  • Previous owner of my Miata installed a similar intake. I absolutely hate it though because it prevents the hood from coming all the way down on that side of the car. I don't know why most people don't duct the intake into the Miata's "mouth" instead of keeping it in the warm engine bay.

    @Karuiko@Karuiko Жыл бұрын
    • Probably just added complexity not being worth it in the end. I can see how also a longer intake piping can mess with airflow and throttle response. Idk anything about Miatas but id imagine there are smaller sized cone filters available so you’d be able to close the hood properly?

    • @@poopsie117 there isn't an easy way to do it because of the shape of the radiator and front bracing/crash structure. • there's a company making actual cold air intakes for the NA miatas now (I think it's napp performance) but the problem is they're more expensive than the Racing Beat one is (like $400 vs like $330) and it doesn't even come with a filter, only the pipes. IDK how much power they're making compared to other intakes, but honestly I'll save the extra $70+filter cost to just get a kit that is complete and hang on to the extra money in the turbo kit fund :)

  • I love the zoom-in on knocking the box over at 4:46 and the "shooting" the bolt off. As for intakes, it really depends on the vehicle and the kit, and there's plenty of room for aftermarket stuff to do more harm than good. My car is a 96 Camaro with a 3800 V6, and according to some online forums, the earlier year intakes like mine have somewhat restrictive air boxes, but the newer ones (I think 98+) are better. So I took all that out and put a double-coned air filter right onto the intake manifold, no tubing or adapters or anything. I'm not getting any of the air box resonance stuff, but I get some performance with weight reduction, if nothing else.

      @roflcoppter117@roflcoppter1174 жыл бұрын
    • @@SavouryLobster Yup, that's the issue, people get the intake separately without a tune. With Subaru's you really just need to do your exhaust, intake, everything you want done on the same day, then pay for a single tune, otherwise there's potentially issues with them leaning out (I know the older 2.5's are lean enough with the crappy stock tune as it is); I don't miss the cost of owning a wrx, but it was a fun vehicle, just a money pit to do everything correctly, so much so, you're better off just buying the car you really want. I ended up going 370z, yeap, N/A boring, but it handles like a dream with just an upgraded front swaybar, and is only slightly slower than the wrx > 110mph ( I had a blouch 20g on the wrx). Don't miss the expensive clutch upgrades, tmic heat soak issues, crappy brakes, never ending coilover/alignment adjustments on the wrx (it's just never going to handle like you want it to, short of if you spend the extra $$ on the sti and get the better transmission and locking center diff). Overall it was some give/take, but I now have much better control over costs with the NIssan, even though Nissan is likely to go out of business right now they way it's being ran into the ground!! I think if the FRS/BRZ goes Turbo, that'll be one fun power to weight ratio setup from the factory along with obviously much better handling than both the Z and the wrx, so that's on the radar for the next fun to drive daily, but it'll just be intake/exhaust/stage II tune and that's that.

It's true that more porous filters provide a small boost in performance, however, they also allow a corresponding increase in particles getting into the engine. Haven't noticed any issue with hot intake air because the stock intake draws in air from under the hood too (actually right above the radiator). Shouldn't have any issue. Not into cold air intakes due to the whole hydrolocking/destroying engine potential. Short Ram is the way to go IMHO. Less risky and you still get a loud intake.

    • what impact does it have on the longevity of the car and motor?

      @NineDiamont@NineDiamont Жыл бұрын
    • @@NineDiamont Not sure if enough owners keep their car long enough after the CAI, AND to have gathered that data centrally somewhere, for folks to document the difference. That said, just run a thought-experiment (like Einstein often does): Increased dust particles coating the backside of all your intake valves --> which will 'rub' into the valve stem seal when the intake valves close, abasing against the intake valve stem seals... Increased dust particles entering the combustion chamber, some of them coat onto the cylinder walls --> which the piston rings will scrub against in the compression stroke. During the combustion/expansion stroke, oil (on the cylinder wall) getting scrapped down into oil pan, will 'wash' some of that particle into the oil pan, which will reach the oil filter later. --> Depending on particle size, some will get trapped by oil filter, some will make it through the filter and keep circulating in the oil. The [small] ones that keep circulating in the oil, depending on the relationship between their particle size vs the parts-tolerance (that's suppose to allow a very thin layer of oil between moving parts), might or might-not contribute to additional wear. (I am not familiar with that designed-in tolerance, so unable to comment on that particular area.) I'm going to GUESS (and this is really just a guess): For folks that don't plan on keeping the car another 100K miles after the CAI, probably won't notice the longevity difference. But for folks that plan on driving their car well into 300K miles or more, the additional pass-through dirt/particles is probably not good idea. Personally, my thinking is: if a smaller-engine car can take a "stock" airbox designed for a larger-engine car, that's probably the best of both worlds - larger filtration cross section area, less flow-restriction, and still a reliable OEM filtrate. BUT, that won't come with the intake sound. And also, most small engine bays will have problem trying to fit the larger airbox... That's the direction I'm looking into at this point for my car. Already, a changed muffler made the sound better, but it becomes annoying on 6+ hour drives on the interstate - I imagine a CAI will be like that. So I'm looking for better intake air flow, but not a more pronounced sound.

Especially on newer cars, the "stock car with high flow filter" and "car with cold air intake" will have the same results because newer air box designs are very efficient (and cold air intakes just ship with higher flow filters). Drop a K&N filter into your stock air box and get all the benefits of a cold air intake at a fraction of the cost.

