    • Summer Tsunami That is the stupidest reason I’ve ever heard. Ilia wasn’t worst than Adam and she definitely wasn’t redeemable just because she was gay. Ilia has admitted her distaste for using violence, but has simultaneously admitted that it has been the only way to help the Faunus that she's seen. She sees humans as either outright aggressive towards faunus or complacent about the abuse they receive, and perceives that the only way to stop this is by inspiring fear in the human's hearts. She has clearly been led to believe that these actions, as much distaste as she has for them, are the only option she has to achieve justice for the Faunus, unaware the Albains are just using her and that Adam doesn't want the same thing she does. In True Colors she shows her, uh, true colors when Blake bests her in combat: really her anger is a mask to cover her feelings of sadness, fear and helplessness over not really knowing how to save her people. Once this mask is broken, she ultimately makes the right decision and defects from the White Fang, opting to instead help her friend.

Adam was one of the bad guys I thought was even a bigger deal than Salem or had the potential to be, volume 3's encounter was the best scene with adam, just the two lines "I didn't want this, I wanted equality!" "What you want, Is impossible!" that wasent an abusive ex, that was someone so driven about his races survival and to prosper zealot thinking that humans are the one thing thats bad in this world and that there is no way the two could co exist, when he slapped blake i didn't see an abusive ex, i saw someone who had just heard heresy by someone he cared for with such anger that all he could do is slap her for how naive he thinks she sounds. ty Miles and Kerry, you've actually butchered the two characters I was invested the most in to, to blubbering idiots that are now just placeholders instead of characters .

  • When Adam cut off Yangs arm he left her with a scar but he took something away from her; her identity as "The strong one". She became afraid, timid, and accepted she lost something that wont come back. When Adam was branded he was left with a scar, but the experience took away his identity in a more literal way, not just changing his face but it also branded him, a declaration to anyone who saw it that this "thing" is property of the SDC. Yang and Adam mirror each other so much with their attitude and experiences so much they basically have the same semblance, and that's why I hate how Adam was treated. A more meaningful end would have been if, when Yang caught the sword it damaged her arm a bit, maybe cutting into her palm and getting lodged in, then seeing an opening she uses her free hand to do a hook and crushes Adam's hand. Adam's semblance needs him to channel the power he gathers through a weapon (apparently but hey sure let's just roll with it) but now his hand is crippled, he can't use his semblance because he can't even pick up his sword without it damaging him more. This does a few things. 1, Yang defeats Adam without having to kill him. 2, Adam has no way to fight, his whole ideal is that strength is all but now he is helpless and unable to even resist. This is when we can get deep with RWBY and do something, develop character. Adam is at the mercy of yang, a human, the same people who took away a part of him, and seeing this yang looks down at Adam with pity, and maybe even regret. She has done the same thing to Adam as he did to her and Blake. All of this can happen if at this moment Yang asks one question "Adam, were you really just afraid?". Adam has been wearing the Grim mask not as a symbol, not to make humans fear faunus, but to hide the fact that he's been afraid ever since he was branded. Yang can mention how their semblances are alike, and so their personalities should be similar. They can take a hit, a punch, a cut, dismemberment, branding, and push all that pain back at the people who hurt them. But where as Yang feels that pain, takes it in, Adam doesn't, he is afraid of being hurt. This can spark a moment where blake realizes that when she left Adam, she hurt him and maybe was the final push that drove him off the deep end. And after all of it, adam realizes that he has nothing, not even his strength, and yang and Blake leave him to regret all he's done. This is just my shitty fan fiction writing so if you think it's stupid that's fine but lemme know what you all think.

    @kanokun18@kanokun185 жыл бұрын
    • It's a good idea in premise and, down the line, I'd honestly like it if Blake came to realize her own actions might have helped push Adam over the edge... but the problem is that, in all honesty, I still don't think it would have ended any differently even if done this way. I think Adam's the type who would have just lashed out even harder at having all his insecurities dragged out like that and would have tried to backstab them as they left - I think being left alive or pitied would have just made it all the worse for him because, by taking his pride away even further, he has nothing left to lose in continuing to try and kill them. Don't get me wrong - I like the idea of your exchange and I think it would have made the final encounter a lot more meaningful... but I just don't think it would have changed Adam's fate. It'd highlight what made Adam what he was and drive home Sun's point about how Blake's running only ever caused the very pain she claimed to try and prevent, but I don't think it would have made Adam give up or regret his actions; he'd just be more angry.

      @mitchellbaran7917@mitchellbaran79175 жыл бұрын
    • @@mitchellbaran7917 I do agree this is highly possible. My issue with how the show presented it didn't give us full context of Adam and the meaning of his scar. When the brand was revealed most comments I saw on it were along the lines of yeah Adam has a scar we already guessed that. But by forcing out his insecurities we see adam in a new light, we dont have to agree with him and his unhealthy methods of dealing with pain but it's good to know that Adam had a true motivation for his extremism and spite. If it were just a regular battle scar then yeah Adam would be a very bland character. Adam's death on screen wasn't satisfying (at least for me) because he still got to die as the man who was stronger than the two girls, but if he died in the way you propose then he dies as a weak man, solidifying that the girls are now stronger and better than him because they took the pain, they endured it, and instead of killing Adam in desperation they did it as a farewell to the grief he caused.

