The Moment That Made Undertale Famous

The fight with Sans Undertale is incredibly famous. After killing his brother, Papyrus, Frisk/Chara is on their way to destroying the entire game. This fight is the thematic climax of the genocide route and all of Undertale... and it's incredible. Why is it so good? Because of buildup over the course of all previous playthoughs, incredible payoff with no disappointments, and a heartbreaking finale. Then I take a look at the apocalypse it left on the internet.

Because that's exactly what Papyrus said you could do. That's why Sans humorlessly laughs after. He's probably feeling defeated by how niave his brother truly was for thinking the best of you. It's a reminder that even the worst of humanity are deserving of a chance if they're willing to seek it. And it's a reminder for me to be optimistic. I DO believe the worst person can change. I DO believe that everyone and anyone is capable of being a good person, if they truly try. And sans himself is a reminder too. If a skeleton damned to repeat the same tragic and/or pointless paths can still find any humor or joy...then I can too.

  • Sans' mercy trick is another thematically appropriate part of the fight in its own right. I don't know about the regular enemies, but the bosses at least, have different death scenes if you play the fights through as if in pacifist until you're able to spare them, and _then_ kill them.

    @devonm042690@devonm0426904 ай бұрын
  • 15:34 I don't think saying "you're beyond forgiveness" and "he has to play dirty like this" is the right interpretation here. Afterall, tricks only work once, and since he knows we always come back after dying, dirty tricks won't do much. The only way sans can make player give up is by being so hard you just quit, not by pulling dirty tricks like Sparing him. The next line is the most important one, "if we're really friends, you won't come back". He does the opposite of making you quit out of frustration, he wants you to quit out of any feelings that may be left inside you. The same way how Papyrus wants you to "quit", albeit in a different way. He doesn't know if you won't just lie to him and continue on your murderous spree. But if you're truly sorry, you're gonna quit, and if you're truly His Friend(™), you won't come back. I believe saying he just has to "play dirty like this" is a vast oversimplification of a moment that is genuinely heartfelt.

    @kuba4ful@kuba4ful5 ай бұрын
    • What I meant by playing dirty is that he simply bypasses a lot of the rules of the game that work in your favor. For example, invincibility frames, which give you a bunch of time after getting hit to get out of there. By the established laws of Undertale, he should have invincibility frames too, but he just sort of... doesn't, which is why I call it "cheating." And yeah, it's an oversimplification, but the video is already 35 minutes long, I didn't want it to be an hour. I had to leave some stuff out or we would be here for ages. You're correct, though.

      @thehayze259@thehayze2595 ай бұрын
    • @@thehayze259 You've made the point about playing dirty a few times more in the video, when mentioning stuff like attacking in menu, or frame damaging attacks. Whcih is why I felt mentioning it another time in a moment that has more heartfelt undertones, is an oversimplification that kinda hurts the entire video's quality. Or maybe it just rubbed me the wrong way, cause I felt it to be one of the more important scenes in the entire fight. If you didn't want to get in details for that scene, then that's fine, but I think it'd be better if you skipped it altogether, rather than list it as yet another instance of sans playing dirty.

    • If the KR does stand for karma then it makes sans even more deep. Because, he could of tried to stop you before you killed everyone but maybe he couldn’t. Maybe his attacks are only powerful enough to harm you once you reach level 19

      @IsThatAThaiName@IsThatAThaiName4 ай бұрын
    • @@kuba4ful It could be both, though. Sans is intentionally disceiving the player by making them think he is sparable, making the player think that sparing him might give a different ending or even just new dialogue and punishing that curiosity with a game over (which is sort of the genocide route in a nutshell - the game is saying you've already seen the best it has to offer and that you should move on now). Sans does then take the opportunity to plead with the player on the grounds of their past friendship (after a little deserved taunting), but I think his initial intent is a simple attempt at tricking the player to make sure they keep losing as long as possible and get discouraged enough to quit.

  • What I genuinely love in this fight is that technically all of these rules in the battle are totally legal because of other examples of the game it also references many other characters for example, (oh boy this going to be long) papyrus is one of the few fights where the box moves when you move, on the last attack when you jump so high the box itself has to expand just to keep you visible. Asriel is the only character that does damage without really any i frames, they are much shorter in his final attack, Asgore upgrades his attacks as the fight goes on, which is what Sans does overtime. Sans is able to kill you with the spare mechanic because betrayal kills are a hidden game mechanic where if an enemy is spare able, you kill them in one hit. Flowey attacks you even when you’re healing or fighting him in the omega fight. Even with the new rules, the original rules still apply somewhat. Sans cancel attacks and chain them together because he stuns you slightly with the teleport, if you want to be serious, you do this too later when you kill Flowey as you stun him on the first hit as he’s not entirely dead. Then you keep killing him afterwards as he can’t act. The fact that Sans can do all of this and it all feels somewhat familiar makes it go even further.

