All I need to know is that Africa is orange and that anywhere cold is blue.
It's temperature difference

And Mexico! That’s yellow
I love that Film Riot still teaching basics yet diving deep enough so you always learn something new. Truly a wonderful channel that has aged well
Thanks so much!
yeah i learned why you need to put the LUT after the color space conversion! totally makes sense that it's because the lut is rec.709 (most probably are)
I agree ❤️
True. I've always seen people playing with those dials without knowing what they do and i stayed confused. Seeing the thumb and title of this vid i feel like im home
Very educational video.
I'm 14 and I just wanna say thanks for teaching me 80% of what I know about filmmaking. You've truly inspired me to pursue what I love the most and I'll be forever grateful!
14 ey? You're off to a good start! When I was 14 I was making silly stickman animations in 8 colours on Deluxe Paint. A Video camera was economically out of sight. post production options were not even on the horizon!!! Create and Enjoy!
When i was 14 i was doing nothing really nothing you guys are really very ambitious at very young age. Keep going Good luck
When I was 14, I still chewed my playground stick. You are really more mature
when i was 14 i didnt even know what my camera settings were for, keep up that grind 💪
Dang, I started watching filmriot when I was 14, and that's like 12 years ago
The fact that this video is freely available is insane
Yea! It's even more mind blowing if you get to know it actually consists of 1s and 0s. How's that even possible? 😊
My head hurts.
It is weird how effective this video is. I was completely clueless to how most of this stuff works. But one video later and now everything clicks into place! Great job!
Absolutely loved this. It's so hard to find tutorials for beginners that don't assume you're already super familiar with a program or process
Adobe softwares are out of my budget as a film student, so I decided to use Resolve for everything edit wise, and I'm so glad you guys are teaching the basics in such an easy and informative way!
Is it still limited to 720p export?
@@cicolas_nage oh yh 100% but for some reason I keep getting detected and Adobe asks me to download the original version, which is unfortunate.
do you drink coffee every day, my student cost for the entire adobe suite is 19 bucks a month :)
@@patrickmacisaac4991 I live in Brazil and our economy isn't the best, so for a broke student, the cost for Adobe programs is just slightly more expensive than I can afford monthly. I could pay for it, but I would be spending more money than I should
Gotcha friend, good news is that the coffee there is plentiful and cheap :)
So much information. My head hurts. But thanks for not making the videos extra long. You get straight to the point and that's why we love you so much.
This is the best explanation of color space, LUTS, and or RAW I have seen so far. Color 101, I learned a lot from this even though I have been doing video for awhile now. There is still a lot more to learn. Great job!
That was amazing. This helped me a lot to understand what the whole process looks like! A very well not-confusing overview! Arigato Film Riot, as always! :)
Great video! Another use of LUTs in post-production is having a preview of the final look of a shot while working in the VFX stage. Compositing software like Nuke have a built-in quick preview using an imported LUT, so the artist can see how the shot will look in the final edit, without changing the original scan.
I love color grading! Sometimes I feel beginners may overlook this, but for me, I've been grading footage since my first short film. I don't know why exactly, but it was important for me to grade to set the right mood. Even back then I shot in log😂 this is a great video! I hope new film makers learn a lot from it!
one of the best breakdowns of a bloody complex subject. Nice effects to show the viewers whats actually going on. Great work!
Shooooooot, that is what any training should be, short, well paced, informative, interesting and rich. RESPECT SIR!
Such a helpful video! I’ve been editing for over 8 years and still learned quite a bit from this! Keep ‘em coming! 🤠
I used to watch this channel when I was 12 and I was getting into video production. I dropped that hobby for some other interests and now I'm 24 I've picked it up again. I'm astounded by the leap in quality. Well done
I'm glad to see another basics update on this! I still use principals I learned from you like 10 years ago when I color my projects! ~Trav
You guys are simply amazing. I have been following you all for probably a decade now, and I am still learning new things from you. Thank you for helping me be a jack of all trades in video haha! Your videos have played a huge part in my career path.
Thanks so much for this in depth guide! Super helpful 💚 even as a professional I love going back and learning the science, theory, and basics to refine my knowledge. Loved all the visual examples, graphics and animations 🙌🏽
probably the best quick look at color grading i have seen. well done. very helpful.
I feel like learning to use scopes is essential for those of us that don't have $30,000 to drop on a color-accurate monitor.

I have watched several videos on color grading and this by for is the clearest and most informative one that I have seen. Best believe I am subscribing.
I'd love to hear more about the color correction process. I always find my fingers twisting during that phase, when two cameras simply won't look the same. And I'm not always sure what to pull and what histogram to look at.
FilmRiot does it again, these guys are the best KZhead channel for any Filmmaker. There's always something to learn and they always know how to teach something difficult, the easy way for us to understand.
4 months later I’m watching this and know most of it but still hear a few great explanations which makes it easier for me to communicate with clients. Thanks! FR is the best!
One of the best explanations of color grading I have seen yet. Thanks for this.
Thank you for this awesome introduction to color from camera sensor to screen. The most complete overview I have viewed with the breadth to understand the scope And enough depth to understand the main steps and the key aspects of each one. Great work. Thank you.
This is - by far - the best video about color grading in KZhead. Chapeau!
Film Riot continues to make the most intimidating aspects of film-making easier to understand and its all inspiring, keep it up guys you're legends
This video is packed and amazing. Kudos to the entire team.
Great stuff! Your horror LUTs are my absolute favorite. I've used them on so many projects!
This is amazing. In one video, you’ve summarized and conveyed what took me weeks of toying around and googling/YTing to understand. Wish I saw this video a long time ago!
