It's a free tip that someone has kindly used their own time to try and show us mere mortals how to try and not make a mess using silicone sealer, so thank you Bathroom, Plumbing and Fitting for your efforts, even if all the closet experts can't be arsed to put there videos up, it certainly made my bodgit and scarper work look good enough for the Mrs so thank you ;-)
Thank you kindly. Anyone who knew how to silicone would not be watching a tutorial anyway. Thanks for your comments though, much appreciated. 👍
Idk, these comments are just as good! I got rid of another buisness just so I could appreate this!
Internet experts who don’t just make their own videos are my favourite. They would realise how annoying it is if they did, because so many other experts would tell them they are doing it wrong.
Ok that’s nice 🙂
Of all the millions of KZhead videos I have watched I think this is the most useful one I have ever seen! This should be mandatory watching in all schools throughout the world. I’ve met several handyman and plumbers who shake in fear when it comes to applying silicone. I’ve been trying for years to learn how to do it properly, thank you thank you!
Incredible integrity and helpful. Great British workmanship.
He’s wet tooling and fingering the caulking
Excellent in-depth tutorial! As someone who has struggled to create a professional appearance the few times I’ve worked with caulk, this has definitely demystified the methods used. Thank you!
This was a fantastic video, very easy to follow and I like how you talked us through each step. That little silicone smoothing tool is a must have.
Kris-- Thanks so much! Just caulked my tub and toilet and it looks absolutely perfect because I followed this tutorial. Your directions are great!
I'm a professional. To be able to apply silicone just like an experience professional caulker, I have been watching many videos on how to apply it perfectly. This video probably was the 20th one that I watched over about a week time. I gota say that this video is the most thorough one. Although he applied silicone roughly purposely, he taught us how to manage it. Very well done. I am saving this video.
Mindblowing. This video makes me wanna refurbish my bathroom so that I can silicone my shower again and again and again :)
I detect a hint of sarcasm.😂👍
Do It every day mate!
I am always impressed by the tips and tricks to get projects done and looking professional. I wish I would have seen this before. Thank you so much, looking forward to your next project.
This is a great video, he does use a lot of caulk and I understand that the reason he does is for beginners. A few homeowners do not know how to use it and it is better to show an abundance than what a proffesional would do. It almost guarantees the beginner a proper seal the first time. Great video!
Thanks for taking the time to post the video, just a few points. If you measure the silicone tool against the nozzle and cut the nozzle 2mm less than the length of edge you're using on the tool (and cut the nozzle straight, not at an angle), you can run the tool (flat edge every time not the bevel !!) in one go and job done. Also, clean the area with methylated spirit before application (leave to evaporate for a few minutes). Another point (and a basic guide) - low modulus silicone - good flexibility - for areas likely to see flexing of surfaces (acrylic bath/ shower edge against tiles etc.). High modulus silicone - more hard wearing but less flexible - where no/ little flexing is expected (internal corner of a tiled wall, kitchen worktops, porcelain toilets, sink, shower etc)
Ok, I JUST re-watched your video because I got to the point where I needed to caulk around the base of my bath. You are my hero: you make me look like a pro!
A lot of the videos on this show confident passes with little to no gummed up mess (what I’d typically end up with). You show that even if you apply it inconsistently it’s still salvageable and ensures the caulk gets a good seal. Cheers for a clear and helpful clip!
That's such a good video! Pitched perfectly at a level to an average DIY bloke like myself. None of the silly obvious or unnecessary stuff but pure quality non-patronising instruction. Brilliant, thank you. Subscribed, liked and alerts set to new videos.
Whenever anything is posted in any forum there follows a stack of negative comments from people who can all "Do it better" Thank you for a very informative video.
Thanks for that Will. In all honesty I had no idea that this video would get as many views as it has. I guess if a million people watch something then there'll be a few unsavoury folk. Fortunately most are decent like yourself.
The most pathetic way to put silicon on ive ever seen u f...ing joke. U dont wipe with finger 1st , u spray it 1st u f...ing joke! Then use a paddle pop stick to wipe excess (which shouldnt b applied so thick u f...ing joke). U idiots continue to put the wrong methods up on here u f...ing jokers! PATHETIC it shouldnt b allowed!!

This is usually true if the person in the video tells you how everyone else does it wrong.
Hey mate, thanks for your take on the ideal method. My local hardware chain gave different advice, but you explained why you do it your way, and it makes more sense. I'll check out your updated video, too. Cheers
A 63 year old would like to thank you so much. I've spent a lifetime dreading doing the silicon sealant bit of decorating, usually ending up with more on me than the job. After yet another botch, I found your video, watched it twice, cleaned off my botch job then did it again - PROPERLY!! It's the best job I've ever done and the secret is the squirty bottle. Thanks - I don't think I'm ready to go professional yet but I won't dread the sealant job so much in the future. Much respect.
