@@Hawxxy Lol this has nothing to do with racism, you support players from your country, and sometimes it's too extreme, it's part of the sport. Look at british people in Football or in Formula 1 recently, it doesn't matter if you're french, brit or from anywhere else.

This has been dethroned as Monfils' craziest win ever. RG 2023, Round 1 vs Baez. 5th set Gael was serving at 0-4 and Baez was 1 point away from going up 5-0. Gael somehow pulled off the win 7-5 in the 5th. He had to withdraw from his 2R with a wrist problem but still made a really nice memory on Chatrier for himself and the crowd and all his fans around the world who were lucky enough to witness that crazy fifth set if not the whole match. Amazing stuff.

Loved this video! Pablo Cuevas is actually a real crowd pleaser too, often tries crazy shots. But here he just was the opponent. Bad luck for him this turned into a Davis Cup match, although the French crowd didn't seem unsportsmanlike to me.
As a french guy, named Gaël too (yes, that's my name !), I had gooze bump earing "La Marseillaise" from the crowd ! (and a little tear drop...) I didn't remember this match, so thank you so much for this video :)

I laughed when I saw the earthquake title because it is so true!! I saw this game and l was hoarse from screaming Allez Gael!! Tennis is a momentum game and its so hard to keep your momentum going. This is why l admire tennis players a lot. This is also why this channel deserves all the credit it gets. You highlight players and those games that really, truly deserve an encore. Earthquake? It's really great to hear the crowd get so in to this match and it was an awesome come back. However I feel a little sorry for the other player. It would have been hard to stay focused with the crowd exploding every time you make a mistake.

It's not all "showboating. I consider Monfils to be one of tennis' greatest athletes. His speed, his vertical jump, his reach, his coverage, his ability to recover from diving after a ball. He may not have won a Master's of slam but, I've seen footage of ATP events won. and He ALWAYS wins the crowd.
When a french player is playing at Roland, everything can happen. His last match against Baze in 2023 was one of the biggest come back ever seen

Monfils plays for the crowd, he doesn't focus on actually winning matches.
That's a good point (read: sarcasm). He loves to lose and his opponents have no say in the outcome. Yes, he entertains, and that's part of the business, but that guy wants to win, too, it's just that his opponents have something to say about it. His type of play doesn't lend itself to beating the Nadals, Federers, and djoko's of the world. But he probably got more out of his game style than maybe it deserved. $19+ million in prize money means he won, A LOT.
@@dougtennis5147 The only thing that prevented him from being great is his mental side of the game and of course he is a bit of a slacker compared to the big 3 otherwise he has the skill and athletism that could hve made him a formidable force. I remember he was leading by 2 sets to 0 and had 2 match points on Roger Federer in the 2014 US open quarter final . He lost both and went on to get broken in his service game , mentally crashed after that not to recover again till Federer won the Match. The crowd was rooting for Federer as usual no matter how many trick shots Gael came up with . Players who got it mentally win whether the crowd is for them or not plus Monfils lacks that killer instinct or that competitive spirit at a higher level . He always seemed to be content with where he is at and he would spend more time entertaining (even on crucial points or games) rather than competing . The Big three have that big ego that makes them push for the summit no matter what it takes coz they want to be the greatest.
@@moxide There's no doubt about the egos of the big 3, and over the years monfils' initial ferocity seemed to have morphed from scowls to smiles. But after being involved in tennis as long as I have and understanding that it's not just about you and your mentality, but the fact that there's an opponent on the other side of the net attempting to impose their own game and purposely trying to keep you from playing your best, who have better skills (as with the big 3 over monfils, who often pushes the ball and only pulls the trigger when he is 100% comfortable), there's so much more to it than just one particular area. Monfils made it to the top of Everest as far as I'm concerned. You say the only thing that" prevented him from being great..." I ask you, in what field of endeavor, where you reach the TOP 10 of everyone on the entire face of the earth, a population of over 7 billion with 87 million participating in your field (the actual number of world wide tennis players) are you not great? I just don't understand, probably because I worked in the game and saw everyday juniors who worked extremely hard who couldn't achieve beyond regional competition, much less have any chance of playing top tier D1 or low level pro. I've also known players on the D1, Futures, Challenger, and ATP with world rankings (I'm not bragging about this, only saying I've been around and known people who compete at these levels), and what Monfils has been able to achieve is nothing short of a miracle. You have a better chance of being struck by lightning on a perfectly blue sky day than to get where he's been. If Monfils isn't great, no one is.
@@dougtennis5147 I am not going to argue for the sake of arguing , you made some very good points here and you put it in a perspective that i had not envisioned. I am sure you understand where i am coming from though , if you rooted for the guy like i once did then you understand how frustrating it can be to be backing him because it felt like he could do greater things if he took the game a lil bit more seriously but you are right character and hunger is something that you cannot teach maybe the big three are just savages when it comes to how they approach the game something that is hard to follow.
@@moxide You make strong points, too, but I don't really know what his work ethic is to be able to comment that this is why he doesn't win. I often wondered watching him that he would get quite winded (compared to his opponents in the same rally) and thought he was using the tournaments to get his fitness rather than putting in the work. And you're right about commitment at that level, if he's lacking in it at all, the other guys who are fully committed (like the big 3 and Tsitipas, Medvedev, etc.) will just pass him by which they have and he is getting by on past work and talent/athleticism. I guess I was in the business too long and saw the miracles it took to play even in the top 200. Monfils' 20 year career mostly in the top 20, or at the least in the top 50, I cannot begin to fathom, and even the most talented don't get there without an incredible amount of work that led to it. (Even Kyrgios worked a lot harder at tennis then he would admit, especially in the formative years.) I've only known personally one guy who was ranked in the top 20 singles, and he played in the 80's and 90's. He lived, breathed and drank tennis...and if you knew who he was he would be called a journeyman and sometimes a giant killer, but as with Monfils, never great. If the guy I knew and monfils weren't great, then everyone else I know who play are just pond scum. Just a difference in perspective and you have every right to your opinions.

I remember as a wildcard in 2013 Monfils won great matches against Berdych and Gulbis and the crowd went nuts. In 2011 he beat Ferrer 8-6 in the 5th. 2014, beats the cult hero Fognini in the 5th. Dude has made a career of insane matches at the French.

tennis matches usually has these sounds - grunt, tock-tock-... tock..grunt-tock......and claps. The same thing repeats for the entire match - a grunt as they put extra effort into each hit, then the sound of ball hitting the racket mixed with some grunts and then audience claps, umpire announces score... but here, its foot ball time, shouting yelling, clapping, singing , of course the grunts and other sounds mix the air.
Its a shame Gael never won a grand Slam, the same can be said for Tsonga..can almost compare this to the great football team of Brazil 1982 and 86 playing wonders but no trophy award

In tennis, if they want, people can support a player, but the way a soccer match is played, it should be prohibited. The reason is the following, tennis is an individual sport (doubles is a totally secondary extra), if people or whatever disturbs the player's concentration, this game has no meaning.

Dommage qu'il soit si inconstant, capable du meilleur comme du pire, car il aurait pu gagner un RG, ou au moins un master 1000, sinon plusieurs. Il dépense trop d'énergie perdue entre les points victorieux et ne tient pas la distance. Est-ce que quelqu'un lui a déjà expliqué cela ?.