Exactly! I had the feeling that I would need to go through the endless KZhead realm myself, but luckily I stumbled across this video here on my second day of research. This just saved so much of my time 😁
Perfect timing, exactly what I needed for my upcoming project!
this was actually a good overview. Most poeple or vids fail to describe it in such a easy to grasp manner while keeping it correct!
Thanks a lot for this, it certainly helps a lot to get a 101 on CG to get the basic idea of all this stuff. Great video and thanks for sharing this!
Yeah, it's useful with CG to use aces. I just wish blender had that color space built it😂
This was amazing! So much information delivered efficiently. I've done color correction before, but there was a lot of new info here (new to me, at least). Thank you! :)
Great content here, especially for someone like me who rather see and hear it that read it in a manual. Film Riot was the first KZhead channel for filmmaking I subscribed to and is still great to this day!!!
Such complex things explained it so simple way! Truly an amazing explanation
Thanks for sharing all this value. Especially for me the raw and log stuff! Great, keep going!
One of the best overviews on color correction I've seen
Subscribed. This was INCREDIBLE. Thank you.
Love the fast pace. Great video. Thanks
I've been watching film riot since I first started my obsession years ago. Love you guys for all you do. Thanks for sticking around. I feel like we're close friends. Love ya!
You are the best. I’ve been learning so many things with your channel since 2014.
This video answered so many questions! Loved every second of it! Subbed for sure!
Ok .. this video KILLED IT ... so packed with so much useful info.. specially for me as I'm the proud owner of a DaVinci studio Liscence.. looking forward to more color grading tuts.. and again thank you sooo much for this clarification on the different tools and what they are for..
I'm currently at 12:15 and this was by far the best explanation of color grading, especially in DaVinci Resolve for me. Thank you so much!
This was EXTREMELY helpful. Really appreciate it y'all!!
Funny, that shot from Blade Runner in the thumbnail was done in camera with lighting and filters. Sure there was some enhancement in the grade but the Orginal image in camera was actually so orange that they found some sort of artefact in the dark shadows and called Arri how also didn't know about this. This was a case where Deakins actually pushed the Alexa to places its never been before. Also for anybody interested in what color grading was like before computers, look up: Color Timing with Printer Lights. It's a really simple and intuitive process and there's a printer point feature in DaVinci Resolve that you can also control thro the touch bar on MacBooks. It's crazy to me how many different looks can be created from such a simple tool. Nolan, PTA, and Tarantino all exclusively color time with printer lights, the first two actually photochemically and not in a digital intermediate.
I really enjoyed your video and the explanation of the processes was brilliant to a novice such as myself. I can't wait to see the next one. I now have a much better understanding of how it works. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this, was about to make a mistake and shoot the rest of my film in RAW, even though everything has been working fine so far. I don't think my desktop will handle RAW very well but was listening to some advice. Shooting again in 3 days, you've saved me a headache 🙌🙏
Thank you for getting to the point and not giving 1 minute of information in a 10 minute format. Great work!
I've been looking for a video like this for years! Thank you
This was just pure amazing info! Gonna need to watch this a couple of time, but learned SO MUCH! Thank you!
Great explanation.👏👏 As a beginner it's always intimidating while looking at all those graphs & adjustment tools. This will help a lot to understand the purpose of each adjustment tool & conversion standards.
The most efficient color grading tutorial I've ever seen. Thanks guys!
Incredible! Seriously another banger! Keep this amazing stuff up.
My God! This video was loaded with all the info that I really needed. Thank you so much.
only a minute in, but i really apricate how visually appealing this is, interesting and INFORMATIVE. It makes it easier to watch versus other "colour grading videos" that spend 20mins going over multiple steps (very dry). Thanks!
The fact that I have to do every job on my projects, this was one of the most important videos I’ve seen this channel push out. I will definitely have to watch this again for reference.
THANK YOU RYAN, I've been meaning to dabble a bit in color grading, but it seems like such a daunting task
This whole video is fire 🔥. Right on, Ryan
Genuinely a great video. No fluff. Straight to it
This was the most informative video that gave a great overview of color grading. Thank you
Thank You Film Riot! This teaches mostly everything about technical side of color grading. Also can you guys do a in depth aces workflow tutorials? That would be a great help!
Great video!! Can't wait on the next video of color grading
Excellent video. It was great to have a refresher on this as I needed to do some color correction and have not had to in awhile.
Obvious that a ton of work went into making this video, hope to see you guys prosper this year!
I used to watch you guys as a kid excited to learn how to film and edit , glad to see you’re still putting out content I forgot to sub since I used to just search for you
This may be the single most useful video on the internet. Thank you.
Thank you so much for making this, it helped a lot
As an electronic musician & novice camera operator who just wants to make better visuals for my music channel, this video is like 100 "aha's" per minute. Clears up so many questions I didn't even know I had. Shooting RAW is amazing when you're a noob because you have so many ways to fix the mistakes you didn't know you were making and because it just looks so damn good. That's why I just bought a 16TB hard drive, probably the first of many LOL
This was a pretty educative video, loved every bit of it. Thank you! 💯
you've covered most of FAQ we ask!! Thank you!
This is one of the most informative videos on color grading I have seen. Thank you so much!
Such a good video, thank you for sharing all of this!!
This video is badass. So much info, so much clarity. The scales fall from my eyes. Now I know what my brother was talking about before he flunked out of film school.
Such a comprehensive explanation. Well done sir.
This was amazing mate !.. Searching hrs online for all the stuff would take 3-4 days and this video made this possible in less than hour...Thanks you so much...liked, comment and subscribed
thank you for this! I finally understand how it all works now!
I love the pacing of this video. Thank you!
