  • Great video! Another use of LUTs in post-production is having a preview of the final look of a shot while working in the VFX stage. Compositing software like Nuke have a built-in quick preview using an imported LUT, so the artist can see how the shot will look in the final edit, without changing the original scan.

  • Funny, that shot from Blade Runner in the thumbnail was done in camera with lighting and filters. Sure there was some enhancement in the grade but the Orginal image in camera was actually so orange that they found some sort of artefact in the dark shadows and called Arri how also didn't know about this. This was a case where Deakins actually pushed the Alexa to places its never been before. Also for anybody interested in what color grading was like before computers, look up: Color Timing with Printer Lights. It's a really simple and intuitive process and there's a printer point feature in DaVinci Resolve that you can also control thro the touch bar on MacBooks. It's crazy to me how many different looks can be created from such a simple tool. Nolan, PTA, and Tarantino all exclusively color time with printer lights, the first two actually photochemically and not in a digital intermediate.
