He signed up for a cooking course first. I was a road traffic litigator of all things. I often think of him.

    • I kind of lost the story when Stanley said his real name is John, 16:50 and then only did Heather traced the call and called the ambulance. Why not before? If you could clarify a bit, it would be great. Huge thanks.

    • @@landang7906 Hi, Your questions are valid. I think at first he lied about his name until he felt a connection with her. Once he realizes that connection he felt comfortable revealing his real name. He might have eventually told her where he lived. Maybe the director didn't show that part to the audience. We might have to assume she did get his address and then called an ambulance. I think keeping him on the phone talking is a priority in her profession. I hope that answers your question. I just loved that the conversation she had with John might have had something to do with her being on a date with the guy in her office.

    • Suicide always is the cowardly approach. You think you're escaping your pain, but in reality you're just traumatizing the people you leave behind, leaving them to bear the pain for the rest of their lives. As someone with suicidal thoughts and impulses for 20 years, this awareness is what held me back. I knew I'd be punishing everyone else to escape my pain. We all have pain. Dumping mine on others while I exit would have been the ultimate selfishness.

I lost my brother 2 years ago he took his life after his wife died from covid, the deep sadness I feel for his loneliness and his desperation will be with me for a very long time. I will always feel guilty that my attention and love for him wasn't enough. All we can do is love them. 1/16/24 I’ve tried to reply to each of you, I guess I don’t know what I’m doing as I see that none of my replies ever posted. So I want to thank you to all of you who responded. Each comment has impacted me, we are all connected in love pain and tragedy. My loss is not unique, I see that now reading your comments I feel less alone . He took his life on Valentine’s Day and as the anniversary day approaches I’ve decided to do something positive and special to remember him, plant a tree or something? I believe GOOD & GOD are ONE, & although we all have good within us, some of us most defiantly have more, than others for sure. "Be Kind whenever possible, and it's always possible" - The Dalai Lama. • I do watch a lot of short films be that Dust, Omeleto or other independent films. I'm very familiar with the seasoned actors, but I've never had the privilege of watching Sally Hawkins until now. This was such an emotionally charged & powerful piece of work to see unfold, it certainly brought a lump to my throat, to see the crisis line volunteer frantically trying to work out through her files where Stanley/John lived before the pills really kicked in. This was an expertly crafted production to watch.

  • What a very extraordinary film!!!! Film makers have an obligation to contribute & take credit for what goes right within their society, country, & world; or pollute & take the blame for whatever goes wrong. That said, this team certainly contributed BIG time, with a Positive & deeply moving Social Message👍 Bravo!!!! A.C. Point✍of View.

  • This is what film is all about. Or should be. In 21 and a half minutes it quickens your heart and brings tears to your eyes. I thought I recognized Mr. Broadbent's voice. Wonderful character actor. Film evokes emotion and stops time for the viewer. I love short films. They are very often more powerful that two hours of a full length feature.

  • Beautiful story with some of the best acting I've ever seen or heard. As wonderful as Sally Hawkins is in this performance, I think the moments when she says nothing, especially when not being seen by her love interest, is astounding. Jim Broadbent is so believable, so captivating, so true as he goes from emotional to gentle surrender. Edward Hogg's nuanced playoff from Sally's presence is amazing. And when you see each actor at their best, that's called great directing. Thank you, for sharing this perfect film.

  • I thought this a beautiful story and true to life. Not everyone is saved and the ending is happy ever after. The young woman is shy, but feels the sorrow of the man calling. He dies, but his wife joins him and they are joyful together. The last scene shows Heather nervous, but breaking free of shyness and timidly kissing. Perhaps her time helping others is growing her emotions and diminishing her shyness?

  • As someone who's dying (probably in a few month, but who knows) the thing that's on my mind very often is making sure I give all that I have to those who appreciate it. I have both stories and objects to give to anyone and everyone, and occasionally specific someones (though I have no younger family, and only my dad left, and he's not going to be around much longer either as he's 80 with a very bad heart). So, yes, if you're around someone who's on their way out, even if it's artificially induced (if it's done with compassion and respect for themselves), you can help them immensely by finding value in whatever they have to share.
