This is what we do to prevent water from freezing in the Winter for our Chickens.
These are the HORIZONTAL NIPPLES we got, Amazon affl link: amzn.to/2FrFEOn (one of the nipples had a slow leak, so it is a good idea to get extras just in case). Watering cups will freeze.

I'm in the process of building one like yours. I couldn't get the nipples to thread into the 6" SCH 40 pipe; luckily I had a 1/4" X 28 pipe thread tap and then they went in like a dream after I tapped the holes.

Why don’t u use a heat lamp that will heat the water and the hole pen😄

... and because the electricity bill would be astronomical if you were to try to heat an open air pen. ;-)
