  • I mixed that same Amsoil atf in a Toyota/scion FRS with around 40k miles and shifting improved. (Did it twice at about a month difference to have mostly Amsoil in). Moved on to mix 5q Amsoil into a 2015 sienna trans with about 45k miles. It is working smoothly. Plan on keep adding Amsoil in the future. Did it many years ago on two other vehicles with great long term results.

  • Good stuff. I just got a Vibe (09 with 127k miles). The fluid is brown with a red hue still that turns purple after a long drive. Shifting is fine aside from some jerkiness when the fluid is cold. I'm just surprised how many mechanics told me to let it be, because the history doesn't show any transmission fluid change. It seems that I'm maybe 10k miles away from having damage with the old fluid.

  • You are correct about leaving a little dirty oil in the trans. I just watched a Toyota tech claim it was good to leave a little in because it’ll add a little friction fir the plates to grab😛😛 Unfortunately I was led to believe that my 3rd gen Tacoma could go 150,000 miles before the trans fluid needed changing. I felt that didn’t seem right. Today my truck was at 78,000 on its first fluid swap. It was dark and no surprise since I live in the so called mountains and carry a couple of tons in the truck bed driving up the mountain once a month. Today I put in 3.5 quarts of Amsoil fuel signature series and bled the 1/2 quart out. I noticed an immediate improvement. I’ll run this for one month and do a 3 quart drain and fill to get it close to mostly Amsoil and I’ll repeat this in another 10,000 miles.

I’m going to take off the transmission pan, clean the pan, & replace the transmission filter. Am I ok to use AmsOil even though there may still be some Toyota Genuine WS? But I'll be going to Amsoil ATF before winter, did the switch to Amsoil Signature 5W-30 for the engine with Lucas Synthetic Stabilizer, best switch I've made for my car. 2016 Malibu 1.5T, still has the original timing chain

I actually changed the cooler filter (paper one) and the under pan filter (metal) at 55k as my car is used and didn't know what was done to it. Anyway, after the change it's much quieter and smoother and I just changed the fluid 1k ago (OEM J4) when I replaced the filters. Next change in 30Ka with Amsoil!

  • There is always some mixing that is going to happen. It is difficult to get all of the old fluid out. It is inside the valve body still and I don't know of any modern cars with a torque converter you can drain. Yes, some vehicles had that sort of thing. They would have a drain plug on the torque converter that if lined up with a special hole you could remove the plug and drain that fluid. Without it your only way to get rid of the old fluid is a potentially harmful flush or draining and filling twice, running the vehicle some in between both drain and fills (or you will just drain the new fluid you added if you don't ☹. You can do more than 2 drain and fills and that may change out some more old fluid. That also drains out some new fluid that has become mixed in. You may even want to take the pan off if you are careful enough not to damage it in any way and clean it out. Some transmissions can leave it needing cleaned out very badly. Don't forget to clean those magnets if you took the pan off. You will not get every last nit of metal off them but you can make them better than they were. Some vehicles have such horrible transmissions they need all the help they can get to last a long enough time.

  • I am getting ready to change the fluid in my 2017 Mazda 3 at 72K. I was really glad to find your video -- because Scotty Kilmer says to NEVER mix ATF and ALWAYS use the factory OEM fluid. I get the strong suspicion that he is just playing it safe -- because he caters to a lot of people that know nothing about cars -- and those people should NEVER try to select an alternative on their own,

    • @@AbrasiveJay It went fine for the first 3.5 quarts -- I could actually feel the transmission shift smoother & quicker -- but I thought it was perfectly fine before the change. I was only doing it for maintenance reasons & was surprised that I could feel an improvement. Soon I'll do it another 2 times, along with a filter change, and I should have pretty much 90% newish Amsoil.

    • @@geeder9086 Yea I got quoted on a rebuild for my 6l50 5500.00$ So next option would be a Service with my own fluid and a new transmission filter. putting amsoil in it but doing this leaves 3.4 quarts in the torque converter. Thus mixing 6 quarts of amsoil with OEM fluid. So I bought 12 quarts. wonder if the Service guy will do it twice just to try and flush the torque converter of the OEM Fluid. also looking into a Throttle Control Pedal Commander. I hate the Adaptive throttle lag.

