Can I run a sub 1:35 half marathon at aged 58?
This is an introduction to a series where I will document my preparations for the 2024 Gold Coast Half Marathon.
Yeah, I have run faster previously, but a lot has happened since then and I go through why I have set this target for the 21.1km race in 8 weeks.
I go through some of this week's running, including a failed speed session and my fastest 5k of the year.

Thanks mate.
Thanks Woody - really looking forward to following your journey. I'm 54, started running 6 months ago and have been fortunate so far not to hit any health issues. I have the same target: a sub 1:35 in the Brisbane Half in two weeks time. I am feeling my age, I still don't feel like I've fully recovered from GC Running Festival Half a few weeks ago.
Thanks for following along mate, hope I can help you in some small way. That GC Running Festival course is a tester. Hope you are recovering well and looking forward to Brisbane. I might see you there.
Good luck mate. Enjoy the process
Cheers mate.
I've never run an EASY 5K race 😂, they are the hardest distance, too long to truly go all out and too short to settle into a consistent pace. You'll smash your health issues the way you've smashed your running goals over and over again, Neil. As you know i have my own setback atm but i can't wait to finish my treatment and get back to running, in my case it clears the mind and tires the body, what more could you want 💪🫶🤝
Another great vid 👍
Cheers Lee.
Hi Woody. Looking forward to see how you get on and what I can use for my own training. Bytheway, with regards to your health issues you are doing exactly the correct thing by monitoring your body and adjusting your training accordingly. I had a heart attack in February 2022, have a stent fitted and take daily medicine. I turn 65 in July and ran 20-47 for a parkrun in April. I aim to lower that time by the end of summer (yes, I live in the UK). I have a couple of 10ks lined up and intend to run a half next year, so your videos will be really interesting. Really appreciate your honest delivery. All the best.
Hi mate, thanks for sharing your story. No doubt, I have become a lot more aware of my health in recent times. You take it for granted when you're younger. You are an inspiration the way you have come back from your heart condition. Good luck chasing that sub20 and your future running.
@@runwithwoody Cheers. I'll let you know when I go sub20.
Hi Woody, great video, I'm 57 and targeting a sub 1:40 half marathon so will follow with interest.
Great to have you along. Where is your 1.40 attempt?
I'm in the UK. It's going to be Kenilworth HM September 10th. It's in the Midlands through the Warwickshire countryside.
I am having similar issues mate ,I know exactly what your feeling , keep grinding Neil. Good luck on the Half, gave you a little thanks£ for helping me out with your videos over the years ❤
Andy, you're a true legend. Thank you. We get these curve balls. But we just got to keep pushing ahead. All the best, mate, and keep up the grind.
Love the idea of doing a series building towards GC, love watching stuff like this, Excited to watch Woody.
Thanks mate. Hope I can live up to your expectations.
Hey Neil, when I got my foot xray one of the findings not related was some moderate vascular calcification. To get a calcification score is over 500 bucks and that doesn't mean its around the heart so I've not worried about it. Frankly listening to you I rather not bother. It's called old age. Tests will find stuff even if it's not the cause of the pain so I'm going on as if nothing is wrong. I think you've just lost the desire and I don't blame you. You've been running a long time. I'm sure you have a sub 90min still. I think I have and I'm 61 this year but I have to find the desire to get back from this injury in my foot plaguing me. Only doing 30 odd km / week so have to work on that.
Hey Alan, thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear about your foot issue, hope it comes right soon. I'm like you and tests, but I noticed changes in breathing, so thought it was best to check it out. Only then did the doc suggest the CT scan for the calcification which came back high. I'd love to get back to sub90, but the way I'm going at the moment it's just not going to happen. And you're probably right, the desire is not what it was, but still want to see what I can do. Take care.
You will@@runwithwoody when you're ready. As older athletes let the fitness come to you. Longer breaks in the reps. Forget the 60s on and 60 off. Try 3min off. You still get the leg stiffness and speed with less fatigue. Nice to go fast and not be knackered.
sorry to hear, that you probably have to take medication for your health problems permanently. Best of luck for your upcoming races. One thought if that is okay...please consider the fact, that the medication does not solve any heart porblems, the only thing it does is to reduce the symptoms. So pushing the running too close to the cliff is quite dangerous and you could fall deep and hard, and maybe, just maybe the risk might not be worth the reward
Thanks for your concern mate. Everything has checked out fine with the old ticker, the medication is there to make sure that the calcification doesn't get any worse. I won't be pushing too hard/close to the cliff anymore. I love running and trying to run fast, but there comes a point where you have just got to take a step back and say, "OK, let's enjoy this now, have a little push every now and then, but don't go and destroy yourself".
I am sorry to hear about your heart issues! ❤
Thanks, mate. I'm doing good. Unfortunately, there are many others that are a lot worse than me. I'm very grateful to be able to do what I can.
Sorry to hear about your meds, just remember exercise is better than any pill for your health, if the pills discourage you from exercise, you have to wonder if they are providing a net benefit. Worth getting a 2nd opinion, and if it's a statin, try a different type/brand that may have fewer side effects for you.
Thanks, Nigel. That is the drug I'm on. It's not worrying me greatly at the moment with my running. I can handle a little bit of aching and tiredness. It's definitely not stopping me from doing anything. But if that changes, then I will look for an alternative.
Would love to know if you are doing anythng special to help your breathing. Being 72 I find getting oxygen to my muscles quite a problem. Thanks
Hi Trevor, I'm not doing anything specific. I'm aware of it and try to control it as much as possible when running. I'm trying to take in good or deep breaths and exhale as much as I can, but it can be difficult when you pick up the pace a bit.
Do you know ur singlet was back-to-front on May 6. I saw it on strava 😄
Hahaha, yeah I did realise about 2 minutes before we finished that run. You'd be surprised how many people noticed that. I thought it would just slip through unnoticed.
@runwithwoody haha I think I noticed because I have the same singlet 😄
hey Run with woody, I can tell you are a well disciplined machine who's channel has been pumping out content for a very long time from your massive almost 500 video base. I would bet that you want to grow your channel into a full fledged business if you could, so you could leave whatever your full time day job is, or just make a little extra cash on the side from KZhead. Whatever you goal is Woody, I can help you achieve it. I am putting together a group of content creators who want nothing more than to grow their channel. In this group, the content creators will meet over video chat online once a week, suggesting improvements, going over anyalitics, and overall learning from each others mistakes so your channel can grow faster. This will likely skyrocket the growth of your channel, and the other althete/mindset channels who are also in the group as many minds pumping out ideas for you are better than 1. If you are interested to join such a group, let me know, if not, good luck on your journey, you make some pretty solid content and will be a 5k in to time!
