    • Do real tests on cameras. Take a film camera a dslr and mirrorless (didferent brands) and take photos. Process and print photo. Which print is the better? Understanding light composition and settings gets the photo not the best camera on the market. Having the best camera doesn't mean you get the best photos. A tack sharp photo with bad composition and light is worthless. A youtuber runs his photo business using 5Dmk2. His clients are happy.

    • @@bngr_bngr Yes and no. The Z mount mirrorless cameras do have certain advantages. The ability to shoot completely silently has been useful for me while shooting animals for example. And eye tracking AF is just amazing as well, the AF performance of the current mirrorless cameras is just way better. Though that isn't *because* they are mirrorless. It's just new technology enabling it. Shooting with my Z50 is just... Fun. A LOT of fun. It's a very capable camera in a small body and it doesn't cost you a kidney to buy it.

    • @@bngr_bngr you obviously do not know the gap between the af system of the Z cameras and the Nikon DSLRs. If some influencer says they have "bad af" what they actually mean is they get outperformed in subject detection and tracking by the current techleaders in that field. It does not mean they have actual bad af, in fact they outperform the DSLRs. For instance the D500 has the "highly famed" 3D tracking, but seriously it is shit compared to the tracking mode of the Z6. Everyone can decide for themselves what they "need" or not.

  • I just got a peak-design slide strap for my Z9 and when you attached one end to the tripod screw on the body, it hangs very comfortably at your side, even with the 100-400 lens attached. It barely moves when you walk and really makes hiking with the Z9 a lot more comfortable.

  • I have a Nikon Z8, Z7II, and a Nikon Z30. I use the Z30 on a gimbal and can carry it all day if I need to. The video on the Z30 is amazing, and it's my go to for most of my video needs. I can't stress how good the video is on the Z30, and it being light is a super important feature to have. Not having a viewfinder is not an issue if you plan on using the camera mostly for video, and having a LCD display that pops out to the side while using it on a gimbal is incredibly important. The video on the Z8 is great, but it provides far more options that are mostly nit needed unless you are doing serious work with extensive color grading. In most cases I can't tell the difference between the Z8 and Z30, when recording in 4k 30p video; and not in terms of dynamic range, but in terms of clarity and picture quality.

    • I absolutely agree, the Z30 is a small little beast with wonderful capabilities! Unfortunately I have purchased it especially for wedding videography because my partner cannot hold anything heavier for a 15 hour wedding day. And then comes the first summer wedding season and the camera just overheats EVERY time. It just simply cannot maintain working temperatures while shooting 4K. We have tried 1080p, but I am having a hard time leaving 4K behind while promoting our video work as premium quality services... So even tho I adore the little z30 we are about to purchase another Z6II to our arsenal and guess my partner just have to train her biceps to keep up with the weight! :D

  • For those considering the apsc options, as a Z50 owner, the zfc models have two features i wish i had. Chelsea and Tony mentioned the flip out screen -It is VERY nice to have for photos taken in the vertical aspect. Second, the zfc models provide real buttons for the functions which on my Z50 have only vague spots on the lcd screen that are hard to find with your fingers and which you sometimes bump when you didn’t mean to. And its easy and inexpensive to add an aftermarket hand grip to the zfc.

Yes, you lose a stop of light, but the image quality is stellar throughout the entire range. I've used it travelling and shot professionally with it, and it's usually glued to one of my cameras. Great walkthrough, guys!

  • Nice overview of the Nikon lineup. Having owned the Z6ii and Z7ii and now owning the Z8 and Z9, the only thing that I would differ on is if I only owned one Nikon Z lens, it would be the Z 24-120 f4 S which is a great hiking, travel and capture the moment lens. I get your preferring the low light capability of the Z 24-70mm f2.8. but for indoor sports I've been able to count on the Z 70-200mm f2.8 and Z 105mm f2.8 Macro (I often shoot with two camera bodies sporting different focal lengths.). I prefer not to use the 24-120mm f4 for indoor sports as it often necessitates pushing the ISO higher than I'd prefer. For outdoors sports the 24-120mm f4 on the Z8 while the Z9 having the 70-200mm f2.8 attached works to cover most of the shots that I encounter. I get that the Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is a great lens, and I'll probably hope to find a slightly used one to add to arsenal one of these days, but for now I've used my spare cash to pre-order the Z180-600mm.

  • They did an excellent overview. There are a couple of key points missing : 1. The high iso quality of the Z6 II is insane. Maybe not as crazy as the d780 but close. If you do a lot of street at night you are going to love it. Street at night is slow the AF will be more than enough, and steer often call for single point composition. The other point is adapted lenses , the Z8 and the z9 will focus with your old Ninkkors often equal or better than the D850, yes they are that good. The other cameras in the list are not even close. They are not as good as native , but you can keep your 70-200 E and buy the Z8 instead of the z6 II

I currently shoot with a D7100 and D7200 and I am heavily considering the Z5 option BUT what has been holding me back is when it comes to lenses. As I am on a tight budget right now, upgrading to mirrorless and outfitting it with Z lenses is out of the picture (no pun intended.) I see where there is an adapter available to mount F Mount lenses. My question is this, can I mount DX lenses to this adapter? I know with mounting a DX lens to an FX body my image would be cropped, but would DX even work using the adapter?

