I think a big reason why Robin worked so well, is because he's basically just the right hand man to the real main character Chrom, who gets to have an actual personality, with actual growth. This is even reflected in how, for all the story beats, Robin basically doesn't appear at all. This onlooker perspective kind of solidifies your role as the player, that is just there to tell these people how to move on the battlefield like the tactician that you are.

This is why Dimitri is my personal favourite Lord in the series. He's far from perfect, in fact he's very flawed, but his personal journey from being a humble prince, to an absolute monster, to a redeemed king is infinitely more interesting than the bland perfect wall that is Byleth. We need more Main characters like Ike, Robin, Alm, Celica, and Shez in future games.

@@camharkness I've played the Persona games and it's much easier to be ok with it there because of how much easier it is to see the MCs as blank slates. Alear is clearly a character that speaks and contributes to the story and they say their name so much.

It sounds like the gameplay is really solid in Engage, but everyone is saying the story is super weak which is a shame. Sounds like they wanted the benefits of a silent protagonist like Link while still having him talk and be the center of attention, which just doesn't work. Wish there was an easily accessible way to play some of the older games like Path of Radiance...

It's not. Ppl are grossly exaggerating based on bias they have from expecting Three Houses 2.0. Engage is like the 3DS entries, and the story is better than Awakening (and definitely Fates). Furthermore this is the most interesting main character we've had in years. Alear is fully voiced and wow, what a difference it makes. Seriously though, the story is good. I'm not saying it's "great" but it's NOT bad. Anyone telling you otherwise is either bandwagoning or is holding this game to unreasonable standards. "Not as interesting as Three Houses" is totally fair. But bad? Heck no. It takes til about chapter 8 to pick up but, it does pick up.

I think it’s less about offending and more that they are torn between wanting the avatar to be an actual character that has a presence in the world and a blank slate that players can easily put themselves into the shoes of the avatar. As a result the only way they can pull it off is by having the avatar be either An amnesiac (Robin and Alear) or Sheltered and naive (Corrin(and to a lesser extent) Byleth (remember Jeralt while raising byleth somehow managed to make him/her a renowned mercenary with a scary reputation……and somehow still be so sheltered that they didn’t know who the knights of seiros or the church were) The only protagonist who was somewhat decent has been well Shez. Unfortunately Shez has an advantage that the other avatars don’t……Shez is the avatar in a spin-off game taking place in a world that already had an entire game to be fleshed out and the expectations are that you played 3 houses before 3 hopes allowing the writers to focus more on how Shez fits in this world more then explaining the world

I think its a false narrative. I believe their real goal is more inline with some modern anime where the protag isnt a character, but a vehicle to add as many parasocial relationships with the main cast. They "have" to be bland to make a soft everyone is friends vibe while having a set of wildly different characters

I love Path Of Radience I’d love to see a remake or at least I hope we get a remake of Fire Emblem Geneology Of The Holy War. It’s the one with Sigurd in it and it has one of the best stories on the SNES however the only way you can play it is with a fan translation I highly recommend it.

See it’s funny, the interviews on Nintendo’s website actually revealed that they were trying to make the main character more relatable in this game. They actually went too relatable at first, and Nintendo ended up telling them to dial it back. I personally am finding Alear to be an enjoyable protagonist. He/she has some pretty funny moments and interactions with the other characters; at least in the early game, I liked how Alfred and Alear were just kinda walking around in cutscenes and playing off of whatever weirdo thing was happening as they traveled. I will admit that I said to myself before the game started that I would try to treat Alear like someone who is not myself, rather a person that I just happen to be controlling. That probably helped in some of the scenes you cited, cause I saw it as people being a bit awkward with this deity that the characters and their great-great-great etc. grandmothers worshipped before them rather than the developers trying to make me feel like these funny pixels are trying to kiss my non-virtual behind.

Part of my problem with Alear is it feels like I'm playing a toddler. He throws tantrums, is treated to constant praise by those around him, and is just generally incredibly dependent. If that was deliberate as a result of the amnesia, I may have found it interesting, but it just isn't.

