5 Boxing "Rules" Meant to be BROKEN!

2024 ж. 16 Мам.

Here are common misconceptions when it comes to #boxing, where Shane breaks 5 "rules" that are meant to be broken after your beginning phase. Fundamentals are extremely important for fighters just getting started, and you can never be too good at the basics, but some of the starter cues that we get can limit our abilities. After you feel you've surpassed that beginner phase, try experimenting with the following:
1. "Don't Cross Your Feet"
2. "Power = Knockouts"
3. "Pivot Your Feet On Your Lead Hook"
4. "Don't Chicken Wing Your Arm"
5. "Extend Your Legs when Throwing Uppercuts"

  • Great advice Shane! Ive said same thing to guys i train, that at the higher levels of boxing ,the "rules" become malleable, flexible. Your last tip was spot on about the hips and power generation..Everything Begins in the hips and the energy transfers in 2 different directions, going down thru the legs to the balls of the feet to the ground And upwards rotating the shoulders and out the arms ending in the fist......The downward flow is meant to root you and is related to the term "sitting down" on ur punches , without this aspect, there is no real power developed....Great presentation as always Shane, keep up the good work!

VIDEO IDEA for ya- How to bend the rules in the official boxing RULE BOOK. What I mean is to use things like low kick feints, raising the knee for defense like in thai boxing/TKD, feinting with a backfist...Nnot sure what I can and cant get away with but I really want to test the limits of north american boxing rule book. How far can you twist your body to be facing away from your opponent etc. Theres a Cuban amateur who you probably know who inspired me to ask you this. Thanks either way bud.

    • @@manicmute9440 OR maybe, just maybe, I cross step with my front foot like Golovkin does when walking down an opponent. Maybe I don't foot-pivot with my hook because I wanna reload and use the same arm like Tyson did. Maybe in southpaw I jab and cross-step like P. Whitaker used to do to create outside angles because maybe, just maybe, I'm 5'5 and I'm sparring guys over 6 feet and most idiot coaches train you to fight guys your own size. Maybe you need to learn grammar and say "Haven't gotten them yet" since present perfect is conjugated with the past participle, not the past simple. You know, just a bunch of maybes.

  • Great video as always shane. You know the uppercut is my worst punch by far. I mainly only throw it as a distraction, or a setup - part of a combo to land a hook or a straight shot(or a roundhouse since I do muay thai). I need some small advice, and I hope to make my question clear: Whenever I throw my uppercuts, left or right(im orthodox), and throw my hips/legs into it like i would with my hooks, my punching hand ALWAYS goes WAY off target; sometimes only a little bit off target but it never travels in a straight line and that makes it useless for going past peoples guards if I cant aim it properly. Been doing muay thai well over two years, have the other boxing punches at a good proficiency level, same with my teeps and roundhouses and knees and my boxing in general(footwork, defense, offense, so on). I do need advice on this though. How do I aim the uppercut properly, make sure it travels straight upwards where I want it to go, while also giving it hip rotation? Should I tone down the amount of torque Im throwing into it? Im giving it about as much rotation as I give my hooks(but I have been good at those technique wise for well over a year or more). Also, can you do some videos on punch and kick and knee combos you find effective when you do Muay thai, kickboxing, or mma sparring? With the expectation that your sparring partner is probably gonna block the first one or two strikes with the third strike having a chance at landing. Anyway, thank you! I esp hope to get advice on my uppercut,. to add another useless weapon to my arsenal.

    • Instead of using your legs in that way, try using your torso and core into your uppercuts. Also when throwing it up close place your head to the side of the opponent not directly in the line of the punches so you won't get hit because your head is off target.

  • Another misconception is always keeping your hands up which is false due to certain stances and styles allowing you to drop the lead hand (Philly shell, cross block defense)

    @danielmoses2440@danielmoses24405 жыл бұрын
  • I'm actually a tiny bit of a chicken-wing-advocate, recognizing advantages and disadvantages. Generally, as a fighter/boxer, I don't position my elbows so low to my ribs, allowing them to flair naturally closer to 35-40 degrees, meaning that lifting my elbow a notch doesn't really hinder the strikes (I believe). I also feel that allowing a bit more lift of the elbow is a bit more mechanical and often allows for a heavier punch. That's not to say making a chambered chicken wing before striking, but allowing that slight twist in the body and the arm that rotates the elbow to the side at the end of the punch (as opposed to the "mantis punch").

  • When i started boxing i had my 2 and a half years of soo bahk do experience, and my footwork was soo good i could dodge almost anything by an inch with just footwork... Because of that, they made me spar with more experienced boxers and by the second month i was already sparring with guys with over a year of experience in mostly equal skills(my footwork was waaaaay better than theirs, but their punching was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than mine...) also, being used to fight in both stancesmade me faster to retreat or chase, since i could step foward with the rear leg or stepnbackward with the lead leg... The first few sparring sesdions the coach told me to "not cross the legs" until he understood that i wasnt mindlesly doing it, i was doing it from experience ñ_ñ

    • @Follow the howl if it wasnt because he ended up praising my footwork(wich for me was a bit too much... My footwork was average among the soo bahk do fighters... Its just that in boxing this type of footwork is not usually seen among beginers... And i had just started atbthe time... But some people in the gym, would call me with thr name of fighters known for their footwork as a joke... Like, calling me ali or willie pep... Because my footwork was on point, but my hands were not... So... It was a bit of "bullying" in a way xD) in the end, at least one or two boxers asked me to teach them some of my footwork, one of the things i did alot was to bounce back into an almost paralel stance when my oponent was rushing in, so they would over extend, and then i would do a sideways pendulum step, either getting them in paralel stance in front of me or getting their back... Altho i couldnt punch them from there, it was pretty distracting for them to have to turn arround to defend or attack... Pretty useful ñ_ñ

  • I watched that Bruce Lee would use that cross step or step with the wrong leg when circling. Worked for him. Modern Martial Artist has a video that Sugar Ray Leonard would use Bruce Lee’s cross step when fighting.

  • The first example isn't really crossing your feet in regards to where your opponent is standing.

  • So basically these are guidelines. You don't have to follow them hard and fast, but you should remember why we have them in the first place.

    @imnotherenow200@imnotherenow2005 жыл бұрын
    • No, you totally should follow them. Top boxers break these rules because they have experience and skill and if you watch closely the more they break the rules the less they respect the opponent.What I mean is that if a your in a ring and your opponent is breaking the rules constantly it can mean two things. He's so confident in his boxing that he find no need to stick to the basics because he believes that he will defeat you easily. The second reason is a lack of discipline or training.Its fine to mix it up and break them once in a while to catch your opponent when he least expects it but most of the time follow them.

  • Thank you Shane! I’d say the most common myth is the “rotate you hips when throwing a lead hook” not only is it incorrect but, it’s doesn’t add power non-accuracy and it actually slows u down plus it actually prevents u from throwing a combo since it’s slow and u r rotating ur legs. So I actually do not recommend it at all. If anything I actually hate it and i dnt know where it started from
