The man who didn’t get any respect was one of the most respected comedians ever. May he rest in peace.
And one of the best divers, apparently.
The triple lindy ranks right up there with Al Bundy scoring 4 touchdowns for Polk High school. 2 legends in their own minds.
Now strike the pose.
"...in their on minds." Own? Idiot.
At least it's actually possible to make four touchdowns in football. It has been done in reality
Their ON minds?
@@trwentSo true, I love this movie and who doesn't love Hard luck Al Bundy.😅😂😅
That close up of Dangerfield's face after he hits the first diving board had me laughing so hard I fell off the couch!
no one had better comic expression then Rodney.
thats was my desktop background for nearly a year
Always helps to do a few arm pit farts before attempting such a daring feat.🤣🤣
This video documents the highest attendance and most enthusiastic audience ever at a college diving competition.
It's the biggest sport at Grand Lakes University.
I laugh at the idea of a diver/swimmer being considered a "big man on campus".
@@scottfalconer1426 I guess it is one sport an old guy can plausibly compete in. Or "most plausibly".
@@scottfalconer1426 Have you seen those guys irl? They are shredded. Divers at FSU had the best girls.
When you have Lemmon doing a triple Lindy you better have the largest audience
RIP Rodney, dude was comedic gold.
I saw him at the Greek in L.A...he was so funny you wanted him to stop because you were still laughing at the joke he told 3 jokes ago.......NOT UNLIKE Sam Kenneson............
agreed! I laugh my ass off every time I watch this scene. Love the armpit farts.
@@MrMarkmurray0712 Then he checks the wind. LOL
@@mortsnerd5100 It was so funny! I miss him so much. I also loved him in Caddyshack and Easy Money.
@@MrMarkmurray0712 "You must've been somethin' before electricity." 😂
In this scene, the laws of physics and probability got no respect.
No respect at all.
But they didn't mind.
When I was at the Air Force Academy, one of the water polo players, inspired by this scene, decided to attempt the Double Lindy, going from the 5m to the 3m. It was almost a total disaster, he came less than an inch from smacking the pool deck. Dude was nuts, and ended up having a full career in special ops. Still unbelievable that he even tried it.
Just respect the Hand Fart. Yoda.
Just respect the Hand Armpit Fart. Yoda
I'm glad this was caught on tape or i'd never believe it happend!
We need your help now... Pls Save the world
haha
Not bad
Oh it happened
Actually it didn’t happen as one continuous dive, and it wasn’t Dangerfield doing it. Movie magic. All the closeups are Rodney and all the shots from a distance are a body double stunt man. If you look close at the distance shots you can see its not his face or hair. It’s a technique they use in every tv action show & every action movie. When they show the star actor begin a complex fight , you see the actor , then as the technical and dangerous parts happen a stunt nan or woman does the actual stunt, you never see their face, then they cut in the actor falling down or finishing the move and your eye is tricked because you expect to see the star doing all of it. The stunt double is chosen to exactly have the same body type as the star, and often the same basic face shape. They do this for 2 reasons : first, the incredible stunts, fight moves, flips , leaps etc are far beyond the stars capability, and second the insurance company for the set will never allow the star to do stunts or they’d refuse to cover the movie shoot. If a star is injured it’s nightmare if they’re injured. Only a very very few stars are allowed to do limited stunts on their own. In one of the Mission Impossible movies, Tom Cruz demanded to do the jump from Building to building on a rope. He was not on top of a building. They used computer replacement. He was in a studio with a net under him. But he did swing 25 feet from the fake wall to another fake wall, but missed the spot he was supposed to hit and broke his foot. the shot was used in the film because it looked fine. He talked about it in a tv interview and showed the clip, laughing and saying “yup right there, bam, busted my foot! 😂 which is exactly why stars are not allowed to do any stunts. Rare Exception: In the Matrix Keanu Reeves actually did some complex fighting sequences because he’s an expert in martial arts, but usually no, and certainly not Dangerfield who was old and out of shape and couldn’t dive at all! Still excellent and hilarious.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the editing that went into this shot. Love 80's movies!
