3 simple steps to easy chipping technique
This chipping technique is so easy with 3 steps that are simple
Step 1 is use the bounce of the club to stop duffing your chip shots around the green.
The other simple tip is to raise your club so the heel is off the ground eve. You set up to a chip shot. Doing this increases the bounce and reduces the likelihood of hitting your chip shots fat.
Step 2 is the relax your arms at set up to help remove tension in your arms so we want to Hang them naturally
A bonus short game tip is not always chip with your sand wedge or lob wedge it increases your consistency and margin for error
Step 3 get the core through
Do not stop your body rotation. Too many bad chips shot are when the body stalls and the arms push or dig down or flip the wrists to cause thin shots.
Simple feel when chipping is to rotate through.
Hope you enjoyed those 3 simple steps for a chipping technique

One of the best tips on chipping, I have seen on KZhead. Thanks
Finally someone has said it! Chipping with an 8 or 9 iron is easier to direct and gauge speed and distance. Nick Faldo is a big advocate for using a high iron to chip and run from the fringe because it works. It's very hard to get distance right when you are dealing with lob height as well. Don't let your pride get in the way of a better result.
Well said indeed!
Yep!
My senior golf mate always uses his 8 iron when chipping from around the green; and his score is amazing. On average he plays 84, even though his GIR is probably only around 20%.
I don't use a wedge. I'll leave it at home. I've been tripping with my eight and nine iron for 30 years
Agreed.
I watched this video before I played last Friday and what a difference to my game. Impressive, thanks bro 🙏🏻
Another excellent video Alex, thank you. Such an important part of the game. I'm constantly practicing this in the garden and it has helped me out on the course. Thanks again for the great content.
Much appreciated and thanks for sharing that. Cheers!
One of the clearest and most helpful golf videos I’ve ever seen! Thank you.
Was always a bad chipper and tried standing closer to the ball. Unreal improvement and this video confirms it and gives me more tips. Great vid!
Glad it helped and reassured you :) keep at it 🏌️♂️⛳️
This really is golf simplified. All your videos are outstanding and simply work in the field. Thanks for all the tips!
Thank you so much for the kind words! It means a lot to hear that the tips are making a difference for you. That's the goal for sure... Better, simplerand more enjoyable golf for years to come.
I'm a beginner. This was my greatest weakness so far, but this video made a remarkable difference. I tried it and got consistent results from 20 yards around the hole- one went in! Thanks!!
My weakness is blisters rn 😢
I took your driver and irons lessons to the range and it was a miracle. Can't wait to try these chipping techniques. 3 years watching several KZhead instructors, you are by far the best!
Well I’m honored! Delighted to hear that those have helped a great deal and I expect the foundation for chipping in this one will benefit you too. Keep at this crazy game 💪🏌️♂️⛳️
Love this video, my short game has gotten so much better since I've let go of all tension. The feel I use to make sure is almost allowing the club to rest on my trail fingers through the swing, almost just cradling the grip. Getting rid of tension is the best feeling in golf.
Thanks for sharing and keep at it 🏌️♂️💪
I love the way Alex explains how and why of a successful chip shot. Great video!
Thank you kindly and hope it’s helping
Excellent video. Just the basics to simplify the chip shot. I'll be coming back to review it often.
Alex thank you!! After 51 years at the game I love and countless lessons you have helped me immensely! The putting and chipping video’s are perfect. I am curious as to you filming location as the surroundings look very much like the NE USA. Great work on these!!! Cheers from Buffalo NY!
That’s so wonderful hear. Thank you for being with us and for sharing. This is Louisville Kentucky. Most are these days :) 👍🏌️♂️
I love all aspects of the game but these types of shots I have a particular fondness for. I play these kinds of shots around my home the most and when I'm consistent with the shots it's a beautiful feeling. Then I get lazy and skull one or shankapotomous one into the next time zone so that snaps me back to reality and brings my focus back in. Those are becoming a rarity tough and I'm very grateful for that. Thanks for the tips, I really need to practice that first one more often.
Smart practice is key 👍⛳️
Great tips. I'm going to try these next season. I definitely followed the firm arms and squeeze the ball method of chipping and I'm very inconsistent on my distance control and chunk chips frequently.
Yeh it’s a common issue but easily remedied. ⛳️💪
Fantastic tips. I’ve been working on improving my game around the green, and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Cheers and let us know how it’s gone ⛳️👍
I've been working on every detail of chipping improvement. Not one video mentioned "too much grip strength in the forearms and shoulders". I appreciate you bringing that point up, because other channels do not address the SIMPLE thing. Thank you
Excellent video for someone like me looking for answers around the green. Thanks
Grande opportunità per un golfista...ho iniziato da poco ma mi hanno aiutato tanto i tuoi video 👍
Hi Alex great video and I often chip with the heel slightly off the ground and I found using a eight iron even easier to to chip with and allowed more room for error for me.
