  • When I fist saw the photos of the unused collosi, they creeped me out. The low resolution, the fact that we can not see them in game, made them seem so… mystical, so … surreal. The screenshots looked like cryptid photos, adding to the eerie feeling. Remenants of their arenas are scattered through the lands making them seem like extinct creatures makes researching them so interesting, its a feeling that I can not explain.

  • The rock at 17:20 is the same one seen in D3 in the final game as this is where hillock was located before being scrapped and the 9th colossus was moved there. The other images are authentic, the source of these images is team stage 0 who got in contact with a dev, i know this because i am a member of the group. Same with the beta map and badlands image. The "pillars" seen in the spider screenshots are spider legs, not from the spider boss but the remains of other giant spiders, the devs wanted it's arena to be a spider graveyard type area

    @KrateKarrot@KrateKarrot Жыл бұрын
    • That would've been interesting, maybe the dead spiders were prototypes of sorts to the colossus that couldn't contain Dormin's power. Or maybe the Colossi were more animalistic then we realized.

      @thevenomspino@thevenomspino Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you for giving us a little more information of the image. Also yeah, having a graveyard wouldn't make sense because that would heavily imply that the colossi were more alive and animalistic than a rock/mud/not living organism. Something which ueda wanted to leave vague, up to the players imagination.

  • I figured I'd correct and add some things after watching this video. 1. The spider screenshots are legit, no question about it - the rock you pointed out in its arena is still in d3 just with the tallest part removed. 2. A pretty rare fact is the sheets show phoenix had 2 intro cutscenes, presumably because crater had 2 entrances that Wander could come from. 3. Snake II (and snake a and b) is just an early phalanx design, dirge is called narga in the files not snake. 4. Likewise knight_II is just an iteration of Gaius 5. Long neck was probably Roc given that Ueda mentions it having a long neck 6. Griffin B is a griffin model that we haven't seen as the screenshots we have are almost certainly that of Griffin A (again its just an iteration, yamori is unique in that its 2 different colossi) 7. This one is pretty rare for people to know so I don't blame you, but there was a time Griffin was placed on the map and interestingly as a result that specific time frame had 25 colossi.

    @ASapphicKitsune@ASapphicKitsune Жыл бұрын

  • 20:49 The one with the long neck on the crater is the earlier Phoneix. The one during the alpha stages of the game. Blue vest, brown hair Wander. The final design, they made his neck different and lava wings and right eye. But was then removed late in development. Probably sometime in 2004.

It's interesting to dive deep into where this colossi could have been, how they were defeated and why they were cut. It's so sad they were cut because their designs are so interesting (for me the one that sucks the most is Phoenix. The idea of plunging it into a lake to take away the fire and reveal his weak points just sounds amazing. I can only imagine what my kid self would have felt holding the trigger button while the Phoenix falls into a lake with Wunder grabbing onto his back). • I have a theory on the saru fight and how it would’ve worked. You know how you can grab hold of flying birds? It would’ve played a bigger part, mostly for this fight. Saru would be up too high and out of reach by normal means. The player would avoid the rocks being throw until a bird swoops down. Thats when you jump up and grab it, As it flies you up toward the colossi. Once you get close enough, you drop off he bird, and then grab onto saru’s climbable ridges. He’d swing, bob, shake, and shimmy in an attempt to get the player off. You goal wouldn’t be to hurt the colossi yourself, but to just make it let go of the canopy or stalagmites above (depending on the setting of the fight) Damage occurs when the ape finally lets go, and plummets to the earth. “But nick, the players wont have enough stamina to hold onto the bird long enough to make it to saru, and then still climb on it” THATS WHERE YOU ARE WRONG. theres a reason the lizard tails are in the game… It’d be a bit more of a puzzle than a fight, as well as a 3rd act marker. Dont have enough stamina to finish it? That’d let you know you’ve got some grinding/lizard hunting to do, as well as to let you know you wont be finishing the game with your current stamina stats. But of course, All of this was reduce waaaaay down in scope. And, as well, this is, of course just a theory.

    • Nah, I think the final game is paced really well and benefits from being a tight, polished experience. It’s a good length as it is IMO. Longer doesn’t equal better. However, this did spawn two interesting concepts I haven't seen in the game or in the extras: 1. a colossus that breaks apart into a group of mini-colossi, and you have to attack the correct one while the others are trying to kill you. Perhaps you could even use the other's attacks against eachother to give yourself a break. 2. a colossus that has a ranged attack you have to absorb with your sword and/or bow in order to successfully harm it.

I don’t care much for the remake but I’m glad Bluepoint respected the game’s artistic integrity enough not to milk it by creating DLC. Nobody would be upset if they never learned of these unused Colossi because the game feels totally complete and refined as it is, but when you learn of what could have been, it makes you wonder. But they were cut for a reason. It’s part of any creative process, the whittling down of extraneous ideas until you get to the core of what you’re trying to create.

  • If I had to pick one colossus to re-introduce into the game, I think it'd be Phoenix. The environment and visuals alone set it apart! Also, for the worm, it said its weakness would have been the flower bulb. What if the bulb/mouth structure is where its eyes were? Wander could draw its attention by clanging his sword against rocks, pillars, or other hard objects (lots of interesting vibrations) and leap into the bulb and strike the eye to stun it before it tunnels away! We could use that to sort of reverse the typical formula in a sense- by having Wander crawl *inside* the worm via the fur on the *inside*. If your grip ran out (I'm sure we could find some way to allow points to restore stamina), Wander could tumble out of the hollow worm as it spits him out.

Hydrus gave me the creeps, I hated having to jump into the open body of water to trigger the boss battle, as is the case with a few of the colossi. I have arachnophobia as well so who knows how I would have dealt with Spider.

Gonna try and find it this weekend and "check" to see how many statues in the temple that crumbled.... But, if there is some soft of stat sheet at the end of the game maybe that could verify the number I took down....? I'm not sure I even solved the game yet... there may be 1 or 2 left and If I recall, I got stuck on one of them and that's where I left off. I think I had 3 .. or maybe just 2 left... But Roc and Griffin look very very familiar !

    @Luke.Skywodka@Luke.Skywodka Жыл бұрын
    • The game is already great though? Like, it’s a masterpiece, and if we never learned about this cut content I doubt so many people would be making the claim that it’s “incomplete”. Because it’s not. These cut colossi are super interesting and it’s fun to think about what the game would be like if they were in it, but they were cut for a reason as he said at the end of the video. Ueda is a perfectionist and a minimalist. He uses a “design by subtraction” approach which distinguishes him as a director in an industry where the thought process is “more is better”. It’s why he’s such a great creator. He’s focused on elegance and including only what he deems to be absolutely necessary to convey his vision. Anything that isn’t necessary isn’t worth including. SoTC was considered a work of art long before anybody became fixated on this cut content. Trimming fat is a key part of any creative endeavor, choosing which ideas are most valuable. The game is not somehow “incomplete” because it has a lot of cut content, it just means the team had a lot of ideas and the freedom to experiment.

    • Part of me would have loved to see a sequel, but another part of me values Ueda’s desire to always do something new. It would suck for a special game like this to be milked dry with sequel after sequel made in the name of pure profit. Team Ico were distinguished because they created games from the perspective of pursuing artistic expression, so they were satisfied with what they achieved on SoTC and made something different with The Last Guardian. I think the fact that this industry is (or was I guess) able to have a developer and director with that mindset - and given complete creative control and sizable resources no less - is incredibly special.
