Subjectivity in Art and Film - Film has a singular ability to put an audience in a character’s shoes, and in this video, we dissect how a filmmaker can create a character’s perspective.

MOVIES THAT USE PERSPECTIVE
All movies have a point of view. A truly objective film, one independent of personal opinion or emotion, is impossible. A filmmaker’s viewpoint will always be present. Even if a movie is a single, locked off shot, the filmmaker chooses when to begin and end the shot, where to place the camera, how to light the scene, and so on.
But filmmakers can also emulate the perspective of their movie’s character, creating sequences that are colored by a character’s subjectivity. In this video, we break down why this is so important and how it can be achieved.
SUBJECTIVITY IN WRITING
Subjectivity can begin on the page. Most screenwriting textbooks will preach objectivity, instructing writers to only write what the camera can see. But, when done deliberately, infusing subjectivity into the script can hint at a director to shoot from a specific point of view. We look at the scripts for May December, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more to see how one can write from a character’s perspective without necessarily breaking screenwriting rules.
SUBJECTIVE CINEMATOGRAPHY
Probably the most obvious form of subjective cinematography is the point of view shot. This is where the camera is literally representing what a character is seeing. But not all subjective camera work needs to be so obvious.
A director of photography can use camera movement, lens choices, color, and shot size to subtly inhabit a character’s subjectivity. Think, for example, of a shot where a character is stressed. To emphasize this stress, the cinematographer may opt for a handheld, shaky camera, as can be seen in The Killer.
EDITING SUBJECTIVITY IN FILM
Editing can further place an audience in a character’s head. Think of the iconic slow motion shot when Richie sees Margot in The Royal Tenenbaums- by slowing the footage and placing a wistful song under it, the editor effectively makes us feel as entranced as Richie. Special effects can be used as well. In Midsommar, subtle distortion effects are used to show us what Dani is seeing after she consumes the mushrooms.
Subjectivity in film is incredibly powerful. Using writing, cinematography, and editing, a filmmaker can get an audience to empathize with a character they may be nothing like. This is one of the great promises of filmmaking, exposing audiences to new worlds and viewpoints. The next time you start filming, think about what your character might be thinking and how you could use filmmaking techniques to illustrate those thoughts.

    • 11:17 Although Messerchmidt may have used a telephoto lens and film at a distance, the Sniper's scope AGAIN is questionalbly executed. In the movie at 10:06 the reticle overlaps a window and reads 2.5MRAD, which makes it ~400m away. Yet we can see, the building on the other side of the square is ~50-80m away. What puzzles me is that you can see a scope shadow, the reticle illumination is duplicated AND MOVING, which looks like there has been an actual scopecam. But also and there is completely unrealistic distortion around the edges + no chromatic aberration which should have been there, if this was a cheap second focal plane scope. Also target tracking is way too smooth for the distance and magnification. There has not been ONE genuine sniper scene recreated in a movie EVER.

  • I havent watched the killer but what was said about the camera and action being unstable during the fight scene was pretty cool. It would be neat to see as a fight scene progresses the cinematography becomes more and more stable along with who ever is winning getting a grasp on the fight. That has to have been something done in a movie before

  • A great editing example on the disruption of the subjectivity that I personally really love is from Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, at the very beginning where the film starts with a strong classical music while the actors are getting ready to go out, creating a subtle and seducing warm atmosphere only to realize later that the music was playing from the character's record player in their room. The music cuts off immediately as if to make you realize that everything you will see can not be the real truth.

If you're looking for topics to cover for future videos, how about something that covers colour saturation, how to correctly use it and when saturation is used when it isn't needed. I ask because I see some movies where colour is used as an element for a purpose/artistic choice because it's important ie; Bladerunner 2049, Grand Budapest Hotel etc, versus when colour saturation is ramped way up when it isn't needed to be/doesn't serve a purpose ie; Jurassic World, Red Right Hand, The Beekeeper (Jason Statham). Thanks!

  • The problem with subjectivity vs objectivity in a picture or motion picture is that you are never fully in the world of one or the other. Everything that a camera points at and films is objectively there and is a document of that particular time and space. However, subjectivity come into play because their are limitations as to what a camera can see. It is not so much what is in frame which is subjective but everything which is exclude, outside the forced border of the lense. Once you take the pictures and begin to order them through editing, you bring another layer of subjectivity, not by adding shots together, but by adding more barriers to what was originally there. What I mean to say is that it makes what was initially confined to a specific moment in time and space (which many would refer to as a document) and reduces it to a greater extent in order to remove excess meaning that the image is tightly constrained to a narrative. So in that sense, all film is objectively created and subjectively rendered. CGI only adds to the subjectivity, as it is an after effect of the initial process of documenting an image, which in itself cannot escape subjective reality.

We don't get to see what's going on out the main characters Pov and to me that's not a very good way to make a film.