      @AbrasiveJay@AbrasiveJayАй бұрын
    • @@AbrasiveJay Will he do it? Some won't because they don't want to get blamed if they think your trans may fail right after. Have you tried to reset the A/T programming with a relearn??? It's not as simple as disconnecting the battery -- that won't do anything to relearn the A/T.

So I agree that it should make sense to change it to full synthetic ATF fluid like Amsoil. But.........there are some master diagnostic Toyota technicians that don't like the idea of mixing. (Doing a drain and fill and having some Amoils and some factory). Some say stick to only OEM fluid for drain and fills. But do you think they are wrong and they can mix? (not foam, etc).

    • I had a 2017 Honda Pilot, the dealership told me the same thing. You can't mix other transmission fluid, only Honda ATF-DW1. They would tell me 3X drain & fill and every time I drain the fluid was brownish. After 108K miles, I decided to switch to Amsoil Fuel-efficient tranny fluid. Almost immediately, I notice a smoother shift. After 300 miles, I notice that I was getting more MPG, was average 20.9mpg before and 22.2mpg after Amsoil. After a month, I check the fluid and it was still pinkish, never with ATF-DW1. I am a believer of Amsoil product now!

  • I have a question about drain and fills since we're talking about mixing fluids. I just did one on my '15 Sonata 65k miles. Only 4qt in a 7.9 capacity. I want to get as much new fluid in as possible. So l was wondering if l can buy Maxlife ATF (it meets Hyundai SP-4M spec) two 1 gallon jugs. Drain and fill with both, then on the last fill use amsoil. Two jugs of maxlife is the price of one jug of amsoil. I fugure l can get an extra drain and fill ensuring newer fluid. My guess is by the third fill it would be half maxlife and half amsoil. Would that be a bad thing? Or should l just buy 2 jugs of amsoil and just settle for 2 drain and fills instead of 3?

    @lrncephil80@lrncephil803 жыл бұрын
    • Bad idea mixing amsoil atf with valvoline on 3rd drain and fill. Either use valvoline or amsoil, but not mixing. Amsoil atf cost more because it's a quality fluid, and quality comes with the cost. There is a reason why you choose sonata and not chevy Malibu or Ford fusion.

      @repairvehicle@repairvehicle3 жыл бұрын
    • @@repairvehicle that makes sense, I'll just stick to amsoil drain and fill.

    • @@repairvehicle I used valvoline max life atf in my old 98' f-150 just to get the old transmission fluid out at 60k, but it was 23 years old. Thankfully I can drop the pan, and I even have a drain bolt on my torque converter so I get nearly all the fluid out that way. Then I replaced about half of it with amsoil 2k miles later. It shifted better after the valvoline, but much better even after the amsoil, I use amsoil in all my vehicles. The next time I should have it all changed out with amsoil. Valvoline is a cheap way of getting old fluid out, and is not bad trans fluid. Better to have half valvoline new fluid with amsoil, than half old fluid and half amsoil. Remember that with drain and fills, you waste some new fluid after the first time. First drain may get 25% new. The next one is a 25/75 mix, so that 25% now affects only the 75% left, now when you drain and fill you get another 18.75% out. now you have about a 44% new/56% old. The next drain and fill only gets an additional 14% out. After 3 drain and fills, you have about 58% new/ 42% old. If you use the cheaper valvoline on the first couple of fills, you end up with much less old fluid in the car. Please correct my math if I am wrong.

      @neal8720@neal87202 жыл бұрын
    • @@neal8720 , when doing drain and fill there is no wasted fluid. Old fluid out new fluid in. When you drain fluid, you are removing only 1/4 of the fluid from the pan. 4 drain and 4 fill get you about 100% fluid replaced. Mixing Amsoil atf with Valvoline not good idea because you will never benefit 100% from Amsoil atf.
