Woman Says Store Accused Her of Stealing After Using Self-Checkout

The scanners at self-checkout lines are meant to make shopping a quick and easy experience. However, they are causing a major headache to some shoppers. After paying for her items at an Ohio Walmart, Marquona Tippens says a security guard accused her of stealing. He let her go but Tippens says she was so offended she returned everything. Two weeks later, she had a warrant out for her arrest and went to jail for six hours. All charges were dismissed once security footage proved her innocence. Now, she’s suing Walmart and the security guard for false imprisonment. They both deny any wrongdoing.

  • This happened to my daughter and I at our local Wal-Mart. It was evening time during the week. I had to get some groceries as I work days. There was no actual people to check us out so I had to use the self check out. The scanner was constantly beeping and alerting the staff. Every time the lady had to come over I apologized to her saying how sorry I was for having to bother her. She had a real attitude problem. Eventually we got checked out, $300 later. As we were walking through the 1st set of doors, a man grabbed my cart. I seriously thought I was getting robbed. No it was security. He starts screaming at me to come with him. I said I'm not going anywhere with you. Then appears the woman worker that was reluctantly helping me at the register. Turned out she was an assistant manager. The man accused me of skipping items. I looked at her and said you helped me several times. How could I have skipped anything? She just looked at me. No response. I said you know what, you can have all this back. I want a refund. Security then said I passed the point of sale so I couldn't return the stuff. I said I'm still in the store so I haven't left the buildings. The woman then said ok I could return the stuff and to follow her to customer service. We did. The security guy called the police while she was taking her time refunding me. All the sudden there was police around me like I was a threat. The whole time I told my daughter to stay cool so there would be no problems. After talking to the police they told me they get called there All the time and I apologized to them for wasting their time. The entire time I was talking to the police, the security guy was screaming that he wanted to press charges. The police eventually told him that won't be happening. After the assistant manager went through my entire cart she discovered I didn't miss anything. I looked at her and said, really? Wow. Wal-Mart invoked a no trespass on us. We can no longer go into that Wal-Mart. Their loss.

  • The exact same thing happened to my adult daughter at a Walmart in Alabama while we were buying groceries during a family holiday and they claimed she didn’t scan one of the two roasts. They arrested her, she spent around 18 hours in the county jail and ended up having to travel back to court in Alabama (from where we live in Florida) several months later. Fortunately the judge dropped all charges since she had no criminal history and we literally had waaaaay more money to pay for the roast and it was obvious that the scanner didn’t scan the second roast although my daughter heard the scanner make the sound it makes when it scans. Walmart banned her from that location for life. Luckily we don’t live in Alabama so it’s not a huge problem but she doesn’t even shop at Walmart anymore here in Florida because of this incident. 😿

In fact I do place some unscanned item in the basket once in a while, but it's never a problem with our system. The only problem with these is that some items of imprecise weight such as pre-packaged fruits and vegetables sometimes get rejected and you you need to wait a bit for assistant to manually override weight mismatch. We also have portable scanners in some places and phone apps appeared recently which allow scanning items and place in the bag right away, and then only pay at self checkout with no further scanning. • This happened to me twice! Once was a $5 box of popsicles. I had purchased three boxes and one box didn’t scan. They waited until I was loading my car before coming out and walking me back in. They called the police and trespassed me. The second time was a similar situation at another grocery store. I was purchasing candles on clearance and the bar code was covered with another bar code. One wasn’t working so I scanned another candle twice. Again, they waited until I was outside so they could embarrass me by walking me back through the store. Then she says that she was watching me to see if I scanned it. I said so let me get this right, you saw me having having issues so instead of offering assistance, you waited to see what I’d do?! To which she responded, yeah…my boss is gonna see my worth. After rescanning all my items, they reluctantly let me go.

  • I NEVER used the self service check out. first, it's not my job to check out stuff on my own if it's not my store. the store should have a clerk doing that. second, there will always be a lot of people accused for stealing if there's a missed scan. no matter what, they won't believe you or listen to you cuz they don't care. those self serve check outs should be removed and banned since it's a problem when the started it.

He said it is not legally considered shoplifting until you actually leave the store with the item. Most people do not realize that, they believe whatever the people at the store tells them.

If she paid, what looked like over $100 worth of groceries, I'm pretty sure she could pay for a $6 bag of candy 😒. That Walmart security was on a power trip and I 100% think she should sue.

  • This happened to my wife at a Target and she was told she could not use that location for a month. Two months later, she goes back in (after the temporary ban), and employees followed her like she was about to put the whole store into her purse. She goes to complain, and is then told she can't shop there for a year. Over 2 years later, we don't even bother with that location.
