"theBrake" - tigerexped Volvo TGB 13 C30x disc brake conversion, final offroad test

We have developed a full disc brake conversion kit for Volvo C30x series' axles. This is the first test on a real vehicle. Taking place in Romania, May 2016.
EDIT 2021: The kit is a whole is not available for purchase anymore, the demand for such rather exquisite solutions is simply too low and by now there are a few much cheaper conversion kits on the market.
We still offer our bespoke 9x17 wheels in various PCDs, including the original 8x222.25mm as the original wheels.
Feel free to visit us at: www.tigerexped.de

  • Exceptional brake job, very interesting to see the vehicle suspension system, excellent performance with its six wheel design, nice video too, and finally, your place is like haven, to be there live and breath at such natural and clean environment is my big dream.

  • Yes!!!!! I have wanted one of these since LEGO issued a kit back in the mid 80's.... But, my importing and exporting of auto's days are over.... I still want one of these though... But, it is how it goes... I will have to settle with wishing in one hand, while somebody craps in the other hand, to see which hand gets fuller faster... I enjoyed this video... Will check out the other videos on this channel to see if there is more of this Volvo.. if there is, that will be an easy sub button to push.... lastly.... you Katz showing the flexing of this unit while off road, PRICELESS!!!!!!!!

  • I love portal axles, it gives so much more ground clearance, lesser chances of being beached on the diff. Nice job 👌👍

  • We have had the "fun" of loosing 100% brake power in the Austrian mountains! Pretty scary experience that only stopped when we drove into some ones garden! Our diesel engine in our C304 does not provide a lot of engine braking and the drums are not up to the task, so I would REALLY like to have 6 discs instead! Unfortunately it is not legal to modify your brakes in Denmark :-( But I'm happy to see that someone develops stuff for our old cars :-) Good job, it looks really well made!

    • Are you sure? What if you register it somewhere else in EU, modify brakes and come back to DK? After all EU stuff has to be legal all over the EU...

      @tigerexped@tigerexped5 жыл бұрын
    • @@tigerexped It is supposed to be like that, but in reality you end up in a leg-lock when trying to get through with it :-( Even tüv approval on something like coil springs on a modern car won't always get you through inspection...

  • Nicely done! Are the dual calipers necessary? No kill like overkill I guess. ;-) Any chance to develop a pinzgauer kit?

    @Chris-bg8mk@Chris-bg8mk7 жыл бұрын
    • Hi Christopher... dual calipers in front are there for several reasons: One being, that you want to retain the original brake circuit, which is a very safe implementation of basically a double H circuit using two brake cylinders per drum (originally) per front wheel. So unless you want to totally modify this aswell, keeping dual circuit per wheel is really the best option - technically, not financialy, granted ;) Second reason is probably less obvious, but here you go: Retaining the stock main brake cylinder aswell and the concept of having identical calipers all around (for spares in remote places) requires a certain volume per calipers and axle to work properly with the gives brake booster force and weight of the Volvo. So essentially if you wanted to go way smaller, you'd have to change the main brake cylinder aswell. Given a certain discs size needed to clear the portal housing, small calipers become a problem and they look stupid, too ;) You could of course merge the two front calipers and simply (almost) employ a single big one on the front axle, but that would again kill the concept of identical parts all around. Im summary: Not worth the hassle and a decision made by several OEMs the same way: Look at the Unimog or, while we are at it: The Pinzgauer. The latter also uses identical ATE54 calipers all around, twin setup in front. And for your last question: Theoretically we could develop the "same" (complete new development, I'm afraid) for the Pinzgauer, but: We don't own one nor do we have access do technical drawings or alike. So I guess it won't happen in the foreseable future ;)

    @randleedowse2552@randleedowse25526 жыл бұрын
    • We weren't there to play in the mud, we just wanted to get up the hill to get the brakes hot on the way down. This was the last prototype testing so filming was only second priority - drone is easy, as it has auto-follow and nobody needs to care about it ;)

  • 3:40 Sounds like a locked differential. Not the differential itself, but rather the tyres screaching. I also saw that despite being on solid concrete they were moving slower than they should have. Rear axles on the truck have no diff? Or you simply locked it and forgot to unlock?

    @Plusle843@Plusle8434 жыл бұрын
    • No diff between the two rear axles...

      @tigerexped@tigerexped4 жыл бұрын
    • @@tigerexped Not BETWEEN the axles... How about between WHEELS on SEPARATE axles? Or do you think that locked differential BETWEEN axles makes wheels on those axles rotate with the same speed when turning? 0-*-0 Star is locked(absent) differential, 0's are wheels.

      @Plusle843@Plusle8434 жыл бұрын
    • @@Plusle843 Yes we know. All 3 diffs can be locked but even with open diffs the rear axles will scrub because they are forced into identical pinion speeds. These never exist, as the virtual turning point is never exactly in the middle of these 2 axles and the wheels never tangent to the turning circle. The result is the sound you rear and the marks you see. Opening the "locked diff" between the rear axles helps a lot, but will of course not make the wheels stand any more tangent to the circle, either.

      @tigerexped@tigerexped4 жыл бұрын
    • @@tigerexped Just rewatched the part, and I see a little more. It not only spins with wrong speed, but those wheels seem... How do I put it? They seem to have a "broken" turn point. They would scrape MUCH less, but would still scrape on asphalt purely because they do not turn, and have to slide a little on account of there being a single "point" of truning. If one wheel on the double rear axles truns perfect radius to not srcape, the other will be scraping to "account" for hard "frame". If the turning point is between the wheels they both will scrape, one axle inside the turn, the other outside. It still doesn't really give much on account of locked differential, and how inner wheel spins faster than it should when turning.
