John talks about seeing Guillermo at the Emmys, John winning every year, causing trouble for the HBO lawyers, doing the Strike Force Five podcast with Jimmy, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, intentionally going long with his Emmys acceptance speech, promising his kids Pokémon cards, “Last Week Tonight” returning in February, and doing a stand-up residency with Seth Meyers.

  • My son adores John Oliver. I generally watch LWT episodes the day after they air, but I assumed that my son wasn't paying attention because he was 5. Oh, how wrong I was! Like me, he has autism and is prone to echolalia (repeating EVERYTHING). We were in my car and he recited an ENTIRE episode of LWT, right down to John Oliver's facial expressions and gesticulations, and the swear words. It was hilarious and a bit worrisome too. I figured it was a phase and he'd move on to a new thing to be excited about. Well, he's almost 12 years old and his love of "Joliver" is as strong as ever! He knows that he's not supposed to swear, except during "Joliver time," when he gets to bask in cussing and knowledge. It's honestly adorable to watch him get so animated and excited about learning something new, even if it's a new way to cuss with class.

    • Why has the show been moved to a different Emmy category - a category in which it emphatically does NOT belong? The SOLE reason was a very aggressive, targeted action by the Late Night shows. They have long campaigned, through direct appeals to the award committee and even with a written petition (signed by Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon to my knowledge and likely more) to kick John Oliver out of their category, simply because with him there, they could not win. Kimmel actually betrays it right here in this video when he says “I think we made a terrible mistake” - accidentally admitting that they made it happen. There are no real grounds for this change. LWT crew doesn't “work less”. A single episode takes weeks even months to create, meaning they're always working on multiple episodes at any given time. That's research, fact-checking, interviews, FOIA requests, demands for comments and documents from politicians and companies. The show is so unique because they consult activists in the field, grass-root organizations and the people who are actually affected by specific bad policies, instead of parroting PR statements of capital owners. None of the Late Night shows comes even close, neither does the rest of the liberal TV, with the possible exception of Mehdi Hasan and occasionally Chris Hayes (but they still tend to follow the shallow mainstream news cycle without much of a systemic analysis). When was the last time any of the Late Night genuinely challenged their audience, introduced a new idea or a new perspective or a whole new issue? When was the last time they seriously criticized ANYONE or ANYTHING that has not been already approved for loathing by Liberal Twitter? When was the last time they talked about a topic that was not trending? And before you get angry, ask yourself if you can actually come up with a single example. It's obvious that John Oliver doesn't care who he insults and doesn't care for the awards, and that's probably why he keeps getting them. LWT CREW DOESN'T WORK LESS, THEY JUST PUBLISH THE RESULT OF THEIR WORK LESS OFTEN. And what they publish in a week, has more substance and more bite against the system than a year's worth of Late Night's cheap superficial quips. None of them even spoke up for Palestine and they have the nerve to ask for an award? If the late night hosts want the damned trophy so very much, they and their 3x larger writing rooms should try and do better, instead of complaining to one another, undermining LWT's eligibility and planting the idea in their viewers' heads that John Oliver has some kind of unfair advantage. Imagine if someone argued that we should not fill museums with the best paintings, but with the paintings of artists who covered the most miles of canvas with paint. That, in essence, is the argument behind the campaign to kick LWT out. So now this show - a socio-political analysis and advocacy - competes against cartoons and sketch shows. Sounds logical and fair? No one ever objected to Samantha Bee being in the same category, wonder why. 8-episode dramas compete against 22-episode dramas. Comedies with period costumes, castles and historical consultants compete against single camera modern day office comedies. Reality shows shot indoors in a single studio compete with reality shows shot on 10 locations around the world and a helicopter crew. Everyone gets PAID for participation. Awards are not given for participation, awards are given for excellence.

      @perplexed8880@perplexed88803 ай бұрын
    • @@perplexed8880 the problem with the other late night shows is that they are too afraid to criticize the corporate "establishment" which is who they work for. They spend a lot of time focusing on Trump and the Republicans which is a good distraction from all the scandals/misconduct from corporations/billionaires and REAL issues of today's world. HBO really hates John Oliver talking bad about the corporate establishment and criticizing and pointing out their problems and how it affects working class people in the real world. But since John Oliver's show is winning so many awards every year, HBO is in a pickle and they can't cancel his show though they would like to. HBO's partners are probably not very happy with Oliver telling the world about all the corporate greed and exploitations of regular people.

    • People often instantly reject, and mock what they don't understand. Instead of wanting to learn about the interest in adult colouring for some people, Jimmy tried to be funny in his discrimination, and half serious desire to stop people doing acts of self care, that he doesn't want to understand. This is a man who appears to celebrate the addictive toxic brain poisoning, often brain damaging and life destroying behavior that is getting high, as funny. It's on Jimmy, not on you, that you have found a healthy activity that you enjoy, and benefits you. Jimmy is the child in this situation. I know this was meant to be a joke, but Jimmy's immaturity and lack of understanding, and therefore outdated thinking, as a public spokesperson, grates on me quite often, because his messaging is often not helpful, and in some cases, damaging. Good for you for being mature enough to find a self caring activity that you enjoy, that is known to have a tangibly positive difference in brain health, and therefore quality of life! 👏👏👏👏👏

So the Emmy's moved Last Week Tonight to a new category and they still won🏆

      @MsMcKat-ub4sm@MsMcKat-ub4sm3 ай бұрын

They helped us get through those very hard times. I accompanied him throughout each treatment which was approximately 4 hours each time. I couldn’t concentrate enough to read but coloring was calming. If I couldn’t finish one, the next person would continue it, then the next. It kept our minds off the cancer and the drawings in the end were a group effort.
