Interview with @peterwindsor talking F1 news and F1 updates, we discuss whether Mercedes F1 have turned a corner in the F1 2024 season, why does F1 still need safety car, why it's so hard to talk F1 without talking about politics, why Ferrari and the Carlos Sainz situation is such a messand what was the real difference between Senna and Prost.

    • Mercedes are sure to improve, but so will the other teams. They're chasing a moving target from a poor starting point. They need to find a truly radical performance improvement to leapfrog their rivals (and customers...) and, based on recent form, that looks unlikely.

  • This was great to say, thank you. I've been an avid fan of Peter Windsor for over 25 years now going back to him being on Speedvision then Speed TV. Speedvision/Speed TV held broadcasting rights to F1 back in the late 90s and early to late 2000s before being bought by Fox in the US and Peter was the main ontrack commentator/interviewer for the commentating team in the Speedvision studios. He is a wealth of F1 knowledge and even more so a F1 historian with story upon story back well into the 70s and offers a perspective like no one else I've heard and for me there is no greater single individual that I trust with my gauging and understanding of F1 than Mr. Peter Windsor. Hopefully we can see more collaborations like this in the near future.

  • As some one said below, if the cars are spread and there is an incident, VSC can end up with people driving at very high speeds near incidents that are critical Safety Car has the ability to force the field to bunch up, giving marshalls up to 2 minutes at a time on most tracks to clear incidents and debris, and also slow down extra slow in certain areas to make sure everyone comes past not at speeds like Pierre Gasly in Japan .... The key is the gaps. Without the gap they have to red flag it, which delays races I am pretty sure there is a mandate (FOM) that red flags be avoided where unnecessary to maximise viewership Also whats critical to remember, which was agreed on by the teams (which goes back to AbuDhabi 2021), is there is a mandate (either by teams or FOM) that races end rather not behind a safety car So there is clearly an agenda for racing and pausing over stopping Also with red flag, teams can fix parts, eg Lando might not win cause Redbull can replace Max's floor; and swop tyres which no one wants cause then no pitstops/strategy For a non safety car solution it simple Set a VSC speed for the leader, and one for everyone else This lets the others catch up to him, while the leader drives at a safe speed No issue with who the car picks up The only issue, F1 rules for over taken cars says they filter through. Indy style rule of sending them to the back, avoids controversies of the all cars or "all cars" from Abu Dhabi 21' plus people dont have to wait an extra lap for them to catch up

It needs to feel like the pinnacle of Racing, and the on track actions needs to be that way. You can have 1 person dominate too, you just have to have the rest of the field tight, close, racing. Anything to do with adding like push-to-pass or greater energy deployment on command is a great idea too. Put the ability to win on a drivers strategy, and choices, and it'll be amazing racing

  • Safety cars allow a Marshall to run on to a track to clean up some small debris or take a broom and sweeps up something by bunching up the pack and giving the machell about a minute of clear a track instead of red flaging the race . You cant do that if all te cars go around a bit slower and the same gap apart so you would need to red flag it . If i have seen hundreds of gp for the last 30 years where we have watched the marshals rush out quickly to shift a car and pick up some bits i am sure you and Peter have . Safety cars in the last 1/3 race shake up tyre strategy and add to the entertainment show side of things , safety car in first stint nerf the race and destroy any opportunity for different strategies. And red flags are extremely unfair to drivers that pit under virtual safety car to save a few seconds but 2 laps after the red flag comes up and every one else gets new tyres and keep track position. So virtual safety car for first stint yellows, full safe for last part and red for damaged walls and broken cars .

  • I'm not convinced regarding that Sainz Jr. thing. I mean he asked for a penalty for Perez in the first corner for what? Kind of like that time when he radioed that the car behind him was intimidating him. What!? And if Perez would have actually made the corner, where would Sainz be..? We don't know. And you talked about how RB needs to hold up the carrot for Perez for him to perform. Maybe it's similar for Sainz now, because he is out of contract. It's just that we don't know which team the carrot is. Could be RB, although I am personally confident that RB want to keep Perez if he performs, because they want to keep Verstappen. They do have such a great relationship...as long as Max keeps winning. If you know what I mean. Surely VER Sr. does not want an actually competitive driver alongside Jr.

