This September, Oscar® winner Jordan Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend that your friend’s older sibling probably told you about at a sleepover: Candyman. Rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directs this contemporary incarnation of the cult classic.
For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.
With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo; HBO’s Euphoria, Assassination Nation) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.
Universal Pictures presents, from Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld’s Monkeypaw Productions, in association with BRON Creative, Candyman. Candyman is directed by DaCosta, and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us), Rosenfeld and Peele. The screenplay is by Peele & Rosenfeld and DaCosta. The film is based on the 1992 film Candyman, written by Bernard Rose, and the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. The film’s executive producers are David Kern, Aaron L. Gilbert and Jason Cloth.

  • *"Don't Read this unless you saw the first Candyman from 1992,"* (Or actually, any of the other movies) In case anyone is interested, the main character's name is Anthony. And he was the Baby that Candyman kidnapped in the first movie. He threatened a woman named Helen (the reincarnation of his lover) who was researching him as part of her thesis, with killing Baby Anthony if she didn't go to him. The Candyman intended for Helen and Anthony to die in a bonfire and join him as part of a weird ghost family. Helen died but not before she took Anthony out and saved him. In the end, Helen turns into a Vengeance Ghost that uses a hook similar to Candyman and will appear in a mirror if summoned. She ends up having her own mural painted within Candyman's Urban Temple and now she's part of the Candyman Folklore of Cabrini-Green. In the last Candyman movie we saw that the reincarnation of his granddaughter defeated him in the third movie. Her Mom (Candyman's Daughter reborn) who was in the second movie, told her that to defeat the Candyman, she needs to kill his legend. He seems to feed on raw belief. But whenever he doesn't have enough fear or belief to feed off of, he had to kill. So she blamed all the murders on a crooked Cop who tried to kill her in the end of the movie. Making people stop believing in the Candyman. It seems Anthony has rekindled the Candyman's soul by getting people hyped about him again. And stupidly getting people to do the ritual. Helen's Ghost is going to be in the movie as well I have heard. I thought it was awesome that they put Anthony as the main character. And the setting back in Cabrini-Green. Though wikipedia says it will be a heavily gentrified Cabrini-Green.

    • rikU everything is opinion based, but Candyman should be as internationally well known as the others and deserves to be a horror icon. Most true horror aficionados do hold the original movie and the actor Tony Todd in very high regard as he is one of the most iconic horror actors of our time. Dead meat did a great vid on the original films. Admittedly, the first is amazing, the second was okay and the third was a complete straight to video dumpster fire. But just focusing on the first one. It was based off a very interesting short story written by Clive Barker, The Forbidden. Tons of creative license was taken when comparing the story to the first film, but everyone overall agrees that both intellectual properties were stellar. So we are off to a good start. The Phillip Glass score that opens the movie was so simple yet haunting, the movie opens up with a bloody urban legend scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film. We know we are getting blood, but this was before the days of torture porn so it was bloody, scary yet still tasteful. And the director of evil dead, his brother was in that opening scene, so us horror heads got a fun Easter egg. Now onto what makes this iconic. Tony freaking Todd. Young, imposing, seductive, relentless and a character that you can almost sympathize with. And his true intended victim Helen was young, beautiful, enchanting and even as you watch her spiral into madness, you are rooting for her as well. The way they deliver their lines and almost seem to get lost in each other was painfully beautiful. Now this is one movie with social/racial subtext I can get behind and having this as a focal point in a movie where, race, class, mental illness, infidelity and history are all discussed is quite powerful, especially when you are not beat over the head with forcing white guilt on people and just telling a damn good story. Now that with a lead actor like Tony Todd and your have icon status. This isn’t a paint by numbers kinda horror flick where horny teens get knifed. This is a thought provoking piece that exposes multiple horrors in our day to day existence or within America’s tumultuous past. This is why some horror icons are more meaningful to me than others. Chucky was an asshole, Mike Myers was just a bad seed for no clear reason, Freddy was a pedo that got what he deserved. Jason followed a more formulaic path, but you can at least relate and sympathize with him more because he started the franchise as an innocent victim, so did Candyman. And while the others receive more international acclaim than Candyman, all of their franchises are older and have far more films. Especially considering that after the first, no one really takes the other two into consideration. Yeah they exist but they aren’t really real to the Candyman lore. This new film actually picks up where the first one left off. It’s the true sequel. Yes the racial dynamic is integral to the plot, but the story is about a lot more than that. At the end of the day, the heart of the original Candyman truly lies in how good people can become the boogeymen or women. Most other horror films don’t hit the same way imo.

  • Candy man is a every underrated slasher killer, more scary then most movie slashers but I think that’s because he’s not overly commercialized and in badly written movies like Freddy Kruger or Jason voorhees.