That’s sounds great to me :)
When I first started golfing, one of the courses I played I ended up getting paired up with an older gentleman, it was a nice round and he took a liking to playing with me as our demeanors matched. So after that first time, anytime I was playing there and he saw me he would ask to get paired up with my group. As I was just starting out I had a lot to learn and he asked if I minded him giving me a few tips, I told him I could use all the help I could get. Well, I didn't know it at first but turns out he was a golf instructor and here he was giving me lessons for free while we played. His tips on chipping around the green and getting out of traps around the greens really helped me improve my game rapidly and they still help me today. One of the things he taught me was around the greens it is usually easier to use an 8 or 9 iron, depending on your lye of course. I got away from this for a while but the other year I started getting back to using my 8 iron around the greens and it has helped my short game a lot, I would say I have saved on average at least 5 strokes a round, maybe more, but easily 5.
Great video. I have chipped that way my whole time golfing. It is the most consistent chipping method. Thanks.
Great validation keep at it 👍🏌️♂️⛳️
Really like this video. Can’t wait to practice with these tips in mind
Alex, this video is very eye-opening. Thank you for making this. These would usually cost us amateurs lots of money to get in lessons.
Great lesson, well done 👏
That is the best instructional video I’ve seen! Makes sense and easy to understand! Thx
Why thank you very kindly. Much appreciated and hope it helps you around the greens
This was the best video I've ever seen on chipping. I was also the worlds worst chipper and not enjoying the game. Tip #1 explains why my contact was always suspect. Not using the bounce reduced my margin for error. Too many times I've laid the grass over the ball. Thank you for the help.
Well I’m delighted to hear that and very glad it resonated and cleared something’s up
Agree outstanding video Exactly what I need 😊
I think I have the title for worse chipper
Some great tips here Alex! My go to club around the Greens is my P, Leave the lofted wedges in the bag!
Wow, great stuff. Really articulate and precise and on. Ty Can't wait to go try this out.
Awesome, thank you! Let us know how it goes adding some of this :) 👍⛳️
Well done. Explained the concepts VERY well. Thank you.
You are welcome! 👍⛳️
Thanks for your advice
Great video! Tension definitely is not our friend. Personally I feel comfortable and situationally dependent to use almost any club in my bag for chipping. I’ll use hybrids on tight lies 7 irons- PW for bump and runs, and SW or LW for anything out of the rough or sand. I try to avoid using my most lofted wedges as much as possible around the green. To much risk for the reward.
Sounds like you have your plan and confidence to boot. Keep at it 👍⛳️
Maaaaan. I used my 9 all day and used this technique today. What a difference. Thank you
Well said, excellent tuition
The most helpful golf video I've ever watched , Thank you .
Delighted to hear that and Glad it resonated with you. Have fun applying the tips⛳️🏌️♂️
Excellent tips. Especially the 2nd part. Feeling relaxed through the arms allows your hands to be more relaxed and still move through the ball.
Glad it was helpful! 👍⛳️
Super instruction .. used this today with my 8 iron .. .definitely works and will keep this method thanks
Fantastic and we’ll done! Thank you for coming back to share you’re success. Keep at it! ⛳️👍
Great video, concise and extremely helpful
Think you any hope it’s helped ⛳️
Nice tips. Liked the explanation of using the bounce. Used to chip everything, but now I always way up using the putter instead. This helps make more hole outs.
Good stuff and keep at it ⛳️
I always use my 50 degree, before that i always used my pw, but the bounce on my 50 is much better (from time and tech). I love these tips
Good stuff and glad to hear!
Thanks for the reminder on Step #1. I have been working again on chipping from a stance close to the ball, as you show here. If I stand too far away, I find that I can "duck" into the shot, to compensate, causing a dreaded chili dip!!
Exactly yes. It’s not a mini golf swing… it’s a chip and we try and find the simplest reliable way to do it…. such is golf ⛳️ 😂
Full chipping session today. Started off normal with my duffs and skulls and occasional just okay chip. Stopped, reset, remembered The Steps. Forced myself to get my chest going through the ball to face the target regardless of where the ball went (probably my single biggest issue). Finally got 1 then 2 then 3 in row and after that I could not miss one. This wasn't just a light bulb moment, but a million watt candle power moment/session. The loose arms was a close second b/c I though I was relaxing them but realized was always "straightening" them out. So, after relaxing them I could hit high or low shots at will. As a result, I am actually excited about playing a real round of golf again. After a few more practice sessions of course. 😎
Great tips, will put them to use today.
Excellent to hear and let us know how it goes :)
Great video! Thanks for the MUCH needed help
Glad to hear it!
I like simple. Even I can do simple. I practiced this technique today and it works. Thank you very much.
Exactly the goal and glad you tested it
One of the best I have watched !!!!!
Delighted to hear that thank you!
Great, simple instruction
Great advice it’s helped me immensely. Thank you so much.
You're so welcome!
Thank you! I was struggling with chipping. Cannot wait to get to the range tmrw! Practicing in my house now lol
Happy to help!
Depends on the lie will determine using wedges or 9 or 8 iron. Always great advise on these videos.
Cheers Rocky!
