I wish I had this instructor. He posted 6years ago and still useful today. Thanks for helping the young generation. Your absolute an incredible talented instructor. We need more instructors like you. Stay blessed Sir
Absolutely. I had my first lesson the other day and had no idea what the instructor was talking about, other than that I was 'doing it wrong mate' (which he continually told me without really explaining what 'doing it right' would actually mean). Wish I had the instructor in this video too.
Give this man a pay rise no one teaches like this guy. Hes giving all his knowledge out for free for me and plenty of new other people to driving 18 speed, I say pay the man more on his hourly rate!!! He must have a cape on for us newbies
My god nobody has ever explained this process so clearly as much as you have. Very helpful for me to remember when I go for my HR one day! Great tutorial mate well done!!👍😌
I didn't watch more than 2 minutes to love this guy and the way he teaches. Mind bursting. Thumbs up 👍man
Thanks man for this amazing explanation, I just obtained my temporary license waiting for my card. I love driving trucks.
Right on!
@@ianwatsons Now, how do you reverse the cnts lol
You definitely should open up more truck driving schools & motorcycle driving schools!!! You're explanations are clear & very understandable!!! Thanks for you're free time on explaining how to drive trucks! One of the best instructors in Australia!
Next time I am in Australia - I will make a some more videos.
I'm wondering, will a trucker in your country feel a difference in how the engine "pulls" when you have FOUR trailers hooked up? They never hook up more than two per rig in my country and those are actually only 10 meters long, not 16 (total length is 20 meters).
I don't have plans on becoming a truck driver (although I have great respect for truckers and their job), this video makes want to get a truck driving license and buy a truck just for the sheer awesomeness of those things.
Best instructor on KZhead. Good video manual gearbox was my nightmare however in 🇬🇧 UK any truck built around 2014 to 2016 is now Automatic gearbox saving all the hustle
This guy is a good teacher....
Thanks for your kind words
the man is a gud teacher godbless
@@ianwatsons I think it's because he's an actual teacher. Amazing.
I though so too.
@@bikerboy3k anyone can be a teacher, but to be a good one like Ian is a different story
Many of the comments here are about how synchromesh and automatic transmissions are "better" than RoadRanger transmissions. The fact is RoadRangers are significantly simpler and therefore cheaper than most other types. You can buy a whole brand new 1850 ft/lb rated RR for less than the cost of a gasket, bearing and seal kit for a ZF heavy truck transmission! They are easy to use, strong, efficient and when they reach the end of their considerable lifespan - they are incredibly cheap and easy to rebuild. "Better" is subjective to the user, but there is no arguing with the economics. They are the most common heavy truck transmission in the world and if your intended career is truck driving, then this video is an excellent introduction to a valuable, employable skill to have.
After watching many videos trying to understand the split i finally found a teacher thanks
Hands on learning is the best way to understand and get students settled in faster and learn alot quicker as opposed to sitting in a classroom and learning theories all day in my opinion 👍
A lot of people forget to mention with Eaton fuller non synchro gear boxes, when you press the clutch all the way to the floor it stops the gears spinning which is why it will grind when you shift or it will be tight to shift, So you should only use full clutch from a standing start to select a gear that's what it was designed for. Use just over half the clutch pedal for shifting once you are moving. I think understanding how this gear box works will greatly help any beginner
That's only if the clutch brake works.
And on some boxes the clutch break is on the shifter
Thank you so much..I am currently learning and it keeps crunching and the instructor keeps telling me to put my foot all the way to the floor when you sing the clutch.. he crunches it as well but I was so confused as to why sometimes it’s smooth and other times it isn’t.. thank you again
@@sylvannaagostino828 no only clutch always to the floor to engage the clutch break for first gear. All the rest are half clutch. U might have had the same problem as me and not matching the rpm to the road speed when changing gears.
@@cokeaddict1663 tomorrow I will do it..i had revs right but would lose the power when it wouldn't engage and now I know why.. I called a few truck driver friends and they all totally agree with you..
By uploading and spreading education about trucks you are doing a good job my friend 👍
This is great. It's better than trucker talk with double clutching.
I think that is the best explanation and demonstration I have ever seen.
Thanks! (a combination of loads of training experience mixed with a degree in education helps!)
