    • What are the biggest drawbacks?

      @tealsquare@tealsquare5 ай бұрын
    • @@tealsquare It's an ugly pile of buildings, with a climate that makes being outside rather unpleasant for about half of the year. Having fun there means going to some inside place to spend money. Ah, and it's pretty much impossible to move around without a car (or taxis). Not only because of the weather or lack of public transportation. There are simply no boardwalks, and where there are, they often end randomly at some point. The upsides: Saudis are by and large friendly people, and if you have money, you can get pretty much anything you want. Apart from booze, although that's not really a big deal after a few weeks of being there.

But putting that aside, most of humanity's awesome achievements (i.e. Great Wall of China, the Coliseum, Panama Canal, NASA's Apollo program, etc., etc.) were created to solve a problem, regardless of its practical application to said problem or whether it even succeeded. So tell me, what problem does the Jeddah Tower solve?

    • @@Isaac-cl8ioI’d rather see a taller building than war. For example back when Russia and the US were competing to get to the moon. Russia made it to space first and orbited the moon first and the us made it on the moon first. To me this is so much better for humanity as a whole. It’s a friendly competition thing and advances technology and public spending. I’d also love to see a government so broke from building massive buildings and advances in technology to make it to space that they can’t spend anymore on war and expansionism. I know, bring it back to reality. Just saying that’s what I’d prefer. I think most people on the planet are sick and tired of governments waging war with people that the public has no problem with.

Just because it's a race to build the biggest structure doesn't mean we should be harming our planet in the process. Our future should be mainly focused on things like net zero and still being able to achieve incredible architecture like some of these mega projects but instead using renewable resources even if it's more costly. • Stop bein pretentious. When other countries (the west) were building their infrastructure, nobody talked about sustainability. Now, when other countries want to catch up, it's bad and not sustainable.

  • seriously though, if you were a business owner, would you really want to have to go on a 1km upward commute to reach your office every time? Cool it is maybe the first 10 times and to show your buddies, but afterwards probably a more and more frustrating thing. When you want to go out for lunch, for any meetings, forgetting something in your car and having to retrieve. It's all vanity bragging rights with no actual consideration for ergonomics.
