  • One thing I will point out from reading you guys reactions is,I was too harsh on Frontiers. I still have my opinions about the overall look,mechanics and gameplay of that game but through seeing your comments I realised there were actually some scenes I missed that DID use music effectively to add to the story. A lot of the songs did feel kind of bland but rewatching scenes with Tails or Sage,I can admit I was wrong that there were some pretty cool scenes. Most people respectfully pointed this out and I appreciate that a lot❤. Still growing as a video essayist so the feedback is not going unnoticed!

Crush 40 is are in my top 5 artists of all time because in addition to the rockin sound and singing, their lyrics can inspire and apply to so many situations in any ones life. Honestly, some of their entire albums could be Anthems in their own right. Great Work dude. Wish Sonic keeps that awesome aspect of itself.

    • Yeah this video sounds like it missed everything about Frontiers. He says it’s too safe, “un-Sonic”, no themes, no story, not mature. When everything about Frontiers is like the opposite of that? Frontiers is the most “Sonic” game we’ve had since Black Knight. It’s risky (in good and bad ways), themes of lost culture are *very* obvious, literally every character in the game except Sonic goes through a major arc that leaves them changed by the end of the game, and it’s honestly the most mature Sonic himself has ever acted. (Maybe a bit too mature imo, but still.) He says the normal themes of friendship and freedom aren’t woven into the music anymore, but if you look at the lyrics to Find Your Flame, I’m Here, or One Way Dream, you’ll see how untrue that is. I don’t understand people who love games like Unleashed, yet dislike Frontiers, because they are so incredibly similar. Listen to “Dear My Friend” from Unleashed, and “Dear Father” from Frontiers, and tell me how these games can’t be seen in the same light. Like yeah, I get not liking Cyberspace for nostalgia baiting, but that is literally 1% of this game. I have over 100 hours in Frontiers, and I have at max spent like 2 of those in Cyberspace. (You can technically skip ALL of Cyberspace if you don’t care about 100%-ing and just wanna grind Big’s fishing, which I think is pretty fun in-of-itself tbh.) It’s not a perfect game by any means, but it’s definitely good. Not some soulless Breath of The Wild clone, like some people make it out to be.

    • Same, like are you gonna tell me that UNDEFEATABLE, BREAK THROUGH IT ALL, FIND YOUR FLAME AND I'M HERE aren't story through music if open your heart and live and learn are? Just because a game has a different direction to the previous games DOESN'T MEAN that there aren't the same things from before, that's extremely disingenuous. I am not the biggest fan of frontiers because the gameplay is overly repetitive in a lot of areas and doesn't have that free flow of generations, unleashed and the classics, but I can tell that it's a lot better than some of the hold forward Sims we've gotten before. Just because a game isn't 100% what you want doesn't mean you can't appreciate what it did right (I mean really if this guy is saying he appreciated the story of '06, a story with a multitude of problems but doesn't appreciate either shadow '05 or frontiers despite those stories being similar in how they are problematic yet having a lot of good elements honestly makes this argument misguided)

  • Wait, I don’t get it. Why is it that we hate on frontiers for being mid but we should regard flawed games like heroes, black knight and 06 as better just because of a preference of soundtrack? How is it frontiers is playing it safe if it introduce a new open world style gameplay? How is it that people don’t understand that the game was how it was because the team had no money?

    @Frank-zb7zh@Frank-zb7zh12 күн бұрын
    • Here's my take. Sonic Frontiers is "safe" in the sense that the Cyberspace levels often have near-identical level geometry to previous Sonic games. Also, they often reuse themes from previous Sonic games, too. Also, the "new open-world gameplay" isn't even really that new to the industry, as it shares a lot of similiarities with Ubisoft's open world design philosophy, and Super Mario Odyssey, but sadly worse. The most original thing about it, is it has Sonic the Hedgehog's speed based gameplay in it, which changes the way you play in it. Also, it isn't even really open-world, as there's a distinct lack of interconnectivity between the islands, so it feels more like just very open levels (open zones, if you will), then anything else. I don't look down on Sonic Frontiers simply because it's mid. I look down on Sonic Frontiers because if you ask me, the transition to a more open level design format was not handled that well, with too many collectibles that don't really change gameplay that much, and end up breaking the pace of the game way too much if you try and collect them all. Tired of the unoriginality, which is why I didn't care for Cyberspace much. The game is also not that challenging. Also, didn't care for the OST much (though there are definitely bangers), but that’s more of a personal preference thing. I just really wanted "buttrock" instead lol The story and characters are fine, and they are indeed a step up from the Pontac and Graff era of Sonic games, however I noticed that Sonic's personality seemed a little bit more...toned down. Not much in terms of cockiness. It just seemed more like...generic good guy protag for kids most of the time. There, I explained it.