  • Some notes that Hayze didn't touch upon: Sans does 1 damage per frame and dodges every hit despite having 1 hp. The player likely has equipped the Real Knife and HeartLocket, each of which are the best armor and weapon in the game in terms of STATS, but no benefits like the BurntPan or TornNotebook. ATK and DEF don't matter anymore, because you can't HIT him and he doesn't do more than the minimum possible damage. Sans goes first because in most fights, you engage the opponent. Your turn is always first because either they cede their turn to you or you fight them before they know you're there. Note most enemies having the "[Enemy] stumbled in!" or some variety of that, implying they didn't see you coming until you were there- most don't even know you're a human. Undyne turns you green with her first attack. Sans doesn't cede his turn or waste it. The reason sans goes first is because you don't fight sans. Sans fights you. This also might be why Megalovania is used instead of TSTMPWYFS, as you don't fight sans. Megalovania is a portmanteau of Transylvania and Megalomania, which could imply it's your theme attempting to overtake his. Red is (almost) the only color in the game that appears on monster models directly. (Flowey doesn't count.) Sans' blood is red, your SOUL is red, ASGORE's trident is red. Each of these characters have a reason to be determined to kill you- (UNDYNE's Determination is inside her- dunno what to think about that.) Sans performs a betrayal kill, which is a nice touch since that's how you killed Papyrus, and the act of SPAREing one turn and attacking the next is also how you can pass Toriel quickly in the RUINs on neutral. Sans is tied to JUSTICE and PATIENCE via his eye colors, the only non-red colors on enemy monsters in the entire game.

  • 23:50 Yes, I fully agree with you. Having the colour of red being the colour of importance in Sans’ fight once it’s over is a really clever symbolism in my opinion. Along with his sprite sweating when he goes all-out on the player on his last attempt to kill us. I say this because, making a skeleton bleed, (which would be near impossible without him having weak bones, due to a lack of calcium in the marrow), is a clever metaphor to show us the player, how we’ve lost all humanity within ourselves as people in their world. And how Sans, a literal skeleton is more human then we are. And compared to how we were in the other endings, Eg: The True Pacifist ending. Furthermore, I personally see this as a clever homage to remind us of all of the opportunities that we could’ve ended our genocide, Eg: Papyrus, and his “Hug of acceptance” to stop our massacre of the underground. To further my points, The game has subtly warned us *multiple times* that we were losing what humanity we had left at those points of the story. More ‘homages’ being quotes like Eg: “Human, No. Whatever you are. I Undyne, WILL Strike you Down.” “Oh, you Ugly *Creature*.”-Mettaton, in the genocide ending. And also, “Y-You have a sick sense of humour.” And, “Stop making that Creepy face!” Those last two quotes coming from Flowey, a soulless; emotionless, Apathetic, miserable creature. Now Shaking in his fear of our lack of humanity. And inhuman behaviour. As I said before, *Flowey.* Of all people. Said those lines of dialogue In our encounter with him, trying to reason with us, not just for his life, but for the future of Every timeline in the future. We have that “encounter” with him, just before we poetically meet Sans in the Final Corridoor. The Final warning, in the final corridor, before everything ends in mutually assured destruction. As a final point to my essay, I personally believe that the section of the game, from when we first enter Asgore’s house in new home, to the point where Sans leaves, and dies is meant to be the final warning to get us, the player to stop with our genocide. This section of the story is meant to be a bone shattering experience for us to suffer through. To try and get us to stop before *We All lose it all.* It’s poetic writing, We get warned about the consequences, unforeseen at the time we’re given them. But through it all. Through *Our* Determination. We go through and “Proceed”. To quote Chara, “It was Not My determination, But *Yours*.” -Chara I do apologise if I got off topic when writing this essay for you. And, I Thank you for having the patience to read my essay.