  • Mighty car mods did a whole video on this. They had the cars on a dyno before and after the intake mods. They found that the majority of the time you are losing power, maybe staying the same. The only good thing about these intakes is the sound. That "plastic box" that was removed acts as a shield for the hot air inside the engine bay, while the plastic tube that was removed was bringing cold air from areas with cold air flow.

    @jgiraldo__@jgiraldo__3 жыл бұрын
    • It all comes down to the design. A majority of them don't add much power because they're capitalizing on the mere concept, despite the fact that not every engine bay is going to have the space available for the perfect design. Ironically, the Mini Cooper has an aftermarket option that very well designed that adds 8HP

      @chrisjfox8715@chrisjfox8715 Жыл бұрын
    • It all depends on how the intake restricts mass air flow. An OEM design restrictive to flow will do that, but so will a design that takes in the much less dense hot air. The temps under the hood can get pretty toasty travelling at city speeds, at highway speeds the temp is less of an issue. Specifically on a dyno most fan setups are ridiculously inadequate to simulate actual fresh airflow into the front bumper, so intakes prone to taking in hot air will appear worse than they actually are in real world driving conditions.

  • Cool and honest video! I learned alot about wave tuning with my Chrysler long ram intakes with 32" runners. I already knew from experience that the "only for low rpm" common knowledge was wrong in a big way! I have a 727 bellhousing that was split when they flashed past a 6500 rpm rev limiter to 7500+ while running in 2nd gear and was shifted to high! They would consistently lay rubber every 800 rpm or so at over 130 mph in a Chrysler Newport, once accidentally going to 7800rpm. You could drive back and see the multiple marks on the road. The higher the rpm the worse the flash. This was with only headers, a very custom cam, and the rams with hoodscoops on the stock 383 2bbl. The hood scoops made such a difference in intake temp that when I would get to work those long rams would be sweating like a pop can instead of almost too hot to touch. While reading a 1932 encyclopedia that was talking about wave tuning it said the longer the tube becomes the more standing waves are in it and the less critical the cross section area was to flow. I talked to a guy at edelbrock who had driven and dyno tested them who confirmed my findings and said they measured between 5 and 7 psi boost at the valve. I know that they floated my intake valve springs at 2800rpm that ran great up to 6500 with the same carbs on an inline intake. The key was that magic cam tuning and header tube construction. An intake like you show could really step things up at certain rpms. The downside to ram tuning is that it comes in hard at certain points and lays down about as hard at others. The longer the tubes the less distance between points.

  • It used to be the case decades ago where an intake would be a great modification, but these days most car filter boxes are designed better, and replacing with some cheapo intake will just introduce more contaminants into the engine. People blow money on K&N and it's no better than a Nappa/O'Reilly's Special (Spectre brand, etc). If you can't get cooled air into your engine, you aren't doing shit and the only way to guarantee that is to get a sealed box kit (like S&B). Anything else is cosmetic ricer shit that you're paying for brand over performance. Ironically....the sealed box kits almost always have a poly screen on top and look professional AF while also being cosmetically superior at the same time. Shit looks primo mint. It also makes everything sound "meaner", exhaust wise

    • @Jack Myhre You are probably not a car enthusiast and that is ok, as most people aren't. I would agree with you, that we all could get from point A to point B in a CVT Mitsubishi Mirage. 78 hp will do the job screaming in protest, however if that was the only car available, most enthusiasts would be looking for ways to make it stand out, sound better and move out faster. When I was 14 I was looking for ways to mod my Garelli moped. A few years later, I was modding my GSXR1000.

  • Warm air intakes are for sound only. Stock air boxes have lower IATs, and muffle sound more, and are engineered by the car engineers to work with the MAF sensor best. Dyno tuning a car with the hood up leads to better results with them because they are sucking way more air than if hood was down. It is a big business and the manufacturers of them try their hardest to promote them as something special, with or without a tune.

I pulled that long tube out and rerouted a 6 inch tube to the wheel well and even with basic cheap paper filters, it made a pretty big difference in the low end, but not much different in the high end, no real sound change but glad I did it.

  • I read something years ago where they tested a bunch of different brands and styles of filter, the only option that showed any positive increase in airflow and performance was a good quality aftermarket filter in the original airbox. Everyone assumes a pod filter works but if you roll out the filter element of your pad style filter and a standard pod filter you'll usually find the pad filter has more area than a standard pod filter which means less restriction🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

    @brotang2953@brotang2953 Жыл бұрын
    • this is very true. a quality flat filter will provide more surface area for airflow filtration, meaning as it catches particles there is still plenty of space for air to take another route through the element. the main issue is turbulence caused by sharp turns in the box, and the muffled intake sound. most people go aftermarket just for more noise without a full aftermarket exaust.

      @fakiirification@fakiirification9 ай бұрын
  • I replaced the stock snorkel to my airbox which ran over the radiator hose with a straight piece that goes over the radiator directly to the front grill. My ait is now reading 5 degrees over ambient air temperature. Often times just a little mod to your snorkel can make a big improvement. Granted I did some accelerations during the polar vortex in WI with temps at -20 below before wind-chill and it didn't feel like I had a turbo. I don't think cai are worth much aside from sound which can be awesome. Can't say what's needed if you run a turbo and intercooler or need more air than stock!
