Why are the nests on the ground? Since the turkey is a bird, you'd think the nest would be in the trees.

Fun fact: when hatching domestic turkey eggs (and peafowl too) they do not have a strong instinct to peck, and will die of starvation without stimulation to do so. Knowledgeable flock owners know to time some chicken chicks to hatch at the same time and put them in with the poults/peachicks and they will stimulate them to peck and eat.