However, when you play the genocide ending of the game. All that you’re focused on is the extermination of all of the monsters that the game can throw at you, like a bullet-hell game, (Which Undertale essentially is). Keeping on topic, The warnings are hidden in plain sight for us to spot. However, since we’re so laser-focused on the extinction of monster-kind, we miss the Many warnings that the game lobs at us for us to see. And only after finishing the Genocide ending, and relinquishing our eternal retribution of owning a “cursed” save file, do we only then spot the warnings that the game gives us. And a final thank you for making such a video. I only thought of writing this comment when you spoke about the importance of the colours in the combat sections of the game. Because of this, I then remembered Charii’s “Everything wrong with undertale video” and his points about sans bleeding, and sweating. Hence why I made such a comment.

  • Something really cool about the AU (or AT) aspects of Undertale is it allows people to explore the same characters in completely impossible situations, based on their own understanding of the characters. And Sans has the most to unpack, so it’s really no wonder so many AU’s center on the skeleton. Projects such as Horrortale, Aftertale, or even all the edgey “sans goes crazy and kills everyone” stories are compelling not just because they remix the characters, but because they tell parts of the story the game cannot-I.e. the purpose of fan fiction as a concept. I could gush for hours on how the Undertale fandom is lighting in a bottle, but frankly, I don’t need to. This video sells well enough the impact the game has had.

The apron would still heal you if you could obtain it in geno (forcefields prevent your passage) and the pan still boosts your healing from food 17:00 He is actually not cheating at all. He's doing exactly what you can do all game. He moves first, like you, he dodges attacks, like you. He gets a damage boost if attacking a sparing foe, like you. He doesn't respect INV, like you don't. He holds his turns liek you do. Heck, you even manage to attack him in his turn just like he did in the second half of the fight. I'd say he's pretty fair. 18:28 My sib Chara getting ignored XD. 20:05 Statistically, Papyrus is the point where most quitters abandon the no mercy run. Sans generally pushes them to continue, or abandon the game entirely, and not as much as Paps does. 26:44 You can hold escape right up to and until you hit enter on him. His dialogue autoscrolls, so you have to push Chara to push the human into killing him. If you don't, you can still reset the run at no consequences to you

    @gabrote42@gabrote424 ай бұрын
    • About the cheating, it in a certain way is cheating, because thats the thing, all the things you do like having the first turn, dodging, etc, is a PLAYER ability, so in a real time battle game it would make sense, but in a turn based one like undertale, its actually not supposed to happen, he is changing how the game itself works to make him some sort of "player", wich should not happen at all, so even tough it would make sense that he can do things you can do, it doesn't because of the nature of it being a game, and game mechanics being actually cannon in the story.

Not that he’ll lose, but that he’ll win. With 6 souls he would surely gain control over the timeline, which means any time a reset were to happen it would be at that moment before or after the fight with frisk. Even monster kid has 2 hp. This power really fits him. Also, something you doesn't mention is that beyond messing with the mechanics to limit your choices-since you make bad ones, making you stand on a single wall, making you unable to stay on the choice screen with attacks, not letting you spare him and only go back, before ultimately trapping you completely, he actually plays like yourself, mercy kill, dodging, first turn are things you do to other enemies. • The KARMA lines are actually used -- there are multiple, and the ones displayed depend on how much KARMA you have at the time. "You felt your sins crawling on your back" 0-10 KR "You felt your sins weighing on your neck." 10-20 KR "KARMA coursing through your veins." 20-30 KR "Doomed to death of KARMA!" 30-40 KR The last of these is particularly difficult to trigger, as KR drains extremely fast at this amount. Additionally, the maximum amount of KR you can have at any one time is 40. Any more, and the game caps your KR to 40. So yeah, KR is KARMA, and not anything more, I guess.

It puts you in a situation with enough power to do anything you like and guides you toward what is ultimately the right decision, but never takes away your power of choice. I feel genuinely inspired by Undertale to create something with a judge-like character like Sans to seriously test players with things that don't matter because "it's just a game". In fact, I'm getting into narrative writing and my sibling is getting into coding, so it might be possible that I could create something like that. Even before people "discovered" the no-mercy route the game was already making the rounds because the story overall is so powerful, but of course the big boom came after people found out sans isn't what he seems to be, or more accurately, he could be doing so much worse. (i remember the reason i began the no mercy route was because the rumour was you got this fight, and people were saying it played megalovania, which as a homestuck fan i had to check out). this is why i love about his character, if you're going to be an asshole and kill everyone then he's gonna be an asshole right back and cheat to stop you, lol. it really is tragic, i hate that you can tell he'd rather be doing anything else. this is a guy who likes friendly jokes and pranks and is generally well liked, and you make him and the rest go through hell. so you get back that karma. like this is really one of the games ever!! if there's idk, a top 100 games of all time, undertale is going to be there, hell maybe even like top 50.