In corrins Defense he never did whine in his story and Corrin never even did complain ,so Corrins already better than Alear. I feel like the Corrin Hate is very over kill, Overrated and Over exaggerated by the fandom at this point with Corrin as a character .its not that Corrin sucks as Character its the story around fates that sucks. the more people bitch about something on the internet and not replay or diagnose the main problem with any thing the more fake information on it will spread by commenters on the internet and by people spreading blind hate Drama and milking hate on the same subject for the next 20 years on the internet this will always lead immature man child fanbases to group up and show hate Bias towards something that was over blown to a massive degree which will always lead fanbases to show bias hate A.K.A mob mentality look at the clear concept of "versus and compare ,for the truth on anything not 100% relying on fake bias's and word by mouth and over look aspects to what they have been complaining about for 20 years on the internet. the reason why I give Corrin a pass and not Alear is because Corrin at least is self aware, and he makes his own decision's plus people in Fire Emblem Fates do not constantly kiss Corrins Ars. all of the characters in fates on both sides will disagree with corrin on certain plot points and at certain times that at least makes Fire Emblem Fates 50%-75 more believable than Fire Emblem engages entire cast which is really insane.

I think near end game, I see Alear or Luaur (JP) as someone who fears the corrupted because it took away his siblings life which is kinda why Veyle was important to him. Honestly while i say engage story is mid , but there is a theme behind it which is family. Sombron and the villains have twisted ways looking at it while Lumera and other kingdom treated it differently.

It's also kind of a writing excuse in my opinion. Make them the Chosen One, so we don't need any good reason for them to be made the leader of an army which follows them entirely out of conviction. It's been done to death by now.

Nothing against Alear, the voice actors did fine, but Engage' writing in general was just subpar and I would always, always rather have a silent protagonist with flavor dialogue options than this. If we could get a well written, well voiced main character with a goal, growth and personality I wouldnt mind it, but I feel like that rarely, if ever happens in jrpgs, so I think we should stick to silent self insert protagonist with flavor dialogue choices, it genuinely just makes the game more enjoyable for me. I loved Awakening, its what got me into FE, Fates was pretty good even with its flaws tho I do agree with your take, Three Houses is one of my favorite games of all times exactly because we play a silent self insert protagonist and it has so much life sim in it (I do see its flaws, but just wish more of it), and Engage is just a game, one I barely finished and wont remember for any extended period of time.

Alear was good, but I feel this is the time to CAN the Avatar concept from the series since it's run it's course! Shez (and thank god they used how that character was done in Three Hopes instead of how Byleth was done in Three Houses) at least still let you select dialogue choices similar to Shepard from Mass Effect in that their sounded off! But even that showed they don't know how to do Avatars! Alear is still held back by the fact their an Avatar and not their own person! Letting us the player choose stuff doesn't mean we have to BE the character! As their are ALOT of games that let you pick shit and the characters will pick it because you did! NOT because "you are the character" Frankly, Avatars should NEVER go beyond being like Robin and Byleth, but NEVER overshadow the Lords in general. Corrin's issue was they were reverse Robin with Azura in Chrom's position but it feels alot more like Azura is the Main Lord and we're (As Corrin) just along for the ride and are treated as the main lord. Despite being a mute! Byleth kind of works (if you use your imagination CURSE YOU MUTE PROTAGONIST) in that they are center to the plot, while still being the "Robin" in that we're on the side as the Lord's "number 2" (and why Silver Snow was a failure and explains alot WHY Koei did NOT make a varient of that route in Three Hopes) since I felt the main point of 3H and 3Hopes was we were the Number 2 (or 3 because of the "Main Vassels" Dedue/Hubert/Hilda-Lorenz) who helped bring the Lord we selected Victory! (and Silver Snow defeated that purpose by making US the Lord...who can't speak and has no "main Lord" to attach to because "we can't speak" God why couldn't Rhea have been playable) Byleth and Shez were at their best when the character who was the "main star" was Edelgard/Dimitri/Claude and not us! Yeah the side stuff like Those who Sliter in the Dark, Sothis/Arval, ETC were still equally important and gave us equal relevence! But the main conflict was the three lords, and that stuff was more "clean up" for their ambitions to see fruit! No problems there What makes Alear better then Corrin is that they are at least the main character and not Reverse Robin at the very least, though you DO have to go through some slog parts to get to that (Alear only really starts to get interesting around the Mid to Late Game story) Whatever you like Engage's story or not (other then parts I actually had a good time with the story and characters, never had a FE character I hated....other then Matthis but that's not here or there!) it at least showed the weakness of 3Houses and Fates in that the Route system wasn't a very good idea! As one FE KZheadr said best "I'll take one COMPLETE story done well enough, over having it cut into three/FOUR halves I have to play through THREE-FOUR TIMES and water down the experience This is just me saying my piece on this! Take it or ignore it. I said what I have to say! Good video though! When I watch "dislike or disappointment" vids I like them when it isn't "following trends" (People hate this so I must hate it because people hate this HAHAHAHA) and I can agree with you (I can LOVE stuff while still acknowledge the stuff that's dislikable and why some would dislike it! As long as that person is being LEGIT and not "Hey look at me, I'm hating the Overyhyped thing to be Special)

1:00 It's usually a red flag when you see a design like that. Where up to now they keep the designs not particularly out there. Suddenly in a long string of trends they've been following, they come out with this overly designed mess? It seems to me that the quality of modern game writing depends on how much the writing revolves around the avatar character. With game where the main character and the avatar are one and the same having worse writing than games where they do not.