Just thank you for your tome you put in to make the video I enjoyed it and learned something good /useful. How can that be anything but good. From Canada 🇨🇦

Learn how to fix a . . . . . . have u ever tried using white spirt instead of water & w/up liquid? If u dip your finger in white spirit and then run along silicone it works brilliantly........ Excellent video
Thanks for the tip Dave, I'll certainly give it a try. I used to use white vinegar but it was a bit stinky.
Learn how to fix a . . . . . . you'll find your finger doesn't stick and it leaves a lovely shiny finish... I've subscribed to your channel, you're videos are excellent...
Very nice of you to say so Dave
Learn how to fix a . . . . . . Ice works really nice to get smooth finish also
excellent tutorial thank you . I have been making a complete mess with silicon for 30+ years now I have the secret to a perfect finish thanks to you.
Oh man, THANK YOU for this tutorial!! I had limited time to do a re-caulk on my bathroom for a home showing, and I was dreading the job based on past frustration of trying to do it right. Mixed up my solution, bought my smoothing tools for $10, and BOOM, I got unbelievable results!
Hint: If you don't have one of those silicone spatulas, use the plastic tags that come with bread, cut it if needed. Worked great!
😂
Thanks, bud! That was really helpful, and explains why my last DIY-job in the master bath turned out so badly.

This is the best video I have seen on KZhead, I’ve now mastered it without getting in a mess!! Very helpful video
I'm a novice and I learned a lot. Thanks for showing me how to do a professional job.
Love the info, appreciate the effort to share!
great video one of the most valuable peice of tools i have owned. worth every penny. Very good job my friend
Smoothly done! Crystal clear explanation! Thank you!
Very well demonstrated, filled in all the mysterious black-out periods of the how and why silicone should be so neatly done and it is possible. And I sure thank you!
I've been doin this the hard way for far too long. Thank you for this tutorial. Learned a TON!!! End of line.
That was the hard way
Great job
this man sounds like an excellent sales person, sold me. I ended up subscribing.
Who did he sell you to?
Brilliant! Hated caulking silicon because I screwed it up so often. Just bought some smoothing tools and redid a disaster of a bathtub finish (my fault). Took a while to remove the old crappy finish, but re-applying it was easy. Thanks for the video.
Dude, you're the best! I have these silicone applicators & boy I have been using them incorrectly. I just stumbled onto your channel. Thanks a million.
Great work. I thought I was good at caulking but I didn’t even know to use the soapy water with it always used mineral spirits for clean up. Water with latex. Thanks!
I use a credit card or any kind of card with a round edges, does the same job, and I learned the liquid soap trick 2 years ago, helped me a lot. As someone else said, don't lay too much silicone, make it easy to clean.
Kris, you're a diamond! You just saved me from a world of pain. Thank you
Fantastic video, really easy to understand. Have just resealed a section along my bath where the original silicone had failed allowing water to leak in. The finish is so good and blends with the existing silicone u'd never know 😁
Brilliant and great presentation, Thanks!
"It's so straight it follows the curvature of the screen"!! Brilliant!
I'm pretty sure he said, "screed" which would be another name for the tool he was using.
@@amylathrop8329 deffo screen, it follows the shower screen.
Great tips for someone like me who makes a big mess. Love the idea of a bit of spray and constant clean than the little edgers for a nice smooth line. Thanks for the video.
Great demo video. Had both our bathrooms renovated over 12 months ago. Tiler must have used his fingers applying silicon on tiled corners because, there's bacterial growth on some parts of the silicone seal. I'll buy those handy silicone spatula tools from local hardware, remove/reseal joints myself. Makes sense about bacterial growth attaching itself to rough surfaces. We always squeegee shower cubical, then use a chamois to wipe any water/ moisture after a shower, leave the shower cubical door open for ventilation. Electric exhaust fans installed in the ceiling above the shower cubical for steam/moisture extraction. Still bacterial growth after all precautions. Thankyou very much. 👋🇦🇺
Your tutorials are very good, I thank You 😊 for helping me to make a better job of using silicone sealants.
thank you knob
Great video coming to that stage on my bathroom so really helpful video
Excellent job! It couldn't have come at a better time as I'm in the process of doing up our bathroom.
