In part two of this two part series, FRONTLINE explores the secret relationship between Silicon Valley and the National Security Agency, investigating how the U.S. government and tech companies worked together to gather and warehouse personal data. (Aired 2014)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
How did big tech companies react when the government asked them to turn over data on millions of ordinary American citizens? And what do companies like Google, Facebook and Yahoo! really know about you? FRONTLINE Producer Martin Smith ("Money, Power and Wall Street" and "Obama's War") investigates the ways Silicon Valley has played a role in the NSA’s dragnet, and blurred the boundaries of privacy for us all.

Sealing the fate of today's children to be granted a %75 shot in the life time to choose death by starvation or a war beyond our imagination. American people support nothing outside there own box. The next 5 presidents will not have the power to reverse. In the next 6months it will take $174(more) to feed a family of 4. The green new deal will seal the destruction of and horrifying life of our children 10yrs and under. Think about that the next time you tell them how you love them. SHAME. Meanwhile, men like Hayden are the exact opposite: establishment slime who risk nothing whilst encroaching on the rights of millions of ordinary people just to advance their own position in the utterly corrupt institutions they serve. Hayden is so shameless that he even has the audacity to appear in this expose, attempting to exonerate himself. It backfires completely, because his lies and self-serving duplicity are exposed for all to see. The historical record will count him as an establishment stooge and little else. What a pathetic excuse for a man he is.

    • Just how our EX-president kept crying about the "coffers were bare" and "the last administration left us nothing" and "there were no stockpiles" and "we had to start from scratch". When in reality, what had happened was, he, himself had disbanded the NSC's directorate for global health and security and bio-defense back in 2018. So, he actually had 2 years to fill the "coffers" and make sure the cupboards were not, in fact, bare. But instead told reporters "that was a nasty question" when asked about his decision to disband the team that had a playbook. That playbook and that team had the coordination worked out among all of the different departments that would be involved in keeping this country and those 700,000 now dead, safe instead. In all of his courageous leadership and the fact that he can never admit he made a huge, very critical mistake, he just played the blame game. It's always someone else's fault when he fucks up. You are exactly right. Presidents shouldn't blame a previous administration for the disastrous decisions they make. They should take full responsibility for their errors. Especially not keep using that same old line of "we did great" & "we had the best response", when in reality he allowed 1 in every 500 Americans die. Countless others will suffer from what appears to be lifelong, debilitating conditions and residual effects from a virus that could have been kept at bay much, much better. If he hadn't been so worried about messing up his hair and make-up, maybe masks wouldn't have become such a political statement. But his tiny ego couldn't handle wearing a simple mask. Our leaders should be just that and lead by example and not play the blame game.

Another conclusion one can arrive at, is that none of the people, in either the gov or the private sector, that are guilty of felony crimes, will ever be brought to justice, at least in this lifetime. We didn't hear about a single one, who faced the consequences of their admitted crimes, and ironically, the only person facing persecution, is the hero in the story, Edward Snowden... Marketing and LP will always find a way to feed the politicians, who feed the media, who feed the people that this is all in the spirit of the American dream and if you take these big corporations rights away you take away the mom and pop stores too...In the end we're just creating monopolies with mass amounts of power who really are running the world. People laugh and call folks like me who see this conspiracy theorists but if you dig deep these monopolies have their hands in so many different things with so many different companies and people of an elite status, that you...will NEVER be able to crush them. Have you ever asked yourself why people like high ranking military officers are on the board for "instant blood test" or the wives of heads of congress (who are themselves millionaires, involved in politics and private businesses) on the board of the most elite grocery chain that crushes and buys out all the other guys? It's not for our protection, it's for theirs. Even if it was for ours...we have given these people complete and utter power over us in the name of convenience and commerce.

I was appalled when I read it and could not believe our government was giving the right to collect my information if they want to.and look at what they want to. Our government is out of control.

I've only been using a smart phone for about a year and a half or so, I like the convenience but hate the idea. I've also not been using FB much anymore but find it difficult to totally unplug. Hopefully one day I will.
