  • Did a severe closet purge 4 years ago when we became full-time RVers. (It was actually a severe whole-house purge.) Resulted in wardrobe of probably 20 pieces (not including undergarments.) Biggest lesson I learned during those 4 years (an obvious one that I didn’t think of at the time and nobody seems to mention): The remaining clothes wear out SO much faster. Suggestion: If you have the space, tuck away those duplicates/2nd choice items. Then, when a piece in your closet is no longer wearable, “shop” these backup items first.

    @movingforwardLDTH@movingforwardLDTH2 жыл бұрын
    • If you have the space, YES! I also store things I like but haven’t worn much. When I need something “new” to wear, I look there first.

      @GrannyLinn@GrannyLinn2 жыл бұрын
    • This is where the vacuum bags are perfect. Just stash your back ups or duplicates in those. They are bug proof, waterproof, and take up a fraction of the space.

  • Why do people keep saying that having a small wardrobe somehow reduces the amount of laundry you have to do? You still wear the same number of pieces in a week that will have to be washed and you might actually end up doing laundry more often if you run out of clothes in some department before you've collected a full load. The only benefit I see concerning laundry is for people who don't have a lot of discipline and need to be forced to do their laundry regularly instead of letting it pile up for weeks.

    @inspiredby624@inspiredby6242 жыл бұрын
    • Agree wholeheartedly. This myth is my pet peeve. You can reduce laundry by wearing items such as jeans and outerwear more than once. But whether you have 7 outfits or 70 doesn’t change how much laundry you need to do overall! Thank you!

      @alexandraw3733@alexandraw37332 жыл бұрын
    • That’s funny. I was thinking the same thing. Even if I have more clothes, I can still only wear one outfit at a time.

      @aliciam6177@aliciam61772 жыл бұрын
    • I think what is meant here is that the pile of laundry can only get to a certain size.

      @happytofu5@happytofu52 жыл бұрын
    • This is advice helps the disorganized people like me and my family.. we often end up piling clothes on the floor or chairs because our closets and drawers were full. cant tell what is clean or not so I just wash everything again. Minimizing clothes gets rid of the overflow so it's easier to keep track of what's actually dirty.. or if I didnt feel like doing laundry, I wouldn't, for weeks. Then suddenly there's 20 loads to do. If I only have 30-50 pieces, I have to do laundry regularly and never end up with a giant mountain of laundry that takes 5 days to catch up on.

      @angelamyers4495@angelamyers44952 жыл бұрын
    • Because you cannot allow it to pile up for weeks. You are forced to wash it. It also reduces it because kids if they have a ton will throw tons in the laundry, but if they only have just enough they don’t throw random stuff in the laundry.

  • Hey, here’s my best tips for not feeling boring despite having a small color palette and wardrobe. - Pick one or two colors to spice up your neutrals. Example, if you wear mainly black and white, details in a bright primary color will go a long way such as bright red shoes or a yellow bag. Or, if you wear mainly warm muted neutrals you might want to spice things up with a pop of rust and peach. - Use the full range of shades. E.g instead of my palette being brown, cream, navy and pink it is: cacao brown, camel, cognac, ecru, navy, sky blue, peach and coral - I like monochrome outfits (not exclusively) so I keep a top, bottom (and sometimes over layer) in the same color BUT a different texture. - Figure out if warm or cool tones suit you best. Pro tip, if you love a color that does not match your undertone you can still wear it but not too close to your face. Say you are warm but love black, a color that tends to wash you out, a scarf in a color that suits you well will create a barrier. - Love patterns? Keep your patterns in the same category of clothing such as dresses, tops or trousers. That way you can still wear all your clothes interchangeable as you hopefully won’t wear two pairs of pants at the same time 😄 - Love bright color but hate neutrals? That’s okay, just stick to colors with the same undertone (warm or cool). Example, blue and fuccia pink works well together and so does green and purple. You can also, just like above, choose to keep your boldest colors or colors that doesn’t work well together in the same category such as dresses, tops or bottoms.

    • For me a winter wardrobe is just a summer wardrobe plus thick socks, long underwear/thermal layers, coats, hats, boots, and gloves. Plus extra layers as needed like flannels, hoodies, snow pants, etc. There’s a lot of stuff but somewhere in all that I’m still wearing the same pants and shirt that I would wear by themselves in the summer.

  • This may help the beginner.... I start every season by turning the clothes hangers backwards in my closet. Anything which is worn and washed hangs back up normally. At the end of the season, I can easily see everything which I didn't wear. These are the items which I don't hesitate to put in the donate pile. This has been a great help for me limiting my wardrobe. Plus I keep a little basket in my closet for items I know I want to donate throughout the season.

This way you can replace a ruined shirt with something from stored inventory from storage packed away. It’s not bogging down your closet, but you don’t need to go buy something new. So you aren’t wasting money later.

I would recommend using accessories like scarves, belts, jewelry, or shoes to make outfits trendy, rather than buying a few trendy pieces that will inevitably go out of style. I have a somewhat similar approach although I have winter & summer workwear & casual wardrobes, with some overlap. But I would like to pare things down further. Thanks for taking us through your process.

