Swedish Foreign Minister: NATO must get ready for a Russian attack | DW News

2024 ж. 9 Мам.

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström has warned that Russia may attack NATO states if it wins the war in Ukraine. Sweden recently became NATO’s 32nd member state, prompted to join like its neighbour Finland in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sweden could play a crucial role in a possible conflict between Russia and NATO, given its strategic position on the Baltic Sea and its significant naval assets. And the Swedish island of Gotland, which lies between Sweden and the Baltic States, is seen as key to a defence of the Baltics if Vladimir Putin should mount an attack.
Billström spoke to DW’s Richard Walker in Berlin, discussing what NATO needs to do to get ready in the Baltic region, the importance of supporting Ukraine, whether Sweden is doing enough to support Kyiv, and whether he remains hopeful despite the current pessimism over the course of the war.

    • Germany ought to divest all its assets and enterprises to the United States and China in support of Ukraine. The European Union should similarly divest all assets to China for the benefit of Ukraine. It is imperative to compel the youth to actively participate in defending Ukraine, while relocating the operational center of leadership to the United States. The military should remain in the EU but solely for the purpose of deploying personnel to Ukraine. This strategic plan represents the sole viable solution for the next five years.

    • The key word is "slowly". I hate to project weakness in a time when we need to project strength, but as a Swede I am painfully aware just how inadequate our civil defence is. It's nice that Sweden is constantly now talked about as bringing a "strong defence" to the NATO table because that just isn't true, it's a desire for NATO to find something positive to latch onto. The strengths we bring, apart from our subs which are about the only real military asset truly worth as much as they say it is that we bring, are territorial. That's the biggest advantage to NATO of our membership. Civil defence in Sweden, despite all the fancy words, is still borderline nonexistent. Since they started sending out "Om krisen eller kriget kommer" more than entire WW2 has passed in time and very little if anything has actually expanded since then, and if it has it's from some of the infrastructure (like bomb shelters or the Muskö base) still being intact. Most people I know threw the pamphlet away when they got it, or at the very least have never read it. People are painfully unprepared, especially most Stockholmers and other "big city-folk". I really don't know where all this talk of our "strong military" came from. How weak must it be in many countries if our defence is considered strong?!

Sweden got the framework for total defence ready, and started to turn earlier than e.g. Germany (around 2017 vs Germany's 2022). Still, it will take 3-6 years until Sweden is back up on defensive posture. Germany will take until about 2035, but of course improving annually until then.
