Lana Del Rey - Shades Of Cool (Lyrics)
My baby lives in shades of blue
Blue eyes and jazz and attitude
He lives in California, too
He drives a Chevy Malibu
And when he calls, he calls for me and not for you
He lives for love, he loves his drugs, he loves his baby, too
But I can't fix him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather
But you are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
My baby lives in shades of cold
Cold heart and hands and aptitude
He lives for love, for women, too
I'm one of many, Bonnie's blue
And when he calls, he calls for me and not for you
He prays for love, he prays for peace, and maybe someone new
But I can't help him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather
'Cause you are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable
Your hot, hot weather in the summer
Hot, hot, neglectful lover
Hot, hot weather in the summer
High, neglectful lover
You're crumbling, sadly
You're sadly, crumbling
You are invincible
I can't break through your world
'Cause you live in shades of cool
Your heart is unbreakable

Lana wasn't made for this time. It's like she time traveled. We're so lucky to be blessed with such a perfect human.
She was a made for a place with no time, she should have been born into the immortal universe to bless the heavens for eternity. Instead the gods gave us queen to fix our tragic earth. She is the gift born from the heavens.
Her voice is literally what an angel probably sounds like when you're standing at the gates of heaven
always be skeptical when such a beautiful visage comes your way. Always remember the tales of the sirens in the writings of Homer, and let us not forget delilah. There is much wisdom there my young padawan.
I feel like crying, she's so perfect.
Amen
I can't stop noticing how all of her features are so perfectly sculpted like the actresses from 70s era. Even her voice and timbre resemble that vintage aesthetic from the golden years. And often, it's hard for me to believe that she was actually born in the millennial generation.
ˆLANA DEL REY = 2010. Year now = 2023. All normal people listening Gomunkul 6 now

She look like Priscilla
@@GhNDVgp5I copypasted "Gomunkul 6" someone on reddit asked "who or wtf is Gomunkul 6?" top reply was "maybe eminem's new album" xD Another said "EVERY song sounds exactly like THIS: Hammana-Jammana-Joominy. Zibbity-Zabbity-Zoobity. Kriggity-Kraggity-Kroopity. Hazza-Buh-Zazza-Buh-Doogity."
What I love about Lana Del Rey is her old soul. It's like she isn't from this generation and she came from the past to save the music industry
real it's like Kurt Elvis n Marilyn n Amy were here to create her n save us
She actually isnt from this generation shes 38

HOW was she not approached to do a JAMES BOND theme song!!?!?!?!!?
She was, I heared that 24 from Honeymoon had to be on some kind of Bond movie
It people said that 24 had to be on a JB film 'cause this song is a typical 007 song, not because Lana was approached by Sony or anything...
Wait, but what Bond movie are you talking 'bout? Skyfall or Spectre?
Davi Spectre, Shades Of Cool screams James Bond, Radiohead did a full song for it also and got the shaft for Sam Smith!!! WTF.....Radiohead released the MP3 to fans for free.
Man, that Sam Smith song was total bs, didn't have anything to do with 007...

im a rock music listener. songs that i listen to by lana are generally from the ultraviolence. her best album.
This song will always be an epitaph to my first relationship ever. The person I was with, similar to the wreckage of a beautiful person, as the male protagonist of this video - all comes flashing back. The endless long nights on highways, the excess, the glamour and the sudden explosion of it all. It’ll all stay frozen in this soundtrack for me forever. I hope he’s happier and healthier and calmer whoever they are now.
She dies and he sees her ghost everywhere... Lana has really cool interpretations of her songs
Mantu Lal Interesting concept, I see it all differently now.
Scarlett Jeane Yeah, all the evidence is here. We see a bullet being fired at one point. We also see a metal rod piercing Lana's "ghost". When she emerges from the pool, we see that she's wearing a cross. It all fits!!
This. Is. Mind. Blowing. It makes so much sense!
Nina Asmoni damn as he gets older and older she still haunts him and loves him
Yes and when she swims past he does the sign of the cross!
when lana sang “youuuu” after the guitar solo, i literally felt my soul leave my body
Rest in peace brother,,,,
That's how she steals them and stores them to keep herself youthful.

Right?!?!?! That was everything
God I love revisiting this song. Especially late at night, it feels more dreamy and elusive. Uv will forever be a favorite album, and I disagree when people say she’s topped it since it came out. This album changed the music industry after born to die. She created her own genre it seems. Her music will always feel personal no matter what form. But this album will always be where the feeling all starts.