My problem with byleth and the divine dragon dude isn’t that they’re gods or whatever it’s that unlike say robin (who was also super special and people liked and respected him right away excluding frederick) I don’t get to make them the way i want to. Robin could be the tactician class or you could spec him into an assassin, a calvary unit, pure magic an axe unit or anything you wanted and not lose out on being a effective member. He was a more bland character sure but he was STILL your character your choice. Byleth and toothpaste man want to do both. The divine dragon and enlightened one classes are so OP that why would you bother swapping to anything else? If I’m naming the character and the devs want them to be a extension of a generic protagonist LET ME AT LEAST DECIDE THE CLASS I WANT TO PLAY!! Byleth can at least cast magic know who can’t? Ice cream boy.

I swear the longer we go without SOME kind of Path of Radiance re-release the longer I contemplate commuting suicune. Fire Emblem has a decent, non-self insert character SITTING RIGHT THERE but god forbid we have that when we can just have another Jesus-Kun.

@@-lord1754 He's a customizable lord given a blander than bread personality so everyone can "relate" to him, a special boy title/status so everyone loves and praises them, and amnesia so the game can justify vomiting exposition at him/us. Just like Byleth and Corrin and Robin (to an extent) and *apparently* Kris (never played that one) as well. Look, I like this game, but I'm not abut to lie to myself to make it seem better than it actually is.

I'm actually starting to appreciate Byleth more. Their understated emotional reactions not only are often more effective than Alear's emoting, but they fit their character, which is why it's such a big deal that they break down crying when their father dies and end up consumed with a desire for revenge. Byleth plays an important role in the story, but in the end, the house leader is ultimately more important to the narrative, especially in Part 2. Alear wouldn't be as bad if they were in support of a Lord, like Robin or Byleth, but they can't stand well on their own.

What really destroys Alear's charisma as a protagonist is that she relies only on Emblems to fight, and without them she is a weak swordfighter. I'm not asking her to be as strong as Ike, but at some point you've to be strong enough to overcome individual issues. Here, Alear is just carried by every older FE lords...

I mean, advantage in Persona 3 is the emphasis the game put on writing its characters like actual people who had lives (which the later titles seemed to forget) You could watch characters have conversations and development separate from you throughout the story; you were just a part of their lives, not the entirety of it. It is just the tip of an entire glacier of shit I love about Persona 3 (and replaying it), and it is one of the reasons why I just enjoy Persona 5 less

I agree with all your points about Alear and the other avatars but you really lose me when you were trying to make Ike the gold standard of Fire Emblem protagonists. He's just your average shonen protagonist. It doesn't matter how much the game tries to paint him as rash if the game never punish him for that, unlike Sigurd of Leif. He always end up doing the right thing, even Micaiah who is initially depicted as a goody-two-shoes ends up doing some shady stuff at the wrong side of the war. There are a lot of protagonists that have charisma (Hector, Lyn) or subversive (Edelgard, Dimitri), I don't know why someone won't relate to them only because they are from the nobility. It's a credible way to justify why a young inexperienced teen is in charge of an army. Also at the end of the day Ike was the son of both a noble who was the best swordman of the land and the guardian of the medallion.

Strong disagree! Alear is my favourite protagonist by far because she is so relatable, genuine, and humble. She wakes up in a world where everyone tells her she is a Goddess. Awkward to say the least and her actions reflect that. At first, she dislikes all the attention but she learns she just kinda has to accept it. Yet in her supports, she always tries to be humble and say that everyone’s lives do not revolve around her. She joins characters on their hobbies like dancing and running even if she isn’t comfortable. I know that characters saying ‘Divine One’ is just a way to avoid saying the player chosen name, but it still has the desired effect. She’s extremely charming and a big step up from the silent Byleth. Not to mention she actually dies and even though she is ressurrected, she becomes an Emblem… which is even creepier when you get the horrifying bad ending. Alear is doomed to serve under a corrupted Veyle, never being able to speak a word as she’s forced to kill others against her will; that would make for a great ‘what if’ sequel game. Despite criticism, I also love her design which shows the perfect blend of light and dark with the blue and red respectively. She’s just so lovable and cute :3

Ike's overrated btw, he has the emotional range of a plank, he might as well been voiceless like Byleth, "I can't cry so cry for me" < when your dad dies, like wut?. And he's not really just some dude, his dad was a noble, so by extension he's nobility as well. He's more like Lyn, where lineage he's nobility but wasn't raised as one.

