AFAIK, he's not from Amsterdam. Aleister Black was kayfabe from Amsterdam, Malakai is a continuation of that character, thus he's from Amsterdam.

Are you saying bands like Motorhead, Killswitch Engage, Metallica, Rob Zombie, Kilgore, Powerman 5000, etc. aren't heavy? Even he said he was getting sick of it, it was actually supposed to progress each week with even bigger wrestlers knocking on the door Samoa joe and lesnar was some possibilities but for whatever reason creative kept changing it and he was just stuck there for like 2,3 months
In the *Road to...* video he even talked about spending time in purgatory, and said he was done reading stories. I took that as a not-so-subtle jab at how he was treated on the other channel.
AEW did the smart thing of doing the total opposite. Instead of waiting for anyone to knock on his door so he can fight, he makes a beeline for a specific person and kicks the shit out of them. No nonsense, easy to understand and a good way to make someone look legit.

That's as close to perfect and fitting an entrance as I've ever seen for Malakai. If only Justin Roberts and the commentary team waited just a few seconds to start talking, let the lights go out and have him basically teleport to that top turnbuckle, way more dramatic and gives him that much more mystique

The commentators always do it they just don't know when to shut up you'd think Tony and JR would know better but more often than not its JR like his debut I don't know what his name is literally as excalbar was saying it Tony Khan honestly needs to address it with them cause its happening way to often and is one of their flaws
The announce team are literally the only thing stopping AEW from being absolute perfection in my opinion. Excalibur is the only one who I feel truly gets AEW's spirit. Tony is stuck in the 90's with his style and JR is like a fish up a tree.

Hard to remember a debut where a wrestler is made dangerous so quick and has an immediate sense of dread about him like this. Obviously hes not on the same level taker or even kane's amazing debut but it's the same.feel. it's in the ballpark and it's hard to say another debit that has made such a impact

For anyone wondering, that mask is modeled after a Wendigo which is a cursed creature from Native American mythology. It's a former human that's punished for canibalism (or sometimes for other crimes based on selfishness) and slowly turns into a monster with an insatiable appetite for human flesh.

@@TommyC-man You're right, being bit/partially eaten by a wendigo also became a way to turn into one at some point in history. Much like with other mythological creatures over time the legend changed and was adopted by other groups which in turn adapted it to fit their own narratives. The same can be said for it's appearance. In Native mythology it was described as a giant malnourished humanoid with a heart of ice. The deer + skeleton mix was a depiction that became popular in the early 20th century and has been the go to look in pop culture ever since.
Theres also very strong Nordic imagery in that head piece. It's cool looking and encourages fans to speculate. Almost like the man has a strong mind for this pro wrasslin stuff!
One of my favorite things about AEW is that they allow wrestlers to continue their story from wherever they come from and acknowledge their past hence black with his right eye

I think the mask is actually supposed to be based on skin walker/wendigo lore. From the way the antlers are to the way the character has been acting, it fits a lot.

I know lots of people would often say that Bray Wyatt could be like the next Undertaker, but I've always seen Black to be the closer one to that. He's always had that cold and sinister character that shrouds him in mystery. With more creative freedom in the future and with more push from AEW, I just hope that we'd see more of Black's potential.
Something about Malakai that just makes him special. AEW got it big with his guy. Cannot wait to see him become champion.

One of my favorite aspects of AEW is how much they put into the entrances and themes of their wrestlers. It’s a huge way for fans to connect to the wrestlers.
Saw him in Portland last Sunday. It’s incredible how quick he moves and his presence as a character. Guy is one another level.