  • "The only reason we have the safety car is to bunch the field", come on guys, the safety cars primary reason is to avoid having to stop the race when the track is unsafe to race. A virtual safety car is always preferable except for instances where the marshals need a clear gap to work. In order of preference it should be Yellow Flag, Double Yellow Flag, Virtual Safety Car, Safety Car, Red Flag. Before advancing down the list of options there should be a good reason for doing so. There was a period where it did feel like the safety car was deployed too quickly and instead of the virtual safety car. After Abu Dhabi, that seems to have been scaled back, if anything, the safety car in the more recent races hasn't been deployed quick enough, such as when Russell crashed in Australian Grand Prix, the car right in the middle of the track on its side, what was difficult about making that call? Interestingly in Miami when Verstappen hit the bollard, it looked like a virtual safety car would be needed to clear the debris from the racing line and Verstappen would have been the big beneficiary at the time had that been the case. As it was, the hazard was cleared by a couple of brave marshals, Verstappen then pitted under normal race conditions. A few laps later, when Kevin Magnussen and Logan Sargeant necessitated the deployment of the safety car, the safety car mistakenly picked up Verstappen, allowing Norris an almost free pit stop. Post-race the FIA put the decision down to a late call, missing Norris by 20 meters; with the FIA reputation in tatters others might see it differently. The way Magnussen was driving and picking up points "doing his job" how long before teams openly sacrifice a driver in order to necessitate or delay a safety car? In 2021, Abu Dhabi, Mercedes could have had Bottas stop on track and thereby prevented the sham restart procedures. Would that action have been any different to Michael Masi making up the rules?

Ferrari needed to make changes and of course they would keep Leclerc. Now, if Ferrari produce a competitive car with Lewis and Leclerc, Max has work to do, if Lewis is not there, Leclerc will be there, and if Leclerc is not there Lewis will be there, more times BOTH will be there. If Ferrari produce a dominate car, a great competition will unfold between Lewis and Leclerc, and not just a period of one man domination boring the life out of us. Of course if Newey joins Ferrari, I see Lewis wanting a good two years with him, but I don't see Lewis racing forever like Alonso. If there is a seat on offer, Alonso will be making snidey, sinister and sarcastic comments over the radio long after Lewis retires. If Newey joins Ferrari it will be because Lewis joined, and if Newey remains in Ferrari after Lewis retires boy Leclerc will have a lot to enjoy regardless. Lots of ifs, but you know.

    • This was also my reasoning behind the Lewis signing. Even though Carlos is doing great, Lewis beat Carlos in '22 and '23 in a slower car for both years. Ferrari is thinking, if we are fighting Max race-by-race and at least trying to get a constructors, Lewis is the points and consistency guy of F1, and if you're trying to win constructors and potentially drivers a Charles-Lewis combination might increase your chances of achieving both over Charles-Carlos.

  • Do you also hear ( 22.00 ) how Peter's brain is programmed in such a way that he names Max, Michael and Vettel.... but not Lewis ... wonderful to see :-) It is also so wonderfully childish to see how much both of you, as diehard Lewis fans, love to dream of a Newey who would go to Ferrari just to help your hero get back in the saddle. The very idea of the two of you here to take down Toto and the Mercedes team, while they really gave your hero the best material ever seen in the Formula 1 history, so that he could win no less than 6 world titles in a row, is just pathetic!

    • I say this since weeks, that retirement could be a real option for Newey. He's 65 now. If he want's to do anything outside F1 it's now or never.

  • 1. Sainz isn't sacked. He's gonna race for Ferrari until his contract expires 2. There are literally hundreds of reasons why Ferrari are signing Hamilton instead of Sainz. I love these Cameron / Windsor podcasts, but these Ferrari / Hamilton discussions are baffling at times...
