Do POD filters make power? And do you need to spend the cash or can you make your own out of PVC pipe? Today we're going to find out!
In this new series, we'll get an expensive intake system, and a home made system, then get an expert to decide. Along the way, one car will modified with loads of cash, and the other one will be modified with parts found from dumpster diving, recyclers, second hand parts or the cheapest parts we can find.

But if you're in California, part of those $400 for the brand can also be applied to having a CARB sticker so when a cop pulls you over you can tell them to go fuck themselves. • The only thing i would've changed with Marty's improvised run is swapped the 90 he's holding at 4:36 for two more 45's and a bit of straight pipe. That way the air doesn't need to make that narrow 90 twice. If you improvise this kind of stuff, it's good to avoid narrow 90's as much as you can, same rules as house ducting, but... in pipping for liquids, you don't need a soft 90, so there's none to buy (not at that size anyways). Also, PVC is perfectly good for the engine bay, by the time it melts, your wires are going to short on account of losing the insulation. One can step up their game and go with fire proof piping, used in modern buildings. That stuff is even higher on the melting point, and decent if you happen to pass near something very hot.

  • I had the option of fitting a pod filter to my Eunos but in the end I just drilled a few 50mm holes in the airbox underneath the filter for added induction noise and left the standard filter in place. Made zero difference to the power but the extra noise made me smile every time I pressed the accelerator. And after I fitted a new exhaust and manifold I couldn't hear it anyway so I'm glad I didn't waste any money on it 😂

The biggest thing your gonna find is those wheels are to big and mess with the gearing for the underpowered engine. Lowering the back is very hard work but so worth it, those torsion bar axels give a lot of lift off oversteer. • A DIY tip for PVC intercooler piping is to fill a long length with fine beach sand cap off each and leave it in the sun on a hot day or help it with a hair drier and then bend it to the shape of your engine bay let it cool then remove all the sand and presto, you have no joins. The sand prevents it from kinking so you'll have even diameter.

    @angryman3317@angryman3317 Жыл бұрын
    • Hard to believe it would work with that diameter. Sure it works for computer cooler hard tubing or greenhouses, but here the pipe wall thickness to kink size ration is not on your side, as the plastic needs to stretch around the kink and there simply is not enough of it.

  • For about $65 I took out all the intake baffling from my Civic and put a small section of exhaust tubing in between the stock airbox and the stock intake snorkel plus added a K&N pad filter. Sounds awesome and definitely breathes better

  • Project Farm made a comparison of drop-in filters including K&N and while they do open up the airflow a lot, they're actually pretty poor in terms of filtration

  • I’ll forever watch mcm, you two don’t need go into the “KZheadr mind” of over the top thumbnails. I met moog many many years ago at an auto barn near dural, he was so bloody nice and I hope I can catch Marty in the wild just like that one day.

  • Air velocity matters greatly in an intake. If you stick a 3 inch intake on a 2 inch TB, all the air is going to get turbulent at the choke point and hurt performance. You'd be better off running a 2 inch tube on a 2 inch TB. So if you slap one of those $20 ebay intakes on your ride, chances are it will be nice and loud but no gains or worse, loss in power. I did this with my 96 Infiniti G20. Went from stock to ebay intake, felt sluggish, put the stock tube back on with the pod filter, and got power. Then I read an article about intake air velocity and flow and decided to make my own intake. Went to Pepboys and got intake tubing the same size as the throttle body, drilled my own holes and it definitely felt the best of all 3 combos. Never tested it on a dyno or anything but there was a noticeable difference between the 3. So now I'm pretty selective when picking out intakes.

  • One of the things I enjoy. The products you are buying with the cash car are budget friendly. Donut media has the Hi-Lo series. But high price cars parts are not in the realm of possibility for most of us. I enjoy that you are still trying to be as consumer friendly as possible.

  • I made my own intake for my BH Subaru wagon (US Outback) out of ABS pipes and rubber joiners. I used the factory 'air horn' that feeds air from just above the radiator, bringing in cold outside air, then made a straight run to the elbow to the factory airbox, eliminating the extra bends and intake mufflers. Sounds better, better throttle response on tip in, and seems to improve torque pulling longer grades. Importantly, though, I did this 12+ years ago. It is still holding up. I also still have the factory ducts, if I got crazy and decided to put it back.

  • For my 1UZ-Nissan D21 swap I used GM intake pipes and box from the junkyard. $108USD for everything including clamps, box, filter, and MAF. GM used the same intake and filter setup for engines rated 270hp-320hp so it should be a good match for a 1UZ with bolt ons. I really like the oem look.

  • I went to an exhaust shop and had them bend exhaust pieces for my turbo ducting. Worked extremely well and cost about $80 for the old air and both pipes from the turbo to the intercooler and intercooler to the intake hat.

  • I'm glad to see most comments agreeing the expensive system is junk. The PVC would be just as good if anything the tube would flow better not being convoluted you could even buy a K&N for Martys for like $100. Moogs filter was tiny. You can get a similar SAAS kit for like $60 with convoluted tube and pod in a box.

  • I did also put a pod filter on the 206(not for HP but for fun) it just fits perfectly on the stock inlet pipe no need for the extra piping and no need to get an adapter for the MAF sensor if you wanted to do it real cheap. Sad I just got rid of my 206 few days before Marty bought his

  • I always leave the stock airbox and just put a K&N drop-in filter that I replace every few years (I don't bother cleaning and re-oiling. Too much risk to the MAF). But the airbox itself is literally one of the last things I would ever touch. This doubles to help when you get pulled over because it looks more stock so cops kind of overlook the smaller details that would give it away.