They embody your personal need for progression at any cost and will be with you forever whether you listen to them or not, they wish to move onto the next game, the next story, or into your life itself to continue becoming stronger, and to leave more destruction in your wake, they even comment that they see no reason to continue to continue to recreate the world and destroy it again. Once you let them in they are with you forever and if you want any world to take part in to be meaningful you have to fight against their counsel to destroy it.

I know with how insanely popular Undertale is it's incredibly easy to just find art straight off any search engine and put it in, but these are still artists who worked hard on these pieces and deserve to have their work credited. There are artists here I wanted to check out for myself but unless I reverse image search it myself (which might not even work given Undertale's popularity) I'm unable to support them. Whether it's a tagline of their socials when you show their art onscreen, a listed credit at the end of the video, or even a link included in the description, any of these would be better than nothing at all, and if you can't find the artist to credit, it's just better to use a different piece for an artist you can. Again, I really enjoyed your video, the way you broke down each part of what makes the fight so impactful from before it even starts to well after it ends made me feel like I was reliving it all over again, but the lack of credit was dissapointing and a habit to break in the future.

I see Chara as a reflection of previous players showing the game to their friend. as we can all agree there is a joy and catharsis of seeing someone new, play a game you yourself have completed. you can never have the experience again of playing said game for the first time. but you can get a taste of that through someone who is. Thats why reaction videos and first time lets plays can provide so much enjoyment. When Chara says lets destroy it, and do it all again, they mean either having someone else come on the journey through undertale as you have, or do the same with another game. milk everything you can out of it, and on to the next.

According to the description of that video, "someone made an 8 bit cover of a song from Steven Universe, another person made lyrics for an Undertale version of the same song and a comic based off it, then someone else sung it, and now I animated it." • Something I think is important about the Sans fight is that, if you aren't "good" at the game, it quickly stops being fun. Since he doesn't take damage, you have no measure of your progress. Unless you know from outside sources, you have no idea how long the fight is going to last. And after hours and hours of resets, particularly if you keep dying on the same part, many people, myself included, do exaxtly what he tells you to. I gave up my genocide run. I couldn't beat him, and grinding to do it stopped being a fun experience and became a chore, only done out of a sense of obligation to complete what I started. Which means he won.

    • I don't think I could do it myself, not just because I'm certain I could never win, just because it feels... Wrong. Especially after seeing this. It's like you have to be distant enough from the game to not be too connected or you're actually a little bit ok with killing everyone. Idk sans is set up like a real person and I just don't think I would morally agree with fighting him if that makes sense. Maybe I get too engaged with my fandoms but that's how I feel I guess.

  • Great video! Sans and this fight have been represented by fans so many times that I almost forgot what the actual fight was like haha. It was nice to revisit this character! One little thing though: 16:48 it's said somewhere else in the game (I think in a book at the library in Snowdin?) that the power of a monster largely depends on their desire to harm the opponent. While Sans certainly has incredible game-breaking powers as is, I do like the idea that the focus isn't that he's simply powerful, but that incredible power is enhanced because he's doing everything to avenge is friends and stop you, and he's the only thing standing between you and the complete annihilation of the underground's population. This might be the only time we see Sans being truly angry and violent, and not without reason. I hope I don't sound arrogant, this isn't an attempt to correct you, it's simply something I think about a lot, and I didn't see any other comment mentioning it. I thought it deserved some light shed upon.

