Billy Joe Saunders lost his WBO Super Middleweight world title to Canelo, who cemented his reputation as boxing’s biggest superstar and the number 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Saunders was called an ‘embarrassment to the sport’ for ‘quitting’ against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez by former 2x Light Middleweight champion Fernando Vargas.
“You’re really going to freaking quit like a V, like a vagina,” Vargas said on Instagram, tagging a wounded Saunders in his video rant.
The 31-year-old was transported from the AT&T Stadium in Texas for immediate surgery after suffering a complete fracture of his orbital bone - the eye socket.

In the eighth round at AT&T Stadium on Saturday night, the Mexican champion egged on a record-breaking crowd as he pelted Billy Joe Saunders in their super middleweight unification fight. Alvarez inflicted enough damage to enhance his legacy, winning the fight after it was waved off between the eighth and ninth rounds.
Saunders' right eye had swollen shut, and the bout was called off with Saunders still on the stool. With the victory, Alvarez holds three of the four belts in the 168-pound division.
"I knew this would be final outcome," Alvarez said through a translator in his postfight interview. "I knew it. I think I broke his cheek and knew he wasn't coming out of the corner. I told Eddy [Reynoso] he wasn't coming out because I broke his cheek. I knew it was it."

Great vid man, completely agree with all three points. Especially regarding the strange scoring and casting by the announcers, it felt like they wanted so bad for the fight to be close when it just wasn’t.
did you see de la hoya vs mayweather? de la hoya was losing that fight in somewhat similar to how bjs did. the score ended up being closer because the judges were giving rounds to oscar simply for coming forward. if bjs was moving in and out in erratic directions; canelo would have had more of a problem to solve. bjs didn't though. he came forward then ducked down to pivot or tie canelo up. after 7 rounds of that... there was no real thinking to do.

This guy has never faced an A level fighter, he chose to fight tomato cans and assured himself that he wouldn't be ready to face Canelo. This paper champion built up an undefeated record against those cans, so he and his fans, thought he was better than he actually is. And the same goes for Caleb Plant too.

Definitely a pretty extreme possibly career ending injury. Unfortunate that he trash talked other fighters making the same decision but his corner didn’t the right thing, fighting on with his orbital bone broken entirely loose from the socket would certainly ended his career and likely lost his vision in that eye for the rest of his life.

The difference between Canelo and other boxers is that Canelo does not train 3 months before the fight. Canelo trains year-round. His movements become second nature, completely natural. He’s committed to boxing, it’s his job.

This was a huge step up in class for Saunders. It's all very well picking up alphabet championships against limited opposition but he fell well short here. Exactly what was expected I am afraid.
well, let`s examine the facts, tibbs said he didn`t get the response he needed from bjs to send him out for the ninth round. bjs showed no opposition to the fight being stopped unofficially by his corner. the referee did not intervene and considered bjs fit to continue. a doctor was not involved in the decision to pull him out of the fight. there is no information or medical evidence regarding his injury. he is unavailable for comment. ben davidson appears to have sacrificed his integrity for friendship. i think it is worth noting that once you tell a lie then everything you say after that will always be treated with suspicion. the ultimate damage from all this will not be from the fact that bjs pulled out of the fight which is his right but from the way the decision was presented to the public. this is a terrible time for bjs, there are so many people involved now that it is doubtful that there will ever be any real clarity. too many people have now placed themselves in a position that if they do rethink what they have said then it will only compound the damage they have already done to themselves. "you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time"

I had him winning 2 -3 rounds as well. It was a good entertaining fight until the whiffed leaping left - he seemed really tired at the start of that round. Devastating
and to be fair to BJS corner or him pulling out of the fight - it's a very serious quad fracture of the orbital which could be career ending in itself. No point in having him go out there to take more damage in a fight which he was already losing
People keep saying BJS was tired at the start of the round. Look back at it - he was jumping up and down before the start. I don't think he was particularly tired and I would have been confident he would have gone the 12. Just made a strategic mistake with putting his head down when leading with those lefts to the body and although Canelo missed a fair few uppercuts he eventually caught him with a massive shot. I thought he made Canelo look human/ordinary at times but Canelo is just too good at the moment.

Saunders career should have taken off after his best win against Andy Lee that would have been the perfect time for a Canelo or GGG fight for him. I believe waiting for one of those mega fights contributed to cautious matchmaking and inactivity to prevent blowing a mega a fight and that influenced his career and legacy. He was an elite fighter at middle weight but super middle weight ,inactivity and facing a very active Canelo was not going to end well. I think he will fight again because despite having earned a lot of money he won't want to leave the game with the quitter stigma. The Eubank Jnr fight is very winnable for him and will generate a lot of money, there are other fights out there for him and when he retires it will be on his terms.

you put in clean punches but you totally ignored ring generalship, effective aggression and defense. canelo tucked up and countered. billy came forward and was the more active fighter pushing the action. most fair judges wouldn't give canelo more than 3 rounds. however, that wasn't canelo's game plan (boxing and winning on points). team canelo had been working on the lead hook and rear uppercut overtime and then some. those are the best weapons an orthodox fighter has against a southpaw. as far as power punches. notice canelo really made no use of the lead straight right. they also knew billy fatigues and gases out quick. when bjs got under canelo's skin, canelo decided to hurt bjs and even made the "prediction". the bottom line was that canelo executed his game plan and got the w. as for the character bit, billy is no medical professional and has never been hurt like that. did he run his mouth? yeah, but it's fun. do you remember ricardo mayorga? that guy was pure entertainment. anyways, i've had my left orbital shattered to bits. there are different levels or classifications of fractures. the less severe ones tend to swell up huge while the more severe fractures tend to have almost no swelling... just a bruise and have a sunken in area (generally anyways). i'd have to see bjs's x-rays and that to be certain of course. i know when i broke mine, my equillibrium was gone, my ears heard nothing but ringing and for a about 15 seconds maybe my vision was replaced with bright and yellow lights.