I agree about the world building. Three Houses had a detailed history for Fodlan, with many significant events from a millennium ago to the previous decade playing a role in the narrative and influencing characters and the setting. Here, you're basically given four kingdoms with a single signature trait, and told almost nothing about the world.

Final verdict after 50 hours: the gameplay is incredible. Probably the best in the entire series. The animations and some of the characters are good too. For the most part though, the story is awful and most of the cast is bland. It’s a solid 7 that could be a lot better if it had a decent plot. Ironically this game is sort of the opposite of Three Houses which I thought had a great story and characters but very questionable gameplay design choices.

@@camharkness depends on the player, everyone has their own tastes. Some people put more weight and value on gameplay than storytelling or characters. In the former option, gameplay would be more of a factor in scoring than the latter which would bring the score more up than the other aspects bringing it down.

Gonna have to disagree with saying three houses had a bad mc. He was not that praised and in any route they would get murdered by the one that cared about them on the opposite side for their betrayal with only little regret. I don't mind it since it was my first fire emblem game, but it REALLY roped me into the series because of it, which says a lot about it as a stand alone game. Whether its a good FIRE EMBLEM game or protagonist I wouldnt know, probably not because marth and ike exist. But, on its own theres an actuall decent reason he has no emotion. Dude was born dead and has no heart. Story has genuinely good lore and you dont need to have played other fire emblem games or know the lore to enjoy it. Heck, you dont even need to know what a fire emblem IS. Overall, its sold better than past titles for a reason and had a warriors game spinoff made because of its good reception. But, I guess a hard-core fire emblem enjoyer would have an issue with this seeing as, again, fire emblem used to be MUCH different

FE characters, side characters and protagonists alike, all have a good shot at being 'interesting' in the context of FE as a series... but you'll almost always find deeper characters outside of IS's works. Same applies to FE3H. Probably the most interesting story concept made in the series so far, but far from being the best video game story of all time. Supports? Sure C-B/A/S can get you some juicy info, but stories that don't have a support mechanic often achieve strong bonds among a smaller cast.

Ike wasn't a true nobody, he's the son of a legendary hero that started a mercenary company in later life, that assessment of Ike being 'just some guy' is inaccurate. And while I can't stand Ike for being so boring and duller than Felix's blade, I can appreciate his contribution to the series overall and am happy for those who like him so. Ike is a very important character to Fire Emblem and to many fans, but I'm not a fan of his and just don't care for him or his game's cast overall. Fates and Corrin came at the then lowest point in my life, I contemplated suicide just to get away from my abuser at the time, I partially tribute Corrin and his story (as I have two sets of half siblings myself and wish we could all be together) for me not going through with it. I see Corrin as a special character the way a huge percentage of FE fans see Ike, Hector or Lyn, and despite how bad Fates truly is, and it is bad overall, I still love Corrin and am happy being wrong for doing so. I thank you for your video and even if I don't agree with some of your points, I find your opinions just as equal as mine, thank you and have a great day. P.S. I do agree on Alear, IS should go back to having a pre-set lord, it might appease older fans better.

In my honest opinion the plot actively hurts the game. It would have been a gem if it had a story on the level of Fe9. Instead we got a trash tier story filled with one note joke characters. The "big emotional moments" are in no way earned and feel like wastes of time. When I revisit the game I will be skipping the story on every replay.

too true the casualization of the franchise is killing it, gets more sales but not really more fans, just those liking elements of a game than the actual idea of it which leads to the next game turning them off or screwing over actual fans silent protags can work with the right writing foresight - robin works as a not the main lead type to chrom like u the player are, - classic fallout enough dialogue choices to construct a actual conversation - not being over praised at the start - character in universe making mistakes, not infalliable only way we'll get back on track is if people point it out to them enough - radiant's issue was at worse just ironing out ideas and gameplay to the now level and tempered expectations higher ups didn't have for it, not that it was bad

Nintendo should create a badass protagonist, i mean, Ike and byleth could fill the role before, but, a character that doesnt like social interaction nor cute things and is more lone wolf when acting, less friendly, but with time can construct friendship and be more "sociable". Nintendo, there are a bunch of those within anime/video game characters, just make one like that.

