    • @light279 in comparison to just about most other players especially in the mid to late 2000s she was considered a "offensive counter puncher" and her serve wasn't that much more powerful compared to her peers of similar height and stature, also if we are honest the hype of "Big Babe Tennis" really lowered the standards of genuine power in the WTA

    • Still in defeat she showed the start of what modern tennis would be, what would lead to the likes of Halep,Kerber, Swiatek and Stephens, the heavy yet powerful strokes dragging SW off court more than the "Big Babe" tennis she had mastered and was accustomed to face from the likes of VW,Sharapova,Davenport. Also variety to disrupt and speed to defend. SW had to alter her game in order to become the all time great, its ashame she wants to back out on her desires for WTA Majors to be best 5 match

The likes of Williams Sisters, Sharapova used offensive shots when they are defending, just too much risk taking. I dont understand why the women's game rarely used slice unless its necessary. I've seen Venus slices couple of times and its beautiful, such a shame she never utilize it. Its time somebody starts telling female players to start utilizing slices

    • I think I remember Serena saying that before the Australian Open 2010 final against Henin, she had her coach hit countless slices so she'd know how to handle them. I actually think it was around this time that Serena started coming up with more strategies against opponents, whereas in the past she used to just go out there and blast away (because she could). Her game matured around 2010, and especially when she brought Mouratoglou on board.

As soon as Seles and Hingis came along, her game was irrelevant. She retired at the right time. Her game wouldn't have aged well

    • @norman smithers Steffi couldn't be an in-form Monica Seles, who overpowered her time and time again before the stabbing, even at Roland Garros. Steffi beat a 17 year old Serena, big deal. But we all know she couldn't beat prime Serena on any surface. That slice backhand extent because it just doesn't work in the power tennis era. The only reason it worked for Justine Henin is because she could hit over her backhand and drive through it. The all time great that I think would give Serena a better challenge is probably Chris Evert with modern technology. She'd be almost like a Wozniacki and grind Serena down, especially on clay.

So no, sorry but something like "Monica overpowering Steffi" has never ever existed. P.S. I'm not a Graf fan at all, I actually hated her at the time because I was a Sabatini fan, but I also remember very well what really was happening back then. Seles re-entered competitions playing like a total monster, but by that time, Graf had changed her racquet, had further developed her game and was just completely out of reach, period.

    • I always felt Henin just didn't have anything left in the tank against Bartoli after that Serena quarterfinal. Henin was frail in so many ways, and I think when she had tough matches she'd come out flat. Hard to say though, as that first set against Bartoli was pure tennis.

I also think in Grand Slams where she fell short (Aus '06 and '10, US Open '06) a lot of it had to do with tough 3 setters she played prior to the final. It could all be in my head though.

  • Henin was Serena’s best rival IMO. They had some amazing matches. Henin was the only one of Serena’s contemporaries who could go toe-to-toe with Serena in terms of power. Serena made a nice adjustment in the second and third sets hitting high loopy balls to Henin’s backhand. Serena probably saw how Nadal tortured Federer with the same tactic. Haha