      @kanokun18@kanokun185 жыл бұрын
    • @@kanokun18 IDK - to me, it seemed like Adam using that scar was more showing how *little* he actually cared about the SDC or the faunus/White Fang cause compared to just doing "an eye for an eye." Hell, he even says he cares more about what Blake did to him than anyone else before - the scar's meaning here simply seems to be how what she did to him is something even less acceptable, given how he no longer seems to care about hiding it anymore in the face of his hate for her. I guess what I'm saying for me is that the scar counts as a *reason,* perhaps, but not actually a "motivation" so much as an "excuse." For all intents and purposes, it was simply his excuse to lash out at the world the same as the White Fang's cause was - I don't actually think who hurt him really mattered in the long run so much as the fact that he was hurt by *someone,* and he couldn't stand that fact. And that, in a way, is almost more tragic to me because it's almost like he either doesn't know or doesn't care who it is he actually hates - he just wants the world to hurt because it's better than him being hurt. If you ask me, whether or not the man dies "strong" or "weak" is irrelevant because it's more personal preference on that count rather than one being a superior version - mentally speaking, the man could be argued as *always* being weak in how he could never accept the world for how it is; he always had to either control it or burn what he couldn't. To me, Adam proved he was a weak man the moment he failed to let Blake go the first time, much less his refusal to accept her many offers to just walk away - I may prefer the idea of it being shown how pitiful he was when stripped of his control, but I also get the idea of dying "on his feet" so to speak showed how he was still dangerous even after everything he lost; I may not have preferred that outcome, but I still get why it was done. Like I said before, I think the only real missed opportunity was not having Blake make the realizations you suggested and, by extension, how it could have tied into the overall volume if she did. Like the Joker and Batman, Blake played a role in creating her own monster - even though Adam made his own choices and is ultimately responsible for them, Blake still had at least a contributing part in Adam going from "ruthless" to "unhinged" in how much her abandonment hurt him. Blake does many things in her encounters with Adam - she critiques him lambasts him, she warns him, she pleads him to stop… but she never once *apologizes* to him or owns up to the fact she hurt him at all. And that’s not even saying I think Adam deserves an apology - in my mind he didn’t deserve to even be spared at Haven… but as a certain author once noted, forgiveness isn’t about if someone deserves it; about making peace and having that closure. And Blake never does - she never acknowledges the fact she caused him pain; only the fact Adam couldn't move on from it. And I see *that* as a missed opportunity because, in addition to a chance of showing off what they had that Adam lacked (a willingness to face and accept pain or hurt), it would have also been a great tie-in for both the volume and Monty Oum's own message that people need to *keep moving forward* past all the pain and hardship, no matter how bad it gets, or otherwise it can consume them like Adam. To me, *that* was the real shortcoming of the fight - not that Adam died or even that how he died was bad, but rather that it missed the chance to really drive home it's season-wide (if not series-wide) message with it.

      @mitchellbaran7917@mitchellbaran79175 жыл бұрын
    • @@mitchellbaran7917 I completely agree with you there. It's not so much i'm upset about Adam being more of a fleshed out character but the fact that if his story and the actions taken here are more meaningful then it helps Blake and Yang grow more. To make a story interesting and exciting the villains and or antagonist need to be that as well but it didn't feel that way with how the show presented the fight here (at least in my opinion). There was no real moment of tension that made me lean forward in my seat, racking my brain trying to think who will actually come out on top. And you are right not once did Blake ever just solemnly look at Adam and just say she did hurt him and apologize, and even though he's hurt so many people that all she did was believe he was a monster just like how humans thought Faunus were. Anyways while I can't change what happened it is still nice to discuss and theorize the what-ifs with people and I do hope next volume Blake and Yang have more development along with the rest of the group.

      @kanokun18@kanokun185 жыл бұрын
    • I would've loved to see this but like Baran says . . . his fate was sealed. Adam had what seems like a spiraling infinite amount of hatred and spite. He's the kind of guy that would never give up no matter how hard you shame or crush him. It's fucking tragic to see a character with such will as a lost antagonist who saw violence as the only answer. When Adam said "No one has ever hurt me the way you have, Blake" he meant he's only ever been hurt physically in "all sorts of ways" but never emotionally. Adam fears pain and what he felt he didn't know how to deal with so he went mad. The analogy you made with Yang and Adam's semblances was perfect, it's exactly what I wanted pointed out. I can picture your "shitty fan fiction" happening but Adam taking a suicidal lunge at Yang as soon as they turn around. As to who takes him down I'm not sure. I feel as if team RWBY should've been together to face him. Ruby slicing off a limb or killing him. Either way, his body is left there . . . alone, either to reflect or to have his life flash before his eyes.

Really would have liked him to explain the SDC branding, maybe have flashbacks to his past of him and Blake, and just make it so cool. I feel like there’s a large part of his character/backstory we never explored.

    • IDK - for me, the only thing mysterious or awesome about him was his design. Personality-wise, nothing about him came across as very endearing IMHO - his callousness to both the train-crew in the Black trailer and to his own men when Cinder sacrificed them with the Breach; his raging spite in how he implied he helped bring down Beacon, cripple Vale and plunge the world into chaos *just* to get to Blake? And those are just from when Monty was showrunner, much less after M&K took over. Hell, his revealing the brand seemed more to illustrate how *little* he actually cared about it - that his driving force was simply people hurting him in general and hurting them back in turn, rather than actually caring about justice or rightness (or at least the fact he tells Blake he cares more about what she did then even the ones who hurt him before seems to suggest as much). To me, him dying doesn't feel like it was just to make Yang and Blake closer - I think was also to show some people just can't be stopped sometimes; that some people just can't walk away until it kills them. His own spite and inability to let go got him killed - if anything were to be a waste of potential, it's that Blake never seemed to see how her hurting Adam played a role in unhinging him, or that Yang never acknowledged how she could have ended up like Adam had she let spite and bitterness consume her. But his death itself? That IMHO feels more like a bad man reaping what he'd sown.