Fire Emblem Echoes is a really good game. I tried to play the more modern ones and it's super fucking dumb. Echoes is a remake so it at least tries to be good, but it still has really dumb dialogue. There is something mentally wrong with the writers of this franchise. I really wish they would fire all of them.

The funniest thing about three hopes is that since Byleth isn't the protagonist anymore he's allowed to speak and actually has some semblance of character
I think a big reason why Robin worked so well, is because he's basically just the right hand man to the real main character Chrom, who gets to have an actual personality, with actual growth. This is even reflected in how, for all the story beats, Robin basically doesn't appear at all. This onlooker perspective kind of solidifies your role as the player, that is just there to tell these people how to move on the battlefield like the tactician that you are.
It respected the dynamic old games had that, while they praised you for your stratagems, you, their tactician, you weren't Lyn, Hector or Ellwood. You aren't Marth, you're their ally.
Until you get to the final arc where he takes over the spotlight.

Ike from path of radiance and Raident Dawn was the last good fire emblem protag.I am very sick of this Amnesia self insert crap.it makes sence in games like "Star Wars The Old Replublic" but not games like fire emblem.
This is why Dimitri is my personal favourite Lord in the series. He's far from perfect, in fact he's very flawed, but his personal journey from being a humble prince, to an absolute monster, to a redeemed king is infinitely more interesting than the bland perfect wall that is Byleth. We need more Main characters like Ike, Robin, Alm, Celica, and Shez in future games.

It's not. Ppl are grossly exaggerating based on bias they have from expecting Three Houses 2.0. Engage is like the 3DS entries, and the story is better than Awakening (and definitely Fates). Furthermore this is the most interesting main character we've had in years. Alear is fully voiced and wow, what a difference it makes. Seriously though, the story is good. I'm not saying it's "great" but it's NOT bad. Anyone telling you otherwise is either bandwagoning or is holding this game to unreasonable standards. "Not as interesting as Three Houses" is totally fair. But bad? Heck no. It takes til about chapter 8 to pick up but, it does pick up.

I'm slightly curious if they're writing these new main characters in such a way so they have no real voice / don't have to give any personal opinions and offend any players as a result? Either that or the developers are just so busy programming the gameplay that the characters are the last thing they care about nowadays? Very informative / entertaining video btw. They’re trying to make them your own avatar, for you to shape and create, done way too much-
I think it’s less about offending and more that they are torn between wanting the avatar to be an actual character that has a presence in the world and a blank slate that players can easily put themselves into the shoes of the avatar. As a result the only way they can pull it off is by having the avatar be either An amnesiac (Robin and Alear) or Sheltered and naive (Corrin(and to a lesser extent) Byleth (remember Jeralt while raising byleth somehow managed to make him/her a renowned mercenary with a scary reputation……and somehow still be so sheltered that they didn’t know who the knights of seiros or the church were) The only protagonist who was somewhat decent has been well Shez. Unfortunately Shez has an advantage that the other avatars don’t……Shez is the avatar in a spin-off game taking place in a world that already had an entire game to be fleshed out and the expectations are that you played 3 houses before 3 hopes allowing the writers to focus more on how Shez fits in this world more then explaining the world
I think its a false narrative. I believe their real goal is more inline with some modern anime where the protag isnt a character, but a vehicle to add as many parasocial relationships with the main cast. They "have" to be bland to make a soft everyone is friends vibe while having a set of wildly different characters
I love Path Of Radience I’d love to see a remake or at least I hope we get a remake of Fire Emblem Geneology Of The Holy War. It’s the one with Sigurd in it and it has one of the best stories on the SNES however the only way you can play it is with a fan translation I highly recommend it.

They actually went too relatable at first, and Nintendo ended up telling them to dial it back. I personally am finding Alear to be an enjoyable protagonist. He/she has some pretty funny moments and interactions with the other characters; at least in the early game, I liked how Alfred and Alear were just kinda walking around in cutscenes and playing off of whatever weirdo thing was happening as they traveled. I will admit that I said to myself before the game started that I would try to treat Alear like someone who is not myself, rather a person that I just happen to be controlling. That probably helped in some of the scenes you cited, cause I saw it as people being a bit awkward with this deity that the characters and their great-great-great etc. grandmothers worshipped before them rather than the developers trying to make me feel like these funny pixels are trying to kiss my non-virtual behind.
Honestly the reactions of some of these characters make complete sense, even Framme. Like imagine if Jesus just woke up and started walking around. Ppl would freak out. Well Alear literally has statues in Churches, so yeah

Part of my problem with Alear is it feels like I'm playing a toddler. He throws tantrums, is treated to constant praise by those around him, and is just generally incredibly dependent. If that was deliberate as a result of the amnesia, I may have found it interesting, but it just isn't.

