Stellar Blade PS5 - Digital Foundry Tech Review - An Ultra-Polished Action Game
Stellar Blade has finally arrived for PlayStation 5 and we're delighted to say that this is an ultra-polished, highly enjoyable action game. Based on Unreal Engine 4, developer Shift Up isn't rewriting the technological rulebook in any way - but what is delivered is nigh-on flawless within its ambition. It's something of a tonic in a world where so many games ship with issues, requiring multiple patches to address. John Linneman has the DF tech review for you.

Depends on who you're asking. Are you asking someone?
If only modern day developers understood just how important this statement really is.
Hopefully Shift Up takes note of these types of reviews instead. That’s all that matters and a lot of reviewers clearly had a hell of a time no matter their overall review and score. A sequel or prequel is in high demand.

Balanced mode on my LG OLED is where it’s at 🤩
Honestly hearing that its like a PS2 era game on modern hardware sounds really appealing. A lot of AAA games are so bland and try to cater to too much, and are often buggy/broken. Games need to be more focused like this. Hope it comes to more platforms.
"PS2 era game on modern hardware" I heard this and IMMEDIATELY thought "WOW, that has to be good!" PS2/3 to xbox360 was the golden era of gaming.
That's how I described it to my coworker. Feels nostalgic while having modern benefits.
Yh... we don't need 100 hours worth of content when that content is just collectibles. We also don't need hollywood actors to help sell games, all that this does is inflate the budget and resources needed.
Back when gaming was great.
exactly why it interested me, this is how games should be, as someone who plays PCSX2 a lot, this is right up my alley
Delivering a complete and largely bug/glitch free game. 👏👏👏
So a game that wants a existance of its own beyond the shackles of the toriparasite... It's a surprise, but a welcome one.
Were you here when Lies of P came out?
@@mechanicalmonk2020lies of p was underwhelming and just felt clunky to play. Not to mention it’s basically a souls copy and paste and that’s not everyone’s type of game

A video game from 2003 built with modern tools is exactly what the industry needs more of and why I enjoy Nintendo games so much.
Took the words right out of my mouth
So, true. The games of 2003 to 2014 were already perfect. We need more fun games like this with no bugs rather than a buggy mess with good quality graphics like Cyberbugs and others.

Just platinum this game today. what a great experience, this game deserve the praise
There's something so satisfying seeing huge bosses reacting to being hit. It's something a lot of games don't do.
YES, instead of only health bars and flying numbers. I'm sure this took way more effort, but it's so much more intuitive and satisfying.
Oh God, yes. Souls and souls like titles too often make bosses seem like they don’t even feel/care that they’re being hit, even when you’re dealing huge amount of damage to them. It’s frustrating and boring
A hundred times YES to this. Battles done right.
But at the same time foliage does not react to the characters' movement...
Yes, but attacks on the player seem to pass thru her body like she's a ghost.
All this is even more impressive when you consider this is their first time developing a console game. It's very evident that they're gamers first and they wanted to give people the best experience. Already preordered, I can't wait to play!
There's talent in Korea, Lies of P wad amazing technically as well
@@SafMan89 They've been developing great games for decades, but are mostly known for their MMORPGs like Lineage II, Aion, ArcheAge, Tera, Black Desert etc. which unfortunately were way too grindy for the majority of the Western audience, almost becoming a full-time job if you wanted to compete in PvP. Aion and ArcheAge were absolutely extreme in that regard. Western publishers of these games always added P2W sooner or later. Then the games always died shortly after.
They are pros from various gaming companies.
Korea people just built different
@@SafMan89 Talent is everywhere, western studios are just suffering from a severe lack of meritocratic hiring practices.
THIS is how games should be made these days. Performance above all else and this just proves that it can work. We always say gameplay is king and that’s tied to performance, not graphics. Most triple A studios seem to have forgotten that.

