The greatest moment in this game was when my brother and I were talking mid point in the game. "I think we're the bad guys." that was so mind boggling for a game.
I mean we are but we also aren't really the bad guy Dormin didn't really come off as evil and he kept his promise and didn't lie. The humans kinda seem more like the bad guys. They didn't like him so just cut him up. But he probably wasn't evil especially because in the ending Wander as a baby combined with Dormin was kinda similar to Jesus in a way
I never noticed the sky gradually getting darker with each collosus killed when I played the original until I saw this and it reminded me of my journey through that incredible game.
Also, if you notice real closely, Wander's face and neck start rotting from the corruption he takes in.
@@trygveplaustrum4634 His hair also gets darker with each colossi killed. It starts a bright red and turns jet black.
Also every pillar of light piercing the sky is a location of a fallen colossi
he also starts to gain small horns
I've watched full playthroughs long, very long time ago. Never tried it myself but this game has a special place in my heart. Those mechanics, story and graphics were truly something insane back then. Hopefully I'll get enough time to try it out one day
just do it you wont regret it
Please just do whatever you gotta to play this game, even if it's on an old crusty PS2, this game is an absolute gem, a truly timeless masterpiece in my opinion.
@@bearrett50kal17don’t call my ps2 old and crusty, she’s beautiful. 😂
Play it , this is one of my favourites from my childhood
Since the main course of the game is a boss rush type of experience, you can easily get away with killing one boss and close the game for the day. You're either exploring or tracking/killing the colossi. Most bosses can be killed in less than a sitting. Actually getting to them can be a challenge since it's easy to get lost even with the Sword's help but that's where the exploration comes in, and there are shrines dotted about to save the game.
I love how each colossus has its own quirks and personality, and even the poems that dormin creates are little hints on how to defeat them. My favorite colossus that demonstrates both of those characteristics is Cenobia. Dormin tells you "Thy next foe is...A guardian set loose...A closed-off city beyond the channel...It lusts for destruction". You then have to use Cenobia's anger to destroy pillars in the city to progress until Cenobia's own wrath causes it to hurt itself. Beautiful storytelling and amazing puzzle building.
I like to count this as an educational stream. Up until I watched Kev play this I did not know there was a plural for colossus.
all colossi have also names
Colossuses.
Colussy
@@HansPeter-qy3wl That sounds like a word to describe someone who really likes 'colossus' like games. Oh him, he's a total Colussy. Also has the added boner of sounding like pussy. Oh that's a proper dad joke and I don't even have any 'hide y0 kids hide y0 wife'.
colossium
This is my favorite game of all time. Its not a game, its pure art. the story is in your head and its like a sad poem. every time i hear the soundtrack im like in trance and my mind drifts into this world and sometimes i cry because i always listen to it when im sad. I prefer the ps2 version though. Because there is more fog and less draw distance, wich makes the game more explorable. for example i was stunned how long the bridge was and that at the end is an entire castle at boss 15. on ps4 you can see the end of the bridge from far away. Imagine like silent hill with no fog. ps on ps2 the game over screens are even more terrifieng. boss 11 with those big eyes starring in my soul are burned into my nightmares
I felt nostalgic playing this even though I'd never played it before
Snake beater lol
@@Kevduit same with me with crash bandicoot and resident evil 2
@@Kevduit Imagine playing it as a 14 year old kid and just in awe of everything. The first of it's kind to do ANYTHING like this. No story, no explanation what the fruits or the lizards do.....It was just magic. Seeing it again makes me overjoyed because now and from what I see a lot of new people young and old can hold a piece of my genuine core memory where I knew I truly loved games as both entertainment and as a part of my life.
Couldn't have said it better! The music alone has so much presence and emotion sewn into it that somehow also perfectly captures the insane action of the game. And those game over screens kept me up as a kid
2:50 I'm just imagining Dormin laughing as Wander stuffs a whole bag of sour Warheads into his mouth. "HA! Okay, okay, your waifu can heal now."
I was only 6 years old when this game released. Too young to comprehend its artistic value. My uncle used to play and I’d watch him in awe. But everything was “scary” back then so I don’t remember actually picking it up to play. Still good times. Nostalgia fr..
the drop down assassination at the end DOES work. provided you actually land on the boss and not break your legs on the ground
This is not just a videogame... this is one of the best exaples that shows videogames as a true artform in its own right. High Art!