I think near end game, I see Alear or Luaur (JP) as someone who fears the corrupted because it took away his siblings life which is kinda why Veyle was important to him. Honestly while i say engage story is mid , but there is a theme behind it which is family. Sombron and the villains have twisted ways looking at it while Lumera and other kingdom treated it differently.

In terms of actual character writing Alear is more or less in line with the previous two protags. It’s just being voiced makes the flaws in the writing stand out more
New mystery of the emblem's My unit was one of my favorites of the self inserts.
Nothing against Alear, the voice actors did fine, but Engage' writing in general was just subpar and I would always, always rather have a silent protagonist with flavor dialogue options than this. If we could get a well written, well voiced main character with a goal, growth and personality I wouldnt mind it, but I feel like that rarely, if ever happens in jrpgs, so I think we should stick to silent self insert protagonist with flavor dialogue choices, it genuinely just makes the game more enjoyable for me. I loved Awakening, its what got me into FE, Fates was pretty good even with its flaws tho I do agree with your take, Three Houses is one of my favorite games of all times exactly because we play a silent self insert protagonist and it has so much life sim in it (I do see its flaws, but just wish more of it), and Engage is just a game, one I barely finished and wont remember for any extended period of time.
Alear was good, but I feel this is the time to CAN the Avatar concept from the series since it's run it's course! Shez (and thank god they used how that character was done in Three Hopes instead of how Byleth was done in Three Houses) at least still let you select dialogue choices similar to Shepard from Mass Effect in that their sounded off! But even that showed they don't know how to do Avatars! Alear is still held back by the fact their an Avatar and not their own person! Letting us the player choose stuff doesn't mean we have to BE the character! As their are ALOT of games that let you pick shit and the characters will pick it because you did! NOT because "you are the character" Frankly, Avatars should NEVER go beyond being like Robin and Byleth, but NEVER overshadow the Lords in general. Corrin's issue was they were reverse Robin with Azura in Chrom's position but it feels alot more like Azura is the Main Lord and we're (As Corrin) just along for the ride and are treated as the main lord. Despite being a mute! Byleth kind of works (if you use your imagination CURSE YOU MUTE PROTAGONIST) in that they are center to the plot, while still being the "Robin" in that we're on the side as the Lord's "number 2" (and why Silver Snow was a failure and explains alot WHY Koei did NOT make a varient of that route in Three Hopes) since I felt the main point of 3H and 3Hopes was we were the Number 2 (or 3 because of the "Main Vassels" Dedue/Hubert/Hilda-Lorenz) who helped bring the Lord we selected Victory! (and Silver Snow defeated that purpose by making US the Lord...who can't speak and has no "main Lord" to attach to because "we can't speak" God why couldn't Rhea have been playable) Byleth and Shez were at their best when the character who was the "main star" was Edelgard/Dimitri/Claude and not us! Yeah the side stuff like Those who Sliter in the Dark, Sothis/Arval, ETC were still equally important and gave us equal relevence! But the main conflict was the three lords, and that stuff was more "clean up" for their ambitions to see fruit! No problems there What makes Alear better then Corrin is that they are at least the main character and not Reverse Robin at the very least, though you DO have to go through some slog parts to get to that (Alear only really starts to get interesting around the Mid to Late Game story) Whatever you like Engage's story or not (other then parts I actually had a good time with the story and characters, never had a FE character I hated....other then Matthis but that's not here or there!) it at least showed the weakness of 3Houses and Fates in that the Route system wasn't a very good idea! As one FE KZheadr said best "I'll take one COMPLETE story done well enough, over having it cut into three/FOUR halves I have to play through THREE-FOUR TIMES and water down the experience This is just me saying my piece on this! Take it or ignore it. I said what I have to say! Good video though! When I watch "dislike or disappointment" vids I like them when it isn't "following trends" (People hate this so I must hate it because people hate this HAHAHAHA) and I can agree with you (I can LOVE stuff while still acknowledge the stuff that's dislikable and why some would dislike it! I was half expecting a arrogant dragon-god character who gets humbled and mellows out from Engage Protag. Especially with the color sceme. It seems to me that the quality of modern game writing depends on how much the writing revolves around the avatar character. With game where the main character and the avatar are one and the same having worse writing than games where they do not.
My problem with byleth and the divine dragon dude isn’t that they’re gods or whatever it’s that unlike say robin (who was also super special and people liked and respected him right away excluding frederick) I don’t get to make them the way i want to. Robin could be the tactician class or you could spec him into an assassin, a calvary unit, pure magic an axe unit or anything you wanted and not lose out on being a effective member. He was a more bland character sure but he was STILL your character your choice. Byleth and toothpaste man want to do both. The divine dragon and enlightened one classes are so OP that why would you bother swapping to anything else? If I’m naming the character and the devs want them to be a extension of a generic protagonist LET ME AT LEAST DECIDE THE CLASS I WANT TO PLAY!! Byleth can at least cast magic know who can’t? Ice cream boy.

