It's here! A video I've been wanting to make for a long long time, Sonic the Hedgehog 2! I've made fun of how long I made the Sonic 1 video, so imagine my surprise when this one ended up being nearly twice as long. And WITHOUT all the random tangents talking about things other than Sonic 1.

Honestly I'm glad we're getting shorter and more varied segments with the bird avatar, even if they may take more time to make because of the nature of animating something however crudely instead of filming live action, because good god those were a pace breaker and the amount of "lore" just bloated the videos. Especially the compilation reviews, they can easily have from 20 to 30 minutes gutted from them if you were to take out the live action segments, with little lost in terms of substance.

The Wing Fortress launcher not sending you over the pit isn't a glitch. Sonic 1 and 2 have an air speed cap that's active whenever you hold left or right on the d-pad. That's the same reason the spring in Emerald Hill 2 sent you into that enemy. If you let go of the d-pad, the Wing Fortress launchers and diagonal springs will send you much further.
You can even see that was what Cybershell was doing in his clip, with Sonic being in his standing pose while being launched instead of running.
Um, that in _itself_ IS a glitch. Holding FORWARD shouldn't SLOW DOWN your character. Duh. Yes, once you get it, you can adapt to it, but it goes against all intuition, and as Retropolis Zone said, first attempts matter, so don't "git gud" or "skill issue" or even "real difficulty" me or anyone else about it, especially since everyone's time is limited. Another unfortunate consequence of Sonic being made fast.

Time for some random Sonic 2 technical trivia! 29:33 Tails' hitbox actually doesn't shrink when he crouches! Why? No idea. This means Tails is actually taller than Sonic when they're both crouching... However, Sonic's crush detection hitbox actually doesn't shrink when he crouches either, so in this particular spot it wouldn't make a difference, and he would die too. It's only his damage hitbox that actually shrinks. 9:08 and 34:14 are both caused by the same quirk: You actually get launched a shorter distance if you're holding down the direction you're being launched in, because of the air speed cap. This was fixed in the mobile remake/Origins, as well as in Sonic 3 (and even Knuckles in Sonic 2). This was probably something the devs intended to fix before release, considering the level design punishes you pretty hard for not knowing about it, but considering the insane crunch the last few weeks were under, it slipped by.
It's a ground speed cap, too. Yuck. Also even many who know about ground rolling, including it working as an attack, don't know you can still speed it up or slow it down with the D-pad horizontals.

The most standout thing about Sonic 2 that I remember is the fact that my partner playing as Tails was either not keeping up and thus being a non factor in stages, or running past me when I decided to slow down and thus activating every trap and collapsible platform possible...

I wasn’t expecting this but my goodness is this a sweet surprise. Thanks rad, been dealing with a lot of stress with college finals and hayfever has been a pain, you always cheer me up. Sonic mega collection was also how I first experienced playing all the classic sonics, (cause got an original Xbox at my gramps place ever since I was young) didn’t get through a lot cause I sucked but still had fun. Also man… the mega collection music menus, never gets old. 💙

The Sonic robot in Sonic 2 is actually Mecha Sonic Mk I. The one in Sonic 3 & Knuckles is Mecha Sonic Mk II. Sonic Adventure actually has a Mk III version, but it's just a background decoration at Eggman's base in the Mystic Ruins.
Mk II will always be called turbo mecha sonic to me

I mean, as someone who enjoys the movie, I can see why someone wouldnt. Tails and Sonic barely had build up to their friendship, Jim Carrey Robotnik had hit or miss jokes (tho his energy is still very much appreciated), Sonic's pop culture references get a bit obnoxious, Sonic is hella nerfed from the first movie and is always getting his ass beat, and of course, that wedding scene. What's kind of crazy is that he preferred the first movie. That's a take I've never heard until I saw his live streams 😅
I mean i prefer Heroes over Adventure 2 too, because i dont have nostalgia blocking my brain from seeing the MASSIVE Flaws in Adventure 2. Like yeah most Sonic Stages are great and half of Shadow Stages are also good, but ALL Tails Stages are Trash, 90 % of Knuckles Stages are not built for his Moveset and the Bosses have a lot of jank in them too. If you can deal with that fine, but i take heroes then thank you.

the only difference I'm aware of between Sonic and Tails in Sonic 2 is that Sonic can duck to shield himself the chemical drops the boss attacks you with in Chemical Plant act 2, and Tails doesn't have that benefit for some reason
it's because tails's object hitbox doesn't actually shrink when he ducks, so the hurtwater will always hit him before it hits the ground yes, the reason why it doesn't hurt sonic is because ducking makes him too short for the water to hit him before splattering off the ground. that projectile's hitbox is _genuinely_ more fucked-up than you can imagine, it's _that_ bad
It’s because Sonic’s hitbox gets smaller when he crouches but Tails’ doesn’t for some reason. And for the chemicals in the boss, it’s because their hitbox is for some reason above it rather than on it.

🤡 Thinking of special stages, the one that's haunted me for years is the DS title Sonic Rush. I was definitely an unskilled little kid at the time, but I remember the last one was such a bastard to get. You needed to do well in the stage itself, but then also do a join-the-dots thing repeatedly to pass it, and I swear some of them went by so fast I didn't have chance to read the numbers, never mind draw between them all. And it didn't help that I was on the OG DS at the time, with the relatively dim and small screen. Seriously, when my sister got a DS lite and I saw the brightness I was so surprised. Also as you mentioned the 50/60hz thing, my first Sonic game was Sonic 1 and 2 on the older 8-bit console, also in 50hz. When I got older and made it onto the internet, I found out my entire Sonic foundation was "wrong". Green Hill zone's music doesn't play that fast, what's with this OST? My Sonic 2 didn't start in Emerald Hill, it was some desert place with minecarts! The first boss wasn't even Robotnik, and in fact he saved me from a lava-y death! Stage 2's boss was some robot bird! How did everyone else get to play as that yellow guy in the splash screens?
Sonic 2 gave us Tails, and that’s just another great thing about it on top of already being a good sequel

Big fan of this blended commentary with footage in the background into sudden reactions to what’s happening in the background footage, which is especially really well done in jokes like the one about how easy it is to dodge Eggman’s hammer immediately preceding footage and audio of tails getting hit by the hammer. On that note, the timing of jokes is just really well done in this video. You’ve always been funny and good with timing/anticipation, but this video especially knocks that out of the park. Also, great job with the pacing. This video is over half an hour, but it doesn’t drag on at all. Great video!!!

@corerupted Feel like it had the most consistently good level design out of the classics too. Sonic 3 has great level themes and music but the levels really start to slog with all the tedious bs they start to put in post mushroom hill.
It's true, Sonic Speed Simulator has both Green Hill and Emerald Hill and they do in fact look different. It also had Lost Valley from Forces which if you're paying attention is actually Green Hill again, and also Hill Top. I don't know what they were thinking tbh, that used to be 4 of the 5 worlds

Honestly the best part about Sonic 2 for me is the Special Stages. I liked playing through the game over and over until I mastered them, it makes finally getting Super Sonic and the good ending more satisfying. Same goes for a lot of other Sonic games. Idk maybe I'm just a gaming masochist.

Casino Night's background specifically is one of my favourite pieces of design ever, the starry sky and glittering city lights is just beautiful. When I first got a phone it was my background... and over a decade later it is back to being my background again XD It is a massive shame they couldn't replicate that beauty on the 3DS.