EXCELLENT VIDEOS, ALEX.
Hi Alex, one of the best videos in KZhead. Thank you so much for your input. I have two questions. My problem is not digging in with the leading edge. Somehow this works. It is more I hit it with the leading edge the ball and the ball goes on the ground. What would be in this case to correct? Are you saying in chipping we should use always bounce? Thank you.
Fantastic explanation. Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it
Wow that really works.. Thanks a lot mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Happy to help
As always, beautiful in its simplicity. I so enjoy learning from you. Thanks for putting this up. I'm fairly happy with the way chipping has come along, 10K balls later, but i'm not 100 % on where the ball should come into contact with the club face. And more than that, how do i repeatedly create that wonderfully addictive click of affirmation, the wedge-gasm. Haha, Sorry, but thats what its like as an addict. Cheers!
Thank you! Cheers! Too true. Keep at it and learn and get good at a couple of shot techniques and test it out on variable slopes, lies and distances ⛳️💪
The 9 iron is my favorite club all around. It has always been my most versatile club and I use it pretty much anywhere inside 140, right up to the fringe.
👍⛳️
Great tips man!!! Thanks!!!
Like it...easy to understand and practice
This blew me away. My chipping was terrible. Overshooting, undershooting, running past the hole. I gained much more control over my shots. Thank you.
Nice work and well done. Glad to have nudged you in the right direction
Excellent instructional video, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great video Allex. Thanks a lot.
Glad you liked it!
you speak in a language i understand.....looking forward to trying thses tips and letting my chest come thru the shot the way you described
Glad to hear that. Let us know how it goes around the greens ⛳️
I found a different technique that works well for me. which was opening the face of the club but when you follow through you slightly straighten it back. I noticed a lot of pga players with crazy open faces when they were less than 50ft but to my suprise it works.
It’s a way of getting a little more spin but avoids digging in. Can lead to thins but well done!! 👍⛳️
Thanks so much. I will try it today
How’d it go?
Excellent tips…..simple and consistent !
Glad you like them and I’m confident they will help ⛳️👍
Great video Alex, thank you. I try to apply everything you mentioned, and it definitely helps. I have to get the feel though that I brake or stop the clubhead (to control roll) after contact. Should this be a conscious thought at all ?
Yes that feel can be good!
Great video !
Superb Golf tips. Thanks Sir.
Always welcome
just learning this is helpful!
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy this crazy game
Well done.thanks.
Wow very interesting. This is the most interactive golf video
Glad you enjoyed it and hope it helps! 🏌️♂️⛳️
Great lesson! Nailed it!
Appreciate that and hope it helps
Very nice tips !
Glad you like them!
This worked like a charm!
Super and hope you’ve stuck with it
Easy and simple to how the chipping works 👍🏼
Yes indeed!
Awesome step one WOW thanks so much
My pleasure and thanks!
Great video and instructions you even answered my question, which club do you suggest 9 iron I will start practicing with it as I use my A wedge for close shots, pitching wedge for longer shots
Delighted to hear that! Keep at it
Great & simple tips..Thank you..
Cheers 💪⛳️
Great video Alex,👌🏌️♂️
Thank you and hope it helps! ⛳️
Excellent tips, Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent!
Excellent advice man
Why thank you
That's fantastic did not know about setting up properly on wedges have never used my wedges in fairways because wedge shots always went hard left will definitely open my wedge irons shaft straight up can't thank you enough!!!!!!!!
Glad to be of assistance:) let us know how you get on! 👍⛳️
very nice - ty
Thanks!
I will think about that tomorrow when I play! :)
👍🏌️♂️
Thank you... It all makes sense -
Delighted to hear it
Great chipping video. 😁I like your style. But then again, I am quite the simpleton...
My first pro. defined chipping as putting with a lofted club. I have a fantastic wristy flowing action which works about one percent of the time so at the limit of frustration I remember what I was taught but golf is supposed to be hard so I always regress.
Lol! We do like to make it more challenging for some reason. If we all played basic and simple shots and swings out s ores would be a lot more consistent. But it’s fun to keep tweaking and trying extra finesse things too
thanks for a great vid!
More than welcome
what? I just stumbled onto this chan and these tips just took 4 strokes off my game!!! thank you!!! Nobody ever explained this to me.
I’m so happy to hear that we’ll done! Keep going and I’m sure 4 more will fall off soon! Then with the full swing we can help too I’m sure :) 🏌️♂️👍
great video - advice to really improve
Cheers 🏌️♂️👍
Great tips, thanks.
Thank you ⛳️
Very informative. Thank you
My pleasure
Nice, simple is best.
It sure is!
❤ I love it. Tqvm
Je ne parle toujours pas anglais, mais j'ai encore tout compris....Excellent ! Merci beaucoup 😊
De rien mon ami
Love that you didn't start with BS graphics and subscribe nonsense. Also GREAT NAME...Thanks you
Thanks!
This is a great pro!!
Why thank you 👍🏌️♂️⛳️
Yes I like using 9 or pitch ket it run-out.