I'm actually starting to appreciate Byleth more. Their understated emotional reactions not only are often more effective than Alear's emoting, but they fit their character, which is why it's such a big deal that they break down crying when their father dies and end up consumed with a desire for revenge. Byleth plays an important role in the story, but in the end, the house leader is ultimately more important to the narrative, especially in Part 2. Alear wouldn't be as bad if they were in support of a Lord, like Robin or Byleth, but they can't stand well on their own.
Are you sure about the house leader thing? The theme of the story is that they can’t accomplish their goals without Byleth, something I do criticize the story of 3 Houses for.

What really destroys Alear's charisma as a protagonist is that she relies only on Emblems to fight, and without them she is a weak swordfighter. I'm not asking her to be as strong as Ike, but at some point you've to be strong enough to overcome individual issues. Here, Alear is just carried by every older FE lords...
They do become a strong sword fighter if you train Alear good enough.

I mean, advantage in Persona 3 is the emphasis the game put on writing its characters like actual people who had lives (which the later titles seemed to forget) You could watch characters have conversations and development separate from you throughout the story; you were just a part of their lives, not the entirety of it. It is just the tip of an entire glacier of shit I love about Persona 3 (and replaying it), and it is one of the reasons why I just enjoy Persona 5 less
Alear was the absolutely worst part of this game (which is saying a lot, there’s so much to loathe about it) and ruined every scene he opened his mouth in. Which is almost every scene.
I can't wait to end up liking the story and getting death threats from the Fe fandom again, like I've gotten for saying fe7 isn't that good because of the forced tutorial and fe8 isn't a bad game, and my favorite, the golden deer route is my favorite.

I agree with all your points about Alear and the other avatars but you really lose me when you were trying to make Ike the gold standard of Fire Emblem protagonists. He's just your average shonen protagonist. It doesn't matter how much the game tries to paint him as rash if the game never punish him for that, unlike Sigurd of Leif. He always end up doing the right thing, even Micaiah who is initially depicted as a goody-two-shoes ends up doing some shady stuff at the wrong side of the war. There are a lot of protagonists that have charisma (Hector, Lyn) or subversive (Edelgard, Dimitri), I don't know why someone won't relate to them only because they are from the nobility. It's a credible way to justify why a young inexperienced teen is in charge of an army. Also at the end of the day Ike was the son of both a noble who was the best swordman of the land and the guardian of the medallion.

Strong disagree! Alear is my favourite protagonist by far because she is so relatable, genuine, and humble. She wakes up in a world where everyone tells her she is a Goddess. Awkward to say the least and her actions reflect that. At first, she dislikes all the attention but she learns she just kinda has to accept it. Yet in her supports, she always tries to be humble and say that everyone’s lives do not revolve around her. She joins characters on their hobbies like dancing and running even if she isn’t comfortable. I know that characters saying ‘Divine One’ is just a way to avoid saying the player chosen name, but it still has the desired effect. She’s extremely charming and a big step up from the silent Byleth. Not to mention she actually dies and even though she is ressurrected, she becomes an Emblem… which is even creepier when you get the horrifying bad ending. Alear is doomed to serve under a corrupted Veyle, never being able to speak a word as she’s forced to kill others against her will; that would make for a great ‘what if’ sequel game. Despite criticism, I also love her design which shows the perfect blend of light and dark with the blue and red respectively. She’s just so lovable and cute :3

"world building" ? that's debatable, they tell you next nothing about the countries and people, other than geography. And he's not really just some dude, his dad was a noble, so by extension he's nobility as well. He's more like Lyn, where lineage he's nobility but wasn't raised as one.

I agree about the world building. Three Houses had a detailed history for Fodlan, with many significant events from a millennium ago to the previous decade playing a role in the narrative and influencing characters and the setting. Here, you're basically given four kingdoms with a single signature trait, and told almost nothing about the world.
Final verdict after 50 hours: the gameplay is incredible. Probably the best in the entire series. The animations and some of the characters are good too. For the most part though, the story is awful and most of the cast is bland. It’s a solid 7 that could be a lot better if it had a decent plot. Ironically this game is sort of the opposite of Three Houses which I thought had a great story and characters but very questionable gameplay design choices.

