Stephen Colbert brings his signature satire and comedy to THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT, the #1 show in late night, where he talks with an eclectic mix of guests about what is new and relevant in the worlds of politics, entertainment, business, music, technology and more. Featuring bandleader Louis Cato and “THE LATE SHOW band,” the Peabody Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated show is broadcast from the historic Ed Sullivan Theater. Stephen Colbert took over as host, executive producer and writer of THE LATE SHOW on Sept. 8, 2015.
John has said before that he has some tension with HBO's lawyers because "they think their job is to stop us from getting sued, and I think their job is to make sure that when we are sued, we win"
And that is a lawyer-level fine distinction 😂
The lawyers should be happy, after all, they've got great job security. HBO might not be happy, but they'll always need lawyers now.
@@askthepizzaguyI mean they’d always need lawyers anyway, but they have an even greater need now
Google's lawyers are very explicitly of the opinion that their job is to win, not to prevent litigation. It works a lot better than hiding from everyone out of fear of maybe needing to go to court.
"The way you keep the best lawyers is by giving them easy cases. If you give them hard cases, they'll just leave for easier ones" --Jack Barker of Silicon Valley, probably.
Stephen: "You've been baiting Disney, which is notoriously litigious" John: *giddy giggling*

John Oliver isn't just a man who gets a kick out of poking the proverbial bear with a stick, he's standing over it with an airhorn while it's sleeping. He's the late night host equivalent of the Road Runner.
Not yet... it hasn't made it to the public domain.
Except nobody expects the anvil to squash the roadrunner. Eventually, given infinite time and courts, someone will squash oliver. And if the finite time coincides with the inevitable end, it would be a sad day.
Ha!! Meep meep….
Whether he's being insulted, or being complimented, John Oliver will always be compared to a bird.
Meanwhile, John Stewart was fired from Apple for a production schedule that included China and AI. I do like John Oliver but I am lately getting the feeling that his gaze might not reach far enough.
Man, what a week. It's only Monday and we've had both Jon and John on!
Hope.
Would be hilarious if it turns out that was Jon in the Steamboat Mickey outfit.
I wanna personally thank Apple TV who I very resentfully paid $9.99/month for a while for an otherwise completely useless platform only to watch Jon, wanna thank them for absolutely not getting how to, identify, buy and own a successful political program, become #1 and sell a zillion subscriptions after, many thanks for meddling, ignoring freedom of speech, show was great but it wasn't the Daily Show! where we wanted him all along! thank you Apple for the extra 10 buck in my wallet and giving me Jon back where they will let him RULE again

John Oliver spent 25 minutes of Chucky Cheese coverage on his show so he can use the Steamboat Mickey mascot at the end.
Technically it was a web exclusive for us millennials to watch during his show on home ownership since we'll never need to know 😢
He also defended Mickey's chicken nuggets for their staunch claim of them being made of chicken, no mouse

Absolutely loved the crowd response to the joke about "the first Volkswagens to leave found their way to Argentina."
The nazis slinking into argentina is why so many argentines are blonde.
Historically meta joke. I'm here for that stuff.
As soon as John started telling the story, I knew where he was going and that's _nuts._ I don't blame the crowd for loving it. Pandering to nostalgia any earlier than the microbus from the 1960s is a _bold_ choice for Volkswagen. There's just too damn many skeletons in that closet lol.
steamboat mickey controlling the crowd is so subtle but hilarirous.

I want to hear interviews with the in house counsel (and/or retained IP counsel) for HBO because representing LWT seems like a very fun job, if one has the right expectations. Normally the goal of in house counsel is avoiding litigation; getting paid to defend John Oliver's choices sounds deliciously fun, because he's always within bounds but provocatively so. [Sorry, lawyer here, ymmv]
IANAL, but I concur!
Yep, while he's clearly having fun with the idea that the lawyers hate him I can totally imagine that it's actually a fun gig. They clearly love pushing the boundaries but it's always in a well thought out way that would be fun to defend.
@@anononomousright?! I enjoy the "the lawyers hate me" bit because some surely do/did, especially early days, but you know now that many of them must love it and seek it out. Honestly I think the only time I've really had a vicarious panic moment for his counsel was in this interview! When he said "Mickey, Steamboat Mickey," bc it is Willy that is for sure out of copyright but the name/image stuff just makes it slightly more annoying to argue. And Disney has been trying, to a debatable extent, to create a new copyright interest in this property (they did a new animated logo with the updated Steamboat character, put a bunch of Steamboat stuff in a video game, etc., ostensibly in honor of the company's 100th anniversary, but I think for bonus IP purposes). There is still a fair use argument; it just struck me that he misspoke here versus on LWT where you know the lawyers vetted it. Regardless, there was a time in life where I really would have enjoyed representing him and the show. I want to hear from the cool nerds who are doing that!
My favorite part of Colbert is when he is genuinely connected to & loves & respects his guest. I feel his delight.
Letterman, Leno, Ferguson, etc. have all said they really only enjoyed like 25% of the guests. Not that the other 75% were bad people or bland or boring or whatever... but they just weren't interesting in what they were there to sell. I mean, I don't even know how many shows they all do, but there's no way you can like every single guest so it definitely shows when they do like/connect with one.
Don’t forget Steamboat Mickey’s catch phrase, WHERE’S SHELLEY? 🎉

It's kind of ironic that EVERY SINGLE CARTOON that Disney has made since Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was once in the public domain until Disney acquired them
Not really. The rights to the Disney media representation of the characters are copyright. Not the original fairy tale. So you can put on a show about Snow White, but you cannot use the exact character designs or character names as used in Disney productions of the tale. The tale is still in the public domain, and as long as you removed any elements specific to Disney's production, you're fine. There's nothing wrong with that as the fairy tale is still public domain. There's nothing stopping you retelling the fairy tale, but you can't use specifically Disney elements to do it.
@@BigHenFor maybe in a few circumstances, but what about Pinocchio, or Dumbo, or Moana and others like Brave and so forth
@dragonweyr44 same thing with Pinocchio. Story existed, and it's been retold by others. You just can't use Disney's depiction (Jiminy Cricket *might* be theirs). If they created the characters in Moana or Merida for Brave, then those are theirs