  • I agree that Sonic music is always a strong point of the franchise and can be a deconstruction of the story and characters but I would also say that Frontiers has these elements as well without being safe such exploring a new gameplay style, having a more melancholy story that develops each character, showing Sonic's heroism and personality, having music tell a somber story of ancient beings while also having great boss fight music that has tells a story like Find Your Flame being about Sonic seeing the strength in Tails and wants him to be at his best.

    • I'm not done watching the video yet, so I'll come back and change this if I feel differently afterwards, but I'm convinced Sonic fans just don't WANT to like new additions to the franchise. After 2006 it became popular to hate this franchise while romanticizing the past. If this guy's argument is that the music in Frontiers doesn't tell a story that addresses the bright qualities Sonic stories tend to highlight then I really don't see him selling me on this idea... because the musical story telling is one of the things I 100% loved about the game before I even started listening to other people's opinions on the game. Sonic fans go into games looking for things to be upset about. It's exhausting.

  • To add on to the Sonic 06 section, Silver's theme also samples and uses Green Hilk from the very first sonic game as a backbone for the song. • I feel like ragging on Frontiers for a music direction that fits with the more muted, melancholy tone they were clearly trying to hit at with the entire game, as appose to Superstars where most of it's music is just nails on a chalkboard, is a really missed opportunity. Frontiers may be playing it safe, but Superstars really led under the impression of "it's Classic Sonic so who gives a shit??" and they proceed to make the most ear-grating soundtrack ever composed for a Sonic game.

    @collectivesplonk@collectivesplonk11 күн бұрын
    • It's very clear you only listened to a few of the tracks from Superstars at most. Just because a few songs use the same instruments as Sonic 4 doesn't mean the whole soundtrack is bad. Also you're really calling Superstars the worst soundtrack when games like Sonic Eraser and Sonic Chronicles exist? And muted and melancholic doesn't fit a series known for being fast paced and energetic. I'll take even the worst music in Superstars over the dull music in Frontiers. • I have to disagree with your points on frontiers. While yes it is less than the others, the story is way more serious as the world shows. It’s barren and the music reflects that in the somber tone most of the ost has. When you are in a boss battle with the titans, the music reflects how it feels to Sonic being super. Take Find Your Flame for instance. The lyrics show he is fighting for his friends and doing all of this for them. Just because the music isn’t all in your face most of the time doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a story to tell.

  • When so many of the hardcore fans are obsessed over how Sonic controls in gameplay or how his worlds look in graphics, it's easy to forget some people, even if just a few, stick around mainly for the characters, the stories being told, and how they're told. This fanbase often chooses to agree in that Sonic's music being great is the norm, but it's hardly ever discussed what makes it so great, or why it's so memorable... and giving it some deeper thought, I reckon you're right about something, the stories they're trying to tell is what ties it all together. This fictional blue cartoon rat definitely knew how to make people feel real stuff, and without that, I wonder how many of us would care about this franchise currently... Even if it was just the music what you were aiming to dissect, I appreciate your devotion to explaining the meaning behind every song, and the narrative impact it had by proxy. This video feels like it doubles as a "why his music matters" and "why his story matters", so I can see myself coming back to this a couple of times, at least to refresh my memory of it if not also to explain my point with something better than words of my own... which I'll do regardless, but I digress.

  • Endless possibility is probably my favorite theme song in the series. It encapsulates everything Sonic stands for. It also made me hopeful for the future of the series after unleashed. Sadly I was disappointed on that front. But I've since moved on from Sonic. Well the games anyway. But I will say that while I like the films, I wish they would've incorporated more Sonic music in the soundtrack.

    @suttonfreeland6368@suttonfreeland63685 сағат бұрын
  • Awesome video! I always love when people talk about Sonic music and give it the love it deserves. Gotta say, though, the title of this video is annoyingly clickbaity and really left a bad taste in my mouth going in. Fortunately, It's actually a pretty good breakdown of the musical history of Sonic (didnt know about the Crush 40 name thing lol) As for the message... I personally feel its a little contrived and unnecessary. Like, its more of a music history video and a seperate writing critique, that are being loosely dovetailed together. If the story gets better the music will adapt. In addition, Sonic games still do use leitmotif quite a bit (i.e. Team Sonic Racing Character Ultimates, Sonic Mania hard boiled heavies and metal sonic theme, Sonic Lost World Final Boss has fragments of the Eggman theme etc.), have songs with lyrics which reflect the story and situation (i.e. one way dream, break through it all) and audiovisual storytelling (i.e. Sonic Frontiers has a cybernetic theme so the majority of the tunes are some form of EDM, whereas the overworld music is prinarily orchestral and written in movements which build on eachother as you progress ). Thats just my 2 cents though, hope this video does well!