He is very easy to understand, good teacher. I like his tip for working out which gear you're in if you forget. Seriously wish you had more videos they are the best on YT
I've had two lessons and have been absolutely lost until watching your video. Great teacher. You've helped me 1000 times more than the instructors I've had. Glad I saw this before my last couple of lessons and testm
Glad to help!
I second this sentiment 100%. I've had one lesson so far and my instructor's go-to comment seems to be 'you're doing it wrong mate.' When I ask for a deeper explanation of the concept he says 'you'll be right mate, you just need more practice.' Agghhh, but practice what exactly? Anyway, the point is, I learned more by watching this video than I suspect I will in 6 lessons with my IRL instructor. Thanks Ian.
This guy is a good teacher
Best demonstration ever. Cameraman did a great job too.
This dude is one of the best driving instructors .very good teacher .and very easy to understand.
This was very helpful. Better than the rest of the videos on ytube
Thanks for your kind words
Really enjoyed your video.
Absolutely!
TRUE!!! GLAD I FOUND HIS VID!!! the other vid on youtube about this is just blah blah blah blah blah and cant explain it well. Big help for me as a truck driver😊
It's great but not exactly the best. He didn't show transitioning from low to high and vise versa. Also, you don't need to let the clutch go when transitioning from one gear to neutral to low. The track is likely to lose power. Overall it's a good video. Maybe watch this kzhead.info/sun/aLJvYKycpaCcmJ8/bejne.html
I actually leave in Nigeria West Africa, and I,m planning on how to move over to the USA the land of the free,, that's why I'm learning to master driving the heavyweight truck ,,thank you so immensely for teaching me , God bless you and God bless America.
I just realised who this is !!! Your old man taught me how to drive in the acco with the spicer gearbox
Wow! That old acco was a ripper!
I've only ever changed gear without the clutch. That's the way I learned (taught myself) but I have to learn the double clutching if I want to get my HR license. The main thing I was worried about when I was learning is whether the range splitter and high / low splitter worked without the clutch. This video is so informative and clear, well done!
❤ൃ,ൂ്ൃ
this is exactly what I was taught when I got my HGV license , very well explained , and easy to understand , mind you I love the auto shift transmission in my Volvo FH700 too
Very bloody informative, also gives the "don't do it but we do it routinely". Thanks
hello sir. I like to say,you are good in explaining how to drive.i learned something today from you.what I like most Is that you explain one thing 3 times or more.now I know to drive a truck by your instruction. thank you so much.i am feom south africa.🙏 God bless you sir.
Thanks and welcome
That was a very well done and professional video, you covered a lot of useful information and techniques on how to drive a standard as well as demonstrating everything you were saying, great job!!
Dude thank you so much. Made so much sense the way you explained it. I’ve got my first lesson in a couple of hours and I’m heaps more confident now!
Great tutorial on a dying art. Driving in empathy with the vehicle.
Best explanation of how to operate a road ranger box on KZhead! Hats off to you!
Thank you so much! This has helped me out a lot, I drive an 8 speed normally but I'm advancing licences so this has helped a lot. Once again thank you :)
Hey Buddy - i had 9 hours traing in cab - trainer good but to be fait what you shared here in 13 minutes threaded everything with ease. Thanks!
I've tried to explain all that, umpteen times. I don't know why people don't get it....? 10 out of ten chap. Saving this video to show others in the future.
Hello Mark, how are you doing today
I hear ya! (1) It is hard to explain something you do all day and have done for years.... and (2) every beginner is different.
You got the better teaching qualities man😎😎😎
Glad to hear that
Thank you for such a clear explanation. I just got an old dump truck with a fuller transmission. It’s been a trick to learn! The revving and double clutch action is a trip, but it makes so much sense!
just need to understand the three speeds 1 Engine speed 2 Gear speeds 3 Road speed but ya getting there :)
I learned a bunch of stuff from this. The double clutch thing was not something I learned in truck driving school as a young gurl, but I realize it makes sense. My teacher told me the engine could handle a continuous clutch but I bet the double clutch is easier on the transmission.
This video is the most helpful in understanding roadrangers. Thank you
I drove my first truck yesterday (mack with 18sp rr) I learnt how to by watching your videos. Amazing. Thank you 👍
One of the best 'how to' vids on driving the ranga on youtube. Well explained, and clear instructions. You must a great success rate with your students! Keep up the good work!
Hello how are you doing
Did my hr license with Ian Watson awesome company 👍
You are really really a good teacher have enjoyed watching you 🙏🙏❤️
Thanks!