    • @@melodypond6468 "He’s had what, like, two amazing fight scenes and now all of a sudden he’s taking a backseat for convenient nonsensical back talk from Ruby" - Dude, he just learned the guy he's trusted for years never had a real plan for victory beyond an endless stalemate and that his daughter-ditching sister was arguably right about them being better off going it alone in the world. Couple that with his general depression issues over his Semblance "cursing" everyone around him with his presence and it feels kinda hard to say he wouldn't start hitting rock bottom. I don't see how a guy can be "a waaay better character than that" when he's basically had the one thing that kept him going/the only thing he thought made it worth this get kicked out from under him. "nonsensical back talk from Ruby because they don’t know how to make her actually tough" - I don't think they're *trying* to make her sound "tough"; I think it's just showing she finally got fed up with her supposed idols. For ages now I've seen people criticize how much faith she kept in Ozpin despite all the lies he's told and how she idolized a drunkard like Qrow - yet now that they'f finally run out the warranty on the "teacher/idol" card, it's unrealistic of her to call them out on it? You can call it obnoxious or self-righteous or even hypocritical, but at the same time it's kind of hard to blame her for taking charge after finally getting those rose-tinted lenses off (no pun intended). And if she's making mistakes in how she goes about it, well, then that's something for her to learn and recognize later on - believe you me, I *want* someone to call her out on how I thought she was outright hypocritical with her "we need to work together regardless of if we don't trust each-other" bit she offered Cordovin when she didn't do that for Ozpin. But that doesn't mean I'm going to decry it off the bat when it's finally given Ruby something a lot of people always asked for; a definite character flaw to potentially explore - I'll see what they do with it and the comments on it *before* I go and say it was a bad idea or not.

  • When Yang said "You, or the person you pretended to be?", that was the final nail in Adam's coffin. With Adam pre-Volume 3, Yang's words would've been "You, or the person you used to be?" The Adam we were presented with in his first introduction and how Blake talked about him was always that he believed in what he did, and became corrupted as a result, NOT that he was a hypocrite or a liar. He became evil because he truly believed he was right, and that was what made his character so compelling from Day 1. I don't know how the very people who personally worked with Monty on Adam could've dropped the ball so hard with him. They had so many chances to turn back to the White Fang revolutionary angle, but with each Volume they just double down on the psycho ex route and just give little pieces of his ACTUAL intended character. I'm just glad it's over now. Volume 6 had a really good start, RT deserves that, and the Adam fights these two episodes are the best in Maya yet, but they really messed up this last stretch.

    @SwitchbackCh@SwitchbackCh5 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly right. Also, everyone's forgetting that volume 2 actually made a point out of making Blake seem fond of Adam; she was remorseful she had to leave, not because Adam abused her but because she couldn't bear helping him while he was becoming a bloodthirsty terrorist along with the rest of the White Fang (which started as a sort of civil rights movement). At the start of vol.2 (after the Tukson scene), the first thing we were shown was a drawing of Adam in Blake's notebook, accompanied by *nostalgic* music. For me that implied, more than anything, that Adam was her mentor and that she perhaps had a crush on him, but that the two hadn't been romantically involved. And later in that volume when she talks about him, she paints him in a positive light, saying that "his perfect world was not for everyone". That would be kind of odd if he had been abusive, right? Sheesh, it's *almost* like Blake was conflicted about Adam and the White Fang, and as if her protest that "There is no such thing as pure evil!" was justified at least in some kind of way. But things are much easier now for inattentive viewers: There's good (team RWBY) and then there's evil (Salem, Cinder, Adam). Ah, and giving people (who volunteered) the ability to transform into birds at will with no side effects is also very, very bad, apparently.

      @FrostyAUT@FrostyAUT5 жыл бұрын
    • @@FrostyAUT oh wow i forgot about that, I do think Adam has changed since vol 3. I think both sides have their points, They could have had Adam knocked out by Yangs attack, then sent to Atlas and have his back story told at the place it looks like it started. Adam did try to reach for the sword and kill them from the start, I wouldn't say Blake and Yang are as bad as Adam for killing him, since he wasn't begging like the Schnee guard and all three of them did not have aura so I would say it was in the heat of the moment and for self defense not actively hunting to kill him. I can agree with some of the points eruption fang made with Adam and the missed back story, but I also think he misses some points on what happened and why they ended up doing what they did in the fight.

    • "I don't know how the very people who personally worked with Monty on Adam could've dropped the ball so hard with him" - Actually, that's the biggest irony a lot of people seem to miss; by all accounts, Monty *approved* this path. In V2, Adam showed no remorse or even anger over all the White Fang that Cinder sacrificed for the Breach (a deliberate false-flag attack against a kingdom that wasn't even involved in faunus abuse like Atlas was and wasn't even a plan of his own/the White Fangs). And *Monty himself* was the one to first plan out Adam attacking Blake in V3, so he'd also seemingly green-lit Adam's role in the attack being focused on getting to Blake - the only difference between his first version and the one we got is that he originally intended Yang to win rather than losing her arm. If Adam wasn't intended to be a monster or even self-serving/selfish, I doubt Monty would have had those scenes take place when he was still showrunner - at most Adam was probably intended to be a *tragic* figure for being consumed by spite, but ultimately not a sympathetic one since he was never shown with redeemable qualities. "The Adam we were presented with in his first introduction and how Blake talked about him was always that he believed in what he did, and became corrupted as a result" - But that's just it; how *Blake* talked about him - not anything he was shown doing but rather a second-hand account from someone who, given her lack of in-depth detail, didn't even want to remember what bad sides she knew of. Hell, V3 even directly addresses this by having Adam openly declare he never intended for co-existence - or rather that the person Blake remembered was just a mask he wore to be more appealing. How is Blake supposed to remember him as a liar when the whole point of lying is for the other person to *not* know the truth about you? By all accounts, Blake's nostalgia glasses could just be argued as having blinded her to just how bad Adam truly was.

    • @@mitchellbaran7917 You assume the only reason Adam would attack Blake is because he's her obsessive stalker ex-boyfriend, when it's obvious that the White Fang simply doesn't tolerate defectors and generally assassinates them. That, and Blake now being on the side of the humans that Adam so hates, in addition to actively getting in the way of White Fang activity, makes it entirely plausible he'd want to kill her. So the problem isn't that he wanted to kill her - the problem is WHY he wanted to kill her.