  • When I was young, Sans' fight was the coolest thing ever, to me and I'm not surprised, it overshadowed the rest of the game for a lot of people. Sans is revealed as a secret badass and without going off character, does such a huge turn, from what you've known from him. But at the same time, this power has always been implied and if you've been playing the other routes before, you finally get the satisfaction of seeing his true strength. You really feel the consequences of what you've done, in the hardest battle of the game and one of the only ones, where the game doesn't hold your hands. In the Asriel boss, I felt like the game wanted me to win. Same for Asgore and Omega Flowey, but when you fight Sans, you're supposed to lose. Sans breaks the fourth wall, knows fully well what's at stake and Chara takes control to kill him, for the first time (or at least thats the implication) Him being the only monster to bleed also adds so much mystery to him and strengthens, how duster his death actually is. (Also the theory that his blood is ketchup is really bad tbh) Flowey's horror before and Asgore's death after, also really heighten the impact and it's overall just a stunning scene And yknow, teenagers like edge, so obviously the fandom ate this up xd At least I speak for myself when I say that and it's probably the same reason why I can't see myself doing this route anymore. The fights are cool, but it'd break my heart to hurt these characters Its still insane to me, how a game whose main focus is the Dreemurr family, has a fanbase so much more focused on this one guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it of course, but I find that kinda fascinating, since I don't commonly see something like that, with other properties Not sure, this comment really adds anything to the video, since you essentially said most of the same things, but I wanted to let the thoughts out Great stuff!

  • I love watchhing analyses like this. I saw one by Super Eyepatch Wolf (the first video I'd seen of his), and yeah pretty much, Undertale NAILED IT with everything, especially this moment. If you keep going the way you're going, you're gonna have a bad time" and man from what I've seen of fighting him (Mark my words, I will NEVER do that route myself. I don't think I could even be paid to do so) that threat was not a simple bluff. Also I know the "stronger than you" parodies you are talking about, and I love them to bits. Going to post another comment right after this one with my favorite bit of the lyrics of each of them.

  • I think the craziest part is that all of this -- ALL of this -- is 100% super optional. Like, many people declared this game a masterpiece _without even knowing of the Sans fight._ And then you add this masterpiece of a fight to the mix? That's when it goes from a great game to an _icon._

  • This fight is also amazing because it personifies what it's like to have an unstoppable force meet with an unmovable object. You're an unstoppable force killing everything, and Sans is the unmovable object that will do everything in his power to stop you when all he held dear is dust in the wind.

  • Might I add a personal observation of mine about that fight and its difficulty as opposed to anything else in the game (I know I know, the average commenter is a die-hard-speedrunner-champion-of-doom-who-did-a-no-hit-on-the-first-try human... no, whatever they are), well for my part after my, oh easily over SIXTIETH time dying to him, the feeling of horror lived throughout the Genocide route slowly disappeared to be replaced by a "normal" gaming behavior, seeing no texts, only patterns, only the challenge, ragequitting, trying again, over and over, even once trying to get spared by him... Until finally, on the VERY moment the inevitable happened, after like anyone with a "gaming survivak" instinct I freaked out at the end of his last attack when he tossed me in every direction, expecting one last trick to dodge, yes, right I thought "I did it!" there was a moment of *satisfaction*. And that brief, ethereal feeling quickly dissipating, realiation struck. That was THE moment I felt truly monstrous.

  • quick bit, when you get to flowey crying for you not to kill him, you don't just watch as your character slashes him 8 times, you the player must start that, the character hits 7 times, you hit once, because, well, go look at that other video I know of describing how chara isn't the villain they are better at explaining.

  • Great work. I won't say 10k epithets, and I don't need to - there's a ton of other comms, but you've managed to save that atmosphere even for me (I'm not the one who this video'll impact the most, in fact it shouldn't have - English isn't my native language, I've already saw similar videos and I know a LOT of information about undertale and even more about aus), you've made this video not only showing your point of view, but also ultimately proving one. There're still some minor minuses like poor made oc or smth like that, but just like Toby with those small powers that you have you've made if not the best, then honourable version of this video. Thanks.

  • This video is amazing and really well organised but one thing that bothered me is the bleeding part- I thought it was ketchup cause sans drinks ketchup, so ketchup dripping out of him in his last moments was kinda like a last joke thing- it also fits with him going to grillbys with papyrus afterwards (not literally cause they are dead but metaphorically speaking) One other thing that really bothers me about sans and undertale that wasn’t mentioned is when you spare sans when he gives you the option to. He says “if your really my friend you won’t come back.” So I decided to do an experiment and so I spared him then reset the timeline, I thought his dialogue and attitude towards the player would change as he would remember the previous timeline because it wasn’t a true reset, however his text and attitudes towards the player are the exact same. It’s kinda disappointing because it seems like something Toby would add but it isn’t there, then again it would make sense if sans does know but he’s acting the same to try and forget but there is no indication that is true so it’s forever unknown if he truly does remember or not

You automatically do the eight attacks. In my opinion that also adds to it as it's basically saying that this is your last confirmation before you continue. 26:32