Man you are the best teacher have never met keep up the good work may God bless you
Thanks for such an informative video. As a UK truck driver, I learned more in 13 minutes from your video than 2 hours with a driving school a few years ago in WA. Now I feel confident enough to operate one of these machines.
@blue heeler Geraldton mate
Great instruction, I learnt this 50 years ago.
Me too. But I learned on a Mini and transferred the technique over to a Volvo 144GL. Using the clutch was so mainstream 😄
And that takes the mystery out of splitters and double clutching for me. Thanks. This is most helpful as I am studying to take my MR test very soon. The most clear explanation and easy to remember. 👍
Thank you! I've booked in for my HR non-synchronous course and this helps a lot!
that's great! good luck!
I wanna be a good truck driver, I wish o could find a good teacher like this guy... wow!
Thanks mate. Am going for my HC next week and this has helped to make me a lot less daunted by the number of gears....cheers!
Dan Richo how’d u go
Very clear you are number one teacher. I'm watching from zimbabwe
Thank you! 😃
Best roadranger gear box video on KZhead
Wow, thanks!
:D the sigh at the end, hahaha, love it. he's had enough
I've watched this like 20 times and every time it helps explain more and more.really great video.
Happy to help mate!
Me too
The world needs instructors like this one for sure. ❤️
Loud and clear best teacher ever
I'm a big fan of manual gearboxes but in a truck it always seemed so damn confusing! That was until I watched this video. Now I know there are other types of manual transmissions that require other methods of gear changing but this guy has inspired me to use them all. Great video. Good instructor. Greetings from 🇬🇧

I did my non synchronous training today for whole day. Passed reverse test, theory, load securing etc however I'm still struggling with gears. Your video was more informative than the all day training today. Tomorrow I got three more hours of training left. See how I go tomorrow. I wish you were based in Melbourne. Thanks for the video mate.
Hy how are you doing now?
@@siyabongadube3223 I have been driving b double and truck and dog for last couple of years. All of them auto. It's hard to get hold of road Ranger. So I haven't had much practise. Got the licence for RR. Thanks for asking
Perhaps the best video ever in gear shifts. I learned something invaluable. I apply it in my small car. You are making my rides smoother and happier. Downshifting is way too better in this way.
Great to hear!
By far the best road ranger gearbox instructional video! Really well explained!
best info clip i've seen so far on here ty!
Happy to help!
Such a great instruction video thanks heaps for sharing
Thanks Chris!
I like the way he is explaining indeed he is a good instructor
I want to run more about driving the truck and you are good teacher like the way you teach
Worked with a bloke that insisted that floating was for the pros and double clutching was for wimps. Watched him absolutely destroy the gearbox trying to prove that point. I personally do both, pretty much whatever the truck is happy to do. Failed a float, I'll fix it with a Double, not argue with it while dealing with traffic. At the end of the day, double clutching or floating, as long as your changing the gears cleanly your a good driver. If your more worried about your 'coolness' factor than operating the truck cleanly and safely, your in the wrong profession.
Great presentation and clear explanation. Thanks
You are a good teacher. Calm and very calm.
He is cool. His teaching is clear crystal..
thanks for simplifying this a bunch mate, the whole double clutching thing can seem like a headfuck but you nailed the explanation
Cheers for the video! I'm doing my HR in two weeks and wanting to understand how the double clutch works. Seems simple in theory, I can't wait to practice 😁
did you pass?
Double clutch is the best, you will have fun.
Respect guy!!!you good at teaching!!i'm not a truck driver, but you inspires me a lot to know how to drive a truck!!!what i like the most, is the way that he tries all his best to explain as well as pricting!!
Thank you thank you thanks you. And to some of the commentators thank you too! No one ever mentioned a lot of these things! FFS no wonder I struggled with gear changing my first time in one! Can't wait to try it again armed with this new knowledge!
Pro tip, the clutch isn't necessary. Infant it works better without the clutch. Simply lift your foot as you pull out of one gear, bring the revs up to match the new gear and slide her in. You only need the clutch to start moving
Yeah but you can't float gears on the exam
Going for Hr licence today, this has been very helpful as I am using that model gearbox. Good job
Unfortunately I had trouble getting it right. So hard needing to do things that do not come natural. Down gearing got me,. Back in a week or two to have a bit more training before being tested. I hope my confidence gets better.
sorry to hear!