Best line from the movie. "Suppose we go out to dinner sometime when you have no class?"
I really liked "You kidding? The shape I'm in, you could donate my body to science fiction!"

This by far is the most rarest, difficult, dangerous, magnificent, amazing dives I have ever seen in my entire life. And it can only be done this man. What a great act he was.
@@gilson1982 No he really performed this himself. :)
I love how almost all social issues in 1980's movies could be solved with a physically impossible feat of strength
Napoleon Dynamite dance.
And in the 2020's we are completely invested in creating social issues even if they don't really exist.
@@sammadison1172 yeah like CRT… what a made up joke
Or in Thornton Melon's case, skill.😜
That's what they Said about many issues in the 80's too
This was filmed when Rodney Dangerfield was 65. He lived forever and still lives on in our hearts. ❤
This is the greatest sports achievement that has ever happened!!!
You're DEFINITELY right this 😎👉0:52 was a GREAT achievement...
The dive, or the armpit farts???
not sure how i landed here today but YEP!!!
The armpit farts made me laugh when as a kid. And you know what? They still make me laugh today.
Me too! I used to be able to armpit fart like a champ when I was younger. It brought lots of laughs, obviously. :-)
me too I'm 17 i can armpit fart mine self
gutz1981 same
gutz1981 haha was random and funny
It actually made me sad. For 60 years, I have tried to armpit fart. Nothing. I just look like a wounded pigeon heading for a Cuisinart. When my son was 3 years old I told him how frustrated I was trying to make armpit farts. He tried it. Nothing. He tried again. BRAAAAAAP! The butthead.
I'll never get tired of the "bug-eyed" expressions Rodney used to make! Still funny!!!
Yeah, Rodney 'I just had a big diet coke' Dangerfield, much loved anyway
The kid early in the film playing him in his youth had him down perfect too. :)
What a cast this movie had. One of the greatest comedies of all time.
It sucked, r e t a r d
I'm setting here watching the Olympic diving trials with my wife & just had to show her the Triple Lindy--the best dive EVER!
Lol! Nine years later I’m watching Olympic diving in Tokyo and just had to see the Triple Lindy! 🤣
Showed her some REAL diving !!
Still to this day, the most amazing dive I’ve ever seen! Even after watching the 2020 Olympics.
The stunt diving was done by Greg Loughanis, who's actually considered by many to be the best diver in the world! He also had a dog named Woof Blitzer which is amazing
Damn I miss Rodney-he was a true comedian. Epic movie!
Watched this many times if just to see his greatest line in this movie. He was taking his economics final. The teacher asked him a question with 32 parts. After deep thought and having stayed up all night eating instant coffee, he answers, "4?"
As always Dangerfield performed his own stunts. For the movie he trained to be a diver and after much practice he performed this dive in one take. What a great actor.
Best line for me from this classic is when Rodney's driver asks how is wife is doing early on in the movie. He says," She gives good headache." I've used that line a number of times throughout the years and I always get a laugh from it. Always tell them it's a Dangerfield joke.
"That dive nearly killed me."
Rodney actually worked as a diving acrobat. Incredible.
I was there that day. That dive was incredible.
Details please!!!!!😮
@@kat35lulu88 my description of the dive can only do disservice to the memory of Thornton Melon who is really the Greg Louganis of big and tall retailing and a consummate party animal.
What's a party without Bubbles????
You passed! All D's and an A! That's how I got through High School. Good ol' History; always good for an A.
Rodney Dangerfield was the first ever to complete the Triple Lindy. Prior to that, out of six who attempted it, two drowned, one broke his back and the other three knocked themselves out on the last springboard by over-rotating and had to be rescued by lifeguards.
You do know that this dive isn't real, and that RD didn't actually do anything don't you? It's a MOVIE with STUNT DOUBLES and MULTIPLE SHOTS/TAKES!!!
spyyder976 Of course I know that. My comment is purely in jest. I know how films are made, thanks.
You know two lindy's were attempted this past olympics right?
Terence Jay D
Shouldn't he have gotten an A for this class?
