The never-before-seen moment a leopard found an active lion den and sprinted off with a lion cub!
Send in your wildlife video here, and earn money: www.latestsightings.com/partn...
This once-in-a-lifetime video was filmed by Canadian lawyer Scott Hyman (54) - @scotthymanphoto on Instagram in Ruaha National Park.
In one image, a 160-pound leopard can be seen up a tree carrying a visibly frightened three-week-old lion cub in its mouth.
Hyman used a Fuji XT-3 camera to click these amazing pictures from 10-15 meters away.
Scott tells the story: "During my safari, I came across a male adult leopard on the road and started following it for well over an hour as it meandered until it suddenly stopped," said Hyman.
"The leopard suddenly leaped into the dense brush and seconds later sprang out with a lion cub in its maw.
"It sprinted down the road, cub squirming, and up a nearby tree around the bend by the side of the road.
"It held the lion cub firmly in its jaws, and bit into the cub’s skull, ending the cub’s life, and proceeded to devour it piece by piece, headfirst, gradually working its way down the carcass.
"The leopard dropped one of the tiny legs as it ate, but continued devouring the lion cub, bones and all."
Leopards are opportunistic feeders, they eat a variety of animals and usually hunt on the ground or in trees.
They are climbers, leopards spend most of the daytime hours resting under sheltered rocks or in shady places among tree branches.
"At first I was shocked by what I saw, but quickly accepted it as part of nature," says Hyman.
"While my heart broke for the cub, I was excited and thrilled to have witnessed such a rare event, a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife viewing."

There’s just something about seeing big cats die that makes it really sad. However if the lions get that chance they can and will do the same thing to a leopard cub or an adult leopard and leave the Cubs defenseless. The leopard did what was strategically necessary for its own survival.
That leopard saved thousands of future lives by eating that evil Lion cub which was to be growing up to be a mass murderer !
Hey John - totally agree. If given the chance, lions do the same and worse! Sometimes, lions kill the adults, the young and leave the remains there for the flyers / maggots to eat. At least the leopard ate part of the kill so, the death of the cub was not a total waste; some of it was for food. VERY different for lions that kill and leave the remains indiscriminately.

No
No, because the Leopard would not have been close to it in the first place. Leopards are resourceful, adaptable and intelligent unlike Lions. In order to survive from Lions, Hyenas and other predators they evolved mentally, an example: the fact that they live in trees and are stealth masters. Lions and Hyenas can't climb tall trees and are not that stealthy. If the Lioness was not far away it would have never got there. If you want to see it in a human emotional prespective. Yeah it is sad but at least it ate the cub. Lions kill Leopard and Cheetah cubs in order to protect their territory but how is a cub that will travel away to find territory for itself in a year or so threatening? Scientifically, the Leopard eliminated a future threat and fed itself, that's how smart they are. There are countless videos showing Lions throwing around Leopard cubs like balls but only a few of Leopards killing Lion cubs instantly without making the little one suffer.
Leopards are my favorite but this kill messed with me a bit.

Lions have nearly an impossible time trying to kill fully grown healthy leopards (unlike how easily they kill adult hyenas; leopards just have too many survival methods & weapons), so lions will kill a leopard cub in a second, even if they (often) don't eat it. But this happens all the time with lion cubs; just not on camera; lion cubs (like other species) have a low survival rate. Lion cubs get killed (if found) by pythons, hyenas, male lion takeovers, leopards, wild dogs, as other predators alike. It's good to catch it on film. And leopards, (unlike lions), don't let fresh meat go to waste. Leopards eat virtually anything fresh. The only exception is, maybe other leopards. Although I have seen a mother leopard eat her cub that was killed by a python. Lions are more finicky; for instance, they are not partial to hyena meat & other cat predator meat (of cats they kill). But lions seem to be willing to scavenge on meat that is less fresh, than what leopards are will to tolerate; leopards, from my observation, seems to have shorter expiration date for the freshness of its food. Conversely, I hypothesize that hyenas don't have taste buds at all, as they seem to eat carcasses regardless of taste and lack of freshness.
I remember in an old documentary a leopard also carried a wild dog into a tree and ate it while its pack cried on the ground
No lions don't find it almost impossible to kill leopards, lions can kill them in seconds if they really wanted to, male lions in particular go straight in and will go for the throat even while being bitten and clawed, a hyena is far harder to kill than a leopard.
@Animal fights a male lion doesn't fear any injuries. It goes right in and finishes the job
