on most laptops, but that swivel function is a better safer setup instead of a mounting arm.
David's writing has been really great. Loved this video
Having visited and checked out camping spots in Korea, this is totally the kind of product they would purchase just to ensure their kids have something to watch/use while “camping” in their high end vehicles/tents. 😁

This reminds me of one of those Pelican cases that I see people on Reddit slapping full desktop setups in. If I were camping, I'd rather a laptop, this would be better for a RV or something. Love David's B roll cameos
why was the title changed from “LG made a Suitcase TV” to “LG done GOOFED” ?
A/B testing probably. LTT has multiple titles for a lot of their videos, and after a bit pick the one that is performing better.
Titles normally change a couple of times in the first few days. It's not just a LMG thing either, it seems to be becoming standard. Floatplane still gets the sensible title though.
@@Metal_Maxine Probably because floatplane videos don't make money per a thousand views, so uploaders aren't incentivized to use click bait.
@@TheRavenCoder it's more because some floatplaners scream at them every time they do (even if it's funny)
required by big youtube creators if they want money for their videos
I can see how this could be useful for sales people who need to showcase their product to clients and want to setup 1-2 of those displays as demo booths (like for apps). They could even carry this as a backup in case the projector in the client's meeting room is broken (as it often is).
at that point would a pico projector not be better? (and not to mention a lot lighter)
honestly, if I'm doing 'movie night' camping, I'll get one of those cheap 200 buck projectors and a sheet. At 1200 bucks, I could buy a battery unit, GOOD projector, and a 120 inch screen to put up on the side of the camper or whatever. Leftover change could be used on bluetooth speakers
That forest dance was something else
There's already a huge market for this in live event production. Except you can do it yourself for way cheaper, and you can customize it to your needs
And you can do it actually rugged
7:50 Holy crap thats a Gunbound clone in the wild. Miss it so much
For the speakers you could even do some wierd shit like small corded/wireless speakers you could pull out from the bottom/back of the case, instead of putting them just behind the monitor to make it look better. Also the lag was really horrible. My samsung tablet from 10 years ago has comparable input lag and that at least runs android. Also, i was wondering how this streams movies. Do you connect it to a hotspot from a phone? And is there some way to stream movies without internet from memory? At least a mirror view to stream from you phones downloads?

would be sick to go full gaming mode on an airplane while constantly asking the attendants for snacks.
11:03 Squirrel in tree, best part of video.
CAN WE AFFORD IT? NO STILL WATCHING? YES!!!
Korean camping spots are much closer together than other countries I've lived in. The vast majority also come with power points to plug into, which kind of explains the TV design. Still, for a panel that subpar, the cost should be less than half of what it is. All that said, I still like the idea for car camping.
That thing sems like it would do well in the wedding/event planner profession. Just what someone would need for a photo slideshow or series of short videos where the audio just needs to be loud enough to catch your attention.
Linus this brings up an idea for a challange, namely to get some of your guys working together to build "A Cheep Large Suitcase PC". Trying to make one that is cheeper and better in specification, than that perthetic thing that is clameing to be a "TV".
They would need an actual challenge though, so they would need to do something like can you make it have 24 hours of battery life in the same weight or can it include an entire gaming PC for 4+ hours of portable gaming or something. Just beating this thing for half the price is way, way too easy to make a worthwhile video, literally anybody could do so.
dang... how many videos they have on hold before loosing his beard!
I think they said they usually have 10-14 vids in the bucket, so probably about two weeks worth
@@timnone2924 by then he'll probably have the beard back
Fun review. It, however, doesn't make sense they would undersell the batterylife at 3 hours but you get 4+. My only conclusion is that they neglected to add a setting to turn this battery saving feature off (assuming this was not overlooked for the review). Would make sense given they already seem to have forgotten to add a setting to turn off the screen without needing to use (off by default) voice controls. Cool idea but the screen seems like a complete deal breaker. Probably wouldn't even be able to use it without being literally inside a tent or at night. Along with the other downsides, the product seems almost like e-waste
i use mine for my asus rog ally setup when im travelling, i love it
I love opening a suitcase to watch tv
11:06 Anyone else see the squirrel 😂
It's a big, battery powered device meant to be used on the go, with no built in storage whatsoever. It'd be cheaper to buy a power station to power individual devices separately. The comparison to the Envy Move is very helpful, because the only thing the Envy Move isn't ahead in is the protection, the briefcase aesthetic helps in that regard. For $1200 I'd imagine OLED could be possible, considering a 42" C3 can be found on sale for $900. One 42" panel could be turned into four 21" panels, at 1080p. Even if $600 went towards the panel, that's pretty close to the Envy Move, so surely there's some way to make it better.
Actually so close to a cool product would love to see a higher refresh more gaming monitor centered one