      @FrostyAUT@FrostyAUT5 жыл бұрын
    • @@FrostyAUT It's more because of how Adam utterly brushed off the way Cinder sacrificed a ton of White Fang - his own men at that - in a false-flag attack (a plan that wasn't even his but also wasn't against a kingdom that condoned faunus exploitation like Atlas arguably does with the SDC). That just doesn't strike me as the kind of man who operates with "the cause" in mind as opposed to an agenda of his own. IMHO, the whole "White Fang simply doesn't tolerate defectors" bit feels more like what Adam *drip-feeds* his followers as the justification for his actions, like he did with Ilia and her team. He's basically just pretties it up with lines about the cause when in reality it's more because of his own grudges. Again, the way Adam isn't remorseful or hesitant or even angry about what Cinder does with his men feels like it shows just how little about the faunus cause this is, compared to venting his own hatred on people.

  • I have a bad feeling of the future of RWBY. Since they have no problem destroying the potential of a character with Adam and only focusing on his relationship with Blake and using his death as a development for Blake and Yang, then that means there is serious threat to Sun dying. Since Rooster Teeth only sees potential in characters based on their relationship with other characters, the plot of a future volume will most likely be Sun Wukong dies tragically and Blake is torn up about it. Yang is there to comfort and then they kiss because that was the only thing standing in the way of #Bumblebee4lifeshipping. Out with the old in with the new! Kill off straight relationships and replace with all gay! Except for Nora and Ren cause they cute. It's weird because earlier this season they did the best representation of LGBT I had seen in RWBY with the lesbian marriage and it wasn't a big plot point it was just there like no big thing. That should be what the representation is like. Just normal everyday life. Nothing special, just natural and organic. Since his weapon like a large amount of other weapons is a two part weapon, so instead of running to grab Blake's broken sword he should have used his own weapon. If, his semblance can be used with any weapon like you would suspect it to be he should be able to use his gun as the catalyst for it instead of his sword. Just a small thing I though I should mention.

    @Finile1268@Finile12685 жыл бұрын
    • Putting aside the possibility he ran out of ammo for his gun, Adam's sword is arguably more important because that's the weapon his Semblance relies on for it's counter-strike - if he could just use any weapon (or at least to equal effectiveness), there'd be no reason to even carry one, much less a spicific type like his sword (my personal theory is that the type of weapon determines how the counterattack power manifests - and with a sword he can cast ranged "shockwave-type" attacks and absorb blows easily... though again, that's just my theory). Lacking a sword meant losing the ability to use his Semblance to it's best effect - plus, as Yang just then demonstrated by taking Adam's sword, how is letting someone (Blake) get back their weapon ever a good idea?

Her scythe was cradled in her arms and Ozpin recognised the subtle tightening of her grip. “We're nothing like you. How could you say that?” “Because you've been in the exact same situation I have been this whole time, Miss Rose. And you did exactly what I did. You had the option to tell the world about me, my lies, prove it with the relic, and get it safely to Atlas whilst preparing the whole world for Salem's next steps. It was the obvious choice, was it not?” His grin stretched wider and his eyes flashed with something like bitter triumph when Ruby's eyes widened. “Yet somehow… not. I wonder if any of you have had more luck explaining, justifying why, than I have.” Qrow growled and turned away. There could have been some great symbolism with his Rose sigil gradually losing petals as he slipped further over the edge until nothing is left but a thorn. But the whole fairy-tail symbolism has faded into nothing but a shell where characters from folk-lore are just dropped here and there like, “Oh look! I cannot be the only one who's noticed that in bs about muh feminist empowerment female characters are usually athletic with amazing swords and weapons while men shoot lasers (kyoukai no Kanata comes in mind ATM) I surely cannot be the only one who's noticed that female characters rarely fight strong male characters but other women or unknown men, to the point of cliche, I think it's a trope on TV tropes called Designated girl fight. Women fight other women and don't you dare make men fight women and win. I hate how male characters are discarded to make the female characters more valuable for muh empowerment. I fucking hate this BS. It's just so unrealistic and sets so many low quality expectations, and I find it incredibly disingenous and frustrating and I start hating bitchy female characters (like Blake) for beating up or being bitches to male characters for the obvious power imbalances the author's write. If I were to do something, I wouldn't nerf my male characters. I'd jack my female ones and make them tall, use steroids and testosterone to make them jacked and add prosthetics in the mix to make them stronger. And if I wanted to go for the muh feminist equality I'd not discard the male characters, I'd make them suffer through rape or sexual assault so it doesn't look disingenuous and make them seem useless or nerfed.

    • As for the few "good male characters", notice that they are good because they orient themselves towards women and helping women. Jaune is pretty much living to carry on Pyrrha's wishes or whatever, for what he owes her, after she died to protect Beacon. Ren pretty much babysits Nora and was expected to do this from a young age. Qrow has feelings towards Summer and also for Yang and Ruby. Oscar.... Well, I could argue RoseGarden because that is the ship which RT is pushing and that he lives to help her. Not saying that these are parasitic relationships. Nora likely helps Ren as he does her, Pyrrha trained Jaune -sweaty enough to get him to take off his shirt,- so that the could get stronger. Qrow is Ruby and Yang's Uncle (yes even Yangs, I know right, I totally forgot) so of course he will look after her. Oscar and Ruby are just friends (for now) and don't have much interactions. But generally, for a male to be "good" he has to be of service to women. The only alternative is for him to be a comic relief like early Jaune was.