@@camharkness depends on the player, everyone has their own tastes. Some people put more weight and value on gameplay than storytelling or characters. In the former option, gameplay would be more of a factor in scoring than the latter which would bring the score more up than the other aspects bringing it down.
Gonna have to disagree with saying three houses had a bad mc. He was not that praised and in any route they would get murdered by the one that cared about them on the opposite side for their betrayal with only little regret. I don't mind it since it was my first fire emblem game, but it REALLY roped me into the series because of it, which says a lot about it as a stand alone game. Whether its a good FIRE EMBLEM game or protagonist I wouldnt know, probably not because marth and ike exist. But, on its own theres an actuall decent reason he has no emotion. Dude was born dead and has no heart. Story has genuinely good lore and you dont need to have played other fire emblem games or know the lore to enjoy it. Heck, you dont even need to know what a fire emblem IS. Overall, its sold better than past titles for a reason and had a warriors game spinoff made because of its good reception. But, I guess a hard-core fire emblem enjoyer would have an issue with this seeing as, again, fire emblem used to be MUCH different
FE characters, side characters and protagonists alike, all have a good shot at being 'interesting' in the context of FE as a series... but you'll almost always find deeper characters outside of IS's works. Same applies to FE3H. Probably the most interesting story concept made in the series so far, but far from being the best video game story of all time. Supports? Sure C-B/A/S can get you some juicy info, but stories that don't have a support mechanic often achieve strong bonds among a smaller cast.
Ike wasn't a true nobody, he's the son of a legendary hero that started a mercenary company in later life, that assessment of Ike being 'just some guy' is inaccurate. And while I can't stand Ike for being so boring and duller than Felix's blade, I can appreciate his contribution to the series overall and am happy for those who like him so. Ike is a very important character to Fire Emblem and to many fans, but I'm not a fan of his and just don't care for him or his game's cast overall. Fates and Corrin came at the then lowest point in my life, I contemplated suicide just to get away from my abuser at the time, I partially tribute Corrin and his story (as I have two sets of half siblings myself and wish we could all be together) for me not going through with it. I see Corrin as a special character the way a huge percentage of FE fans see Ike, Hector or Lyn, and despite how bad Fates truly is, and it is bad overall, I still love Corrin and am happy being wrong for doing so. No- I’m actually gonna disagree on this one. Alear is one of the few things this story did right. I think it’s the only decent version of the avatar done to date, but I really hope the avatar thing just dies now.
Having beaten the game I agree. I really do like Alear. And the more we learned about their past life and what they were like made me like them more.

@@julienherard414 Guilty of what Engage is being accused of. There's a reason people don't remember Wil or Wallace. They aren't any less shallow than any other character.
In my honest opinion the plot actively hurts the game. It would have been a gem if it had a story on the level of Fe9. Instead we got a trash tier story filled with one note joke characters. The "big emotional moments" are in no way earned and feel like wastes of time. When I revisit the game I will be skipping the story on every replay.

too true the casualization of the franchise is killing it, gets more sales but not really more fans, just those liking elements of a game than the actual idea of it which leads to the next game turning them off or screwing over actual fans silent protags can work with the right writing foresight - robin works as a not the main lead type to chrom like u the player are, - classic fallout enough dialogue choices to construct a actual conversation - not being over praised at the start - character in universe making mistakes, not infalliable only way we'll get back on track is if people point it out to them enough - radiant's issue was at worse just ironing out ideas and gameplay to the now level and tempered expectations higher ups didn't have for it, not that it was bad

Skipping the story is fine, but read the supports, they're really good
Nintendo should create a badass protagonist, i mean, Ike and byleth could fill the role before, but, a character that doesnt like social interaction nor cute things and is more lone wolf when acting, less friendly, but with time can construct friendship and be more "sociable". Nintendo, there are a bunch of those within anime/video game characters, just make one like that.
We've had characters like that in the series before.

Because if you actually did look into Engage critically and hold it to the same standard as 3 Houses, you'd see that it has absolutely garbage writing. Nothing in 3H is close to as bad as the events of Chapters 10 & 17 alone.

Fire Emblem Echoes is a really good game. I tried to play the more modern ones and it's super fucking dumb. Echoes is a remake so it at least tries to be good, but it still has really dumb dialogue. There is something mentally wrong with the writers of this franchise. I really wish they would fire all of them.
People will hate me for this: But what Fire Emblem absolutely sucks at is the character writing, i swear Valkyria Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles have much more better characters and they're way more memorable (I'm dead serious) because they don't rely on talking to strangers so they could join them BS.
