Saltburn Interview: Jacob Elordi Calls Barry Keoghan "Pure Electricity"

Jacob Elordi and Barry Keoghan are on fire in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Both play characters presenting themselves as one thing when, in reality, questionable qualities and/or motives lurk beneath the surface.
The film begins with Keoghan’s Oliver, a student struggling to fit in at Oxford University. But, that all changes when Elordi’s Felix Catton takes a liking to him and, eventually, invites Oliver to spend the summer at his family’s estate, Saltburn. While there, Oliver lives a life of opulence and debauchery while navigating the politics of the Catton family and their social scene.
With Saltburn now playing in select theaters and due out nationwide on November 22nd, I got the chance to chat with Elordi and Keoghan about their experience working together as scene partners, their characters’ true intentions, and that unforgettable ending.
Hear all about it straight from Elordi and Keoghan in this Saltburn interview!

  • The sexuality of these two actors was crackling between them and didn't need anything physical to happen between them in order to see it or feel it. They both seem to be very comfortable in who they are, without any embarrassment in what their scenes implied, and that made the sexual tension all the greater. The actors and Emerald have it spot on. And by the way I understood ALL of the controversial scenes in the movie and found them edgy but fully what someone with an obsession for another person would do in the shadows. Oliver's nude dance scene at the end was absolutely lovely, a beautiful male naked body dancing without any shame was simply gorgeous to watch. BTW, I am a 71 year old widow.

  • Jacob is very cerebral without being arrogant, I didn't realise he was only my age. That really shocked me bc he doesn't act with the arrogance of a lot of young actors. He just seems chilled out and passionate about his craft. Barry is a fucking firecracker, I can't wait to see him explore more roles with the intensity+attention to detail that he brings. He could take any character or story and make it worth watching, he's phenomenal. I actually hope they work together again at some point, which I don't usually say about actors. I think they have a really unique chemistry+synergy that translates well through film. One of my favourite films of the year due to Emeralds unhinged style and these 2 acting powerhouses.

  • I LOVED in the movie when Oliver would shrink himself down to draw less attention. Even in the hallway when talking to the girl who he ends up making out with in his dorm, he’s shrinking up on the stairs. Do not pay attention to him. At breakfast in Saltburn, he’s so shrunken down when Duncan’s angry about the eggs. By the end of the movie, Oliver doesn’t shrink himself down, he’s completely naked, standing tall, and even dancing. He takes up space! One of my favorite details in the movie!

  • This movie is wiiiiiild and definitely not afraid to go anywhere. Manipulative, elitist, shocking, gross at times... Even I was mesmerized by Felix and could see how Oliver would feel in some circumstances (he takes it to 11 though!). Jacob Elordi plays him like the nice guy who is obvious to the classism he lives in, but that feels like a rouse too. Barry Keoghan is phenomenal as always, I just hope he doesn't get typecast as the odd guy in every movie--although he nails it every time.

    • The reveal is that he hates him. You see throughout the movie all the incidents he hates how sociopathic and uncaring Felix is. Some people argue he is nice, but he only collects people to make himself seem more interesting to others. He also treats women like objects to have whenever he wants.

These people are super rich-the idea that they wouldn’t demand answers is absurd. And the idea that suspicion wouldn’t be cast on the interloper when all these bodies start dropping, etc etc. I can imagine better endings for the film, but I loved the first 90 minutes and both these actors are fantastic in it.

I had seen undercover footage from egg factories of male chicks shredded live right after hatching and sex identification, I had seen how hens are slaughtered the moment they stop being profitable. I was horrified by what I saw and realized that I could in no way contribute to participate in this horror, to create demand for this abuse of those who, unlike me, have zero voice. So, it would have been nice if one of them said that.

      @stephanydiaz4324@stephanydiaz43245 ай бұрын
    • @@stephanydiaz4324 Well, the timing of it partly explains my reaction. I was just dealing with the situation of trying to find home for six newly hatched chicks rescued from an egg farm. Some of them might turn out to be males. And all male baby chicks are suffocated right after the farmer establishes their sex as they are not needed in egg production. And in big egg productions they are ground up alive in a special chick grinder seconds after hatching. And it’s exactly what it looks like - a worker crudely turning their inverted sex organ inside out (a very painful and possibly lethal act in itself) to see their sex, then throws males on conveyor belt that takes them - piled up on top of one another, alive, moving - straight into the grinder. We are talking billions of male chicks a year. And spent hens are sent to slaughter - no exceptions. And as I was dealing with my search for home for the chicks, i found out the following fun bit of info from one of the farm animal sanctuaries: a postal worker had contacted them crying “please help, egg farmers mail chicks all the time across states in shipping boxes. And we get boxes that are smashed with chicks severely injured or suffocated to death dead. Can’t deal with it anymore. Please help!” So, as a farm animal rescuer, you are constantly aware of this info, and then you see two grown men who must be aware of it in some way (Hollywood is the place where this information is around in one way or the other), who have the resources not to contribute to that but who sit around and talk about eggs in a disconnected context. I get that it all seems “militant” and “self-righteous,” but we have to start sharing this info. Imagine they talked about products of dog abuse - then all commenters would have the same reaction as mine. The animal might be different - the suffering is the same.