Amazing video. When you first started applying it I honestly thought what are you doing, that's not how to apply silicone. However, I stand corrected. The job is absolutely amazing, and in fact is the best I have seen. I'll be trying this out for sure. This just looks so good, and I have definitely learnt how to do it properly 👍🏽
Brill video with clear & concise explanation. Thanks a mill!!! :)
You're very welcome
Nice movie. Perfect explanation of worki with silicone in bathroom. Thank you
You need your own show, my friend. Very nicely done indeed. Good workers always keep everything clean!
This was excellent! I was going to pay to have my re-caulked, but may just tackle it myself.. Only thing missing in your tutorial is how to cut the tip off the caulk tube so just the right thickness of caulk comes out.. great video!
Nice! I wish I saw this before I just used the masking tape like I saw on this old house :/ When I moved in the white line was so thin it was not even attached to both sides. I had to use a lot like in this video to make sure it was actually sealed.
You've got more spatulas than a pastry chef!
Great video, I’ve just finished sealing round a bath and it looks brilliant 👍 the smoothing tools are a must have, so simple but they do a great job.
Good
Well done
I know enough to say that all criticism of this workmanship is true and well intended, and that much of the praise is of low standard. I am good with my hands in many trade activities, but using silicone I make mess. I have watched men applying sealants and tried to copy them and learned little. After watching this man I believe I can follow his method. His method is not as good as the man's I call to do my work, but I will be very happy to it as well. Applying sealants is an art and one or two comments here come from most capable applicators. This video is of much help to me. Thank you. Subscribed. Australia.
Excellent insights, thank you. Just wondering how did you tackle the rear silicon joint behind the hand basin as it looked too tight to get the spatula in...?
do it before you put the tap in
That's a taping job and then silicon. In my opinion.
Really useful explanation. My caulking generally looks like a war zone.
lol I have dificults to caulk windows corners!
@Casanova Frankenstein Hey! You're talking about my best work!
Wow, those scrapers are a life saver!! Thanks for the tutorial!
Excellent. A skill that has foxed me for years is now sussed. Thank you very much indeed.
After watching hours of plumbing vids, I've concluded that every tradesman on KZhead is a Londoner.
At this point, I'm usually covered head to toe in caulking. Thanks for the tutorial.
Man, that’s why I’m here.
Yep and panicking that I've made an absolute mess of the job already
This was REALLY helpfull! First thought was to just use my finger, but i now have the knowledge and tools do so a 99% better job! Thank you man
Thank you! I have been doing this for years and have just gotten to hate it because I changed my method to use much less caulk. I get a better, longer lasting result by putting in the extra time and effort..and materials. In the long run, it is much cheaper because it lasts longer and looks better than skimpy caulk that gets discolored, mildewed, or dried up, or separates from the surface. Keep up the good work!
The formula is :- speed of the nozzle has to be proportional to the pressure on the trigger of the gun .
Yeh. Learnt that from multiple attempts too. Useful reminder tips though
@@c.w_ its my job .
Looks great. How would those scrapers work on say a bumpy finish like amtico/karmdean flooring? How would you get around the silicon thats pushed in the grooves?
if that happened your fucked in the ass
Touch them back with the point of the tool (grout joints) re-wet the tool and draw the tool across the silicon again.
Be carefull over the joins and watch how far the bleed extends. Touching the silicone back to the bead then tooling over again will solve the bleed problem over tile joints.
I've done this numerous times at home and for friends, but it was far from what I learned in this footage.Thank you so much.👌😊
Excellent video! One of the most articulately explaned videos i've seen. Thanks you
Wow! The mystery is solved! I wish I had seen this years ago. I agree with you, why are all the smart asses searching a 'how to silicone' when they seem to know better than you? Well done mate I really appreciate this.
How do you get over tile grooves? It always leave a bumpy result, right where the groove is.
With the Cramer tool, they have small attachments which allow the tool to go over the grout lines without going in them.
Well that has to be the best silicon sealing job that I as a home DIY'er have ever done .. bar none! And ALL thanks to this video. Not up to the standard of an experienced pro for sure. It'll pass the wife's inspection though and does the practical job it is meant to do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You may have posted it six years ago but it really helped me out today. Cheers!
I found this very useful because beginners (I include myself) tend to use excessive amounts of silicon and this video shows you how to avoid the mess I’ve often found myself in. The use of profiles was new to me! Thank you.
Where do we purchase the special tool thanks Ron
He tells you when he was showing you them. "Screw Fix"
Never use fingers. Cut the silicone tip at a 90° angle instead of 45°. The cut tip should be no more than 10mm, any larger is overkill. Apply the silicone while using the gun at a 90° angle to push the silicone into the join. Let the gun do the work. Finish with the silicone finishing moulds. No spray needed. No fingers used. No bacteria made. No mouldy bathroom in 5 months time.