If you can, please continue this game! Fantastic game for its time and the remaster absolutely makes the visuals gorgeous
"The colossi, the plural of Colussuses." Is such an underrated line 😭
For me who was used to competitive fps and fighting games, this game was a change much needed, lol love this game
The most wild part of the game, and the story at large, is that the demon didn't lie or cheat, it only took full control after wander died. He didn't even see his girl get up, and she was still brought back after being resealed.
Played this with a buddy back when it came out on PS2. First game with no loading screens we'd ever seen. Also first time we'd ever caught a ride on a bird. Such a mind-blowing game overall. Great memories of a better time.
I played the remaster not too long back and this game was so imaginative and executed with such grace, something that a lot of games lack today.
It because it’s so much harder to innovate. In 1995 most games were still pixel games and we were just tapping into the possibility of 3D games. 10 years later we would get games like Shadow of the Colossus, Ultimate Destruction and God of War. Look at games from 2013 and now. The evolution of games stagnated significantly because “what do you do that hasn’t been done?”
@@summerblossom4610 the indie scene constantly innovates. Just look at the massive difference between Factorio, Noita, and Baba is You. Hell, even if you copy an existing idea, if you execute it properly, you can completely blow it out of the water. Just look at Battlebit. The point is that it's fully possible for a spiritual successor to come out today and be just as special. It would be a very, very tall order, but it's possible.
@@summerblossom4610ultimate destruction? You are talking hulk ultimate destruction?
@@ciny9520 yeah
I hope youll do all the 16 bosses. This is one of my favorite games and its always a pleasure to see someone playing it for the first time and reacting
Will there ever be a game quite like this? Then again, should there be?
Pathless is likely the closest thing we get to this. Although it does have huge differences, but it captures that feeling of being a wild world, full of abandoned ruins from an ancient civilization. Amazing visuals, soundtrack and gameplay. I highly recommend! ;D
If it's good then yes why not gaming has advanced about since this release
The Last Guardian and Rime?
@@SimpleArt93 I forgot that game existed. I thought it looked interesting and then just forgot about it. Hearing it's possibly the closest thing we'll get to another SoC though got me to put it on my wishlist for the time being.
based on the mechanics, Dragons Dogma. does BOTW has this? as it looks befitting for the game.
Probably my favorite game back on the PS2. Timeless classic.
Fun fact, this game is part of a triogly. This is the first, a game called "Ico" and it ends with "The Last Gaurdien"
The Last Guardian is grim as hell at the end! If ya know ya know! Those Barrels!!! Jeez!
@@WllKiedSnake I know, but Treeko absolutely makes up for it. (Sorry if I spelled it wrong)
@Xventica Yeah! Trico is the best! If your interested in a similar game. Look up Maijin And The Forsaken Kingdom. It's very underrated.
@@WllKiedSnake thank you for the suggestion.
Please do the full game, I'd LOVE to see your reaction to the whole thing! It's an amazing game 🙂
Oh lawd, we're back to 2000s gaming You *know* it's gon' be good
A Shadow of Colossus movie made and shot like this game. It would be incredible. No stupid "Funny" character(s) to ruin it. Just Art. I'll help crowd fund it. I'll start writing the script immediately.
Okay, I'm writing this as an Anime. Little dialogue, trying to make it look like Dark Souls. I'm actually excited to write this lol. I love this game.
@@cuberlandfarms share it when you've written it!
Who’s directing?
@@HoodedSpidey let's have some fun. Quentin Tarantino.
A miniseries with one episode devoted to each colossus, just the quiet cycle of traversing a mostly empty yet majestic landscape, the initial terror of the new colossus, and the struggle to bring it down. No need to expand anything, no telling us who the girl is to him or anything like that. I would pay so much money to see that with good casting and special effects
This looks way beyond it's time, amazing work from the developers
This is the remake.
@@ConnorEllisMusic this sentiment isn't about the graphical upgrades

General rule of thumb in gaming: if it's from the 2000s, then it's amazing!
Throughout the entire game I'm thinking "Why are we killing these peaceful creatures?". Then, at the end, I knew. Because we're the bad guy.
I love how you accidentally found the fastest path for the third colossus. I pogged when you made the jump to its torso.
