On the Breadline: The harrowing stories of Londoner's facing the cost of living crisis

For those on the breadline - this Christmas will be a harrowing time of rising food prices, escalating fuel costs and little thought about what’s under the tree.
The Evening Standard and our sister paper the Independent, are joining forces with Comic Relief, to raise as much as we can to help those struggling.
Money raised will go to organisations in London and across the UK that are working to help people on the breadline cope with the cost of living crisis.

    • I ask myself the same question. Where are the fathers? Apparently universal credit absolves men of their responsibility to support their children. The system in the United States isn’t perfect but they make an attempt at making the fathers responsible for their children’s support.

The organisation responsible for me becoming homeless despite the fact that I was taking care of two of my children 5 out of seven days andthe CSA was taking money from me to pay her for the privilege of me doing so. The organisation who told the Citizens Advice people "We do not process claims made by fathers" . The organisation that told me personally if I become homeless the children will have to go back to their mother which was against their wishes. £49.00 pw is all I had to raise my children on, food, clothes, bus fare to school and utility bills. The organisation responsible for the deaths of fathers harassed for large sums of money despite those fathers not being absent from their childs lives. The CSA, the organisation that targeted the innocent to compensate for the feckless.

As for incompetence... What sort of representative of an organisation tells a man if monies aren't paid within a specified time period of time, it can, as forfeit until such monies are forwarded, confiscate driving licences and passports? That's was a threat to a man's livelihood surely, particularly if he drives for a living?

    • @@markohenry5891 The real problem behind any of our social issues is that the 'political will' is to shift the responsibility of any given issue on to other bodies. That's how the government always seems to absolve itself of any wrong doing or guilt. • I never give money to these scammers. Very little reaches those who need help. It's a big marketing scam to enable only a few who benefit! Same with many big charities now. I give to grassroots level charities who are actually hands on helping and supporting people. Manchester has quite a few smaller hands on charities, and donations go where they are meant to go, and directors and volunteers work tirelessly. I would advise anyone to give to your local charities such as these, otherwise you are just throwing your cash at some vague large operation, and a large percentage won't even go to where you intended it to go!!

Becoming disabled can happen to anyone , As for the mothers some may be working but in poorly paid work and unable to get better paid jobs due to child care or lack of education. A large number of people in work have to live on UC so big corporations can make vast profits while the tax payer pays the workers. As for energy companies again making vast profits while those on a small budget struggle to live , Food prices are going through the roof and that's the basic food stuff , We have people who are highly qualified turning to food banks as the mortgages, energy prices, food, petrol , rents eats their wages , All the while those at the top make more money some at the expense of the poor . • It's really irritating that when interviews are conducted with women that others assume they are single parents or if they are single parents often quote, "Where are the fathers? Why can't they help?" There are numerous reasons why fathers are not contributing towards the upbringing of their children. 1. They could be disabled and not able to work. 2. They could be unaware they have any children (some women choose not to tell them for various reasons). 3. They could be in prison. 4. They could be violent and the mothers don't want anything to do with them because it could cause more problems down the line. 5. The fathers may have died. 6. They could have a job that doesn't pay enough for the basics and there is nothing left over to financially support the children. 7. Some mothers don't even know who the father is to inform them I.e. Some children resulting from sexual assault don't always know their attacker. NOT ALL SINGLE PARENTS are freeloaders trying to milk the benefits system and many of them do work but childcare costs is a big outlay from their wages along with food, rent, energy costs, clothing and footwear. Granted there are some dads who choose not to contribute and refuse to pay for their children's upbringing because of the attitudes of 1. "How do we know the money will actually be spent on the children?" 2. "What's the point when I'm not allowed to see my kids?" 3. "I told the mother to get rid and she didn't listen. So it's not my problem it's hers!" There are many reasons for single parents and there are many single parent dads who are struggling out there too. However, most news media tends to focus more on single mums.

They were willing to be on the program so lets have the full story. In fact for many of the cases you describe it makes the story even worse and in those cases of course the government need to step in. But two people made a commitment to have children and should be raising them, not the government. You are irritated at peoples response because these programs are not telling the full story.