10mm seems really big no? A full cm?
Just a simple job but I still learn a lot out of your tutorial, thank you very much.
This video saved me a lot of mess today and those plastic things from Screwfix are a lifesaver! Thanks very much!
But how would you slide that tool along a tiled wall? Wouldn’t you get a dip or bump every time you hit a grout line?
@Smash commies I think he simply used that much silicon to demonstrate taking it off...
If you use a finishing tool kit, there's an attachment that makes a T with the tool so that it rides over the tiles grout line so you don't get bumps in your silicone line. The finishing Kits are about £10 in most retailers or online.
@@SteveRogers461 I put masking tape about 15mm from the corner to minimize the bump when you tool over the grout line.
or put it a bit to side so tool is always touching surface the same?
your finger works best... and use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle instead of soap water. I feel like making a video of my own after watching this.
This is excellent.
You are clueless.....so is he. Rank amateur..
Wow. I want to apologize to all the bad joints I made in the past! Thank you!!
Great video, I've always considered myself handy at a lot of job(mainly mechanical and electrical) but when it comes to silicone I'm terrible, thanks for the education 😉👍
I was looking for a video showing me how to silicone like an amateur. Any suggestions?
Yeah, look for ANY video's put out by Bunnings Warehouse. The video's are made by unskilled team members who have only the slightest idea of the task but come across as 'experts'. I should know, I worked for them and was coerced into being filmed for one of their video's despite knowing very little about the subject!
Nice!
Excellent tutorial, no faff just explained really well, im about to do my shower now with confidence!..good job.👍
i don't know why so many haters in comments. I have worked with pro caulkers that would have done this in less than 60 seconds with none of what was in the video. But this guy just showed people how to do something and it did work. Technique could be a bit refined but thank you for sharing. Very well done sir. I handle my own caulk but if I am going to handle someone elses caulk i will know how to please them from now on.
You should do it with the back of an empty silicone tube, its flexible and you can szqueeze it to adjust the radius you want.. also its hollow and takes all your excess and leaves a very clean finish.. try it.
I have seen the back of a silicon tube used before and it is one way of tooling up, but you cannot always squeeze the tube offcut to the same profile - so these silicon tools are far superior. Don't forget to spray over the silicon and wet the tool before tooling up. Studhawk videos
Yes i have tried that method but you can leave a thin film and only wetted silicone tools remove this. Silicone tools are much faster and give a more uniform profile than squeezing a silicon tube off cut which can vary depending on the pressure of the squeeze on the tube. Believe me once you have tried silicon tools you will always use them. Studhawk
The silicone tube will not take off the fine film and how do you get that tube into the corners??
Surprised at the hate comments, if you so called guys know so much about caulking why are you watching this tutorial?
@Mike Barton Good thought. The odds are 50-50 that 100% of the time it will ruin your most visible critical job, never occurring in areas not readily visible!
Becayse those of us that actually know how to do this correctly find it entertaining to watch morons like this.
Bro wtf is this guy doing lol omg did you use enough caulk lol he got it all over the place
because you never know if there is an easier or better way, i get my silicon looking great in 1 pass and dont have any waste, if it did need smoothing off i would leave it 30 mins before sticking my fingers in it, its gets a skin and doesnt stick to ur finger. i also always cut the top to how big or small i need it to be.
@@levitate1078 then, after 30 minutes, you drag the fuck out of it, and it's ruined? Because its already started curing and you just broke the seal? Wow
Probably the best video in applying silicone I’ve seen on you tube
*This is brilliant. thank you for sharing your knowledge.*
I apply mastic, spray water then trail with setting tool. Works first time every time for me.
Nice angle on nozzle always helps.
Exactly - someone else doing it right! Use a washing up liquid mix and some of the mix in a bucket. Flick the tool in the bucket and the silicone falls off into the bucket - no paper towels needed and the tool is wetted for the next pull stroke over the silicone. For best results use a clear antibacterial washing up liquid mist spray. 1:4 mix of washup liquid to water is about right.Studhawk
Exactly agreed - I don't push the silicone in with the finger as i let the gunning in pressure do that - but same system and the guy gets the same abuse i get when i have been a specialist tiling contractor for 30 years and used this system always. #Studhawk How To Tile A BAthroom will show you the same system if you want to check another video for comparrison? Use the tool with wash up liquid mix and have the same mix in a bucket. Shake the tool in the water bucket and the excess falls off into the bucket - no paper towels needed nor masking tape etc. watch the Studhawk silicon video to see the same system used.