Honestly I don’t think it’s that uncommon.a lot goes into the pre production of games/movies etc
This is actually easier than modelling them in 3D software by hand, it's just the tools used to be expensive in Hollywood and product engineering. 3D scanners, photogrammetry and automatic LOD generators are great automation tools that more games should use. And artists can actually have fun in sculpting.
This is a video game that’s proud of being a video game. Not a game trying to be a movie, not a live service. Beginning to end, polished. This is what a AAA game is supposed to be like. Demo is 🔥. Can’t wait for the full game

I doubt it. It isn't that simple in most cases, and if it were a case in which it was an easy migration, they would have just ported the project over to 5 during development. The sequel will no doubt start development on 5, though.
Great tech review John! It's fantastic to know I can be confident of the product, will be picking up Day 1!

It’s great to see this game get the love and attention it deserves. This was a passion project from one guy, who grew into a team, and that team grew into a group funded by Sony to make the game they truly wanted without anything holding them back. Such a great story, and now from it a great game!
Shift Up existed for over tens years and is not funded by Sony. They're independent. They're also valued at over a billion dollars. They do have a publishing deal with Sony for this specific game, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the game is self funded because their mobile games make so much dang money for them. I'm not saying this to discredit Kim Hyung-tae in any way. Just that it's not just one guy or small team that came out of nowhere. There's hundreds of devs on that worked on this game.

Fair and professional. So glad it was John the one in charge for the full review. We really could use a proper PC port hopefully in the near future though.
A PC port will surely come. 1. This is a "smaller" Sony published game, so more chance to arrive on PC sooner. 2. This is a Korean developed game, and the PC is king in Korea. 3. It was in development for PC before Sony took over publishing duties, so at least a basic build already exists. 4. It is an Unreal Engine 4 game, so it's easy to port. 5. Some of us would like to game on a monitor in our little private cubicle away from the big TV in the living room to avoid awkward stares from the wife, understandably, and I think Sony understands this too.

@OtakuBenny2210 I don't like the souls style games. Glad you liked that game. I haven't played BG3. I couldn't comment either way. I don't however engage with identity/division politics. People who do and argue about it, are people who are played like a fiddle by the MSM 24/7, brainwashed into picking sides and theories frok talking heads that engulf their lives, mainly because they lack anything more interesting to talk about or engage with. The world's top 2 percent wealthy, pay bad actors and other media darlings to keep propaganda being pumped at people online and on TV. The design of this is to make enemies between anyone based on differences with each other. These are strings of the masses that they pull and have people at each other like puppets, because they know united people stand together, divided people fall. It makes the masses more malleable and easy to mould for their agendas. They own everything and the online world that feeds you theories and propaganda. They infect your language with buzzwords and catch whatever trending zeitgeist they can as part of mass manipulation. I refuse to acknowledge any of it. I enjoy games for what they are and if I disagree with the message, I don't lose any sleep over it. No one is my enemy. What their private choices for their lives are don't affect me. Live and let live I say. Don't let yourself be played into engaging with any of the language they want you to use. If you don't like something, cool, don't engage. Whatever you do don't be a puppet. They win.
@@OtakuBenny2210 Goty will go to the game that had the most impact. Last year it was bg3 cause it's genuinely an amazing game that was able to attract lots of players (including me) who were never interested in dnd nor would have ever considered playing a game with turned based combat and give them a great RPG experience nonetheless. No other game last year did anything close to that. Lies of P was good but it had some glaring issues and it didn't get much attention cause as a souls-like it didn't really excel at anything and it wasn't genre defining and set new standards for the industry like bg3 and elden ring did the last couple of years.