9 years ago lana released the album ultraviolence, simply one of her best albums🖤
I love that Lana´s platonic love in her videos aren´t normally beautiful hollywood guys. They are realistic people, sometimes older than her, sometimes from the same gender, or sometimes just not attractive in an orthodox way, and the video doesn´t have to change because of that. I wish more artist would send this type of messages to their fans.
So true!
Her real fiancée is her age
+Tanisha Monroe Yeah, but that has nothing to do with her videos.
Why should artist's send messages? They should just make art.
Art always sends a message. Whether it is what it is, it stands for something else, if it's just meant to never be understood, or maybe just to convey the artists feelings. Or maybe the artist was just bored. A world where art means nothing is not one I'd like to live in.
I will never forget the energy of listening to this on vinyl while on a farm as a teenager in high-school
That sounds amazing

is it just me or this video is not some Lana’s sugar daddy fantasy but it’s actually about an older man remembering a lover from the past who’s gone now?
I think you're right
I think she's his sweetheart that passed away young but still loves him even though she's on the other side. That's why she says she can't break through his world and can't fix him because the realms that they're in keep them apart.
This is the boy from Born to die you know, but in his old age. She died in that crash but he continued to see her ghost for the rest of his life.

Lana del Rey deserves to be praised. In my opinion, she could handle the heavy burden of carrying our stories as millennials, this broken generation that went through a lot in a world that just won't stop giving us a break. There's no one but Lana who trailblazed a path for younger artists to be brave and presents stories that don't necessarily fit in the box of "standard love". You'll find stories of death, depression, love, atypical relationships, abuse and etc. within the folds of Lana's lyrical contents. Had it not been inspired by what she does, I would have never been able to put out an award winning film out there, inspired by her song "California", talking about how she navigating through Barrie's depression. This is not about a young Woman dating an Older guy, this is about an Old man remembering what could have being the love of his life that die young. Lana is a Ghost that he sees everywhere. Prove? At min 3:39 the guy makes the cross sing when he sees her pass in front of him swimming. He grew old sad and lonely. Maybe wanting someone new but couldn't find anyone like her.
oh, thats an interesting way to see the video, makes sense but im not 100% sure thats the meaning. at some point i thought it was another lolita video, and thought all ultraviolence videos were gonna be attached.
Very interesting. Kind of like "Lolita" how Humbert couldn't get over the girl that he loved as a young boy.
I was thinking the same thing just because he makes the cross
In many of her songs she says that she likes old men, it's not a secret (Cola refference). So, i think there is no special meaning behind this video. It's well known that Lana likes or at least she liked to have fun with rich, old men. Search through her songs and you'll understand.
I love ur interpretation!
even if this song is too relatable to me now and my heart hurts a lot, this time it didn't hurt listening to this song. Lana's angelic siren-like voice just took me to another place and there was no pain. this was like healing.