I have just found your video, you have no idea how much this has helped me. This is my 3rd attempt at doing silicone and wow, the difference is amazing. Only complaint is you didn’t teach me how to do corners 😊
I never realised how much sealant you have to lose to get a pro finish! Great video, will be using your tips today, many thanks...
James Devanney He wasted far too much product ! Absolute joke !!!
Amateur!
At last someone who accepts this is a necessary evil of achieving a perfect silicon finish - one has to accept the waste factor, but once you do and use this system you realise why. Studhawk videos
Joke far to much waste too much of a mess with toilet roll get a tub for waste spray the silicone down with water and washing up liquid take heavy off with tool then keep spraying. and finish with finger
batman haha that’s exactly his technique... he wasted some silicone that’s it, but it was the cheap shit so no biggie... my only criticism is that he used cheap silicone.. and was a bit heavy with his initial bead , probably cut to much off the end , easily done ..
Thanks, I didn’t know those silicone spatulas existed.
A lot cheaper to buy on ebay
Just did three sides of a sink sitting on tiles. Very pleased with my first time attempt. Took less time to do it than it took to watch this video...although I did watch it twice. Thanks.
This video is fantastic, thank you so much for uploading. It gave me the confidence to redo the mastic on our bathroom and it looks great!
Ah, Use each clean up towel only once, that's where I've always gotten into trouble!
Yes using too much cloths just use one piece and keep folding if over and use each piece all up
I kept cringing every time he wrapped up a big roll of paper just to wipe a small amount of silicone
I cringed too. Quite wasteful with the towels for every bit of silicone.
When you're on a big run. Wipe and chuck. Have bin there. When you mess up it's so frustrating. I use a new box of supermarket tissues for each task group. Once it's half empty you can't guarantee a clean one handed pull.
I can watch a craftsman's pride all day.
It makes it look easy and it probably should be! Thanks for the helpful tutorial.
Not only was that as satisfying as hell, it’s given me some great tips
Quite good but a couple of comments. 1. Brushing to clear dust is not good. That brush could have all sorts of contaminants. 2. Looks good initially but adhesion for the long term best to wipe the surfaces with meths. This gets rid of grease , polish etc. which will degrade adhesion.
Meths is now £7 for a small bottle in the UK and washing up liquid is a PENNY ! Plus the work should be clean if new!
What I didn't hear mentioned and what I do when siliconing is ... I cut the nozzle half way down and at an angle with a sharp Stanley blade ... this helps you to silicone at the right angle .... so many people silicone without cutting the nozzle and it's not the right road to choose ... if you use masking tape the silicone obviously stops at the tape ... the tape has a marginal thickness so when you peel off the tape you end up with a 'ridge' or a 'step' in your silicone and it looks ridiculous ... best thing to do is let it dry, remove the silione and start again without using masking tape.
If you use tape you pull it off right after you smoothed silicone and then once more slight finger touch to get rid of those "ridges".
@@mr.wizeguy8995 you just don't use masking tape when siliconing ... simple rule
There is no rules how you can apply silicone and I do use tape, not always but sometimes and get perfect result. Some people have even asked how i get so straight and smooth silicone seams. And it doesn't leave any ridge when you use wet finger once more after tape is removed.
you are spot on@@mr.wizeguy8995 been doing it like you mention for years with perfect results
As a window fitter I've never used them little tool things, anyone who uses those does not know how to silicone. Cut your nozzle at 90° at the desired thickness, now loaded into the silicone gun hold the gun at 90° to the area to be sealed, press the trigger and move along slowly, stop when you have no travel left in the trigger, release and start again. I can get the same finish he has there without any fingering in, no tape and no scraping tools, this was a dummies guide to soliciting.
From the USA....very helpful video. I need to use the soap mixture more liberally. Also need the scraper kit. Can't wait to try this on my next project.
dont buy all this crap , all you need is a 16 mm pvc electrical pipe , cut off a 10 '' piece and cut it in a +- 60 degree angle (the steaper the angle the bigger the round over if you know what i mean ), when you aplied the sealer , spray it in well, spray your electrical pipe with the soap and run it over the sealer, the sealer will end up in the pipe, and when you lubricate your pipe well the sealer will come easely out to drop in a bucket. then lichtly run your fingre over and your done, those silicon angles he uses only makes a mess
also what he didnt tell you, if you want to last sealer for a long time, vacuum the seems and degrease the surface before applieing the sealer.
also , dont applie so much silicone, its a waste of good product. and dont push it with your finger, if you need to push with your finger either your tip of the gun is to big or you are going to fast so the product doesnt get in from itself.
That’s brill just done my bathroom never seen these spatulas. Thank you 😊