I haven't played this game in years. But me and my lil brother used to love it. As a kid, I don't think I ever beat the third Colossus. It was rare for me to even beat the first and second. But we still loved this game so much. There really wasn't anything like it.
One of my all time favorite games. There isn't another game like it, and the ending was so good
Favorite part 17:37, Hydrus jumpscare. The cut off was perfect Number 1# game of all time for me, always will be, forever
In my opinion, possibly the very best game made. There was a mystique in this game that other games come close to but never hit me the same way.
This game looks so cool and cinematic! I have never seen a game like this!
Love how everyone I have ever talked to that have played these game says it is heartbreaking to kill the peaceful Colossus, then there is Kevduit: "Let's go baby one monster down and 12 more to go! You're all fucked!"
You do know that the Colossi were never alive so how is it heartbreaking to kill them, they were just a magical vessels that held a fragment of Dormin's soul
@@ghost656metal8 yes because obviously everyone who has ever played the game blind for the first time in their life knows that fact
@@lancearnedo7837 I knew that back when I played the PS2 version, the manual describes them as moving statues, even old developer interviews back in day describe them as magical statues, even some of the announcements for the original PS2 version never describe the Colossi as living beings
I have had this game for every single console that it's come out for. This game is so ridiculously good and just reminds me of childhood. The music, the art, the story is all perfect and I now have a constant reminder on my arm in the form of the sigil on Wanders cloak, as well as the sigil showing the Colossi's weakspots. Thanks for the video Kev
There's too many golden lines here, but the one at 5:40 cracked me up 😂 *"there's so much oil, what are you made of - America?"*
Please make this a series, it’s so cool and I love your commentary
Oh kev when I looked into getting this game to work on pc with emulations I found out there’s a team of people trying to remake a bunch of colossus that never made it into the game, there’s a massive Sandworm, flaming bird, and last I saw a spider that rises out of a lake, the team call it beyond the forbidden lands,
Love your content Kev👍🏽
I NEED a pt2! this game will always have a place in my heart
I never watched the gameplay, but this looks like a game made for today, absolutely amazing and of course your commentary is too good😂👏
This game was such a big part of my growing up. I bought it maybe 2-3 years after it came out and it has set the benchmark for me for games. I feel it was never appreciated as much as it deserved and was overshadowed by the other series that were springing up around it. I always swear by it and have tried to convince many people to play it. I hate that there aren't more games like this, but if there were more games like this then it wouldn't be so special.
Would help if it wasn't locked to PlayStation That's the only thing stopping me from playing g the .latest remaster I don't want to buy a crappy console again and Sony are one of the most anti consumer companies to ever live and truly hate the players they claim to be for
@@noonyabeezniss4911 if ya have a pc try to play even a ROM. The graphics are dated sure but it’s just a great.
@@M1sfiit_ sadly it's not easy to emulate and it's not a perfect experience. It really does deserve a proper pc port.
@@Hawk7886 I would love nothing more than to see SotC be on pc. But it’s been almost 20 years since the release and I don’t see them doing it nowadays unfortunately. But we can always dream
@@M1sfiit_ you're right, especially considering Team Ico's been dead and gone for over a decade. Unless Sony somehow saved the source code and really wanted to pay another team to make the port, it's effectively gone for good. The only "real" way to experience it fully is to find a console and a copy of the disc in good shape. It's almost ironic: The game about killing off what's special in the world for short-term gain itself became a part of history, enjoyed by many for its beauty. If Sony weren't so goddamn greedy, they could've ported it 10+ years ago. Now it's too late.
One of the best games of all time, easily. The OST is probably the best ever.
Best OST ever? Well let's see...the CD soundtrack has remained in print for 18 years & counting. I don't think any other game soundtrack ever has stayed in print that long. Obviously there has been a continued demand for this soundtrack as more people discover the game & it's music. In an age where everything is streamed & available free for the most part, the fact this soundtrack can still sell in physical form all these years really says something. Conclusion...YES!
I'd throw Okami in the ring as well. @@timmadone8930
I knew exactly how it was gonna end when you mentioned the air assassination, didn't stop me from laughing though. Great video Kev keep up the amazing work 👏💯
Looking forward to the rest of the playthrough!
Love this video! So happy you played one of my favorite (and possibly one of the best) games I've ever played. Can you continue with team Ico games and play "The Last Guardian"? my favorite game.