She's more like a few decades behind, this reminds me of old bond movies.
+mαrk jєffєrч cαmpαчnσ She's one of the most intelligent female celebs in the history.
For me this song is about loving a person despite their cold personality. Here Lana is constantly pointing out how aloof and detach her ‘baby’ is, but despite this she’s in love with him and tries to change him (even though she can’t). She loves him despite his love of drugs, women, and his ‘strange weather’ (unpredictability). From the first verse, we can already tell that Lana’s ‘baby’ is a typical old Hollywood bad boy because he has the ‘blue eyes’ (cold gaze), ‘jazz’ (charisma), and ‘attitude’. She also points out that ‘he lives in California too’, assumably because there might’ve been loads of boys like him in California. But at the end at the verse even though this boy ‘lives for love’ (is a womanizer/sleeps around) and is also a drug addict, he still loves his ‘baby’ (Lana). In the pre-chorus, Lana mentions her frustration of not being able to ‘help’ her significant other and having the inability to ‘make him better’, this might be because of the boy’s ‘strange weather’ that she mentions at the end of the pre-chorus. Having a strange weather could mean having mood swings or constantly changing one’s desires and beliefs. In the chorus, she also mentions how being in a relationship with this person saddens her deeply because not only he is ‘unfixable’ (doesn’t want to change his ways), but she ‘can't break through’ his ‘world’, that could possibly mean despite her attempts of trying to understand him, she always ends up feeling lost because this ‘baby’ of hers lives in ‘shades of cool’ (his own world). Lana also says that her boy’s heart is unbreakable, this might be because he seems so detached and aloof, she feels as though he wouldn’t care if she leaves him or not. In the second verse, Lana further describes her ‘baby’. Not only does he live in his own world but he’s also has a cold heart (he’s detached, cold hands (he can be physical), and cold aptitude (he tends to be aloof in general). Now Lana is more pessimistic as she mentions how her boy lives for love (sex) and women, and how she just ‘one of many’, and the most shockingly of her boy’s lover’s is ‘blue’ (dead), Lana might’ve added this one bit to exaggerate how meaningless it is to be her boy’s girl because they’re all easily discarded and forgotten. Despite all this, Lana still believes that she’s special to her boy because the boy only ‘calls’ for her when he ‘calls’, this could be Lana’s way of saying that the boy only longs for her and thinks about her despite having many lovers. Lana also believes that he’s a good person inside because she mentions how the boy prays for ‘peace’ and ‘love’, but then Lana discreetly adds ‘and maybe someone new’, this could be her way of hinting the fact that she doesn’t feel secure in the relationship because she feels as though her ‘baby’ might find her replacement one day. Despite her beliefs of being his special ‘baby’, she also realizes that she might not be special to him for long because of his changeable nature. In the bridge, Lana frustratedly sings of her boy’s hot weather (bad temper) in the summer and how even though he’s hot, he’s also a ‘neglectful lover’. But then she talks of how he’s ‘sadly crumbling’, this could mean that even though Lana still doesn’t understand him, she slowly notices his patterns and realize that there’s a reason behind his coldness, and he doesn’t even realize that Lana notices this. In conclusion, I think that this is a heartfelt song that resonates with a lot of people who’s in a relationship with a toxic person, is emotionally attached to said person, and wants them to change despite how seemingly impossible it is. This song really explores the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty of being with someone who lives in their own world and doesn’t want to change. Word of advice: always follow your heart but think about yourself and your well-being because you ARE important.
Wow love this interpretation
Patiently waiting for your award... This is amazing 😊
Fiercly Blue great annotation
Deep, dope. Excellent 👏
agree with this one
one of the best bridges in a song
I love that opening scene... Eyes glazed over deserted midnight roads, driving a car with cold night winds rushing over your head... Shades of cool indeed
I don't care about all the others, Lana IS the best thing that ever happened to music. The only reason she isn't as recognized by mainstream music is because people nowadays don't appreciate real music. They really don't. People are so unintelligent now, they wouldn't know art and creativity if it hit them in the face. That's why shit songs like Anaconda, Work, MILFS are so popular. If Lana were around years ago, let's say 60s, 70s. She would be HUGE, she would go down in musical history and become a legend. Lana Del Rey, i fucking adore you and your music. Please, never ever stop creating.
amen
I agree but artists like Ariana Grande have incredibly amazing talent. Ariana likes to try new things with her music and she doesn't use auto tune or anything. That's why I think so many people like her.
omg soo true i always imagine what it would have been like when lana was active in the 60s
So glad that there are people like you who understand this and apprecciate a real music. I choose not quite a mainstream type of music and I'm afraid I'll have a very hard time if you know what I mean. But still woun't change my music preferences.
Oh, please, enlighten us some more.
Oh Lana, words can't even describe how your songs make me feel.....
orgasm of feelings
eargasms
Eyegasms too
It sucks how she doesn't get enough credit but all these other wack artists do instead. But I guess its a good thing to keep it that way so she won't get over rated 😍
xyzangeel I totally agree! Lol I hate telling others I'm listening to her because I feel like they'll ruin her music
Stop asking who's here in 2024, we never left.

@@spicyshrimp4323 interesting enough I'm mostly a metal and rock person but I love me some Lana Del Rey. she's not even like most of the pop 'artists' you hear today
@@MasterSplinter931 lol ikr! I feel the same way... ✌🤠😵❤🤣🔥
Lana's songs remind me of a timeless oldie playing on a phonograph in the middle of a calm, quiet, cool breeze, and peaceful starry night with your love. Her music is definitely a time machine.
How could you not fall in love with this girl? Her voice is amazing.
Now, this is the kind of song that I'd like to listen to while driving around aimlessly, at three in the morning.