  • One thing that I learned from many years of digital photography is that sensor size is only one factor to consider when buying a new camera, l have cameras from Panasonic, Olympus, Fujifilm, Pentax and Nikon, they range from full frame to APSC and Micro 4/3. If you plan on getting serious about your photography i recommend starting with a mid grade camera and choose your lens carefully. If you are on a budget, look at the used market and buy from a camera store that grades the equipment, i have used B&H PHOTO and ADORAMA for my camera purchase. Many of the cameras that I have were purchased new but near the end of their production or after they had been on the market for a while. You don't need a full frame camera to start in paid photography or just using your camera from photographing events, the last wedding i attended i used a Fujifilm XT5 with a variety of Fujifilm and Viltrox lens and it worked great.

    • The Z8 is a much better choice than the Z7 but it is not only for the AF but for the EVF. The Z7 does not provide a realtime view of the subject once you start shooting, in H+ it will show you a slide show of what you just shot, this is very annoying and will likely make you lose the subject. For sports and wildlife currently only the Z8 and Z9 can be recommended. It is possible to do wildlife with the others as well but it gets a lot more difficult because of the slide show issue.

You get less reach, a worse aperture and pay over 1000€ more. Sigma is no option for me, people are also reporting rather poor AF performance on Canons mirrorless bodies. Canon really needs a competitor to Nikon's and Sony's 600mm zooms.

  • I really wish they’d come out with a Z7III with the AF of the Z8, but leaving out some of the other fluff to make it a little easier on the wallet. Basically, get the price a bit under the R5. This way I can use an FTZ adapter with all my F-mounts while I slowly transition to Z-mount. If I spent the money for the Z8, I wouldn’t have to worry about buying Z-mounts because they’d take my house and reposes my car. I don’t want the Z7II because evidently the AF is abysmal, and it seems these hi-res cameras need to be able to record 8k in order to have good 4k. Neither of those is a good compromise for me, but I don’t want to have to swap out all my lenses at the same time as bending over for a camera, as I would have to do switching to Canon. It’s really a shame that you have to switch systems all the time as one manufacturer becomes uncompetitive and another keeps innovating. Maybe that is only a problem for us sad Nikon shooters.

  • I just bought a z9 and I couldn't be happier. Coming from a d850 I was very scared of going mirrorless because I had only ever tried the z6 and z7 and other Sony cameras and they all felt like toys to me. Also the batteries were abysmal. Now that I have the z9 I literally haven't thought about my d850 at all. It feels so robust, the image quality is insane, the evf is actually good and feels like an ovf plus all the high tech benefits. Its so much faster too. I've only had it for a couple of weeks and I'm already getting shots I couldn't have gotten with my d850. If you're on the fence go for it. Coming from a long time mirrorless skeptic.

I still say I'd probably never had gone digital (at least as early as I did) from film if the D3200 hadn't been a super low cost option "back in the day". I'm not going to gripe about lack of an enthusiast level crop body as I'm fine just dropping my Z8/Z9 into DX for now but a 26MP stacked sensor with IBIS and the internals of the Z8 would entice me for certain scenarios.

A Z90 might imply professional body with integrated grip which I'd have no real use for. I doubt we'll see Nikon go with an R100 type release unless that somehow becomes a runaway hit or was already in development. Fuji proved you could do a stacked APS-C camera at the 26.1 MP. That would be perfect though I really don't mind stepping the Z9 or Z8 to DX to gain IBIS.

Otherwise, you might get frustrated because the pictures look much better on the Smartphone. Plus, most camera screens are still stuck in the 2010s. OMDS or Panasonic could bring out something like this with their M43 lines. Maybe even with integrated "tutorials". You start in fully automatic mode and then bit by bit it will explain to you all the parameters and lets you play around with it. With Nikon, everything just fell under my fingers perfectly the way I like it. The colors are great, and I just find Nikon files easier to work with than Canon. The ONLY reason I switched was the autofocus system. Why should I spend $2500 on a camera with an autofocus system that's best at portrait and landscape when I can get one that does that plus wildlife and sports? A fast autofocus can basically do it all. That leads to choosing Canon.

The sensor of the R8 is not as fast as the sensor of the R3. Therefore it will not suit you for sports photography. This is a dead feature Instead I would recommend the R7 which is a camera with fast and effective FPS using a mechanical shutter. In addition, it has ISIS that improves the sharpness of the images when you shoot at a low shutter speed.