I remember playing this on the PS3 remaster and it was great. It also came with ICO which is an underrated game itself.
this is so nostalgic, the game i played more than any other in the ps2 even though i stopped in the 14º colossus because i didn't know how to kill it and didn't had internet to search how,i still remember that i spent more time exploring and killing the lizards to gain stamina to reach the Secret Garden than in the actual colossus battles I only saw the end of the game 5 or 6 years after I had already stopped playing the only game i remember playing as much as shadow of the colossus was Burnout 3: Takedown

Kev!! You need to keep playing it. Our tale can't end like this
One of the best games ever made.
As he pointed the way with the sword - I waited 15min for the punch line 'I HAVE THE POWER' 😂 from He-Man
Greatest speedrun of all time. You managed to complete the game sub-20 minutes. 10/10
A “colossal” Classic man! What’s crazy is that sonic frontier imitates this game style(well sort of). However it makes the bosses 10x more crazy with supersonic lol 😂. Hey Kevduit you should try it out!!
Honestly impressed that you almost got the hidden trophy for fight 3 for not breaking his armour in that fight.
To this day still one of my top ten favorite videogames of all time. Sends chills down my spine playing. One of only two videogames to ever make me cry.
What was the other one
This game didn't make me cry but...that one thing that happens during the 2nd half of the ending cut scene (I won't spoil it) did make my eyes get watery. The only game so far to actually make me cry was "The Last Guardian" (although the final scene with Luis in the RE4 remake did get to me). Fumito Ueda has a way of making you feel very attached to a character without bashing you over the head with some heavy-handed complex story. Let's hope that continues with his 4th game.
One of, if not my favorite game! The satisfaction in getting a full hit and finishing the fight, followed directly by the guilt of the gorgeous music?! Making you realize you just killed this BIG beast for what? To progress? Just a beautiful game that I absolutely adore.
Ur videos r amazing keep the amazing work up
this vid has made me want to try this game again... love it
Congrats on 1 million subs!
I remember about 5 years ago buying this game from a used game store for the original PS2. This video makes me nostalgic wishing I could play this when it was fresh.
I love this game so much! It's so beautifully made and the story telling is magnificent. You can really tell that this game was not made just to try and rake in money like a lot of titles we see nowadays, this was pure passion. The only thing I don't like with the game is that I find it really sad. The collosi are all just living their lives doing their own things and won't even attack unless provoced; and we just get tricked and slaughter them all, killing every single one of the fantastical creatures.
That was the whole point behind the story. Wander sacrifices himself and an entire world of ancient creatures to save one person. Was it all worth it? He thought so. There is no happy ending, and you aren't really a hero. He also wasn't tricked: He realized after he killed the first colossus that completing his mission would kill him. This is shown by the extreme amount of pain he's in after each defeat. He still goes through with it by choice.
After 18 years this game is still analyzed, discussed, scrutinized, studied, played. That really says something. After all this time you would think there isn't anything left that hasn't been found or seen or tried. Amazingly though new discoveries are still being made. By the way the colossus on the loading screen & game case is the 3rd colossus, not the 1st. But yeah this game was ahead of it's time. There isn't another like it...except "Praey For The Gods" which is a nice spiritual successor in need of more love & a physical release.
All time favorite game. I wouldn't be the same without my playthroughs and recollections of the concept, world, and soundtrack especially.
This is like, the only game ive ever fully obsessed over. I couldnt tell you what I got for my last birthday but if someone asked me ANYTHING about this game I would definitely have an answer

“There’s so much oil. What are you made of, America?” “Omg that didn’t kill me did it? *dead* “😂💀
Fun fact. This game originally came out on the PS2 AND it was originally going to have 48 bosses then it was shrunk down to like 20 something. 8 of them got cancelled but quite a few still have their models leftover in the E3 demo which we can’t access their arenas in. They even left the arenas in without the colossi. They forgot to remove their arenas. To fully beat this game you must beat it like 5 times.

I first played the PS2 version of this game in about 2011 when I was in high school and one of my upperclassman friends recommended it when we were talking about video games, and my mind was blown. Never played anything quite like it before or since, unfortunately the final boss glitched out and stopped attacking me making the final fight anticlimactic, I think it's time I revisit this game with the remastered version.
