    • @@simonkevnorris The problem with that one was it wasn't actually that impressive; if they'd told Claudia and Jon they were allowing exponents I'm 100% sure that both of them would have come up with the same thing Richard did. They're both very good at math. Both of them were able to determine well within the 30 seconds that the problem was impossible under the rules which was just as impressive.

    • Marko Todorovic to be fair, countdown maths is a lot different to anything you’d teach in a classroom. There isn’t really any way to “teach” someone how to solve countdown problems, you just have to be good at seeing the solutions.

    • Nice! I did it the long way, 9 and 1, 10. Then times that by 50 to get your 500, then use the 10 and the other 9 to times them to get your 90, then take that off the 500 and youve got yourself 410

  • That last maths question had me squirming because everyone seemed to be missing it until Paul gave the 500-90 method. Another solution would have been (9-1)*50+10. 9-1 = 8, 8*50=400, 400+10=410.
