As someone who lives in a country where we don't have guns, I'm glad our children don't have to be traumatised so that people can 'protect'tl themselves. I admire your cannabis laws but I'm concerned by your gun culture
This is horrific. And completely bizarre. Living in NZ I have never had to worry about my kids being shot at school. I can't imagine how terrifying the whole thing must be for children, teachers and parents.

I literally had an escape plan in my head at all times. I didn’t want to be a sitting duck if something were to happen. I thankfully graduated from high school in 2016 without any incidents happening at my school. It was a bit scary during the drills because the administrators would come and bang on the doors to make it more realistic. We knew it was a drill, but it was still unsettling.
But there was that New Zealand shooter a few years back. It could happen anywhere.

The Barcelona school my children attended did a drill without notice to parents that absolutely traumatized my then kindergartener. Then they complained to me that for weeks afterward he was trying to climb the fences that gate in the playground - because they'd made him feel uncertain and unsafe - he was trying to be prepared to escape. Spain doesn't even have America's gun problem.
Other than making our kids live in a war zone rather than get serious about confronting our gun problem?

My parents kept a newspaper photo of me as a kid crying hysterically after participating in a fire evacuation simulation at the state fair and I'm now a well adjusted adult....mostly.
With the US thanksgiving approaching I'll just say how thankful I am to not be living in such an insane country.
There was a particularly bad accident that nearly resulted in a death at my old school a while ago. This happened shortly after the shooting where police waited for hours to storm the building, so the 7/11 gets robbed for the 3rd time that year and by proxy the school goes on lockdown and sends a VERY vague email to both parents and teachers. This lead to a parent armed with a gun trying to break into the school, I still remember being crowded in the locker room, watching as students cry and call their parents and the teachers trying to do their best to maintain order. Due to the noticeable fear the teachers were displaying student became louder, which only served to increase fear once the teachers couldn’t keep the kids quiet. I just sort of zoned out and though to myself well I guess this may be where I die. Somehow the gunman was peacefully apprehended and the police didn’t shoot on sight, he ended up doing community service and the school just pretended it never happened
The purpose of a routine drill is so that it becomes 2nd nature in the event of emergency. If there are schools that are simulating realistic events of this nature, this would be a problem. A realistic event simulation with children involved is a horrible idea & counterproductive. Generally speaking - When one knows what to do in the event of emergency, they are less inclined to panic & shut down during an event as well as remain abnormally fearful of a future event that may or may not happen. Knowing what to do is empowering & life saving.
what ca be wrong with such drills for kids in a culture of violence? Perhaps change the culture through education?!

We go on soft lockdowns frequently when the local bear shows up.
They did the same thing in the cold war times for air raids. But they told the kids they would survive under their wooden desks from an atomic bomb remember. Nothing that we are going through today is original we went through it in some other form before. Kids were terrified in school during the cold wars. And it looks like we plan to keep that tradition
You're right that nothing is original; in other countries arguably at even higher risk of nuclear attack than the US during the Cold War, we didn't do performative "duck & cover" drills in schools. There's something very US-specific about this kind of drill in schools.
In a real lockdown no one is calmly sitting in the corner one of the most scared times I've ever been was when we had a lockdown drill in elementary except they didn't say it was a lockdown until it was over if they say before hand no one takes it seriously say afterwards everyone's traumatised but again they're pointless in a real event no one is grouping up in the corner
Our teacher told us if the shooter is reported in an area away from ours that we should dash out the exit and to the generator shack in the woods.
The students at my school don't even actually do the drills anymore because we've had so many fake ones.. the way some schools do them is terrifying.

Last Friday at my school, we had a lockdown drill. There were 2 people laughing, so what does my teacher do? Give the entire class a detention, of course! We get to serve it next Monday

What came to my mind is the following; Analogously, war can happen. If you put every resource into preemptively preparing for war, you will crush it when the war actually happens, but you 'waste' so much utility by responding inadequately. On the other hand, if you are not prepared for war at all, the outcome would be atrocious when it actually happens. On that note, let's analyze what was introduced. 1. How much utility do you gain from the drill? It should depend on the probability of happening and the probability of getting physically inflicted given the incident actually happened. 2. What is the cost? Some are psychological, fiscal, and even political. I suspect kids' political alignment can be influenced by telling how often about gun violence. If you tell gun violence 24/7, it would be different from saying no outside news at all. 3. I feel the frequency of the lockdown drills is more influenced by the state's political alignment rather than the actual utility of the drill.,, But passing a bill limiting the global amounts of drills seriously undermines the complexity of issues.

We had a threat and brought in metal detectors on the first day of school during my second year of high school.

I would argue that students who plan to commit such atrocity might familiarise themselves with the lock down procedures and find ways to exploit it especially if a student at the school and also bunching the students together seems more of hinderince. I understand the doors are locked and room secure and im no expert this is just my opinion.
Bomb drills in the '50's, fire drills ongoing since then. What's the issue? Knowledge is power. Maybe those complaining of traumatized children need to be raising more resilient children instead of coddling them. This unfortunately is a fact of life in America. Count my blessings I don't live there daily, despite living 10 minutes away.
My question is whether or not the techniques actually work. Everyone knows them. The people who commit the crimes have often been a part of those drills themselves and know the procedures. What is to stop a gunman from shooting the lock of the door and entering a room they know has people inside? People who are all usually huddled into a corner with no way out? It’s insane that our best defense is such a maneuver instead of legislation and cultural reform.

I spend my entire k-12 school with these drills. I just got used to them they were just like a fire drill for me. It was not just lock down but really hide, run, fight.

A lock down drill is for prisoners; you criminals are lockdowned because you are being punished. And is training a victim mentality - you are going to be killed in this school. Lockdowns also put many targets, prey into one small space, making it easy for the predator, as they know the lockdown will coral their victims.
In China 🇨🇳, violent crimes are usually committed by the state, not individuals. Victims of violence are by the thousands. - Examples are: Tibetans in Tibet, Uyghurs in Xinjiang, and Tiananmen Square.

So now switching lights off can cause children trauma? It's really pathetic how weak and unready for life you're making your kids, fearing even slightest stress for them. How they suppose to grow up if you preventing any troubles altogether? This overcaring situation in developed countries really should stop, outside of creating weak people it's also discouraging people from having kids in the first place, because they think there's too much responsibility.

The trauma of lockdown procedure drills is not isolated. Parents and kids in USA live with knowledge that, apparently, more kids die in shootings than by disease or accidents. The Americans have a gun culture, much of it irrational, that they cannot dispel.
That’s blatantly false. FBI data shows car accidents are WAY higher than gun violence. Most gun related deaths of children are parent or gang related.

The kids shouldn’t know what the drill is for. The teachers could turn the drills into a game. Not knowing the purpose of the drill doesn’t have to change its effectiveness.