We help over 50 students pass their heavy vehicle driving test each month in Brisbane - if you need out help - let us know!
I like the "That'll Do" at the end... Great work, really informative..
Glad you liked it!
I,m so delighted to learn how to change the gear in most of the modern trucks,, thank you for your indept explanation which really give me the understanding of how to shift the gear, , infact you are one of my favorites and best teacher, God bless you
the man thanks mate. love the ending haha
not many people watch all the way to the end! ha ha!
Very good. Am currently doing my HR licence and learning this gearbox has been the hardest part, letting go of the stick has been an issue for me. Finishing the course next week, road positioning and reverse parking was a breeze. Watching this and practicing ( as well as you can do in a lounge chair with a remote as a gear stick ) will help wonders. One significant thing is taking up slack on the gear stick prior to moving it when you push the clutch. 👍
great tip, practising and visualising at home on your couch is really helpful.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
This is the most helpful video on shifting I have found. 👍
iam from fiji..I have class 6 license...I drive normal trucks..asked drivers to help me...but given wrong teachings...I thank you very much for helping me know really how to drive high and low speed...you have been a blessing to me and many guys like me...God Bless you
14 years with that exact box,the more I drove it the better it/I got. It's timing and revs,as you said,if you try n rush it,it will crunch/grind everytime. Only ever needed the clutch on take off,now I'm retired, miss it big time.
I am the same mate the theory is eh mostly understandable for a bloke like me but I am hands on and I fuck up abit as most do then it clicks with me and I begin mastering it. I drive an 18 speed with the correct adaptor/shifter in the US truck simulator I got and it is fun, and drive an automatic Heavy Rigid in real life...I love trucks and I love logistics. Pity pencil pushers ruin it to degrees.
@@tkx86 ..... enjoy your career mate👍as you know it's a great job! Even the bad days are better than pushing a pen,and the good days are near on perfect! My love of trucks n buses started when I was standing in line on hot summer pavement as a school kid waiting for a bus to arrive so that our class could go on an excursion. The bus rolled up and all I can remember was the smell of diesel and hot rubber coming from those tyres...I was maybe 6 years old, hooked! I ended up driving trucks n buses during my working life.....would do it all over again and not change a thing.
God please bless all the drivers who do double clutching ;))
Your demonstration is absolutely perfect.you are genius.
Give me one good reason why I should use the clutch, Apart from the fact you have to use it in a driving test truckie for over 35 years.
I hear ya! You do what works best for you - this video is to help people pass a driving test and follow the rules of the driving test.
AUSTRALIA'S #1 Teacher ... Thanks for sharing !!
Jimmy Syncro here. I used to forget what gear I was in so I decided to learn instead with a synchromesh transmission which I'm now restricted to. Any heavy rigid vehicle WITHOUT a crash gearbox (HR-B) is my office. Keep your eyes on the road!.
Hello how are you doing
You only need the clutch to take off & stop
Could also float the gears after starting movement.
You are an excellent teacher. It's your communication skills. Because of the words you choose to use you are the best. You make it so easy. I really appreciate you very much. Thank you.
This bloke is such a good teacher I just can’t believe it 🤣🤣🤣
Hello how are you doing
The only place you will learn how to change gears is on the open hi way. by the time you come back from your trip , guaranteed you will be a professional truck driver . !
Best driven without using clutch
This guy is awesome, I was able to drive 18speed with his lessons, keep us posted
i went to 2 different driving schools but none of them explains this clear nd i even had to cancel my session u r amazing mate. wish i was in queensland to attend ur classes
I’ll stick to floating the gears
Me too, double clutching are for ladies trapped inside a man body.
i watched an old dude back in the late 60's stirring the box like he was stirring porridge without any clutching barring stop and start. he showed me the gears and i was off. a day or so later i was stirring it also with out the clutch. i can't believe when i see operators with years behind them using the clutch. they going to have no hip left before too long.
Who needs clutch 🤣
Exactly only use once to takeoff after that never
Amazing. I paid 100 for a 1 hr drive about 10 years ago in qld. I learn more in the first minute if this video than I learned in the session. Thank you
Thanks. Has been a long time since driving a RR and was just looking for a refresher. The basic style of instruction makes it nice and easy to understand.
Hello how are you doing
Double the clutch in a Roadranger? Use it to take off. Don’t touch clutch after that.
This is what we call teaching...👏👏👏👏
