Satellites - few inventions have impacted our lives like them. Born as a product of the Cold War arms race and of surveillance and spy craft. From their early beginnings they’ve changed the way we talk with each other, share information, observe and predict changes in the natural world. Satellites have changed the way we view our place in the universe, and also the way we see ourselves on earth.

  • Arthur C. Clarke, an engineer and science fiction writer, first proposed communication satellites back in the early 1950s predicting that they would change everything whether it was science or culture. While the Russian sputnik was just a radio transmitter, America sent a scientific satellite that they had been developing for months prior to sputnik, into orbit. This set the pattern for America; taken one step at a time, while Russia disregarded safety and science for one-up-man-ship. Eventually America achieved their goals way ahead of everyone else.

  • It took billions of dollars and decades of immense national scientific effort during the Cold War for mankind to finally achieve its most ridiculous goal: turning American millionaires into living satellites capable of farting in space. The first selfie of a fart taken in orbit and posted in real time on Facebook will be a big step towards diminishing the dignity of our entire species. 😂😂😂😂
