Pre-LP Gallardo Oil Change: Step-by-Step!

Part 1 of ? as we seek to get our Pre-LP Gallardo to a track this year, we cover an oil change to cycle in a proper weight of oil for track use and cover the process and some pitfalls to avoid along the way. Potentially useful as a DIY reference, but please do not misconstrue as professional mechanical advice. I'm just a guy on KZhead who does things with cars.

  • Have you shared any just the laps with the Lamborghini?

    • I haven't had it on a proper track yet. Somewhere back in the video catalog I've run a few autocross events but don't worry the laps are coming 😁

  • the oil level check procedure sounds ridiculous. how could oil need 2 minutes to get to important places to stabilize a level? and after shut down, how quickly does the level rise on the stick. i assume youre measuring the oil tank level. what's the level look like before a cold start? does it look low?

    • Yeah, I'm not sure I can defend the 2 minutes as fully necessary (vs 30 s to a minute or something), but I understand the goal is to capture the level while the oil is uniformly circulated. It's mainly pumping the level of oil in the tank up to a "running" state. If you dip the tank cold it reads ~2 quarts low and over-filling is high on the list of problems caused by user error if the forums are any evidence.

    • @@LapoftheWorld i wonder how much oil you could get out of the sump tank with a top-draining, oil sucker, vs how much total oil comes out from all the drain holes.

    • @@odortiz Would be an interesting experiment. Based on what came out of each it was probably like 20/80% tank/sump

  • Your suposed to do that 2000rpm warm up before you change the oil, to make sure oil will drain well. I think you did not do that before changing the oil. 👌👌👌👌👌👌

    • Busted 😁(sort of). You're correct, in a perfect world you should do the drain part "hot" so you're suspending contaminants and quickening the outflow. In my case I had the car down for other work and timing just didn't work out for me to do that this time. Definitely a note for others though!

    • Or you can just drain oil cold, crack a beer or smokes, and make a day of it as it drains 😊