  • I left this comment on another video but it bares repeating. Killing off Adam is one of the worst storytelling decisions I have ever seen. The reason why people (including myself) hate Volume 5 is its lack of effort. Adam has the same problem. Is Adam an unredeemable monster who just wants to kill people? If so, then RT complete failed to create that type of character with Adam, he alone is responsible for the destruction of the white fang and he is also responsible for Blake becoming part of team RWBY in the first, and let's be honest, the white fang probably would have helped Cinder in the fall of Beacon regardless of Adam, for all intended purposes Adam had mostly a positive impact on remnant. He didn't even kill any of the heros or there loved ones. His biggest and longest lasting impact on the heroes is cutting of someone's arm, whop-de-do. And he also fails as a sympathetic villain ether because after he (sort of) chops off Blake's head, all of his possible redeeming quiltys were give to Ilia until an episode before his death. Plus now if they introduce a fanuas descrimation story in Atlas, it will be after everything involving the white fang has concluded (and the interesting things that could have come with). And on top of everything else not only has Blake's storyline completely concluded and now has no story arc left in her, but the motivating factor and big bad of that story died without having made any real impact. RNJR and Weiss never even saw him for crying out, Ruby never saw the man who chopped off her sister arm. Adam is the description of wasted potential, he shouldn't be and he wouldn't be if they put in the slightest bit of effort to properly develop his character. They failed in every way at creating a good villain out of Adam, and that makes me angry. Killing of Adam doesn't fix the problem, it just makes all the problems even worse since now they definitely can't be fixed, which they could have if the writers put in any actual effort. Adam's death is worse than any of the mistakes in Volume 5 because of the huge waste of everything that came before and everything that could have came in the future. The writers took the easy and lazy way out, and now RWBY will forever suffer as a result.

    • "Is Adam an unredeemable monster who just wants to kill people? If so, then RT complete failed to create that type of character with Adam" - How so? The man was callous about the civilian train-crew in the Black trailer - he outright brushed off sacrificing scores of his own men in V2 for Cinder's false-flag attack/the Breach instead of cutting ties with her for it - he pretty heavily implied in V3 that he joined the takedown of Beacon *just* to get to Blake... and that's all stuff done when *Monty* was showrunner. Come V4-5 and we see Adam becoming even more tyrannical in persecuting Blake's parents for her dumping him, murdering his former idol Sienna in cold blood, declares immediately beforehand his intent to commit the *genocide and enslavement of mankind* and tries to suicide-bomb himself and a large group of faunus when it doesn't work out; at what point in any of this, during *either* showrunner's time, was Adam not portrayed as anything else but a bad man at best and an outright monster at worst? "he alone is responsible for the destruction of the white fang and he is also responsible for Blake becoming part of team RWBY in the first" - That doesn't make him any less of a monster, though; his actions backfiring on him doesn't make him better - if anything they just further establish him as bad off, because it means his precedent for self-destructive tendencies was around *long* before V4 ever happened. "and let's be honest, the white fang probably would have helped Cinder in the fall of Beacon regardless of Adam" - That's not what Sienna Kahn implied; by all accounts, her grudge wasn't with *all* of humanity - just the ones that actively oppressed them (the SDC, their Atlas supporters, the system that allowed for it all, etc). Much as she touted an eye for an eye, even she didn't approve of Adam's scorched-earth tactics - hell, the fact Adam was so willing to toss his own men away for *someone else's* false-flag plan seems to say a lot as-is about how much his agenda differed from the White Fang's leadership. "Plus now if they introduce a fanuas descrimation story in Atlas, it will be after everything involving the white fang has concluded (and the interesting things that could have come with)" - I don't see how; dealing with the White Fang isn't the same as dealing with faunus prosecution - it was treating a symptom, not the cause. The White Fang problem was tackling a group of increasingly-radical extremists - the faunus oppression problem is dealing with a whole kingdom (the supposed good guys) turning a blind eye to their system and success being built off slavery, which would focus more on how to fix an issue without becoming another problem like the WF did. "And on top of everything else not only has Blake's storyline completely concluded and now has no story arc left in her, but the motivating factor and big bad of that story died without having made any real impact" - I disagree for one simple reason; Blake was one of the ones to kill him. After trying so hard to either avoid or prevent it for much of the series, Blake not only has blood on her hands but on her partner's - the blood of someone she once cared about, at that. IMHO, that's not something a person just walks off - even in death, Adan may yet still haunt her as the person she, despite her best efforts, was ultimately forced to kill in order to survive; the man who, with his last act, forced her to compromise herself and her morals. And yes, I do understand this is speculation on what may or may not get explored, but my point is that it's not like Blake's story or even Adam's has nowhere left to go. "RNJR and Weiss never even saw him for crying out, Ruby never saw the man who chopped off her sister arm" - I think that was more *Adam's* fault than anything else - the man was obsessed with Blake alone; he didn't care about anyone else, so there was no real reason for them to face him. They may have had grievances with the man, but he himself lacked any reason to want an encounter with them, much less be present at any opportunities to fight them. "Adam is the description of wasted potential, he shouldn't be and he wouldn't be if they put in the slightest bit of effort to properly develop his character" - I disagree for one big reason; "character development" refers to how a character changes as the story progresses - it isn't exclusive to a character bettering themselves, much less becoming likable people. To me, Adam is the same vein as characters like Fate/Stay Night's Kirei Kotomine - he's a figure you could call "tragic", but ultimately not one you can call sympathetic; he has moments where you feel for him, but they don't make him any less of a bad or monstrous person. That being said, Kotomine is definitely a far better and more well-developed character, but the point remains that at the end of the day he isn't and never was intended to be a sympathetic figure - there was no saving him and the only way to stop him was in death. Simply putl tust because they don't deviate from being monsters doesn't mean a writer failed to "properly develop" them. "Killing of Adam doesn't fix the problem, it just makes all the problems even worse since now they definitely can't be fixed" - I disagree, given how any other outcome IMHP would feel inconsistent with Adam's lack of redeeming moments and (personally speaking) make it feel kind of cheep, if not cringy, to have him just keep trying to kill Blake without consequence. Likewise, it's actually pretty easy to have things "fixed" by showing his death have an impact on Blake (who showed grief and remorse for him even after all he did) and Yang (who worryingly showed far less remorse despite the more brutal act of stabbing Adam in the back). It's less a "lack of effort" to me so much as that Adam reaped what he sowed - the only failure would be if nothing is done to build off his death having an impact like Pyrrha's did.