  • I always minimized my closet every year and I donated alot of my clothes. I started in September of 2019 to declutter my things but I had to stop because of COVID Stay at Home Order. It took me 1 year and 4 months to declutter my things which included donating a ton of my clothes, donating my few books that I had, and shredding my papers. I had no choice but to purge and declutter my clothes and papers to make room for my husband's clothes, papers and other things that he had. In my opinion, my husband is a hoarder and he doesn't like to donate things and shred his papers. I was so happy when my daughter told me "Mom you are now a minimalist." That comment my daughter gave me made me feel good. I have a colorful wardrobe. I don't shop alot for clothes like I used to. I buy clothing if I need it or need a staple like a white blouse. Your daughter is so adorable 💗💗

    • Shoes and boots…I’ve been purging them for a couple of years along with purses. My way: Shoes are a girl’s best friend, since I’m going to get new ones anyway periodically, first step was for every new pair, get rid of two pair. Worked for 1st year, now…for each new pair 5 pair have to go. Purses…keep only leather on first purge, then pick the ones you love, get rid of the rest. Clothes….attempt to wear every piece, put it on, wear if it fits and when you’re wearing it decide if it wears well or no. The no’s go. You’d be surprised how many things you will purge. Every day you are deciding and purging. Still have too many shoes and boots, kept only 3 leather purses, purged over 100 pairs of jeans, shirts and blouses purging daily. It’s a lot. Still have enough clothes to clothe half the town but it’s getting there and the local Christian donation group likes to see me drive up!😂

    • I sort of do that simply by determining a separate place to put everything I've worn. Then I don't let myself wear those clothes again - I work through my WHOLE closet until everything has moved. If I keep looking at something and I don't wear it, it goes into the 'donate' bag. I have not been specifically pushing the decluttering, but I have donated several bags and have only bought TWO things (plus undies) since covid began. I realized I simply don't need anything new for a while - I can 'shop' my closet.

  • my sister loves clothes and 2 years ago we culled her wardrobe together. we went through each category and subdivided by colour. white tshirts got limited to a couple of styles. one classic and one dressy. trousers got culled to the point where she could have both seasons on one shelf. I have 6 drawers and a bag of fancy clothes on a shelf and I feel like purging now. it is fun (for me at least).

  • Thank you for realistic ideas and that it's a journey🙂 i see all these small capsules wardrobes online, but i live in NC where we can easily have 32 as a low and 80 as a high right now . Easter Sunday can just easily be freezing or hot😂 i finally went with core wardrobe that's probably more spring and fall like, with basket of winter and basket of summer that gets swapped out. It is so much easier to dress and have less. Much less stress when have exactly what you need.

    • Yes it's so nice for the different season approach. Lol. I actually had to go back to my winter wardrobe a few days ago and pull out some clothes to wear. I'm obviously not pared down enough in general because my entire closet is now a huge mess. I have to live out of 3 different seasons, it seems. 37 degrees, then the next day it's 10 degrees and then it's 20 and raining. I would love to put my clothes out the night before but you never know what you're gonna get. 😅

  • I like the way you approached this wardrobe declutter. We definitely have need for separate categories as they relate to seasons, occasions , and stages of life. Something I have learned is to pick out my next day's clothing the night before to save the morning struggle (You can also have backup outfits hanging together if you are worried about last minute appointments or weather changes.) Also, the Olive sweater was a great keep.

That video really spoke to me by how realistic you were about setting goals and trying to make a change. you mentioned how much effort and time it takes to start a change like that. This really struck a cord with me because you denounced the “easy fix” that everyone tries to sell and instead made a realistic video about a heathy life style change. I really like this video too, because you mention how it’s taken you 4 years to have this mindset and make this change. So I just really appreciate your honesty and how you take into consideration many peoples circumstances. I just really love how you break things down for people who get overwhelmed by stuff like this (me), so thank you!

  • I really felt this was helpful and inspiring. I have a “uniform” and I love it. 3 nice dark jeans, 6 black T-shirts, 1 knitting jacket to have over on cold days, 2 sets of work out clothes (as I work out 4 times a week), one fancy dress clothes and that’s it. I wear uniform at work, so this is more than enough for me. I love color and I have some that I think I look really good in, but I never ended up wearing them. So I just stopped buying clothes with colors. I don’t really have any summer clothes, as we only have summer for two weeks at the most. The wind almost always makes it to cold for other things. And we never really have bad winter many weeks of the year ether. But I need to get some new clothes now as the old ones wear out and I am becoming a little skinnier, and this was very helpful!

  • I finally found the good mid-way of number of clothes for me. I tried to be very minimal (like you) and I got bored with always wearing the same clothes. Having heaps of clothes, like I did in the past, also wasn't good. Now I have a well-kept wardrobe that is tidy, easy to look over and stil has enough variety for my taste. I definitely try to have "one of each" of items so as not to go overboard. My 8 year old starts to really think about how to curate her wardrobe and not have an excess of clothes as well and I admire her for that. And I admire you too for managing to live this way. 🙌

  • I know a lot of times creators like you sort of go over the same things multiple times when it comes to decluttering but it's actually SO helpful and inspirational to people like me to see that even those who are more on top of things have to revisit and declutter again and again. It helps me not feel like I'm failng. Instead it's just a thing we all have to go through. But as you said, the more you do it the easier it gets to pick up an item and instantly know if you really value it enough to keep it. Sort of like building your organizing muscles!

  • Yes different seasons of life require such different things! I love how thoughtful you were about this process. It really does take many months potentially to peel back the layers of onion that are our wardrobes. Now my kids are in higher school/ college and I returned to work. But only have to be in the office 2 days a week. So I need some office clothes and then fun work from home/ run errand clothes and then date night clothes! I used to be a barre instructor and had a TON of workout clothes. Now I have three sets- that’s it!Know your categories and the percentage of time each of these categories! It really helps the de clutter process. I also had my colours done and weeded out a LOT of black because it makes me looked washed out. Wish I’d had my colours done years ago!❤

That for me is the missing piece. I’m almost afraid to count the items I have, and can’t wait to trim down the number. Closet and storage space is limited, so making categories will make the purge so much easier and sensible. Thanks for this inspiration.
