Shadow of the Colossus FAN REMAKE - Beyond the Forbidden Lands (THE BETA COLOSSI LIVE!)

Kept you waiting huh? Even though I'm not a part of the Beyond the Forbidden Lands project, an old video of mine seemed to make a great number of people aware of it. So, they kept commenting on that video asking if the project was still being worked on. I didn't have anything to say on that matter... until now...

  • 15:33 This would be an excellent opportunity to build a map for Monkey that is inspired by the areas seen in The Last Guardian. In that game, most areas are in highly elevated open spaces, which would be ideal for Monkey who's beta images indicate he would be hanging from a high place suitable for his size.

    • Monkey was supposed to be hanging from stalactites which can be seen in Basaran's cave, I think the cave just needs a new light source but the arena is pretty much ready.

  • I’m the former dev who made the texture guide at 13:07. I’d like to explain what’s going on in that image better as it’s something that is actually really cool. I made a few for every colossi for all of their screenshots. Technically speaking none of those textures were actually used by Phoenix. So what team ico would do is make a few textures, a “base texture” and then edit it further more to make more variations. A good example is the scales on #7 hydrus, are also reused on devil’s wings and roc’s frills. So what that image is saying “here’s a match to what we still have in the files. Use what we have and edit into a match on the screenshot.” This kind of texture method isn’t really used in most games so this actually gives people looking to remake cut sotc content a much easier time in ensuring high accuracy levels.

    • Amazing, it reminds me of the old 8bit tile based backgrounds were they saved the environment as a set of tiles and build all visuals from that. I can also imagine it's also a good idea if you want to be economic with memory by UV mapping multiple creatures to share a common image map. Load the base "tile" for the common details and another for unique textures.

      @Virtualblueart@Virtualblueart5 ай бұрын
    • @@VirtualblueartThat isn't quite what sotc does, regarding sharing a common UV map. Actually the way sotc does it's textures is pretty bad for performance. This is because in most games they tend to use 1-3 textures per character and just mirror it. That is what's usually called a "Texture atlas". With sotc, characters are actually pulling from a lot of different textures all at once. For example, every colossus has 3 different textures for just the fur. And there's 3 for the eyes. One for the ring, one for the colour part and one for the pupil. Team Ico did this to get as much detail out of the large bosses as possible. That's cause they had an upper texture limit of at max 512x512. But they tried to keep it down at 128x128 which was the standard for game's texture atlases as a whole at the time. So instead of trying to fit all the details into one tiny file, which would result in a very low-res looking boss, they just used the whole space for one specific detail. They also don't share UV maps because every boss is unique. Even the ones that are of very similar design have a ton of small differences everywhere. Hence why the old ps2 version ran poorly. That doesn't quite explain why there's a few duplicates in the game (as in the exact same texture, even colour wise) but that's a mystery for another time. You typically want to run as few textures and materials as possible to that less has to be loaded in all at once. TLDR: Their method is good for getting more detail out of a limited file size, and for making a ton of textures rather quickly with high quality, but it's pretty bad for performance.

  • Probably a good call in designing Worm to be stationary. One thing I noticed in it's model and design is that it bares some resemblance to a bobbit worm specifically. An aquatic ambush predator that burrows into the sand until only it's mouth pokes out in the water, and waits with mandible jaws wide open.

    @claylilac3023@claylilac3023 Жыл бұрын
    • I can see it like that. I can imagine it's challenge would chiefly be getting even near enough to climb it while it tried to snap down it's mouth to smash/grab you. Maybe you were supposed to lure it to hit an indestructible object to stun it, like Gaius with his sword. But this time while riding. Lots of cool options really. Just imagine it being retracted like that worm when you approach looking like just another common ruin. And then the shaking starts and it concertinas up and up before sniffing the air and diving it's maw at you from above. Chilling.

I'm glad that they're creating this project around the engine of the original PS2 version, obviously because working with the hyperrealistic graphics of the remaster would require 5 times the amount of time and resources, but if it succeeds then it can bring new life to an old game, so I still appreciate it.

  • 5:40 that's badass. I can only imagine the amount and intensity of work it took for Slug, as an animator, to get this down, just this. 15:27 I don't think this is disappointing at all. The dam is awesome because it's a dam in The Forbidden Lands that we don't get to see in the normal game, and it was supposed to be part of the mysterious world, and you would have been able to get into it and see what it's like to be there. That's awesome enough. I'm not disappointed, I'm happy there's an answer to why it's in the game at all, that's a real miracle.

That is why I didn't think the team could pull it off, the colossi would end up not being for or not working for one reason or another. I remember as a kid watching Nomad Colossus doing a deepdive into the beta Colossi, but to see them being brought to life and (possibly) having an actual battle with these not-so lost Colossi. This game is a year older than me but even then I only got to play it when I was like 6 or 7, and had no idea what to do lol- This feels like a kind of closure that I didn’t know I needed. ••• To the BTFL Team, should you read this: You are doing so much for this game and this game’s community. @boyslayz6526@boyslayz6526 Жыл бұрын
    • The 48 colossi idea was canned so early on that I doubt we'd either get any kind of playable version of that. I could be wrong but I think 48 was just conceptual and they didn't get that far in before scaling back drastically.