    • @@mray4784 I think you've kind of confused my point; "unavoidable" and "solution" are two separate things IMHO - when something is unavoidable, it means it was going to happen no matter what with no real choice possible; it doesn't mean the matter was "solved" or that how it ended was good so much as that there wasn't any other way it could have happened, for better or worse. Nobody said killing was "the solution to all problems"; I only said that Adam's death was a product of *his* actions - Blake tried to make him back off; she let him go at Haven and she begged him multiple times in this fight to walk away. He didn't. And even though he deserved what was coming to him IMHO, neither Blake nor Yang nor anyone else celebrates his death as good or even "the solution" - because it wasn't; Blake and Yang have blood on their hands now, and they're going to have to live with that. To make a long story short; I never said killing Adam was "the solution", much less the ideal one. Simply that, by a product of who Adam himself was and the kind of character he displayed, there wasn't any other outcome possible.

    • @@hughmanatee7626 "Who were the most interesting villains to you?" - For me, it's Torchwick and Neo. IMHO, Torchwick not only the same "cool design" and "competent fighter" advantages Adam had, but he felt more interesting because he wasn't just some genocidal nut or anti-kingdom mastermind - he was more a savvy opportunist and capitalist; a guy with Luthor's clean-cut sense of business but the Joker's flamboyant sense of style (only *competently* done in contrast to Dawn of Justice's version). He was a guy looking out for number one and he did what it took to do it - he wanted "the good things in life"; he wasn't excessively bloodthirsty like Adam or a megalomaniac (or at least not a huge one) like Cinder, so he came across as a bit less cliché or caricature-like to me. Or at least that's what drew me in. In that same vein, I see Neo like the Mercy-Harley cross to Torchwick's Luthor-Joker - attentive and dangerous, yet teasing and cruel. Additionally, she had the unique aspect of emoting solely through body-language (expressions, eye-color changes, etc); something that arguably enhanced her character in a way that played up to her charm in contrast to Adam's mask (since while masks have the "mysterious" vibe to them, it's very easy for the reveal to feel like a letdown if you wait too long to do it). At that point, her semblance's "glasswork clone" ability (which has one of the widest-ranging applications next to Weiss' Glyphs) are just icing on the cake (or I guess the cherry on the sundee would be a better term XD). "Personally Adam was #1 cause of his over all importance" - IDK; most of that comes across as just the design rather then his characterization, IMHO. And as for authority, the way he brushed off all those White Fang deaths (his own men no less) that Cinder caused in V2 with the Breach (a plan Adam/The White Fang didn't even come up with and were waging against a Kingdom that didn't even condone faunus exploitation like Atlas does with the SCD) felt like it killed the idea of him being some kind of "noble demon" as opposed to just plain bloodthirsty. And personally, I never saw him as being all that connected to the moon - Weiss and Ruby were given as many (if not more) scenes connecting them to it. "She had design, mystery and power like Adam but she was unnecessarily EVIL!" - So was Adam, IMHO. The man was callous to an extreme even during Monty's time as showrunner - to the civilians on the train, to what Cinder did with his own men in the Breach - like I said before, "bloodthirsty" seemed to embody the guy well past the point of even a "noble demon" justification. And that in turn is another reason why I'm not really angry for Adam to die the way he did - the fact Cinder survived what Raven did to her felt like plot-armor to me; I think I'd have called bullshit if Adam fell into the same vein.

    • @@mitchellbaran7917 Torchwick and Neo are good picks but because CRWBY decided to kill off Torchwick and made Neo disappear for soo long, I stopped caring for them. I'd say those two should be what every standard villain should be. Capable, stylish, clever, realistic and with personality. Good pick. Concerning that arrangement with Cinder: There was no clear indication of Adam knowing he could take on Cinder and the resources she provided was backed by her power. By the looks of it Cinder's employers seem wealthy and capable so Adam chose to agree than to potentially die with nothing. Cinder did say "Our plan will be beneficial to both of us or one of us." So instead of being killed off and having his men taken from him, he took Cinder's offer. Not much of a choice there. What do you think a logical Adam that actually cared for the White Fang would've done there? Although Adam maybe the one with the most blood on his hands you can't ignore Cinder. She takes shortcuts and uses others to get her power, minimizing the blood she sheds herself, leaving it to others. She was the one to bring chaos into Beacon to begin with. Although, it was for Salem. At least we have some sort of motivation for Adam to be the way he is. Cinder is just evil for the sake of the plot, nothing else. I agree Cinder should've just died after her encounter with Raven but what happened to Adam was just weird and felt forced. Instead of saying he wants to get even with Blake, he says he can't get over her and complains about how she left him for Yang? I'm sorry but what the fuck? Why does he even care to know Yang's name? If this were the same Adam we knew from volumes 1-3 he wouldn't even remember who Yang is or her name! That's a whole other mess of it's own. As for Adam's connection to the moon: His iconic attack "moonslice" is what he had going for him and it's not like any other villains had attacks designed with rose petals and the moon. It was exclusive to heroes like Ruby and Qrow that's what made him special.

