EV ULTRA cable - Combined power and data for easier and neater EV charger installations

2024 ж. 13 Мам.
25 737 Рет қаралды

Electric vehicle chargers often data connectivity for either a current sensing transformer or to connect to the internet to enable smart features.
This EV Ultra armoured cable combines power and data cables within a single jacket.
Combing the two cables in one enables a neater electrical installation. Fewer cables reduce the number of entry points within an EV charger and reduce the risk of water ingress.
Available as SWA armoured or Tuff sheathed versions in 4.00 and 6.00 mm CSA conductors.
Manufactured in the UK by Doncaster Cables

  • You can always rely on Doncaster Cables to produce a quality product. The jacket of the Data cable must be rated the same as the other conductors within the EV ULTRA cable. Each end will be connected to a junction box, before being split to go to their respective termination points. Thanks for sharing guys 👍🏻

    • CAT5e can run 10GBps safely upto 50m and 1Gbps out to the 100m of the spec before a switch / repeater is needed of some sort, this also means it can carry 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps but not having chance to play about with either of those (its 1Gbps or 10Gbps in the datacentre) I could not say what's "safe" CAT6 and CAT6a are certified for 10Gbps upto 100m per the Ethernet spec (again this can carry 10Mbps/100Mbps/ though that's very rare these days, 1gbps / 2.5Gbps / 5Gbps / 10Gbps and the higher 25Gbps/40Gbps Ethernet speeds though it can depends on the install and you might need to go to CAT8 to get it certified [CAT7 is not a real standard imho, its made up by the ISO board who are not the word on specs for this stuff, that's ANSI/TIA......] So while it would have been nice to have CAT6 for the better base specs of the cable its not a show stopper (very much doubt 'normal' home users are going to have 10Gbps for some time now) the fly here is that wireless access points / mesh systems are now starting to come to market where the rj45 Ethernet connector / port runs at upto 2.5Gbps, new computers are now getting 2.5Gbps / 5Gbps / 10Gbps (along with 1Gbps) network ports but the typical network switch in the home if any or the home "router/super hub/smart hub" [what ever the isp trys to call it] only have 1Gbps ports so it limits the internal LAN [not to be confused with your external WAN] speed if you use the hardwire option for backhaul on the mesh / access points and it limits the computer; basically there is a entire chain of devices that need to be upgraded first and it depends on what the end user is going to do.

    • @@Apex180 Also, what you use 10Gbit for? 1Gbit connection is more than enough for a PC, your internet connection to the outside world is far slower, and even if you have fibre you don't get more than 1Gbit, and even if you have a NAS in your home, 1Gbit means 120MB/s of transfer, is not slow considering that it's more than the speed of a standard 3.5" hard drive (yes you can have a SSD NAS, or a NAS with RAID 0/5/6 etc, not that common). Most people won't probably even notice any difference between a gigabit and a 100Mbit connection.

      @alerighi@alerighi2 жыл бұрын
    • @@alerighi At home ? am still very much 1Gbps LAN with the nas being on a teamed / lag setup. At work in the datacentre, when we are pushing petabytes of data.... 10Gbps is starting to be the standard port speed for us, with 25Gbps and 40Gbps seeing use. that's not to mention the 8gig/16gig fibre channel stuff used in the SAN's more speed never hurt anyone I am fully aware that for most home users their own WAN will still be slower then their LAN and that is likely to be that for some time. That being said 2.5Gbps lan ports are starting to be standard on newer motherboards and some high end ones even have 10Gbps; Apple Macs i think are starting to come with 10Gbps though not having one i can not confirm; if you don't have the other bits to go with this it kinda feels like a waste. Newer wireless access points / mesh systems are starting to appear on the market with 2.5Gbps ports and if you hardwire them for the backhaul [its needed because the wireless speeds are now at a point that they can saturate a 1Gbps link] and you only have 1Gbps switch you are leaving performance on the table (ignoring the fact that your WAN speed won't be 2.5Gbps etc.) The market is moving but at a very slow speed. 10Gbps switching is still expensive, though if you don't mind 2nd hand some ex enterprise kit is making its way to the 2nd hand market. The 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps switches are still very few and expensive when you consider a cheap 8 port gig switch can be had for £30, asking someone to pay £150+ for 8 port 2.5/5 gig based one means it won't sell at the same volume, but that's the same with any new tech standard / speed Only when the ISP provided routers / hub / home hub / superhub start coming with 2.5/5 Gbps ports on them will I think we will see a bigger move to faster LAN speeds for the home use.

  • This might be different for different EV boxes. Does the data connection have to be direct from monitor to charge socket or can the cat5 be used to terminate into a lan on either end and the monitor to charge socket comm is then just part of Lan? Example application: use this cable to connect power to a garage into a garage DB, data then goes to a hub in the garage, hub then connects to EV charger but other hub ports can be used to connect other stuff in the garage ( wifi extender etc )

  • Hi guys. Where the link for the video explaining the regs regarding this cable type please.

    @JG-wx2xs@JG-wx2xs2 жыл бұрын
  • How does this go with isolation requirements? For example, in sweden, if a Extra Low Voltage cable is run alongside a single-isolated Low Voltage Cable, the ELV part of installation is no longer considered SELV/PELV isolated, and you must be a electrician to make modifications in the CAT network, including disconnecting and connecting for example computers or routers to switch, unless a approved isolator device is put on the CAT cable on the other end provding separation and optical isolation of mains. This because the isolation of the single isolated wires, could fail, potentially outputting mains on the CAT network, as the isolation of a CAT cable isn't approved for mains voltages. The cable could be acceptable by safety standards ONLY if the grey sheating of the UTP cable is classified/approved for mains, so even if the single isolation of the phase or neutral wire would fail, the CAT isolation would be approved to keep mains away from CAT network (double isolation requirement). Running a UTP cable alongside a normal double-insulated cable is approved however, since there is 2 mains-classified isolation layers that must fail before there is any risk of UTP network becoming live.

Running it in the ‘safe zone’ was not an option. So I’ve chased out behind the plasterboard just above skirting my understanding is that the swa should be earthed at one end or the other. This has been a real challenge with such a big, inflexible cable. I’ll re-post once it’s all connected.

  • I hate seeing cables draped around buildings, it looks horrendous. Electricians have a penchant for installing this crap around buildings as its "easy". I hope its banned in the future. If you can't find a way to hide it - don't install it.