  • "We didn't see much of an inter-game identity being built up during the Adventure Era." I kind of disagree? Sonic's "theme" from SA1 was used when he first appears in SA2, and more importantly? The genre of music that Crush 40 brought became the connective thread _in and of itself._

  • I have zero music knowledge or talent whatsoever, but being a fan or Progressive Rock/Metal helped me develop my "Musician's Ear" to what it is today. And even though i haven't played every Sonic game out there, (Some I never will touch period. ) I will always appreciate the risk taking, adventurous, and experimental side of the music aspect, and someday I hope to learn some of the Adventure Era songs on Rocksmith. Now as far as the meta era side of the music, I personally want nothing to do with because of the games they're associated with. Sure there's banger here and a jingle there, but it feels like the music side is playing it safe too by making the song just primarily whimsical as if it were a Disney movie or trying to appeal to Nintendo fans like the games they were built for. And I'm sorry to anyone who gets offended, but not even Forces' soundtrack could save that trainwreck. In fact, it's just as forgettable as the game itself. And then there's Frontiers... I will say that soundtrack along the Final Horizon soundtrack is the most diverse amount of music put into a Sonic game ever. (Kronos Islands' songs have been clutch along with the Music Box Version of Bury The Light from DMC5 to help my 1 year old son sleep at night.) And despite me not being into metalcore bands like Sleeping With Sirens, and to this day I say they fumbled the bag with the vocals of both versions of I'm Here, the main theme and the boss battles themes are epic and I had only dreamed about Sonic's music having heavier sounds, but the I did not care for Knuckles's theme and the EDM just slightly oversaturates the soundtrack. I'm not even gonna touch on how I felt nothing for the story especially for both endings.. At this point I feel like the franchise will never get past this mediocre, nostalgic, everything is canon, fast friends forever forever, play it safe mentality, and slowly more and more people are slowly coming to realize that the Meta Era Didn't Die. They Just Had A Rebranding Phase.

  • Honestly I see your point but I also feel you're highly exagerating things. Frontiers is a good game with some issues sure but out of all of those the music isn't one and seeing so many comments that say "yeah you're right" and talk about a "new perspective" of open your heart (since when? Most fans knew your points already) and saying how Frontiers OST lacks elements and meaning for the history and characters (again, since when? It was the most praised part of this game when it came out and still is even with the more calmed down songs outside of the bosses) while also ignoring the history just makes me feel this video and the comments are very disingenuous and pointing non-issues as if they were issues. And now we have people saying frotiers sucks and is mediocre when it is what put Sonic on the map again? What year is this, 2005-15 where everything Sonic-related is put on the spotlight and insulted, passing it as criticism, from "fans" who hate it isn't like the old stuff and haters who go "Sonic was always mediocre"? Like, sorry because it clearly wasn't your intention but this is what it felt like to me. I saw your pinned comment but still I can't just watch this and feel good without saying what I think, you know?

  • I'm fine enough to admit that Sonic Frontiers isn't a perfect game, i don't think any Sonic game really knows HOW to be perfect, but i'm really tired of the mindset behind Sonic nowadays that if a game they make isn't perfect then people can't like it because Sega isn't doing right by us. Did we forget about how they had Ian Flynn write the story? Did we forget about the fact they finally introduced extra playable characters and announced it not like, two months after the game's initial launch? Did we forget about the fact the early trailers looked abysmal and they actually fixed it as best they could because people complained? Did we forget they delayed it a whole-ass year or two, MAYBE EVEN MORE that we hadn't heard of, because they were aware of the issue with not giving games long enough development cycles? Did we forget about the fact that canonically, this game _is_ Sonic Adventure 3? How is Sega _not_ doing right by the fans? Frontiers is a game of perfectly reasonable quality, it has a top-tier soundtrack that seems to only catch flak because it's not as energetic or head-boppy as the rest of the series in spite of being the most thematically accurate soundtrack in the series maybe ever, the most interesting story and character personalities since A LONG TIME before the dry era of the 2010s, a genuinely well-developed set of overworld stages decorated, for the most part [chaos island...] pretty well with the ancient technology and structures for environmental storytelling? It feels like Frontiers is getting dragged down by games like Forces having existed _at all,_ and for games like Superstars, which while not _amazing_ quality, and kinda inconsistent, is still far from a _bad_ game? What happened to us? It used to be that pretty much every Sonic fan still believed in the series and would call out _bad_ content and not mix it in with the content we enjoyed, the content that mattered to us, and the only people dragging down the good in the series were people who didn't even play it, who decided they had the right to have an opinion because Sonic '06 existed. Now? Now _we_ can't stop dragging down what good is left in the series from not even objectively bad games but just in the face of other entries _barely_ touching mediocrity and inconsistency.