      @franjaff6919@franjaff6919 Жыл бұрын
    • @@franjaff6919 Indeed. My understanding is that the number 48 was initially pitched just as an arbitrary number, not a "serious target", ie Ueda said something to his team along the lines of, "So there'll be a bunch of huge bosses, like 48 of them, and then you go out and climb on them..." That is to say, that number was just an arbitrary number that got pared down to 24 as soon as actual nuts-and-bolts work started and more reasonable targets were set. Chances are many of those colossi were never worked on at all and have literally no information about them. I recently read on TV Tropes, albeit without any evidence to support this, that last year there was some more data mining that suggested another 10 cut colossi had at least some amount of work put into them, but the evidence for them is (supposedly) so sparse that they too would have to be created from scratch. Several of them have literally no information about them except a single line that references their name, and some others seem to be earlier versions or variants of other existing colossi - that is, arguably not even cut colossi but rather just beta versions that had their name changed but some data referring to their original name left in. Again, you'll need someone other than me to confirm this, as my source is not the most trustworthy and I haven't dug especially deep to find out for myself.

If I saw videos like this almost a decade ago when I was deep into SotC, reading about the pre-release material and speculating about the lore, I would've had a heart attack. • Game companies should re-release their older IPs for newer consoles and PC with cut content added in. I want the "uncut" versions of basically my entire collection, lol.

  • Great! There are some fan games that are really amazing, and this fan project is definitely one of the best I’ve seen. I love the concept artwork and the colossus model/animation. Can’t wait to see more. Thanks a lot for this video. I love Team Ico and SotC. Saludos.

  • I'm a little late to comment on this video but it's great to see this project is still a thing. I've mentioned it many times when leaving comments on various videos related to S.O.T.C. without even knowing for sure if it was still a work in progress. Now I know & it's so exciting. If I had any expertise in making a video game I'd certainly welcome the opportunity to jump on board & help out, but sadly I don't. For now I'll just give a special thanks to all who are working hard to make this game a reality. Keep it up & best of luck!!!

  • I am so glad to know (even if I’m a year late) that this project is doing good, so excited to see the 10 cut colossi in all their glory when the project is finally finished, I’m also glad they decided to make evis unique from malus.

  • I tried to chat with the team on twitter but nothing. I wanted to suggest them to hide one of the colossi in the higher part of the temple, being able to climb the way through the secret garden to reach it. Another idea would be to being able to reach mono at the end of the game as dormin wander when his is being abducted by the fountain, adding a cinematic as an easter egg or something.

  • I hope we are one day blessed with a build of the game that has at least 1 unused colossi in at least a somewhat playable state, simply in order to just compare to how close BTFL was in their recreation. Shout-out to the Griffin arena, making it look like an ancient derby of some kind is so incredibly clever.

  • I hope they make an effort to work some of these in behind esoteric exploration puzzles The mystery of the world and the feeling that more had to be hidden somewhere was such a massive part of this game's enduring myth in the public consciousness that it'd be a damn shame if they were all just thrown into the standard linear progression

  • You know, Shadow of The Colossus is a work of art. I don’t mean that in just it’s a work that is absolutely masterful and artful- though it is that. I mean it’s one of the most classical types of art in its relationship with its fans. People became so invested and so obsessed with it that they tried looking for the “last great secret” and became the Secret Seekers, pulling literary analysis to find meaning until they were able to find absolute truth by Nomad Colossus that there wasn’t a great secret- but there were models and places that haven’t been explored by anyone. Then there’s this. This feels like another form of Art Restoration- based solely on sparse images of possible creatures. Animators are doing what we do when confronted with bones of ancient extinct animals, asking the simple question “how did they move? How did they behave?” This game and it’s relationship with its audience is something I haven’t really ever seen, even in a game like Dark Souls. Because it’s a landscape, has its own mysteries AND is its own piece of art, it makes everyone into scavengers, geographers, treasure hunters, literary questioners, conquerors, art restorers, and in some ways, Paleontologists and Archaeologists. Trying to not only uncover old colossus that never made it to the final cut but are actively trying to recreate them… I don’t know, it’s really freaking cool. It’s really fantastic. Thank you for everything.

  • Very cool. I played SotC for the first time on PS4 & I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I honestly am excited for this as I’ve found myself recently having gone down the KZhead rabbit hole with the game & wishing that I had more to play. Great video. Great project. Exciting times!

  • This truly made me cry... For so many years we've mostly had still images and static low res blurry screenshots of these Colossi and we've always had to use our imaginations to imagine what they would move like... but now finally being able to see them actually moving and animating is incredible... it's literally a dream come true to finally see them looking so alive and real after so long... those animations are so well done... even if (hypothetically) this game never actually gets finished or released, just seeing these animations is enough to be an amazing historical accomplishment and dreams come true... Thank you so much fans and creators for this amazing gift...