    • @@hughmanatee7626 "Torchwick and Neo are good picks but because CRWBY decided to kill off Torchwick and made Neo disappear for soo long, I stopped caring for them" - I think that has more to do with Monty's side then M&K, though; Monty originally didn't plan for Torchwick to last past V1, and he created Neo from wholecloth not even two weeks before her debut episode so anything having to do with her was not in the grand plan beforehand. If anything, I thank the CRWBY for daring to bring Neo back when she probably wasn't meant to have a big role before and for giving Torchwick more screen-time then Monty originally planned for. "There was no clear indication of Adam knowing he could take on Cinder and the resources she provided was backed by her power" - But that's just it, though; that's *no different than the SDC* - there's no clear indication the White Fang could have taken them and the resources they provide are backed by their own power via contracts with Atlas, but they do so anyway because *that's what their cause is about.* Adam making a deal like that with someone like Cinder flies in the face of their goals. "By the looks of it Cinder's employers seem wealthy and capable so Adam chose to agree than to potentially die with nothing" - But again; If Adam really felt the White Fang's cause was that righteous, *he shouldn't have cared about that* - he'd have been as steadfast against her as the White Fang claim to be against the SDC... but he wasn't. Instead, he showed no remorse or anger when she threw away his men for a false-flag attack on a kingdom that wasn't even supporting faunus exploitation like Atlas arguably does. What Cinder did was just as bad as what the White Fang propagate the SDC to do - and Adam went right along with it; that doesn't really paint a picture of a guy who cares about the cause as opposed to what it can do for him. If Adam really cared for the White Fang, I'd think he'd have chosen to *walk away* then to get in bed with a human - much less one that basically embodies every vain, prideful and self-serving aspect of mankind the White Fang claim to hate. Hell, even Sienna Kahn - the person who *made* the White Fang anti-human to begin with - balked at Adam dealing with the likes of Cinder. "Although Adam maybe the one with the most blood on his hands you can't ignore Cinder.She takes shortcuts and uses others to get her power, minimizing the blood she sheds herself, leaving it to others" - But so did Adam. - He took the shortcut of killing people wholesale to get a message across (even Sienna herself ends up killed like this) - He used others to get power (like how he manipulated people such as Blake and Ilia to gain support). - He minimized the direct bloodshead by his own hands to look more "upstanding" with others doing it for him (he gave control of his subordinates to Cinder and Torchwick against Vale, or assigned hit-jobs to Ilia - even against other faunus like the Belladonnas). "At least we have some sort of motivation for Adam to be the way he is. Cinder is just evil for the sake of the plot, nothing else" - Not necessarily; nothing Adam did spoke of anything that could be justified with what we know, even up to this point. Adam's past only explains him joining the White Fang, and even then only as a backstory rather than a present-tense motivator - they don't explain his callousness or antipathy to civilians or even his fellow faunus, much less the more spiteful side he shows later on. It feels like Blake summed him up perfectly in calling him "the embodiment of spite" - like Cinder, he seemed to be evil just for it's own sake rather then having any deep motivator. "I agree Cinder should've just died after her encounter with Raven but what happened to Adam was just weird and felt forced" - I disagree for one simple fact; Adam's already been established as incapable of letting go of grudges. The moment he got away from Haven, it was basically a guarantee he'd keep chasing her - hell, it was a guarantee he'd hate her even more for stripping him of everything else he had. IDK about the "weird" part, but it certainly didn't feel "forced" to me - he'd already proven he wouldn't stop until someone died; the only question was whether he'd go first or them. "Instead of saying he wants to get even with Blake, he says he can't get over her and complains about how she left him for Yang?" - I thought he *did* say he wanted to get even with/make Blake pay for hurting him? Hell, when he first attacked her, he cursed the day she came into his life and blamed her for taking everything from her - his comment about how much she hurt him is more him saying why he *first* hated her; now it's just the first reason in what's become a pile of "never my fault" reasons. "Why does he even care to know Yang's name?" - Because *Blake* cares; he said in V3 that he was going to make anyone and everyone she cared about suffer for leaving him - the fact she's someone Blake has *any* concern for is enough in his eyes. Like Blake said in V4; Embodiment of spite. "If this were the same Adam we knew from volumes 1-3 he wouldn't even remember who Yang is or her name!" - I beg to differ. This is the guy who cared nothing about civilians who were in the wrong place at the wrong time (V1), had no complaint throwing away his own men for someone else's agenda against a kingdom that did him no wrong (V2), and helped cripple that kingdom just to get to one person (V3); IMHO, that sounds like *exactly* the kind of person who would care about killing Yang for the sole fact that she's someone who's death or suffering will hurt a person who'd hurt him. It follows the exact same train started in V1 - a man who's callous and bloodthirsty enough to do things just to spite someone or something he doesn't like. "As for Adam's connection to the moon: His iconic attack "moonslice" is what he had going for him" - Actually, from what I know, "moonslice" was what Monty called the *scene* of Adam cutting down the robot in his notes - his Semblance itself never got an official name. Even than, it arguably had more to do with the whole "samurai/ninja under the moon" theme that the image evoked rather then with Adam himself having a special connection to the moon. By contrast, a lot of characters have had scenes with the moon in them - hell, Weiss final attack in the White trailer was her diving down while the Moon was behind her and even Cinder had more connection with her being framed by the moon in the V2 intro; it was far from unique to him even among the villains, much less something that made him special among them.