We need more fresh games like Stellar Blade!
What makes this 'fresh'? The gameplay doesn't look much different than EVERY OTHER Third Person action game? How is this 'fresh' compared to God of War, or Devil May Cry, or Nier, or Dark Souls, etc? Maybe I've finally just aged out, but all these new games just feel like the same basic games I've been playing for 30 years, just with a different story and 'fresh' coat of paint.
Agreed. Him saying it feels like a 2003 game with modern tech is exactly what I’ve been looking for. We need more shorter fun quirky games
LOL, yeah „fresh“. This is the best example of copying all kinds of elements from other games. It’s copied well in execution, but definitely not innovative or creative in any regard. Rather superficial and a bit dull. But whoever likes superficial fun will probably be pleased with it.
This by all indications makes it evident that Shift Up / Hyung-tae Kim knows exactly what a video game is supposed to be. A great looking and playing game that knows the limitations of the hardware and doesn’t always take itself too seriously in order to try to compete with Oscar worthy film. I’m hoping Sony takes notice and adjusts their first party strategy a bit to release more games like this. The part about stepping on PlayStation symbols - I’m all for it. I miss that kind of stuff in games.
1:13 Well timed "let´s get into it"
Using UE4 and not 5 helped the game to be more stable while looking gorgeous at the same time, for a game releasing exclusively on ps5 that's the perfect choice, considering that all UE5 releases (SO FAR) are struggling to perform well on consoles without sacrificing fidelity & texture .. hope Black Myth Wukong will be the exception

I love playing Stellar Blade Demo on Prioritize Performance Mode. I’m still amazed that it runs at 1440p 60fps. I may end up keeping it on that setting in the Full Game - Day One!
Knew this would be very good after seeing first teasers ages ago. Amazing graphics
It's 2024, and Shift Up shipped a game that is content complete and nails not only performance, but also a proper balanced mode and resolution mode for those who prefer it? I guess that's another way it's like a PS2 game...shipping with complete content and features. Awesome!
PS5 is killing it with this, Hellblade 2, FF, and for some Ronan.
This is how games should be made. Performance>ray tracing bs. Make a nice looking game that performs smoothly over pushing graphic boundaries. Save that for more powerful hardware down the line. I’m tired of choppy 30fps games. Even stable 40fps mode is acceptable.
I knew it would be John before he spoke. 1.) Highly anticipated game. 2.) Flair for drama, he let it play out a bit before speaking. John is the best from the best group of guys on any gaming channel.
Yep! John is the best, his videos are just top notch.
I remember the other young guy from DF made online statements against Eve, so there probably would have been some backlash if he made this review
This was a beautiful review 10/10, Stellar Blade is going to be amazing
You can tell devs had a blast making this game and that they are big sony fans as they said in their behind the scenes video.
Everyone is a Sony fan until they get laid off
Layoffs aren't exclusive to Sony. My tech company got hit with 25+ layoffs too. Stop hating @@bugsnax4145
@@bugsnax4145 I was a Sony fan until they released a firmware update that destroyed the battery on their WF XM4 earbuds and then they refused a free return, but that's neither here nor there... and an entirely different department.
I can’t wait to see and play this game on my LG OLED. Coming from a lifetime of gaming on budget TVs my OLED makes everything I play look stunning. It’s especially true for game that make use of all its features. So happy to see this game is performing well.
Same honesty. I'm buying this game because of the TV. Recently got an LG OLED and man, it's just gorgeous. SpiderMan2 was amazing but this looks like it's gonna be on another level.
@@TheDouglas717 yeah, I’m excited for this game mainly for its art style. They did an incredible job with all the designs of characters and enemies. I also love a good action game, specifically SoulsLike style combat. I also love games like Sekiro and Lies of P so I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it.
I got the LG c3 two weeks ago games look amazing and the vrr is good can't wait to see stellar blade on it tomorrow
Yay! A game well done that pleases Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Nier, Soulsborne fans like myself! So happy to see this level of polish and very pleased with my pre-orders (yes plural, I bought a few copies for myself, friends and family and one for that one colleague at work who promissed to deliver good performance and actually did and didn't slack off, Proud of you Ryan! :p).
The visual quality/performance modes are really top notch. Congrats to the developers.
Need it on PC damn it!
it’s produced by Sony