Thornton absolutely had the makings of a Varsity Athlete!
Legend has it this was filmed in one take!
Alright, but is nobody gonna talk about how at 1:31, someone actually executed a back-flip back onto the board and then a subsequent double front-flip flawlessly?
Rodney did all his own stunts
awww.........Jacob Cohen..Better known as Rodney Dangerfield....May you rest in peace in the hands of the Lord.....Thank You for bringing smiles to our faces!!
The one and only Rodney 😆. Great man. Awesome movie!
RIP Rodney... Hope you're getting the respect you've always deserved.
For those of us attempting to perfect this move our entire lives this still sets the benchmark nearly seventy years later 👌
As of right now, 2024, 38 years later but you're comment will be true in 2056 ;)
I love how he does armpit noises instead of stretches 😂
"Is that hard?" "It's impossible."
Interesting tidbit about Rodney Dangerfield: At the age of 15, he began to write for standup comedians, and began to perform at the age of 20 under the name Jack Roy. He struggled financially for nine years, at one point performing as a singing waiter until he was fired, and also working as a performing acrobatic diver.
His problem was doing both at once.
Sally Kellerman was so beautiful... And that voice... God, I miss her...
I was on the medical team that arrived at Stanton High School where that was filmed. He was hurting bad but still signing autographs and making fart noises. He told dirty jokes on the ride to the hospital. He had the dive/stunt totally planned out in his mind weeks in advance and pulled it off like TC said on the third try. Rodney was a high dive captain in High School. After the jump said his "balls hurt bad-they got jammed up to Jersey" he said.
Did he also fart a rainbow and introduce you to Elvis? This was done in multiple takes over at least half-a-day using at least one stuntperson.
@@cainster That's Bullshit!!! It happened just like it was shown. I should know I was there that day. Helluva a feat!! Of the other nine who tried it that day, two climbed up, looked down and climbed back down, one stubbed his toe on the way up, the other six injured themselves so badly they had to be put down by the life guards. That's a matter of record buster!! Look it up if you don't believe me. Man you are such a dimwit
These scenes were not filmed at any high school. They were filmed at the since demolished City of Industry Aquatics Center, in Industry Ca.
I dont know what to believe. I mean i find this hard to believe
Sum 41- In Too Deep The video is just like this
Serlok Brixe that’s the point
I read on Wiki that Rodney was an aerobatic diver when he was younger!
Cool!!!!!
Thornton got into the "zone" before diving when he armpit farted :)
Melon....get your suit on...we need ya! 🏊♂️
Best part is while a stunt man / scuba instructor actually did the wide shot diving for camera, Rodney still did the dive board jumps AND an actual dive at least once, due to Rodney's background as a professional diver. So basically two people, with the stuntman doing the in-air flips and Rodney going into the water and coming out of it.
One of the greatest moments in sports history.
table talk?
Simply beautiful. Rodney was the frigging man. I have to watch "Back to School" again after seeing this clip.
You passed! You got all D's and an A. And thus set in motion the lowest standards for that generation.

As a diver this is my dream, do the last part of the triple lindy.
Sazumaro Uchiha the front two and a half? its soooo easy, im 11 and I can do it, unless your younger than me
A perfect 10 score!!!!!
Anyone who says that the Triple Lindy is a made-up, impossible dive never went to the Steel Pier in Atlantic City in its heyday. There was a guy there who looked a helluva lot like Thornton Melon (decent gut), and he could do any dive. He & two other divers would do about 20 minutes of crazy dives, and then the diving horse (with a young girl rider) would top off the performance. And that was just at the end of the Steel Pier. Two movies, and at least one big name popular act in the middle of the Pier. I saw Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, the Four Seasons, Jay & the Americans... lots of others. And Wilt Chamber-hen. What a place.
I was a junior then and was there. It was one of the best moments i have ever seen!
The world needs Rodney dangerfield more than ever right now. If anyone could set everything straight in today's world it would be Rodney. I don't know how but I know he would.

What most people fail to realize is that Rodney Dangerfield actually did do that dive. No stunt doubles. What an amazing man!