  • Someone, please ask Miles and Kerry at RTX how different Ruby and the rest are from Ozpin if they believe that they can just break the law because "they're saving the world". I mean, if Ozpin's actions are supposed to be morally dubious, how is following his example any better? Also, that other question about killing defenseless enemies should be raised. Perhaps someone should also raise the question of how Yang and Blake were different from Adam when they seemed to apply the same moral principle: use violence and murder because it gets results Regarding sympathy for villains, I'm now afraid for Mercury. I mean, his scene about his father was cool. I'm already expecting them to somehow torture him to his version of "death by BB gun". Maybe they’ll decapitate him with a wooden spoon Adam's face reveal just felt so empty, I agree. I would have wanted it to appear much earlier in the series, to establish why he hated humans (or at least the Schnee Dust Company). However, what the hell was he doing later on? He was fighting against his own kind, and he was fighting against Blake, not Weiss. What the hell happened to his motivation? Still, I wouldn't mind if he changed over time and abandoned his ideals. However, I want to see this change, this descent into his own tragic end. It would be great to see how his story would end with a realization that he had truly lost, not just physically but also morally. I would have wanted him to realize in his dying moments that he had turned his back on the very people he used to fight for Alternatively, Adam became so blinded by revenge that he would pursue every chance he would get to spite humans and especially the Schnees, even if it went against common sense. His end in this route would have been to die just before he got to his target, just a few steps away I need to see how the heroes get consequences for their actions. Otherwise, it is a major writing flaw. What limits do these characters have to operate within? I was at least expecting that Adam take down at least one of the two, but Yang only got a scratch on her arm. I’m not sure if it has been severely damaged, even Still, shipping has greatly damaged the quality of the writing. There was much more to Adam than his relationship with Blake, whether romantic or mentor-apprentice. Saying that his persona was just some facade would have worked if we actually saw that Adam was really a different person instead of the extremist that we saw in the earlier versions. I mean, he made no qualms about using violence to bring about Faunus rights. What would have worked instead was someone like Ghira. If Adam constantly made a show of how he regretted violence, that could have been his facade, that in actuality, he reveled in violence and killing. However, we see him as some warrior who had resorted to violence in order to protect his kind. Also, even with this supposed facade, it would do nothing for the actual relationship between Adam and Blake aside from an actual clash of philosophies, unless Adam tried to impress Blake with his regret of violent actions?? Forcing a ship down our throats is the worst way to promote it. I mean, seriously, even the dialogue was puking. What was that crap about protecting each other??

  • It’s funny how the majority of people defunding this distasteful writing our the ones that can’t and will not mention the mistakes that the writers as well as the animators have made. I can’t be the only one that witness Adma... literally throw Blake’s sheath (with enough force) off the ridge to the right of the waterfall just to pop up in a different spot for the sake of the plot. Also debuffing a villain doesn’t make the main characters strong. It only promotes the idea that the protagonist was saved by the animators lack of skills. Or saved by the writer who doesn’t know the difference between consistency or pandering, like a sea turtle thinking it’s eating sea jellies but it’s choking on plastic. Like how Adam got no real hits in on Yang for the majority of the fight (acting as if his aura is just naturally fortified) for Yang’s aura to just fade as if she was enduring pain. What happened to the antagonist showing skill through combs. Because the main characters are doing just fine in that subject as if they can’t animate nor write real tension. The tension should be the action, not some snooze feast were everyone has the one liners with no come backs. (with the audience clapping while saying “Ahh you showed them”) The action of a character speaks louder and longer than some waste scene of monologue and pandering. Even with that making an antagonist one side is a biased way to make a story. If you go back to pre Monty vs post you will see how majority of (if not every) antagonist is pushed with serious changes that contradicts even the smallest choices they make in the newer volumes. You can’t move forward if you can’t take criticism. He should’ve wrote that flaw into his character (Jaune)

  • I wanna mention one particular small detail that probably says a lot more to me than it should have. Look at how gratuitous Adam's death is played: Stabbed twice from the front and back, let him stumble pathetically a bit, then falls off a cliff, hits the rock face, and then fucking spins as he lands in the water. The scene direction is clearly set up to make the character look as pathetic as possible in several means not even stemming directly from his own actions. Look at an anime like Naruto that this show clearly drew "inspiration" from for a scene like this: for the greater part, established characters or even one-offs who happened to have more dimension were killed off in ways that either emphasized those traits, ways that leave an impression as much how they left as how they entered, and this from a series with a plot device that meant their deaths weren't even totally permanent like in a lot of other shows. Adam's death doesn't remotely give off an air of subtlety or meaningfulness in how he died, nothing that ties his downfall to his actual character flaws, nor does he even go out in a scenario that fits the version of the character from back when he had untapped potential and the show seemed like it had a plan for him. He dies in a fight out in the middle of nowhere with only Yang and Blake as opponents or witnesses, and his actual death is basically designed to humiliate him, running after his weapon and then getting smacked around when he's defenseless and even when he's essentially left dead. This isn't "here's the end of Adam's story," this is "watch how the bad man gets beat around before we get rid of him from the show," which is an even harder sentiment to shake given it's juxtaposed with yet more Bumblebee teasing. It's similar to the problem I have with the newer Star Wars films: Your Villains have to give the air that they can in fact defeat your heroes for there to be any tension in the conflicts with them. Yet because you're afraid to make your heroes look even mildly incapable for one reason or another, the villains never get to win a conflict in a manner that has consequences for more than a few days (whether relatively speaking or literally, in universe or out). The thing that makes Vader so intimidating is that on top of defeating the heroes at several turns, his action have consequences that can't be and aren't undone within the movie they happen: Obi-Wan's death clearly affects Luke throughout the first and second movies, and Vader not only breaks Luke physically, but mentally with the reveal of his relation, something that clearly has Luke questioning his actions and thoughts for the rest of the saga. He's a threatening villain because even if you take the assumption that the Good Guys will win, his actions force them to go to much greater lengths to win and there's still the threat that defeating him will force the heroes to risk compromising or destroying a part of themselves to do it. But no, Adam's character has been reduced to an angry abusive ex-BF so that the characters are entirely justified in killing him after he's already lost the fight and outmatched. It's not like the mentality of an abusive character, whether authority or romantic partner, is anything complex or ripe for development or examination; that would require someone to write a character instead of a strawman cartoon villain.

Blake left him, the fanus don't want anything to do with him, Salem's pretty much done with him as he no longer has a use, he's pretty much pushed to the point of insanity that he literally kills people now just because they talk back to him, fanus or human. At this point the entire world is pretty much destroyed, all he wants now is revenge on blake because he believes his life ended up the way it did because she didn't see the world his way and wanted something different.
